Education: Making a Sense?
Prof. Sanjeev Rastogi
State Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Lucknow
What is Education ?
 Is it schooling ??
 Is it the information
given at schools and
colleges ??
 Is it a qualification
needed for a job for
your future security ??
 Or it is some thing
beyond this
What is Education ?
 Education is an active
process of inviting truth and
possibility, encouraging and
giving time to discovery.
 It is a wise, hopeful and
respectful cultivation of
learning undertaken in the
belief that all should have
the chance to share in life.
Education Vs Schooling
 Education is a social process – ‘a process of living and not
a preparation for future living’
 Schooling prepares us for future living whereas education
prepares us to live at its best with present.
 The idea of education is to make your present as beautiful
as possible
 John Dewey (1916) an American psychologist,
philosopher and educationist
Are well schooled also well educated ?
 What is socially expected from education is a change in behavior
and values
You are well educated. You should not have done it this way.
 This is not really happening
 On the contrary the real fact is
 A big number of crimes are being done at schools and colleges
 All level of stakeholders are involved in such crimes
 In many such crimes , people having high level of schooling are found involved
Crime by Educated people on the Rise
 NCRB ( National Crime Record Beureu) reported in 2012
 In last 10 years Indian prisons have reported 78% increase in
number of Graduate convicts and 68% in Post graduate
convicts. (In Maharashtra the growth is 140 %.)
 The share among total convicts increased from 3.24% to
5.49%
Depicting Education
Educational Gaps in Society
 Not linked with human values
 Not linked with personal upbringing in various
dimensions (mental, physical , social, spiritual
and interpersonal)
 Not linked with development of a sense of
accountability
 Not linked with respect to ecosystem
Vicious Circle of Earning and Spending
 Early age Spend in learning to earn
 Middle age Spend in earning
 Late age Spend in spending for what is earned due
to the ignorance of general health principles
 Onset of most life style diseases is common in late middle
age .
Can Ayurveda Help Bridge the Gap in Existing
Education?
 Ayurveda offers a flexible and personalized set of
knowledge which
Is demonstrable for its benefits practically
Offers impacts upon individual as well as on
society
Offers high level of quality living to its followers
What is Ayurveda ?
 An anecdotal belief ?
 A genuine medical science?
 An empirical philosophy?
 A folk lore system of offering household help to sick people?
 A mystical unproven old traditional practice in India ?
 A healing system which offers cure through herbs, animal produce and
natural minerals etc.
 Or much more………………………..????
Ayurveda is ……??
 A knowledge which helps you attaining a quality based
better life
 Both literally and practically
 आयु = Life वेद = knowledge
 Ayurveda is much more than offering cure to a disease
The Ideology of Ayurveda
Four pursuits of a human life are
Attainable only in a perfectly healthy state
 Disease wipes off the opportunity of obtaining these pursuits
Ayurveda prepares you
 With its novel and proactive preventive and curative
wisdom
 To achieve the perfect health
 In order to achieve the higher pursuits of life namely
Objective of Ayurveda
 Two fold objectives
 To preserve the health of healthy people
 To eliminate the pathology from the sick
What is understood by स्वास््य
 Is it health ?
 Is it mental , physical , social or spiritual well being ?
 We tried to define perfect state health through various parameters
 Unfortunately these do not really define
What is स्वास््य??
 Ayurveda proposes a much wider definition of स्वास््य
 Literal meaning of स्वास््य
 स्व stands for self
 स्र् stands for situated
 So स्वस्र् is some one who understands his real self and
behaves accordingly
Who you are ? Knowing the Self: Knowing the प्रकृ तत
 प्रकृ तत stands for प्र and कृ तत
 प्र is primary , first or prototype
 कृ तत is creation
 So प्रकृ तत is your primary biological specificity
 It gives you a specific physical, physiological and
psychological uniqueness .
 Till you adhere to your प्रकृ तत , you remain स्वस्र्
The specialized situation
 ववकृ तत stands for
 वव = ववशेष= special
 कृ तत = creation
 The creation which is not natural, is pathological
 Intention of the treatment therefore is always to regain
the normalcy
 प्रकृ तत स्र्ापन is synonymous to treatment in Ayurveda
Stop Pretending, It Marks That You Are Sick
Quality of life
Life helpful to others
Life detrimental to others
Pleasurable life
Miserable life
Science of happiness: Eudiamonic versus Hedonic
Acts
Eudiamonic happiness
 Achieved by helping others
Hedonic Happiness
 Achieved by buying happiness through comfort and luxury
 Acts at molecular level by regulating the gene expression through up or
down regulation
 Eudiamonic acts are related with down regulation of stress related genes
where as Hedonic acts are related with their up regulation
Random act of kindness
 May give you a pleasure more lasting than buying your
favorite cloths
Who Remains Healthy ?
Who Does not fall sick ?

  • 1. Introducing Ayurveda in Mainstream Education: Making a Sense? Prof. Sanjeev Rastogi State Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Lucknow
  • 2. What is Education ?  Is it schooling ??  Is it the information given at schools and colleges ??  Is it a qualification needed for a job for your future security ??  Or it is some thing beyond this
  • 3. What is Education ?  Education is an active process of inviting truth and possibility, encouraging and giving time to discovery.  It is a wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life.
  • 4. Education Vs Schooling  Education is a social process – ‘a process of living and not a preparation for future living’  Schooling prepares us for future living whereas education prepares us to live at its best with present.  The idea of education is to make your present as beautiful as possible  John Dewey (1916) an American psychologist, philosopher and educationist
  • 5. Are well schooled also well educated ?  What is socially expected from education is a change in behavior and values  “आप तो पढे लिखे है , आपको ऐसा नह ीं करना चाहहये” You are well educated. You should not have done it this way.  This is not really happening  On the contrary the real fact is  A big number of crimes are being done at schools and colleges  All level of stakeholders are involved in such crimes  In many such crimes , people having high level of schooling are found involved
  • 6. Crime by Educated people on the Rise  NCRB ( National Crime Record Beureu) reported in 2012  In last 10 years Indian prisons have reported 78% increase in number of Graduate convicts and 68% in Post graduate convicts. (In Maharashtra the growth is 140 %.)  The share among total convicts increased from 3.24% to 5.49%

  • 17. What is स्वास््य??  Ayurveda proposes a much wider definition of स्वास््य  Literal meaning of स्वास््य  स्व stands for self  स्र् stands for situated  So स्वस्र् is some one who understands his real self and behaves accordingly
