The Significance of Xenia in Homer’s The Odyssey

Honors English 9
23 May 2010
The Significance of Xenia in Homer s Odyssey The society of Ancient Greece was very much
centered around the gods, and a healthy fear of the consequences of not obeying their laws. The
next most important staples of the society were the concepts of braver, pride, and hospitality, or
Xenia. The significance of these values is shown quite clearly in The Odyssey of Homer.
In the first five books of the epic, Telemachos is shown great hospitality by the kings, Nestor, and
Menelaos. As Homer writes in description of Nestor s reception of Telemachos and Athena, These
men, when they sighted the strangers, all came down together and gave them greeting with their
hands and offered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Homer.9.289 2910 This is one example of the brutality that Odysseus and his crew were also
shown, rather than hospitality. The range of degrees of hospitality shown to the travelers is a
testament to the number of people who ignored the law of Xenia.
The hospitality that Telemachos and Penelope show Odysseus when he returns home, even
though they do not know who he really is yet another example of xenia. This hospitality helps in
his winning his home back from the suitors. Telemachos welcomes Odysseus into the house, and
gives him permission to beg the suitors of money. Despite knowing this, said suitors harass him
when he asks for coins. In response to this, Telemachos says , There will be no pleasure in this
feast, at all since vile things will be uppermost. Now the hallowed prince Telemachos spoken [...]
I drive away no man. Telemachos s defense of Odysseus, even in guise of a vagabond, shows
great grace on his part, and show great hospitality, on top of undermining the suitors, thus giving
them less power. After the suitors have gone home, Penelope summons her maidservant, saying ,
Eurynome, bring up a chair, and put a fleece on it, so that the stranger can be seated, and tell me
his story, and listen to what I have to say. (Homer.18.97 99) This statement shows that Penelope is
intending t make a beggar as comfortable as she, and set aside time specifically to

A Reflection On Public Service
As students of Masters of Public Service degrees, it is imperative to develop a holistic and deep
understanding of what public service means. Our class discussions have shown us the ambiguity of
striking a balance between opposing forces: between intention and outcome, aid and empowerment,
intrinsic and extrinsic affirmation, and self interest and altruism. How do we balance these
perspectives, when each has its benefits and pitfalls to the success of any project? In determining
my own definitionof public service, my hope is to elucidate factors that optimize each of these
perspectives. In doing so, we can come closer to defining public service in a way that is both
operationally useful and ethically guiding. Considering course documents and class discussions, I
have defined the phrase as follows:
The public is a marginalized body unable or unexpected to monetarily repay servants for
provided goods. Service is an act that results in improved quality of life as reported by receiving
individuals. Therefore public service is defined by (1) actions resulting (2) in goods that improve
quality of life (3) as reported by marginalized recipients (4) who are unable or unexpected to
monetarily repay the servant.
By fragmenting the definition into four parts, I can address the issues of intention versus outcome,
aid versus empowerment, intrinsic versus extrinsic affirmation, and self interest versus altruism in
public service. Applying the Formula of Universal Law

Marigolds Short Story
At a young age, children do not understand the importance of having compassion as for they hold
innocence within themselves. Growing up and maturing into an adult, children begin to
progressively lose their innocence as they become more of a compassionate person because one
can not have both innocence and compassion simultaneously. In fact, a coming of age short story
called Marigolds written by Eugenia Collier, tells about a young girl named Lizabeth who grows
up to become a compassionate person. For the most part, Lizabeth tells her childhood experience
in a flashback on how she mostly remembers Miss Lottie s marigolds. Ultimately, Lizabeth decides
to destroy Miss Lottie s marigolds out of anger because she hears about her parents economic
struggles. Shortly after Lizabeth realizes what she had done, she realizes the meaning of why Miss
Lottie plants the marigolds. Throughout the short story, Marigolds, the characterization of Lizabeth
helps develop the author s argument that one can not have both compassion and innocence. The
three events that show this is, when Lizabeth hesitates before throwing the rocks at the marigolds,
hearing the sounds of her father s sorrowful cries, and eliminating Miss Lottie s marigolds. Collier
s argument in Marigolds was that one cannot have both compassion and innocence and this is
revealed through the event where Lizabeth decides to throw rocks at the marigolds. Her character
develops to becoming a compassionate person

Examples Of Loyalty In Romeo And Juliet

Capulets, show loyalty to them by defending their honor. Tybalt publicly

Analysis of Elizabeth Bishops the Moose
Elizabeth Bishop s The Moose is a narrative poem of 168 lines. Its twenty eight six line stanzas
are not rigidly structured. Lines vary in length from four to eight syllables, but those of five or six
syllables predominate. The pattern of stresses is lax enough almost to blur the distinction between
verse and prose; the rhythm is that of a low keyed speaking voice hovering over the descriptive
details. The eyewitness account is meticulous and restrained.
The poem concerns a bus traveling to Boston through the landscape and towns of New Brunswick.
While driving through the woods, the bus stops because a moose has wandered onto the road. The
appearance of the animal interrupts the peaceful hum of elderly passengers voices. ... Show more

