This document discusses IBM's innovations in smart cities initiatives and the Internet of Things. It notes that IBM was awarded nearly 6,000 patents in 2010, more than any other company. It also discusses challenges facing cities like population growth, resource scarcity, and the growth of connected devices. IBM's smart cities solutions can help with issues like water management, energy use, transportation, and environmental monitoring through the use of sensors, data analysis, and optimization of systems.
The economies of mankind have evolved dramatically over time. From hunter-gatherers, we settled down once
we discovered the art of farming, thereby giving rise to the first settlements and the first true economies.
Nevertheless, as settlements became towns we became reliant on trading, even more so as empires started to
flourish in the ancient times. This, in turn, resulted in a manufacturing base which grew rapidly with the start of
the industrial era in the 1800’s which further cemented the dominant position that the West had in the world.
However, as we know, it did not stop there and soon it became apparent that in order to manage such complex
systems, information and knowledge was required. The age of the knowledge worker was upon us and it is estimated by the IDC that the growth rate of knowledge workers worldwide doubled compared to that of other occupations between 1999 and 2007. This has underpinned the continuing economic growth of the West, but also necessitated structural changes in its economies as knowledge work differs not only from manual work in that it delivers information rather than goods, but it also requires higher degrees of flexibility and autonomy and
is reliant on innovation driven by collaboration. This, in turn, necessitates different systems, working practices, technology and organisational models.
Whilst the West has been building up its knowledge industry, it did so at the expense of its manufacturing
industry as its citizens became wealthier and rising labour costs made it economically unviable to compete with
developing countries who were not burdened with such welfare and legacy costs. The result was a notable shift
in manufacturing from the developed countries towards the developing countries, but as the latter ones are
building up their product base too, many of them are now also undergoing a rapid transition into knowledge
based industries.

INFRASTRUCTURE CONSOLIDATION FOR INTERCONNECTED SERVICES IN A SMART CITY USIN...csandit
Sustainability, appropriate use of natural resources and providing a better quality of life for citizens has become a prerequisite to change the traditional concept of a smart city. A smart city needs to use latest generation Information Technologies, IT, and hardware to improve services
and data, to offer to create a balanced environment between the ecosystem and inhabitants. This paper analyses the advantages of using a private cloud architecture to share hardware and software resources when it is required. Our case study is Guadalajara, which has seven municipalities and each one monitor’s air quality. Each municipality has a set of servers to process information independently and consists of information systems for the transmission and
storage of data with other municipalities. We analysed the behaviour of the carbon footprint during the years 1999-2013 and we observed a pattern in each season. Thus our proposal
requires municipalities to use a cloud-based solution that allows managing and consolidating infrastructure to minimize maintenance costs and electricity consumption to reduce carbon footprint generated by the city.
Introduction to wrap technology, a very low cost communication technology for...Valerio Aisa
The process of great transformation of the global energy system according to the concept of “smart grid” involves the direct collaboration of household appliances, in particular white goods, which, to this purpose, are becoming "smart" and are able to exchange information with digital power meters through suitable communication infrastructures. But, unfortunately, there still are objective problems relating to connectivity that hinder the rapid spread of these products. Wr@p technology, which Indesit has decided to liberalize through a new family of microcontrollers (RX200 family, 32 bit dedicated to smart appliances) of Renesas (Japan), has the aim to completely solve these problems. After signing a free licence agreement between Indesit Company and Renesas (29 March 2010), Wr@p technology (also known as "power modulation") can be freely used by manufacturers of household appliances without paying any royalties to Indesit.

IoT Challenges: Technological, Business and Social aspectsRoberto Minerva
Internet of Things is promising to be a set of technologies able to have a high impact on how people live, produce, modify and interact with the environment. Such a transformation is driven by increasing technologies capabilities of sensors/actuators, communications, general-purpose hardware, availability of software and programmability of devices. The integration of so different technologies is a problem in itself and IoT is also trying to solve cogent issues of specific problem domains, such as e-health, transportation, manufacturing, and so on. Large IoT systems (e.g., smart cities) stand on their own because the smartness requires integration of different technologies, processes and different administrative domains creating the needs to deal with a complex system. In addition to technological and problem domain specific challenges, there exist further challenges that fall in business, social and regulation realms. They can greatly impact the deployment and the success of IoT deployment. The speech aims at providing a view on some major technologies challenges of IoT and to cover a few critical business and social issues that could hamper the large deployment of IoT systems by providing some examples of implementation.
In this presentation from GTEC 2011, Canada's Government Technology Event, Cisco Canada's CTO Jeff Seifert "connects the dots" on technology trends such as the rapid acceleration of video adoption, consumer devices in the workplace, the impacts of social media, increasing security requirements, data centre and desktop virtualization and smart buildings - and what it all means today and in the future.

CIO Perspectives: Corporações e startups - competidores ou parceiros?Cezar Taurion
CIO Global Summit Rio - Desmitificando big dataCezar Taurion
É a “shared economy”.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Let's dive deeper into the world of ODC! Ricardo Alves (OutSystems) will join us to tell all about the new Data Fabric. After that, Sezen de Bruijn (OutSystems) will get into the details on how to best design a sturdy architecture within ODC.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
