This document proposes a design to conserve waste water from backwashing sand filters at a steam generation plant. Backwashing filters is necessary to remove built-up sediments but wastes large volumes of water. The design involves filtering backwash water through a standby filter and newly designed multimedia filter, then supplying the filtered water to the plant's cooling tower. This would save an estimated 50 cubic meters of water per day (7 lakh liters per year) by reusing the backwash water rather than wasting it. The multimedia filter combines different filter media like anthracite, sand and garnet to efficiently remove particles from the backwash water and allow the water to be reused for cooling.