Thus the first part, devoted to the landscape, is richly descriptive, replete with qualifying epithets
that, toward the end (in line 75 and in line 81), come in by threes, like beads on a string. In the
second part, dealing with the passengers plight, learned, latinate words such as divagation, auditory,
hallucination, eternity, and acceptance signal the presence of the narrator commentator. In the third
partВ—the one reserved for the mooseВ—epithets return. In the climactic twenty fourth stanza, the
most distinctly poetic devicesВ—explicit comparisonsВ—are bestowed on the protagonist: high as
a church,/ homely as a house. Moreover, the four additional epithets lavished on the moose
contribute to the grandeur of its appearance: towering, antlerless, and grand, otherworldly.
By careful calibration and timing of her tropes, Bishop succeeds superbly in achieving her ends.
Contrast is attained by her control over all compartments of language, and her austere, restrained
tone and strategy of deferral and understatement are dramatically effective.
Themes and Meanings The Moose is ultimately about the human need to be purged and, if
possible, cured of selfhood. Self absorption or narcissism is not only a passing malaise afflicting
teenagers. Older people regard themselves in the mirror of their

Should Student Athletes Get Paid Essay
The crackle of pads and the sounds of whistles. Flags flying everywhere and bodies crashing each
other. Football players these days put their bodies and their lives on the line when they go out on
the field everyday. This being said, is it time for college athletes to get paid to play. As a result of
sports, universities are receiving hundreds of millions of dollars of profit and coaches and staff are
getting paid millions, yet the athletes that bring the university and coaches the wins and the success
are getting no additional funds. I believe that it is time that student athletes get paid for their
contributions to the success that they bring to their universities. One reason why student athletes
should get paid is because of the unfair financial gains that universities are making at the expense
of the athletes. College sports now is a billion dollar industry, with universities making hundreds of

The Aerial Migration Of The Bar Headed Goose
The Aerial Migration of the Bar headed Goose:
As a biological adaptation in response to a mountain barrier
Introduction
Every year, birds of all types around the world are forced to migrate between breeding and
wintering grounds as a survival mechanism. Seasonal variations in climate greatly impact
conditions of life for birds, forcing them to brave these journeys despite the threat of predators and
harsh conditions along the way (Alerstam Christie, 1993). To make their journeys even more
difficult, birds often encounter large mountain barriers on their routes, forcing them to rise in
elevation several kilometers in some cases to pass these great barriers, where the thinner air can
increase the energy costs of flying by up to 30% (Hawkes et al., 2011).
The goal of this paper is to discover how birds use air circulation patterns to aid in their migration,
then to demonstrate the effects of mountain meteorology on overpassing birds by presenting a case
where a mountain barrier has altered normal migration behaviour. First the paper will discuss
normal wind selectivity of migratory flight in birds as described by Akesson and Hedenstrom
(2000), then will go on to discuss basic air circulation characteristics in mountain environments and
how the Bar headed Goose has adapted to its iconic migration over the tallest mountain range on
Earth: the Himalayas. The research draws from a satellite tracking experiment conducted in Sweden
that explains normal wind selectivity in

Amway in China
Amway in China (A): A New Business ModelAssignment Questions1.What are Amway s core

adaptation of direct marketing. The company has now expanded into over 80 countries and has

Independent Business Owners (IBOs) because they have no legal ties to Amway other than they

Amway is similar to other direct marketing companies such as Dell Computers in that it reduces
product costs to consumers by bypassing retailers. Dell is also similar to Amway because by
dealing directly with consumers it can find out exactly what the consumer needs without incurring
consumer research costs that will be passed onto the consumer. Although Amway did not invent
direct marketing it has been said that it reinvented it. Therefore Amway is unlike most companies
that use direct marketing. Amway s direct marketing design resembles a pyramid but it not
however a pyramid scheme or a ponzi scheme. A ponzi scheme is a illegal operation that promises
high returns on short term investments. It continues with investors keeping their money in the
investments thinking they are making large sums of money. News spreads to others who also
invest and the amount collected continues to grow. If a few people decide to get out they are paid
in order to disguise the scheme. Unfortunately for those who keep their money invested, they will
never see any profits or perhaps their initial investment again. This is unlike a pyramid scheme
because there are no levels of entry. A person who gets involved first does not collect more money
than someone who gets in last. Pyramid schemes are characterized by costly start up costs,
requirements to purchase products with virtually no value, promises of exponential

Analysis Of The Movie Fight Club
In the movie Fight Club we are introduced to an average, white collared, middle aged man who is
seemingly normal at first glance. However, it is clear that the narrator suffers from insomnia,
anxiety, and depression very early in the film. The narrator attempts to combat these symptoms in a
number of ways, however, the only way that he has found to be effective is by attending support
groups on a nightly basis.
The narrator soon creates an alter ego (though we do not know he is his alter ego until the end of
the film) named Tyler Durden. Durden is more attractive, has a better physique, and is overall more
confident than the narrator and Durden regularly takes control of the narrator without the narrator s
knowledge to carry out tasks that the narrator does not believe he has the power to accomplish.
This use of dissociation is a defense mechanism used by the narrator to remove himself from
situations that may produce anxiety. The narrator has many instances in which he is not able to
recollect things that happened that day or in previous days, such as having sexual relations with
Marla (the narrator envisions Tyler having sexual relations with Marla, while it is him having
sexual relations with Marla). However, it is difficult to reason through whether or not he is having
these memory lapses due to a true dissociative identity disorder (DID) or perhaps due to physical
trauma that was sustained through his fighting. Although the narrator is seen consuming an alcoholic

queer stories are still hijacked in subtler ways. Notably, queer characters are still regularly played by

