3. Kochouseph Chittilappilly is a popular
name in our God's own country. He is
a famous businessman who owns V
Guard Industries Ltd, Wonderla
Bangalore & kochi.
4. Kochouseph Chittilappilly was born in 1950 in
Parappur, a few kilometers from Trichur
town, a quiet, laid back village. The very
name of the village suggests its nature-
'where birds abide'.
Among six children, Kochouseph Chittilappilly
was the first son of his parents. Parappur was a
village where there was no electricity during the
childhood of Kochouseph Chittilappilly. But when
he was studying in the third standard, his village
was electrified.
5. When taking into consideration his childhood
days, it is clear that he had reached this
current position by means of hard work
6. He did his schooling at the parish school in
Parappur in Thrissur and attended Christ
College, Irinjalakuda.
He was awarded a Masters degree in Physics
from St. Thomas College, Thrissur in 1970.
After completing an MSc in Physics he took up
the post of a trainee supervisor in an electric
and electronic manufacturing company in
Trivandrum for a stipend of Rs 150/-.
7. Gaining experience in their R & D
department stood him in good stead. Though
he dreamt of being a research assistant in
BARC and ISRO, and despite many
applications sent, he received no response.
Chittilappilly spent three years at this
company, gaining much knowledge and
experience and had been promoted to Junior
Engineer with a salary of Rs 850/-.
8. Since the company was not doing well and
with no job offers on the horizon, he decided
to start out on his own with a small scale
stabilizer unit. Chittilappilly had the
confidence that he could compensate the Rs
850/- salary by selling 50 stabilizers a month.
Sensing a need in the market for voltage
stabilizers, he set up a small manufacturing
unit in Thrissur, with a borrowed capital of Rs
1, 00,000 and 2 workers for assistance
9. Chittilappilly began this unit in a one room
tenement in Ernakulam. Culling the ‘V’ from
‘Volt’, and a kangaroo mascot to indicate
‘protection’, ‘V Guard’ was on its way.
10. Capturing the market in a short span of time,
he then diversified the product range of the
company to include Pumps & Motors, Electric
Water Heaters, Solar Water Heaters, Wiring
Cables, UPS, and Ceiling Fans
11. Further diversifying his business ventures, in
2000 he launched Veegaland, a one of its kind
amusement and water theme park in Cochin,
Kerala.
12. Having set the company on wheels he toyed with
the idea of diversification and a completely new
course- a water theme park. He had travelled
extensively to Europe and America and assessed
the potential. The thought of replicating it in
Cochin where the terrain was ideal and water was
plentiful was exciting.
Delivering on the quality of the rides, meeting
international safety standards were all a daunting
task but he decided to take it on with a firm belief
that with perseverance, optimism and a positive
attitude all things were possible.
13. A few years down the line and as a natural
progression to Veegaland, He embarked on a
larger and more refined water theme park in
Bangalore - Wonderla He followed up the
success of Veegaland by launching Wonderla, a
second amusement park at Bangalore,
Karnataka.
14. Wonderla’, in Bangalore, which is the biggest amusement
park in India.
15. Kochouseph is married to Sheila and has two
sons Arun Chittilappilly and Mithun
Chittilappilly. Sheila is the Managing Director of
V-Star creations, a group company. Arun heads
the amusement park business Veegaland and
Mithun focuses on V Guard.
17. Today V-Guard is a listed company with BSE
and NSE having various electrical, electronic
and electro-mechanical products and a
turnover racing past Rs. 1700 crores.
18. He is also a humanitarian par excellence. Ailing
patients battling with kidney disease, the agony
they go through, and the difficulty in finding a
donor set Mr. Kochouseph Chittilappilly thinking
on a different path, many would have never
ventured upon.
He decided to donate one of his kidney’s to a
poor and needy truck driver whom he had never
met before.
Though his family and friends initially
discouraged him, he managed to convince them.
19. Meanwhile he read about Rev. Fr. Chiramel who was
an inspiration to him and joined hands with Fr.
Chiramel to find a recipient and eventually formed a
donor program. The program enables easy access to
donors, legal and documentation assistance.
20. Mr. Kochouseph Chittilappilly used to jot down
inspirational thoughts over the years. This was
then authored into a book called Practical
Wisdom-1, a practical management guide that
would come in handy to budding entrepreneurs,
managers and management students alike.
He has also compiled a collection of his
childhood memories in a book called
“Ormakillivathil”. The experience of donating a
kidney is also taking shape in the form of
another book, “The Gift.”
21. Mr. Kochouseph Chittilappilly is the recipient of
numerous awards, which were bestowed on him
for his exemplary performance in business and
philanthropical work. Among others was the
Samman Pathra Award for top income tax payer
from Honourable Union Minister of State for
Finance and the Newsmaker of the Year 2011
award from Malayala Manorama
22. Chittilappilly is the chairman of the Stray Dog
Free movement, which advocates action against
the risks allegedly posed by stray dogs in Kerala,
including the amendment of legislation
forbidding the killing of these dogs.
Chittilappilly has staged hunger strikes to protest
this legislation. He has stated that the
government's actions amount to valuing stray
dogs over human lives and property .He has
encouraged citizens to pressure the government
to amend these laws, and to kill stray dogs
themselves despite the accompanying 50-rupee
fine.
