This document discusses technological innovations for micro watershed management in South Gonder, Ethiopia. It describes various techniques used including gully rehabilitation through vetiver grass contour hedges and forage bunds. Improved plows and triticale cultivation are also summarized as contributing to water harvesting and providing drought resistant crops. On-farm trials show triticale yields increased with minimal fertilizer inputs compared to traditional varieties. Triticale is widely adopted and utilized in many local foods.

Inter-cropping/relay cropping of vegetables with rice using jute/gunny bag b...aseshghorai
This is a process for utilisation of jute/gunny bags in agricultural field. Using gunny bag based soil columns of different dimensions waterlogged rice field can be diversified with vegetable cultivation in it to increase cropping intensity, net return , water productivity and provide nutritional security to farming community. Jute bags will find its place in non conventional sector. The detailed experiments and large scale demonstrations have been done at ICAR-CRIJAF and some selected districts of from 2011-2021. The dicot crops can be grown in waterlogged rice fields avoiding anoxia using this technic. These soil columns can be developed in saline and rock soils also (having shallow soil depth) for crop cultivation.

Envirolizer Natural Mineral PresentationDennis Cortez
The Ultimate Solution for Plant Growth - Made from 100% Natural Minerals. Envirolizer foliar fertilizer is a natural mineral plant growth enhancer and adaptogen. It contains finely micronized and augmented natural calcite consisting of calcium carbonate, silicon dioxide, and calcite-related minerals such as dolomite [magnesium calcium carbonate; CaMg(CO3)2] and ankerite [CaM(CO3)2; M= Mn, Zn, Fe].
Livestock manure gives producers an invaluable resource for improving grain yields and quality. Managing manure as a fertilizer resource increases its value while reducing the risk of nitrogen (N) loss.
New Instinct™ nitrogen stabilizer serves as an effective tool for integrating livestock manure into a farming operation — by stabilizing N in the soil and enhancing best management practices of manure applications.
Instinct is the latest addition to the N management portfolio from Dow AgroSciences, the leader in nitrogen stabilization for more than 35 years.

No-till farming and the search for sustainability in dryland agricultureIIED
A presentation given by Bill Crabtree to the International Institute for Environment and Development during a seminar on conservation tillage on 28 March, 2014.
Better known as no-till Bill, Crabtree is one of the most fervent promoters of no-till farming, having spent more than 25 years researching and extending these farming practices in his home country, Australia, and the world. He shared his experience on how he has contributed to convert large areas of abandoned degraded land into productive fields, and discussed the technical and institutional factors that supported this transformation.
The seminar was jointly organised by IIED's agroecology team and the Tropical Agricultural Association.
A video interview with Crabtree conducted at the same event can be seen on slide 105, or via http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9zFLNNH_sY.

18. Vetiver Grass
• Highly effective control of soil erosion
• Lower establishment costs than stone bunds
• No maintenance after establishment
• Very drought resistant
• Increased water infiltration (water harvesting effect)
• Repellent effect against rodents
• Tolerant to waterlogging
• No slope restriction
• Multi-purpose utilization
(forage, thatching, bio-insecticide and mulch)

32. History of triticale in Ethiopia Triticale
• First introduction to Ethiopia in 1970.
• Research discontinued due to poor
properties such as shrivelled seeds, etc.
• 7 varieties obtained in 1997 by courtesy of
University of Stellenbosch (South Africa)
• Two varieties released by the National Seed
Release Committee in Jan. 2002:
Var. Sinan: short vegetation period
Var. Maynet: long vegetation period
• More than 25,000 farmers cultivate triticale
countrywide (cropping season 2004)
33. A cereal crop with Triticale
impressive properties
• Cross between wheat and rye
• Seed can be re-used/ re-planted
• High yielding
• High nutritional value
• Wide environmental adaptability (from lowland
to above 3,500 meters)
• Can replace maize and sorghum in „Striga“
affected areas
• High tolerance to drought, frost, and hail
• Low susceptibility to diseases, especially rust