This is because the possibility of younger drivers having accidents is much greater than a more
experienced driver. Also the more power a car has is greater the chances of an accident so the
cost of the premium will be higher. The price of the premium also depends on the business sector
that the insurer is concentrated on as some firms specialize in particular sectors and can evaluate
the risks more accurately. This way they will give better offers, (usually a smaller premium), than
to the more mainstream insurers. If the business has small or medium risk involved, the insurers
will usually have the standard rate applied to determine the cost of the premium. The insurer will
use this rate to apply a factor that is determined by level of activity taking place in that business.
This involves looking at the turnover in public and product liability insurance or the company s
employees liability insurance. However, there may be some other factors in the process of the
determination of the premium such as historical claims records and experience and risk management
procedures. If the business involves high risk, the price of the premium will probably be discussed
in a very scrupulous way putting every detail into

Robert Louis Stevenson Today Is Best Remembered As A Writer
Robert Louis Stevenson today is best remembered as a writer of the Victorian Gothic and in
particular for his novella, Jekyll and Hyde (1893). In this work, Utterson, a lawyer, discovers the
horrible secrets his friend, Dr. Jekyll, has been hiding from him and the consequences that result.
Straying away from mainstream science, Jekyll pursues his own catastrophic interests in order to
separate the two sides of his morality and thusly creates his brutish double, Hyde. This text
introduces the idea of human duality and brings forth the question of morality. However, duality,
although important, is only one aspect of this novella, and there are other points of intrigue. An
example of this intrigue is the role of women or rather the lack of... Show more content on

As a result, Jekyll has no understandable justification to explain his experimentation, and his
character can come across as irrational. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the
patriarchy operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As
previously stated, this text revolves around a male centric plot in which women do not play a role.
Essentially, this story is about communities of men , focusing on their interactions and experiences
in the London city as they attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women
could potentially distract from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently
removed women from any important role (Eberle Sinatra and Beauvais 151). Moving on,
Stevenson himself even claimed to have difficulties bringing characters to life, in particular women,
and this problem extends to some of his other works where women, and love as well, play a small
role in comparison to the importance of the male characters (Linehan 34). While expressing disdain
with male vanity and also with men s typical perceptions of women, Stevenson also conveyed
fascination with the idea of how men underestimate women. By excluding women from his story,
Stevenson may have cleverly demonstrated this underestimation, using both himself, as the writer,
and the male characters in Jekyll and Hyde to explain this phenomenon. Nonetheless, some

Ancient Indian Civilization
ANCIENT INDIAN CIVILIZATION
INTRODUCTION
In the 1920s, a huge discovery in South Asia proved that Egypt and Mesopotamia were not the
only early civilizations. In the vast Indus River plains (located in what is today Pakistan and
western India), under layers of land and mounds of dirt, archaeologists discovered the remains of
a 4,600 year old city. A thriving, urban civilization had existed at the same time as Egyptian and
Mesopotamian states in an area twice each of their sizes. The Indian civilization is one of the most
ancient civilizations of the world. It is known as the Sindhu civilization or the Indus Valley
civilization or the Aryan civilization. Sometimes it is also referred to as the Vedic civilization.

monsoon, however what precipitation does fall, it falls on the Northern slope of the Himilayas.
During mid June through October a second monsoon indicates the Wet Season a.k.a. the southwest
monsoon. Following the southwest monsoon, heavy rains fall in its wake (however sparse rainfall
falls on the Western Ghats, the heaviest rainfull occours over the Ganges Valley and the Eastern
Himilayan Mountains). The timing of these winds is critical; too little or too late rainfall results in
an unsuccessful harvest, yet too much or an extended period of rainfall causes flooding along the
country side. Temperatures also play a significant role in how Indian s settled the land in anchient

Angela s Ashes Modernism Essay
Modernism took place in the late 19th century and early 20th century, more specifically the years
following World War I ( Modernism in literature 1). The novel Angela s Ashes, written in 1996, is
considered a work of modernism. Writers often talked about historical events, due (feeling) that they
were at the end of history. ( Modernism504).
Writers of this time period were heavily influenced by the war, and the political events going on.
Major writers were; T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and others. All of their
writings incorporated accurate portrayals of the world through experience and interior monologue (
Modernism 504) and did not write about the new technology developing around them ( Modernism

