2020 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report ™
Teaching and Learning Edition .
Anticipating the future is human nature. As anyone
who has tried meditation knows, staying in the present
is surprisingly difficult because our minds spend so
much time reflecting on the past or anticipating the future.
Humans are planners, worriers, and dreamers, and those plans,
worries, and dreams are rooted in our mental constructs of the
future. For sixteen years, the Horizon Report has provided
a construct of the future of educational technology in higher
education, based on a structure of three time horizons.
Anticipating the future is risky. As any science fiction reader or
future-enthusiast knows, extricating present-state experience
from visions of the future is very difficult.1
The track record
of predictions—whether about the stock market, the World
Series, world events, or technology—is generally so poor that
it’s a wonder anyone dares to make them. With technology in
particular, we tend to overestimate its short-term impact and
underestimate its long-term impact.2
The Horizon Report has
provided ample documentation of predictions, from educational
technology experts, of the future impact of educational
technology on teaching, learning, and creative inquiry.
Unfortunately, its track record has been described as fair to
middling.3
Why would EDUCAUSE bother to continue this
publication if its level of accuracy is so low?
Describes the relationship between Human Performance Technology (HPT) and Knowledge Management (KM) and proposes a framework for successful KM/CoP implementation

So where does Australian organisational learning stand on the world stage. Are we aspiring for excellence or just cruising? Is the tall poppy syndrome at work? The Australian academic sector (Universities and Schools) has a structured and focused approach to defining what excellence in learning means and how to achieve it. This approach seems to be missing in organisational and corporate learning. Maybe we are running so fast that we may never stop to improve our running technique. We talk to an experienced panel that architect and manage Learning in their organisations to deliver business results. We will ask what Learning excellence means to them and how they plan to get there
Sponsored & Hosted by: Elluminate, Inc. (http://www.elluminate.com/)
This webinar will explore a broad range of issues in the corporate market. Today organizations face a variety of challenges such as an aging workforce, skill/talent shortages, loss of institutional knowledge, and limited resources for developing their workforce to optimize portfolios, infrastructure and assets for improved growth and returns. Managing all these aspects (e.g., financial, operations, human capital) in a fast paced, adapting global environment is challenging. Specific areas of interest may focus on how to attract, develop and retain talented and diverse individuals which enables true optimization of portfolios, infrastructure and assets for improved growth and returns leveraging learning technologies.

10.00 Embracing the Power of Complexity in KM
Organisations expend substantial resources attempting to bring order to situations
viewed as disordered and out of control. While there are many cases where this is
appropriate, there are also complex organisational environments where these efforts are
a waste of time and resources, as well as often being detrimental to productivity and
innovation. The uncertainties and ambiguities of complex situation feature conflicting
requirements where solving one part of a problem may result in problems in other areas
This session delves into the practical application of concepts from complexity theory
to KM programs leading to cost-effective and constructive outcomes. These KM
programs follow the Build phase of the Australian KM Standard using organic, bottom-up
techniques that allow solutions to emerge by empowering frontline employees to use
their own knowledge to make significant decisions and allowing safe-fail of experimental
innovations. Consultants who advise this approach often report resistance from
traditional managers, citing lack of appreciation, imagination and courage to balance
risks, relax control, devolve responsibility and build a culture of trust. Overcoming this
resistance is a key element of complex KM programs.
Through real-world examples, this session will cover the following topics:
• Identifying which situations and problems are indeed complex and are best
treated as such
• The range of techniques and capabilities required to realise the benefits of
embracing complexity
• Ways of estimating risk and demonstrating the potential rewards when
embracing complexity.
Dr Helen Hasan, Associate Professor, Information Systems, AHSRI, Faculty of Business,
University of Wollongong
Delegates will learn to recognise situations which should be treated as inherently
complex and appreciate the possibilities that these situations offer for productive,
innovative and sustainable organisational outcomes. They will explore the capabilities
needed to run KM programs using approaches and techniques based on concepts from
complexity theory and be able to demonstrate their benefits to leaders of conservative
and sceptical organisations.

John Stepper of the Working Out Loud movement says that WOL helps people become more effective,
more connective and happier – a big claim.
So what is Working Out Loud and why is it being adopted by so many organisations, both big and small?
Can WOL’s effectiveness be measured, for the organisation and for the individual? Does it really enhance
staff engagement?
In this session we will bring WOL into focus and take delegates on a tour of the WOL world. In addition, we
will explore the DIY WOL model implemented recently by staff at the University of Melbourne and learn from
their experience of implementing and participating in WOL circles across a large and complex organisation.

