This document proposes a modification of the widely used Kuppuswamy scale for assessing socioeconomic status in India to make it applicable to Nepal. The educational and occupational criteria of the original Kuppuswamy scale are retained, but the economic criteria are modified. Family income groups stated in Indian rupees in the original scale are first converted to Nepalese rupees, then adjusted based on inflation rates in Nepal from 1976 to 2009 using consumer price index data. The resulting modified scale provides income cut-offs updated for the Nepalese context that can be used to quickly assess socioeconomic status in community surveys and studies in Nepal.
