An Institution is an organisation involved in the
production, distribution, exhibition and/or regulation
of a media text.
Production Company
• A production company deals with developing the script and choosing the director, cast, crew etc. and pitch
the idea to a distribution company to get funding of the project.
• We have chosen Hammer Films because they are a UK based production company who specialise in horror
films. They are a minor studio but have links to Warner Bros. and have produced some of the biggest horror
films of all time such as Frankenstein, The Mummy and Dracula in the 1950s and 1960s which would mean
people may have heard of them thus would be more likely to watch our film. In the 1960s/70s they also had
a lot of psychological thrillers come out which is much like ours thus they have some kind of specialism on it
even if it was mainly 40-50 years ago. It was recently invested in by a Dutch tycoon called John de Mol who
wants to bring back the high level success of the 1950s-70s and make it a major company once again. Since
the takeover films such as The Resident (2011) and The Woman in Black (2012). Daniel Radcliffe starred in
The Woman in Black showing that they would also be get us star actors if we found the need for one as our
protagonist or antagonist.
• We would be working on a low budget thus a independent production studio would be best suited for it
even if it meant the film lacking in technology such as CGI.
• To get the film ideas to them we would send the work Alec did on the story ideas to Hammer Films so that
they could look over our ideas and see if they wanted to amend them and how we could improve if they
didn’t like some of it.
Distribution Company
• Hammer Films was also our distributor. This was because we were
operating off a low budget thus we chose a minor distribution
company so that they can be realistic with our ideas and not make us
go over budget with expensive technology and actors as major
companies would want us to do so the film makes as much money for
them as possible.
Exhibition
• Having taken a survey on how our target audience consume films we decided that
our film should be exhibited on subscription services so that a large amount of
people will be able to view it without having to leave their house or go to a cinema
to specifically see it
• This would mean that our film could be suggested to people to watch having
watched our horror films as happens when you finish watching a film on Netflix.
This would mean that we get exposure due to people’s interests in films like ours.
• As this is a more technological way of exhibiting our product it also fits into our
target audience. This is because they would be more tech savvy than those who
are older and would more likely have things such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
• We would also be able to earn money from the monthly subscriptions payed into
the companies which would mean we would quickly make a gross profit. We would
also be able to gain feedback through the ratings system on these services and on
websites such as IMDB which a lot of film lovers post reviews on.
Regulation
• Having looked at ratings of other similar films we have deiced to
regulate our film as an 15 according to the regulation of the British
Board of Film Classification. This is due to the violence and aggression
in out film, prevalent suggestions of death and eventual suicide of our
main actor which younger audiences would not be able to cope with.