Hybrid Vehicles Are Environmentally Friendly Vehicles
Hybrid vehicles, which are environmentally friendly vehicles, which will replace fossil fueled car
in the future but they have a limited range and long fueling time. As fossil fuel resources start to
become limited and non environmentally friendly, car manufacturers are looking to find ways
to make hybrid vehicles the future of transportation. Hybrid vehicles are beneficial since they
are efficient, reduce pollution, and cut global emission than the current hybrids models. As
such, hybrid electric vehicles can have real public benefits for both the environment and for
energy security. Hybrid vehicles can help reduce smog pollution by ninety percent or more in
comparison to the cleanest conventional vehicles today. Hybrids also give a rewarding tax

environment clean. As for now, hybrids have their strengths and weaknesses that haven t been
perfected yet, but they keep on getting better each year. The reason hybrid vehicles get better
gas mileage is because of the small electric motor that provides a little extra power to the small
engine compared to the big gasoline powered engines. Even though hybrid vehicles have a short
mile range with a small electric engine you can drive an extra mile to the gas station in case of an
emergency when you accidentally run out fuel. Hybrid cars are known to get five miles per gallon

History Of The American Space Program
Wallop s Island, Cape Canaveral, and the History of the American Space Program America s space
program is undoubtedly one of its greatest modern achievements. Few people cannot recall the
famous quote That s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind, or do not know where it
came from. The story leading up to the moment a man walked on the moon, as well as everything
that came after, is just as interesting and important as the moment itself. The significance of the
history of America s aeronautics programs cannot possibly be overestimated, and their story is one
that is incredibly important to the modern world of today. It would not be the nation that it is, with
the technology it possesses, without its crucial involvement in the space race . If the technology
that sent a man to the moon did not exist, our daily lives would be impacted and basic tools would
be missing. Beginning with America s first official aeronautics organization, the National Advisory
Committee for Aeronautics (or NACA) and continuing through to the present day and the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (or NASA), the story of America s aerospace programs is
interesting and extremely important. It is a story that spans many years and giant leaps in
technology, and involves important locations like Wallops Flight Facility and Kennedy Space Center

Security Orchestration Research Paper
Alternate Title: Is Security Orchestration Merely Another Term for Automation?
It is always interesting to attend a CISO roundtable. Cybersecurity discussions provide the
opportunity to learn, experience thought provoking scenarios and share our problems and triumphs.
I recently attended a roundtable that focuses on security automation and orchestration. When the
question of the difference between the two was posed, no one could provide a concrete answer. The
best answer that anyone could offer was that orchestration is just a fancier synonym for automation.
Both terms are currently being used quite a bit and almost interchangeably, but they are not
synonyms.
To learn more about how most people are defining the terms security orchestration, security
workflow and security automation in the real world, I decided to ... Show more content on

By order, they meant predictable, repeatable and consistent results. They want a system that allows
them to see their processes documented as well as tracked, but this is more about playbooks than
integration with security tools.
Requirement: Automation
Automation includes both task automation and playbook automation. Task automation is primarily
about managing alerts, especially responding to false alarms and routine responses. Playbook
automation concerns dealing with alerts in a logical sequence through task automation. For
example, in a phishing attack, triage might include performing a reputation check on the IP across
the different feeds or hunting for malicious IPs throughout the environment.
Orchestrating Security
Thus far in this post, the discussion has been focused on workflow and automation. When these
steps are woven into a solution that includes human analysts, you have security orchestration.

Procrastination Essay
Curing ProcrastinationFive
While it is not a life changing syndrome; that is, a diagnosis found in , procrastination is still
pernicious, psychologically. It can create mild symptoms or some that are chronic, even
debilitating. Regardless, procrastination is something that can be played with.
Procrastination is really a form of ambivalence. This is not widely accepted. Ambivalence is when
part of you wants something and part of your doesn t want that something. It doesn t have to be two
things that directly collide. One of the somethings can be related to the other, just not the same,
requiring a choice that is, at least partially, mutually exclusive. Ambivalence can be in our
awareness, partially in awareness or totally out of awareness. This doesn t matter, because the
subjective experience of it is anxiety. This ambivalence aspect actually creates anxiety, but it is of
the kind that is not usually related with other clinical syndromes, proper.
Procrastination happens when these conflicts occur in our lives and we don t want to negotiate

Kurt Lewin s Influence On Social Psychology Essay
There have been many famous psychologists throughout history, including Sigmund Freud, B. F.
Skinner, and countless others. Though the psychologist who had the biggest impact on social
psychology would be Kurt Lewin. Commonly known as the father of social psychology, Lewin put
in countless hours of hard work and research in the study of the individual behavior among social
situations. By working with other renowned psychologists, creating theories of his own, and
leaving a mark on the world that still thrives today, Kurt Lewin is greatly responsible for the many
of the advancements of psychologythroughout history. Born in a small town of Mogilno, now a
part of Poland, on September 9, 1890, Kurt Lewin began his mark on history. Lewin was one of
four children, who all worked within their family s general store and farm. Lewin s family lived
above the general store until they moved to Berlin, when Lewin was fifteen years old. After
going to different schools and studying Greek philosophy, medicine, and biology, Lewin found
himself attending the University of Berlin in 1910 (Bradley). He attended the university to
acquire a doctorate degree in philosophy and psychology. Though not long after, Lewin had to
take a break from his studies to join Kaiser s army. Lewin fought in World War I for four years
until he was wounded in combat. Once returned he met his first wife Maria Landsberg, whom he
had his first two children with. Being able to return to his studies, Lewin used his

