Climate change mitigation action planning and implementation cannot be carried on by local government only. Involvement of local stakeholders, most importantly local community is necessary to ensure the action can be embraced and implemented by all stakeholders; Climate change issue cannot be addresses in isolation and without integration to development, local livelihoods and other environment issues such as water and biodiversity;

Alternatives to Slash and Burn Programme: what have we learned, where to next?

1. The first theory of change that providing new scientific evidence and improved practices would trigger decrease in deforestation was far too simplistic/naive about how science can influence the rest of the world 2. Interdisciplinary and multi-institutional approaches developed (e.g., ASB matrix) produced relevant and useful results that uni-disciplinary and uni-institutional approaches could not have produced 3. Governance and management structure need to be aligned with science implemented (inclusive, transparent, accountable) 4. To generate new knowledge, IPGs, it is essential to have baseline/benchmark in multiple sites, understanding of processes at play in environment and at spatial-temporal scales before scaling up 5. Flexibility, willingness to learn from mistakes, asking existential questions, re-inventing program are essential to evolve realistic Theories of Change overtime

This document summarizes a presentation given by Egerton University about their Building Adaptation Capacities for Climate Change in Kenya (CAPro) grant project. Egerton University has over 500 academic staff and 16,000 students across multiple campuses and faculties focused on agriculture, commerce, and environmental studies. The CAPro project objectives are to evaluate traditional and emerging climate change adaptation strategies and build capacity on adaptation among communities. Key activities to date include site visits, stakeholder meetings, collecting climate data, and selecting MSc students to participate. Challenges include scattered sites, integrating timelines, and procurement delays.

Overview of the Collective Engagement and Communication Plan for CCAFS-SEA

CCAFS | CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security

The Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Regional Program for Southeast Asia (CCAFS-SEA) recently concluded a collective engagement and communication program workshop at the Agricultural Genetics Institute in Hanoi, Vietnam on 29-30 May. The workshop participants drew insights from best practices of CGIAR member-centers, developed a roadmap to actively engage partners, and draw an overall communication plan to support the implementation of CCAFS research agenda and priorities. Sharing open data and capacity development experiences from RCMRD

Earth observation data plays a critical role in building resilience to climate change as well as reporting on sustainable development goals (SDG’s). There are new opportunities to use open data in earth observation such as Landsat and the Sentinel data. Modern day farming relies on weather information in order to plan ahead of extreme weather conditions such as drought and floods. In addition, there is need to invest in hydromet services to build resilience to climate change and help citizens with accurate weather forecasts. In this webinar, Dr Kenneth Mubea (the Capacity Development Lead) at the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) shares some of the experiences and projects that RCMRD are involved in various open data initiatives in Agriculture. RCMRD’s mission is to promote sustainable development using earth observation and thus SDG’s. RCMRD is an inter-governmental organization established in 1975 (Nairobi, Kenya) and currently has 20 Contracting Member States in the Eastern and Southern Africa Regions.

- Indonesia's INDC focuses on reducing emissions from the land-based sector, which currently accounts for the largest share of emissions. Drivers, forest transitions and setting baselines at sub-national level

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system. Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs. In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier. The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.
