Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

1. Research – Poster analysis
What is the title of the film? What can you say about the way in which the title graphics have been written? The title of the film poster I have chosen to analyse is ‘The Guardian’. The title graphics are very bold and securing, which may show a potential theme to the film’s storyline. The letters in black show contrast to the white background which represents a difference in themes which could represent a story within the film plot. Also the name ‘The Guardian’ represents safety and being looked after.
Describe the key images on your poster. Why have they been chosen? What other pictures can you see? Only one image is used on this poster, a ‘U.S Coast Guard’ helicopter stationary with two crew members alongside shows the potential main characters and the total point of the film. These images is used to create a securing feeling for the audience, and to indicate the content of the film.
What do you think the film will be about? What type or genre of film will it be? What makes you say this? As I have said by looking at the poster I would expect a safety or recovery theme to the film – with rescues and life savings, involving the two local characters. I would anticipate an energy packed thriller, with life savings and maybe fatalities. The image is placed under a camera effect to make it appear thrilling and focused in the background – also being accompanied with a tag line, ‘how do you decide who lives or dies?’
Who is starring in the film? Where are the stars’ names placed on the
poster? Why? Two very well known actors are used in the film, ‘Kevin
Costner’ and ‘Ashton Kutcher’ these names are placed above the main image,
above the actor’s heads. Using the themed colours, the names blend with the
image whilst being outstanding. These names are positioned here to be
noticed and acknowledged to attract viewers.
What are the most important colours on your poster? Why do you think these were chosen? The most important colours on this poster are orange, black and white. These colours clearly connate the U’S Coast Guard’s colours, and also help create tension and contrast which may be two features of the film itself. By only using these colours the poster is very vivid and noticeable which may attract its thrill seeking audience.
What is the tagline? The tag line on this poster is, ‘How do you decide who lives or who dies?’ – this line clearly draws attention to the content of the film. The audience understands there may be decisions to make within the film which hold the dependency of life or death. This will attract the audience and give insight to the potential film plot.
Who do you think is the target audience for the film? How has the poster been made attractive to these people? I would imagine the target audience for this film would be mainly men aged 15-45. This audience may be attracted to the poster’s bright colours and promises of death and near death occurrences. Also with very masculine actors who are well known for action packed roles the audience can understand the potential storyline. Although females may be attracted to the possibility of ‘guardian’ – the protection factor. Also the potentially sad, sob storyline with death and decisions.
What do you think is the Unique Selling Point (USP) of this film? (What makes it different from other films like it?) The USP of this film which seperates it from other thrillers is its power to attract a wide range of audience with its two different actors. One may appeal to the older more traditional audience and one appeals to the younger audience which gives a good mix to the target audience.
What information can you find in the credit block?