Social Media is used to provide information about a particular disaster and in turn receive
feedback, messages, comments and posts from users. The use of social media as an emergency
weapon for communication is increasing and readily available to post emergency information in

damage caused and how to come to aid with these conditions.
But is social media actually capable of helping those affected in disasters through the Internet
forum?
The use of social media during natural calamities at all levels local or international has
successfully widened and expressed interest concerning how social media very soon will be used to
come in terms with recovery of affected regions and cultural monuments because of disaster.
Taking the recent natural disaster, an earthquake with massive magnitude that affected Nepal as an
example we examine the benefits of using social media as a platform with its implication in context
to natural disasters.
Introduction:
The use of social media is not restricted by geographical boundaries; it is used to interact with

starting something or maybe struggled to finish something that you have started? You re not
alone. All of us at one time or another experienced this. Not being able to concentrate on a
specific goal or task at hand or even figuring out the correct course of action to take. So, how do
you know if you have a problem focusing? If you have tasks or projects that you have not
finished or lost interest in or simply did not follow through on, you have a lack of focus. A
repetition of these experiences can often make you feel like a failure because you just don t

to focus properly, you have the ability to become successful at anything you do. It is a skill you can

The Current State Of Water Supply
Introduction
Water, although considered a renewable resource is not available for infinite use as only six
percent of the world s total supply is fresh water. Only this fresh water can be directly used for daily
human needs and thus the amount of water actually available for use is much lower than the total
amount of water present on the earth. The limited amount of water then poses the issue of water
scarcity in some areas and makes the wise use and sustainable management of water extremely
important. To ensure this sustainable management of water and prevent any misuse, it is important
to have an appropriate institutional framework that looks after the water supply. The lack of a
proper framework in the past has lead to the shifting of water management from the hands of the
government to the private sector (Prasad, 2007).
The purpose of writing this essay is to look into the current state of water supply, the issues
surrounding the water supply and the correct method to overcome the prevailing issues. This essay
will answer the question is privatization of water the solution to solving the current water crisis in
different parts of the world? I will argue for the need of a public private partnership to ensure a
balance between the private sector and the government. In Section (1) of the essay I will talk about
the failings in the current water system and the reasons leading to a shift towards privatization.

30% larger than each of its three competitors. This plant is the most efficient in the central region.
In 1994, Beaver built a new plant with capacity of 1,000,000 units per year outside Vancouver,

The Divine Comedy By Virgil And Dante
Relationships come in many forms with varying troubles and blessings. In the book, The Divine
Comedy, two of the main characters, Virgil and Dante, can have a seemingly simple relationship,
but when closely examined and reflected on, it is actually quite complex. They venture through the
depths of hell, the complications of a long journey, and the perplexing reality of purgatory.
Throughout their relationship they are faced with different gains and trials that they react to in
various ways. Their circumstances are always changing and the course is rough, but throughout the
entirety of their venture together, there remains one constant element, and that is the love they
share in their relationship. It is outwardly expressed through their actions and words throughout the
entirety of the book.
The question I came across in reading The Divine Comedy is:
Why does Dante use different terms to address Virgil? What do they mean or what is their
significance? How does the development of their relationship affect the story as a whole?
The most common name used by Dante is My guide , which is the most logical name he would
use to call Virgil. This is because Virgil is leading Dante through all these different journeys,
taking every step right by his side. Virgil has an understanding of Dante s uncertainty, and takes
him under his wing. He was chosen for Dante to guide him and that is why Dante uses the
possessive my to refer to him because Virgil was specifically provided

