Isabella I of Castile was born in 1451 in Madrigal de las Altas Torres. She married Ferdinand II of Aragon in 1469, uniting Castile and Aragon. Isabella defeated her niece Juana to claim the throne of Castile in 1474. Following her victory, Castile and Aragon were permanently united under Isabella and Ferdinand. Isabella sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage in 1492, which led to the discovery of the Americas and greatly expanded Castile's power. She also oversaw the completion of the Reconquista and issued laws protecting the native population in the newly discovered lands.
