This document reports on a study that assessed the development of intercultural competence in students who participated in a mentoring program compared to a control group. The study hypothesized that students who participated in the mentoring program, which paired college students with immigrant youth, would develop greater intercultural competence. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 166 Spanish students. The results found no significant differences between the groups in attitudes, skills, or knowledge, but the control group reported higher empathy, flexibility, and adaptability. The authors conclude that qualitative methods may better assess intercultural learning and that quantitative tools need to be improved and used alongside qualitative data.