  • 2. The Significance of Xenia in Homer’s The Odyssey Kaitlyn Lambert MR. Bovaird Honors English 9 23 May 2010 The Significance of Xenia in Homer s Odyssey The society of Ancient Greece was very much centered around the gods, and a healthy fear of the consequences of not obeying their laws. The next most important staples of the society were the concepts of braver, pride, and hospitality, or Xenia. The significance of these values is shown quite clearly in The Odyssey of Homer. In the first five books of the epic, Telemachos is shown great hospitality by the kings, Nestor, and Menelaos. As Homer writes in description of Nestor s reception of Telemachos and Athena, These men, when they sighted the strangers, all came down together and gave them greeting with their hands and offered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Homer.9.289 2910 This is one example of the brutality that Odysseus and his crew were also shown, rather than hospitality. The range of degrees of hospitality shown to the travelers is a testament to the number of people who ignored the law of Xenia. The hospitality that Telemachos and Penelope show Odysseus when he returns home, even though they do not know who he really is yet another example of xenia. This hospitality helps in his winning his home back from the suitors. Telemachos welcomes Odysseus into the house, and gives him permission to beg the suitors of money. Despite knowing this, said suitors harass him when he asks for coins. In response to this, Telemachos says , There will be no pleasure in this feast, at all since vile things will be uppermost. Now the hallowed prince Telemachos spoken [...] I drive away no man. Telemachos s defense of Odysseus, even in guise of a vagabond, shows great grace on his part, and show great hospitality, on top of undermining the suitors, thus giving them less power. After the suitors have gone home, Penelope summons her maidservant, saying , Eurynome, bring up a chair, and put a fleece on it, so that the stranger can be seated, and tell me his story, and listen to what I have to say. (Homer.18.97 99) This statement shows that Penelope is intending t make a beggar as comfortable as she, and set aside time specifically to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Reflection On Public Service As students of Masters of Public Service degrees, it is imperative to develop a holistic and deep understanding of what public service means. Our class discussions have shown us the ambiguity of striking a balance between opposing forces: between intention and outcome, aid and empowerment, intrinsic and extrinsic affirmation, and self interest and altruism. How do we balance these perspectives, when each has its benefits and pitfalls to the success of any project? In determining my own definitionof public service, my hope is to elucidate factors that optimize each of these perspectives. In doing so, we can come closer to defining public service in a way that is both operationally useful and ethically guiding. Considering course documents and class discussions, I have defined the phrase as follows: The public is a marginalized body unable or unexpected to monetarily repay servants for provided goods. Service is an act that results in improved quality of life as reported by receiving individuals. Therefore public service is defined by (1) actions resulting (2) in goods that improve quality of life (3) as reported by marginalized recipients (4) who are unable or unexpected to monetarily repay the servant. By fragmenting the definition into four parts, I can address the issues of intention versus outcome, aid versus empowerment, intrinsic versus extrinsic affirmation, and self interest versus altruism in public service. Applying the Formula of Universal Law ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Marigolds Short Story At a young age, children do not understand the importance of having compassion as for they hold innocence within themselves. Growing up and maturing into an adult, children begin to progressively lose their innocence as they become more of a compassionate person because one can not have both innocence and compassion simultaneously. In fact, a coming of age short story called Marigolds written by Eugenia Collier, tells about a young girl named Lizabeth who grows up to become a compassionate person. For the most part, Lizabeth tells her childhood experience in a flashback on how she mostly remembers Miss Lottie s marigolds. Ultimately, Lizabeth decides to destroy Miss Lottie s marigolds out of anger because she hears about her parents economic struggles. Shortly after Lizabeth realizes what she had done, she realizes the meaning of why Miss Lottie plants the marigolds. Throughout the short story, Marigolds, the characterization of Lizabeth helps develop the author s argument that one can not have both compassion and innocence. The three events that show this is, when Lizabeth hesitates before throwing the rocks at the marigolds, hearing the sounds of her father s sorrowful cries, and eliminating Miss Lottie s marigolds. Collier s argument in Marigolds was that one cannot have both compassion and innocence and this is revealed through the event where Lizabeth decides to throw rocks at the marigolds. Her character develops to becoming a compassionate person ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Analysis of Elizabeth Bishops the Moose Elizabeth Bishop s The Moose is a narrative poem of 168 lines. Its twenty eight six line stanzas are not rigidly structured. Lines vary in length from four to eight syllables, but those of five or six syllables predominate. The pattern of stresses is lax enough almost to blur the distinction between verse and prose; the rhythm is that of a low keyed speaking voice hovering over the descriptive details. The eyewitness account is meticulous and restrained. The poem concerns a bus traveling to Boston through the landscape and towns of New Brunswick. While driving through the woods, the bus stops because a moose has wandered onto the road. The appearance of the animal interrupts the peaceful hum of elderly passengers voices. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus the first part, devoted to the landscape, is richly descriptive, replete with qualifying epithets that, toward the end (in line 75 and in line 81), come in by threes, like beads on a string. In the second part, dealing with the passengers plight, learned, latinate words such as divagation, auditory, hallucination, eternity, and acceptance signal the presence of the narrator commentator. In the third partВ—the one reserved for the mooseВ—epithets return. In the climactic twenty fourth stanza, the most distinctly poetic devicesВ—explicit comparisonsВ—are bestowed on the protagonist: high as a church,/ homely as a house. Moreover, the four additional epithets lavished on the moose contribute to the grandeur of its appearance: towering, antlerless, and grand, otherworldly. By careful calibration and timing of her tropes, Bishop succeeds superbly in achieving her ends. Contrast is attained by her control over all compartments of language, and her austere, restrained tone and strategy of deferral and understatement are dramatically effective. Themes and Meanings The Moose is ultimately about the