Albert Ellis (1913-2007) developed Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) which was one of the first cognitive behavior therapies. REBT is based on the premise that irrational beliefs cause unhealthy emotions and behaviors, not external events alone. The A-B-C framework is central to REBT and explains that Activating events (A) do not directly cause Consequences (C), but rather one's Beliefs (B) about the event that largely impact one's emotional Consequences. REBT aims to help clients identify and dispute their irrational beliefs in order to develop more rational thinking and healthier emotional reactions.
