To Connect to a Hot Spot
 Select wireless icon in the lower left corner
of toolbar
 Select the hot spot and click Connect
 Additional steps may be required in the
browser (agree to usage terms)

Bookmarks, menus, and
home pages
 Each browser uses the star to set a
bookmark
 Each browser has a menu which lets you
choose a home or startup page and set
other advanced options
Hands On
 Go to a site you visit often
 Set a bookmark
 Go to Google
 Access your bookmarked site
Tip: Bookmarks will show up in a toolbar if
you have your bookmarks bar set to show.
Tabs
 Windows vs. tabs
 Convenient way to keep multiple sites up
at once.
Hands On
 Open multiple tabs and switch between
them.
Advanced tip: You can bookmark a set of
tabs or have a set of bookmarks open as a
home page.
The Power of Right Clicking
 To copy
 To open a link in a new tab
 To bookmark a link
 To save an image
 To download a file
…and so much more
Hands On
 Do a Google search for something you’re
interested in, e.g. how to crochet.
 Right-click to open a search result in a
new tab.
 Go back to search results and right-click to
open another search result in a new tab.
Downloading
 To download an image from the Internet,
right-click and Save image as…
 Remember where you save it (desktop or
a folder).
 Be sensitive to copyright issues.
 Make sure you know what you are saving!
Beware of non-images, exe files, etc.
Hands On
 Right-click an image on the Internet.
 Save it to the desktop.
 Go to your desktop and view the image.
Mousing over
 Mouse over icons without clicking to get
tips.
 Mouse over a link to see where it goes
without clicking it.
Email
 If you don’t have email, Gmail is a good,
free choice.
 All Google accounts include Gmail access
 Reply vs. Reply all

 Look at your spam folder

Tip: You can set up mailing lists for groups

General precautions
 Run anti-virus software.
 Update your software when prompted (or
turn on auto-updates).
 Don’t ever give anyone your passwords,
social security number, or other personal
information.
 Be extra careful on public computers and
networks.
 Sign out from your accounts on public
computers.
Email
 Email may not really be from the sender
shown. Be careful!
 Rather than click on links, type them in
yourself.
 Mouse over links to see the real
destination.
 Don’t download (or click on) any
attachment unless you are SURE of who it
came from and that it’s safe.