human need to be purged and, if possible, cured of selfhood. Self absorption or narcissism is not only a passing malaise afflicting teenagers. Older people regard themselves in the mirror of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Should Student Athletes Get Paid Essay The crackle of pads and the sounds of whistles. Flags flying everywhere and bodies crashing each other. Football players these days put their bodies and their lives on the line when they go out on the field everyday. This being said, is it time for college athletes to get paid to play. As a result of sports, universities are receiving hundreds of millions of dollars of profit and coaches and staff are getting paid millions, yet the athletes that bring the university and coaches the wins and the success are getting no additional funds. I believe that it is time that student athletes get paid for their contributions to the success that they bring to their universities. One reason why student athletes should get paid is because of the unfair financial gains that universities are making at the expense of the athletes. College sports now is a billion dollar industry, with universities making hundreds of millions of dollars every year from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Is it right for universities to keep the NCAA and amateur enterprise in order to exploit athletes and the economic system to avoid taxes and maximize profits? The answer to these questions is a precarious no. Some may say, Why mess with a system that has been working for ages and give money to athletes that already are receiving a free education? • 10. The Aerial Migration Of The Bar Headed Goose The Aerial Migration of the Bar headed Goose: As a biological adaptation in response to a mountain barrier Introduction Every year, birds of all types around the world are forced to migrate between breeding and wintering grounds as a survival mechanism. Seasonal variations in climate greatly impact conditions of life for birds, forcing them to brave these journeys despite the threat of predators and harsh conditions along the way (Alerstam Christie, 1993). To make their journeys even more difficult, birds often encounter large mountain barriers on their routes, forcing them to rise in elevation several kilometers in some cases to pass these great barriers, where the thinner air can increase the energy costs of flying by up to 30% (Hawkes et al., 2011). The goal of this paper is to discover how birds use air circulation patterns to aid in their migration, then to demonstrate the effects of mountain meteorology on overpassing birds by presenting a case where a mountain barrier has altered normal migration behaviour. First the paper will discuss normal wind selectivity of migratory flight in birds as described by Akesson and Hedenstrom (2000), then will go on to discuss basic air circulation characteristics in mountain environments and how the Bar headed Goose has adapted to its iconic migration over the tallest mountain range on Earth: the Himalayas. The research draws from a satellite tracking experiment conducted in Sweden that explains normal wind selectivity in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my Public Speaking class about Chicago crime Attention Getter: I did not deserve to die that night. It was not my time. I pray for the person who has done this to me. I wish he could feel the pain that he put me through. (Barnum, 2003). In 2001, Louis Guccione Jr. repeatedly stabbed his newly ex girlfriend, Dana Roppo, when she requested a breakup. In her victim impact statement in the courtroom, she pleaded to the jury the first sentences that Art Barnum, a Chicago Tribune reporter copied and put into a 2003 edition of the newspaper and that I now began the presentation with. Relevance to audience: Many of us in this class are around the age of nineteen, the same age that Dana Roppo was when she was attacked. She only wanted a ride home when she was nearly killed. • 13. Amway in China Amway in China (A): A New Business ModelAssignment Questions1.What are Amway s core competencies?Amway has been a successfully growing business since 1959 due to its unique adaptation of direct marketing. The company has now expanded into over 80 countries and has been to some, an example of the American dream. This was what caused the tremendous growth and is what gave Amwayits most valuable asset; its distributors. Amway s distributors are all Independent Business Owners (IBOs) because they have no legal ties to Amway other than they buy the products directly and sign a brief code of conduct agreement. This however does not mean that IBOs are not extremely loyal to Amway. IBOs are literally the foundation of Amway s pyramid shaped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Amway is similar to other direct marketing companies such as Dell Computers in that it reduces product costs to consumers by bypassing retailers. Dell is also similar to Amway because by dealing directly with consumers it can find out exactly what the consumer needs without incurring consumer research costs that will be passed onto the consumer. Although Amway did not invent direct marketing it has been said that it reinvented it. Therefore Amway is unlike most companies that use direct marketing. Amway s direct marketing design resembles a pyramid but it not however a pyramid scheme or a ponzi scheme. A ponzi scheme is a illegal operation that promises high returns on short term investments. It continues with investors keeping their money in the investments thinking they are making large sums of money. News spreads to others who also invest and the amount collected continues to grow. If a few people decide to get out they are paid in order to disguise the scheme. Unfortunately for those who keep their money invested, they will never see any profits or perhaps their initial investment again. This is unlike a pyramid scheme because there are no levels of entry. A person who gets involved first does not collect more money than someone who gets in last. Pyramid schemes are characterized by costly start up costs, requirements to purchase products with virtually no value, promises of exponential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Analysis Of The Movie Fight Club In the movie Fight Club we are introduced to an average, white collared, middle aged man who is seemingly normal at first glance. However, it is clear that the narrator suffers from insomnia, anxiety, and depression very early in the film. The narrator attempts to combat these symptoms in a number of ways, however, the only way that he has found to be effective is by attending support groups on a nightly basis. The narrator soon creates an alter ego (though we do not know he is his alter ego until the end of the film) named Tyler Durden. Durden is more attractive, has a better physique, and is overall more confident than the narrator and Durden regularly takes control of the narrator without the narrator s knowledge to carry out tasks that the narrator does not believe he has the power to accomplish. This use of dissociation is a defense mechanism used by the narrator to remove himself from situations that may produce anxiety. The narrator has many instances in which he is not able to recollect things that