The digestive process begins in the mouth where food is broken down by chewing and saliva containing enzymes. Food then enters the stomach where it is further broken down by stomach acids into chyme. Chyme passes into the small intestine where the majority of digestion occurs with enzymes from the pancreas, liver and intestinal wall breaking down nutrients which are then absorbed. Undigested material then moves to the large intestine where water is absorbed before waste is stored in the rectum and excreted.
