teaching
• To become a much more conscious teacher
• To enhance your teaching through giving it
thinking time
•To improve the student learning experience
•To gain recognition for your teaching expertise
•To have a portable teaching asset
•To improve your career progression…

• AFHEA / FHEA – the individual’s personal practice
activity
• SFHEA – the development and mentoring of others
in learning and teaching
• PFHEA – the demonstrable impact in learning and
teaching activity by influencing policy and strategy

D3.7 Successful coordination, support, supervision,
management and/or mentoring of others (whether
individuals and/or teams) in relation to teaching
and learning
At Descriptor 3, it is particularly important to
demonstrate how you know your practice has
influenced others, been effective and generated
impact.
This is the overarching descriptor and evidence for this
should be found across the application. It is the
essential distinguishing characteristic of the Senior
Fellow.
17
Remember 3.7
• Applications should relate to the positive impact on
student learning
• Claims should evidence successful engagement with
appropriate dimensions of UKPSF
• Learning may also take place through reflection on
experiences which have not worked
• Claims should not be based on role, job description or
status of individual
• Outcomes, impact and influence (and reflection of
evidence of same) much more important than role and
activities per se
18
No brainers
Paired discussions and one-to-one conversations
about your areas of activity

Take a pack of five cards. Choose one you like. Jot down:
1. What exciting things have you done in this area of
practice?
2. How did this come about? What drove you to
experiment?
3. Why did you take an approach? What beliefs about
teaching and how students learn do they reveal?
4. What impact did your approach have on the students’
learning? How do you know?
5. How have you influenced others through your
practice? 22

Editor's Notes

  1. The unreflective life is not worth living
  2. All interact K + V = A!
  3. Institutional and survival reasons. TEF, KIS, funding formula
  4. Claim – application is a claim – not an assignment. + authenticity is crucial = Engagement = all based on examples of practice – not just theoretical Reflection = using the Framework dimensions to explore the how and why of your practice Alignment = demonstrating that your practice is aligned with the principles of the Framework Commitment = continuing commitment to the value and quality of t & l – both your own and if appropriate others CPD – evidence based, and where appropriate scholarly Currency = need to demonstrate relevance – no absolute rule on this – the sooner the better
  5. Pairs – interview each other about the one area of practice