happened that day or in previous days, such as having sexual relations with Marla (the narrator envisions Tyler having sexual relations with Marla, while it is him having sexual relations with Marla). To him, the killing of his friend is a sad but necessary sacrifice, and his well intentioned mistake destroys him. At the end, Antony says of him, This was the noblest Roman of them all. Although the film was originally released in 1995, many of the same issues around queer representation in media still remain over twenty years later. • 18. Robert Louis Stevenson Today Is Best Remembered As A Writer Robert Louis Stevenson today is best remembered as a writer of the Victorian Gothic and in particular for his novella, Jekyll and Hyde (1893). In this work, Utterson, a lawyer, discovers the horrible secrets his friend, Dr. Jekyll, has been hiding from him and the consequences that result. Straying away from mainstream science, Jekyll pursues his own catastrophic interests in order to separate the two sides of his morality and thusly creates his brutish double, Hyde. This text introduces the idea of human duality and brings forth the question of morality. However, duality, although important, is only one aspect of this novella, and there are other points of intrigue. An example of this intrigue is the role of women or rather the lack of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, Jekyll has no understandable justification to explain his experimentation, and his character can come across as irrational. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the patriarchy operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As previously stated, this text revolves around a male centric plot in which women do not play a role. Essentially, this story is about communities of men , focusing on their interactions and experiences in the London city as they attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women could potentially distract from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently removed women from any important role (Eberle Sinatra and Beauvais 151). Moving on, Stevenson himself even claimed to have difficulties bringing characters to life, in particular women, and this problem extends to some of his other works where women, and love as well, play a small role in comparison to the importance of the male characters (Linehan 34). While expressing disdain with male vanity and also with men s typical perceptions of women, Stevenson also conveyed fascination with the idea of how men underestimate women. By excluding women from his story, Stevenson may have cleverly demonstrated this underestimation, using both himself, as the writer, and the male characters in Jekyll and Hyde to explain this phenomenon. • 40. The Current State Of Water Supply Introduction Water, although considered a renewable resource is not available for infinite use as only six percent of the world s total supply is fresh water. Only this fresh water can be directly used for daily human needs and thus the amount of water actually available for use is much lower than the total amount of water present on the earth. The limited amount of water then poses the issue of water scarcity in some areas and makes the wise use and sustainable management of water extremely important. To ensure this sustainable management of water and prevent any misuse, it is important to have an appropriate institutional framework that looks after the water supply. The lack of a proper framework in the past has lead to the shifting of water management from the hands of the government to the private sector (Prasad, 2007). The purpose of writing this essay is to look into the current state of water supply, the issues surrounding the water supply and the correct method to overcome the prevailing issues. This essay will answer the question is privatization of water the solution to solving the current water crisis in different parts of the world? I will argue for the need of a public private partnership to ensure a balance between the private sector and the government. In Section (1) of the essay I will talk about the failings in the current water system and the reasons leading to a shift towards privatization. Followed by Section (2), which will simultaneously address the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This combination of low prices and strong advertising has firmly established Beaver s grip on the highest market share in the industry nearly 36%. Beaver s position is particularly strong in central Canada, where it has recently expanded its plant capacity to 4,000,000 units per year, more than 30% larger than each of its three competitors. This plant is the most efficient in the central region. In 1994, Beaver built a new plant with capacity of 1,000,000 units per year outside Vancouver, British Columbia. Costs in this plant were relatively high due to high wages and taxes, and below average labour productivity. In 2007, the company introduced new technology into this plant that made the plant more efficient, but did not increase its capacity. This technology increased labour productivity by about 20% and reduced labour costs per unit by about $1.25 (16.7%). For a plant with capacity of 1,000,000 units, the technology costs $3,000,000 to introduce. This is the first use in the industry of this new technology, which has attracted considerable interest in the industry. In 2007, Beaver s profits and its return on equity were both the second highest in the industry. Canco Ltd. Canco is the second largest company with a market share of 29%; however, its profits in 2007 were only third highest and about equal to the industry average. Its products have been of average

  • 44. The Divine Comedy By Virgil And Dante Relationships come in many forms with varying troubles and blessings. In the book, The Divine Comedy, two of the main characters, Virgil and Dante, can have a seemingly simple relationship, but when closely examined and reflected on, it is actually quite complex. They venture through the depths of hell, the complications of a long journey, and the perplexing reality of purgatory. Throughout their relationship they are faced with different gains and trials that they react to in various ways. Their circumstances are always changing and the course is rough, but throughout the entirety of their venture together, there remains one constant element, and that is the love they share in their relationship. It is outwardly expressed through their actions and words throughout the entirety of the book. The question I came across in reading The Divine Comedy is: Why does Dante use different terms to address Virgil? What do they mean or what is their significance? How does the development of their relationship affect the story as a whole? The most common name used by Dante is My guide , which is the most logical name he would use to call Virgil. This is because Virgil is leading Dante through all these different journeys, taking every step right by his side. Virgil has an understanding of Dante s uncertainty, and takes him under his wing. He was chosen for Dante to guide him and that is why Dante uses the possessive my to refer to him because Virgil was specifically provided ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
