Micro-hybrid vehicles using lithium-ion batteries provide a cost-effective way for automakers to improve fuel economy and comply with increasing CAFE standards. Lithium-ion batteries are superior to lead-acid batteries for micro-hybrid functions because they accept charges more quickly, allowing for improved recuperation of braking energy. Lithium-ion batteries also last longer and are lighter than lead-acid batteries, reducing replacement costs and weight over the vehicle's lifetime. Automakers will likely pursue a balanced strategy including micro-hybrids to cost-effectively improve fuel economy as required.

Wood-plastic composite profiles are made through two main approaches - direct extrusion from raw ingredients which dominates in uncalibrated profiles like deck boards, or extrusion from predried, precompounded pellets which provides more consistent feeding for thin-wall, multi-hollow profiles. WPC is now being used more for sidings, wall panelling, flooring, and interior decoration profiles. Building and construction applications hold the largest share of the WPC market, though automotive use is growing due to increased demand for recyclable materials. Modeling and Analysis of the Battery Packs and Modules in A123 Systems

In A123 Systems, CAE/FEA tools are widely used to improve the efficiency of the design on battery packs and modules. A123 engineers utilize Altair’s HyperWork Suite for structural FEA including linear and nonlinear statics analysis, modal frequency and random vibration analysis, as well as nonlinear dynamic analysis such as mechanical shock and drop test analysis. Two examples are presented in this presentation. The first example is a systematic approach to simplify and accurately model complex prismatic battery modules for vibration FEA. The second example presented is an approach to utilize Altair’s partner program DesignLife to conduct durability analysis.

These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze how electric vehicles will become economic feasible if the right design decisions are made to benefit from the falling costs of electronics. One key decision is the use of micro-grids to enable direct charging of the batteries, which is more efficient. A second key decision is the number of recharging stations and thus the frequency by which users can recharge their vehicles. More frequent recharging means smaller batteries can be used and thus the slow rate of improvements for energy storage densities can be overcome. A third key decision is wired vs. wireless charging. Wireless charging eliminates the time consuming maintenance and fitting problems of wires and thus enables faster hookups. It also benefits from the rapidly falling cost of electronics; the falling cost of ICs, power electronics, and thin-film coils means that wireless charging is likely to become economically feasible in the near future and allow the problem of low energy storage densities of batteries to be solved.

Electric Vehicles (EV) use a battery to store the electric energy that powers the motor. EV batteries are charged by plugging the vehicle into an electric power source. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and all-electric vehicles (EVs)—also called electric drive vehicles collectively—use electricity either as their primary fuel or to improve the efficiency of conventional vehicle designs. Reduced fuel consumption and emissions, optimized fuel efficiency and performance, lower operational cost, rising conventional fuel costs are some factors that make use of EVs advantageous. However, tech and other challenges are in front of EVs to make them popular selling asset among masses. High EV price limit the current customer group to consist of primarily tech savvy and environmental ideologists, however, new research indicates that charging time and driving range are most influencing the purchase decision. Due to scale of production and technological development, it seems likely that there will be significant price erosion related to EV batteries over the next 10 years. This will most likely influence EV prices and increase sales. Moreover, along with the gradual emergence of EVs- innovators and entrepreneurs are introducing new and visionary business models. Incidentally, EVs are sold on subscription- and rental companies are beginning to include EVs as part of their fleet of program. For example, as integrators or mobility service providers, the EV value chain creates opportunities for newcomers to participate and create value on mobility market. The integrators are the future industry actors, who will handle the integration between EV charging and intelligent home billing etc. Reportedly, ECOtality partnered Sprint Nextel and Cisco to deliver wireless connectivity for charging stations and home energy management solutions/controllers. This report aims to highlight the drivers and inhibitors that influence the roll-out of electric cars in terms of adoption speed, cost and user acceptance. The report is largely based on the general market data, which has been analysed and correlated with the data from fleet test of electric vehicles which was conducted in and around the metropolitan area of Copenhagen (Denmark). The report also explores an analysis of comparative advantages of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles over EVs.

For its latest Prius 4 Toyota has designed a new power control unit (PCU). The PCU has two types of power module, one for the motor inverter and the other for the boost converter and generator inverter.