11.15 A Journey in Building Scalable Customer Centric Self Service and Support Content
This case study will take you through the process of how Xero discovered what was needed to change, their
wins and losses, and how they are moving Xero’s self service and support knowledge from being product
centric and centrally managed, to being customer centric and collectively created and managed
This session will demonstrate:
• What are the self service and support knowledge needs of a hyper growth organisation
• The world of self service - what makes help content work
• Lessons learned from the project (currently underway)
Airdre Knox, Strategic Knowledge Manager, Xero
Xero is a hyper growth company. It is rapidly growing its customer base, marketplace and product globally.
To tackle Xero’s scalability needs, an automation program of work was established in 2015. The estimated
speed and size of growth dictated the need to streamline and automate Xero’s operations. This included
looking at the role of knowledge, in particular how it enables customers and the role it plays in driving down
cost to serve, whilst improving customer and staff satisfaction.
12.00 Conveying Big Data Insights with Stories
Big data holds out a promise of tantalising insights that will help leaders grab new opportunities. Regardless
of how good the analysis might be there’s still is point where the insight is shared with a decision maker so
they can take action. Transferring the insight can be done so they just get it or they can easily bury the lead.
This session describes how story techniques can ensure the message is received loud and clear.
• An insight is when we unexpectedly come to a better story. How to find this story in the analysis
• How to share this better story with a decision maker so they can act
• Sometimes the insight is up against the prevailing and powerful story of the day. How to dislodge
the existing story with the new story
Delegates will learn how to convey insights derived from analysis and share them with decision makers so
they can take action, all using story base techniques.

Strategic Planning: The deliberate approach vs. the emergent approach
Breakout: Which approach is used (or would work best) at your company, and why?
Find out what we know: How do you determine what knowledge is truly critical for capture, retention, and sharing?
Breakout: What knowledge at your company is key to retaining your most essential capabilities?
Gap analysis: How do you determine where the gaps exist in effective knowledge capture?
Breakout: Report on what your company is doing to husband intellectual capital; list three possible gaps where your
company is not capturing key knowledge effectively.

10. B How to Change your Culture in 10 days: An Agile / Lean Knowledge Management
Case Study Led Blueprint
Registration: 8.30 am
Workshop time: 9.00 am - 12.00pm
Facilitators: Geri Overberg, Capability Manager, Automation, Telstra Service Operations
Shane Dwyer, GM Automation Technologies, Automation, Telstra Service Operations
Kim Dalzell, Information Manager, Automation, Telstra Service Operations
What do a Firetruck, Drone and Smoke Flares have to do with Automation?
Telstra’s Automation group is dramatically changing how they do what they do – to Automate with even more agility and speed than they have
done before, and embed Knowledge Management into everything they do.
Telstra Automation’s transformation journey started in August 2015, with a change from traditional development methods to Agile/Lean delivery.
As part of this journey, the Automation group shook things up in December, and undertook something completely new – an Automation Mara-
thon AKA an ‘Automathon’. This event was intended to disrupt the normal ways of working, and involve all employees and contractors in a two
day innovation and creation marathon. And there were no rules – participants could pitch and create anything they saw fit and collaborate across
normal team boundaries.
The measure of success for this event was employee health; our aim was to have people so engaged that they would go home and talk about it.
And the outcome was explosive. Literally! There was an explosion of orange, innovation, creativity, development of ideas, food and fun. Some
participants were so passionate about making their ideas seem real-life that they bought in some serious toys: a drone and a firetruck (complete
with smoke flares).
Our teams generated great ideas that will be carried forward into the Program of Work: a proof of concept to Automate different parts of the
development process; a 24/7 portal to our other offices to ensure better face-to-face collaboration; the drone group were exploring ways to provide
context to service delivery staff when supporting disasters.
Come to the workshop and learn about the key elements and approach the Telstra Automation group used to transform their culture including in
the space of 10 days, and on very limited budget, and see how you could do the same for your business.
Shane Dwyer: With international leadership experience in Digital Media, Shane has built his reputation around helping technology teams
reenergise and rewrite their delivery playbooks. He has worked for world class organisations, including BSKYB, ITV, BBC, Medibank and
Telstra.
Shane is currently leading Telstra Automation’s ‘Better Ways of Working’ program and is utilising scaled Agile, Lean principles and a touch of
creative flare to accelerate delivery of value to its customers.
Shane has recently moved to the Mornington Peninsula where he has successfully weened his 3 young children off their iPads and
reacquainted them with nature.
Geri Overberg: With over 16 years’ experience driving company-wide knowledge management solutions and creating compelling solutions
with high user adoption, Geri has developed a reputation as an influential and persuasive change agent by creating vision, and enthusing
people to embrace change. Geri is now focussed on building capability and leading cultural change in an agile, DevOps environment for
Telstra’s Automation group. Always there to focus on the human side, where else better to do this than in a highly technical Automation
environment?
When Geri isn’t trying to understand technical acronyms, she is honing her ‘native vs weed’ identification skills to maintain her 5 acres of
Australian bush that she shares with her family.
About your workshop leaders:
Kim Dalzell: With a background in Human Resources across a number of industries including Government, Professional Services and
Telecommunications and having worked in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia, Kim has a strong focus on engagement and
change. After a recent move into Knowledge Management, Kim is now focussed on embedding a knowledge sharing culture within TSO
with a strong focus on the people aspect of KM.
