INTRODUCTION
 China’s most influential business leader.
 Jack Ma or Ma Yun (马云) is the extraordinary founder and CEO of the
Alibaba Group, which owns several successful internet companies in
China.
 Alibaba Group was established in 1999 by 18 people led by Jack Ma, a
former English teacher.
 Alibaba's e-commerce platforms cater to both Chinese and global
consumers, though the majority of its transactions are generated
domestically.
MORE ABOUT HIM
 As a child, Mr. Ma was bad at Maths but
fascinated by English.
 His passion to be a better speaker used to even
drive him to a hotel located near his residence,
which was frequented by foreigners.
 After applying to many jobs, he took job as a
English teacher.
 In 1955, he wanted to explore more about the
internet and how it could benefit CHINA.
 The websites holds 40 different categories of
product including electronics etc.

Challenges and Rejections faced by Jack Ma
 Every successful leader has to undergo a lot of criticism and
failure. Jack Ma faced a bit too much. Some of the challenges
faced by him are-
 He failed a key primary school test two times.
 He scored 1 out of 120 points on the math portion of his college
entrance exam. To quote Ma: “I am not good at math, have never
studied management, and still cannot read accounting reports.”
 He was rejected from Harvard 10 times.
 After graduating from college, he applied to 30 different jobs and
was subsequently rejected from all of them.
 He even applied to be a police officer but got rejected.
 Out of 24 KFC applicants in his pool, 23 were hired. Jack Ma was
the only one to be rejected.
 After he started Alibaba, he suffered multiple failures. The
company did not earn any profit for the first three years.
 After facing all these challenges he is one of the richest man in
China with net worth of 28.3 billion USD.
 The biggest challenge for Jack Ma was when Alibaba did not
receive any funding in first three years, the company was
making no profit.
 He decided to start his own payment program known as
“Alipay”, through which international customers could pay.
 Sharing his experience, he said “ I discussed Alipay with
several people who called it the stupidest idea, but I didn’t
give up.”
 Today, about 80 million people use Alipay.

 The primary revenue comes from advertising
fees from Alibaba
 The second source of revenue comes from
customers for value-added services, listing
fees as well as membership fees.
 Alibaba uses a competition pricing
 Penetration pricing is one of the marketing
strategies that Alibaba implies to set a low price in
order to increase sales and market share
 Discounts are given provided that the customers
buy products in bulk or during festival.
 Last but not least, value-added services are applied
services such as shipping, instant delivery,
guarantees, warranties and many more are added
up to make sure that the total cost of the products
with added services is higher than the production
cost in order to make profit
Expansion Strategy

➜They are going to consolidate and expand their current
market, particularly by enhancing reputation, optimizing
user experience and increasing their market share in
first-tier cities(GDP over $US300 billion)
➜They are refocusing on the country’s wealthy mega-
cities, when Alibaba announced it would add China’s
capital, Beijing, as a second headquarters.
➜In addition to targeting first-tier Chinese cities, the
company in 2016 would continue to promote e-
commerce among rural Chinese residents and globally
through its international e-commerce websites.
 The company will continue to build up
channels that allow international brands and
merchants to sell online to Chinese
consumers.
 80% of China’s e-commerce works under
Jack and is likely to expand it over 100%
