Wish you were there?
Wi-Max Antennas
Giving the Internet to Bookmobile Patrons Higher bandwidth = better experience Wi-Fi inside the bookmobile – cheap and doable Carrier concerns – throttling, data plans, hardware Netbooks great for this application, go with 10” for better usability
Bandwidth = Water Pipes Dialup ISDN older cell technology More Water Trickle for hours Bottom line, higher bandwidth = more data flow! DSL, Cable, 3G Cellular, Satellite Gush for Seconds
Transactions in Realtime! IT department will need to be involved here Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) – easiest out for ILS vendor, slowest connection VPN connection – difficult to set up, must be made secure manually, faster than RDC Native application connection – depends on ILS vendor as to whether or not yours can do it, usually very secure, usually quickest connection Security concerns
Coming Technologies Some are already out there, just not in great numbers in our region Kindle, Sony and other eBook Readers iPhone apps for Kindle format, PDFs, other document formats Netbooks Mobile WiMax Internet service 4G/LTE cell phone service
eBook Readers Amazon Kindle Sony Reader eBook Reader Matrix -- LOTS to choose from!
iPhone Applications List of iPhone apps from MacWorld Magazine
Smart and Dumb Phone Apps Blackberry devices Linux phones Android phones Sony W-series phones On and on and upcoming .....
Netbooks Netbook = small, lightweight laptop with a screen smaller than 12”, and no DVD/CD drive. Great for traveling, classwork Main drawbacks are tiny screens below 10”, no DVD/CD drive, small keyboards As of today, OS choices limited to Windows XP and Linux, Windows 7 available after Oct. 22
Netbook Examples MSI Wind
Example 2 Dell Mini 9 (left), Mini 10 (center), Dell Mini 12 (right)‏
RFID Radio Frequency IDentification will save much time and make your job easier CAN be deployed on bookmobiles with little effort Used with either cell, satellite, or Wi-Max technology to do realtime transactions Cost can be a factor
Summary Bookmobiles are useful as Internet hotspots for rural patrons Connection is fairly easy to accomplish Transactions can be done in realtime You WILL see new technology on the bookmobile, both from IT departments and patrons!
