Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is an Indian entrepreneur and chairman of Biocon Limited, a biotechnology company based in Bangalore, India. She studied zoology and fermentation science, becoming one of the first women to earn a Master Brewer degree from University of Ballarat in Australia. However, she faced discrimination in seeking work as a brewmaster in India. She founded Biocon in 1978, growing it into a major biotechnology company. Mazumdar-Shaw has received many honors including being named one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes and TIME magazine's 100 most influential people. She holds honorary doctorates from several universities in recognition of her contributions to advancing biotechnology and science.
