MAINSTREAM OR INDEPENDENT
To begin with when looking for a distributor we looked both mainstream and
independent companies that have distributed similar films to ours. We also took
into account there location as this could in turn aid us in targeting our film at a
certain audience. For example warp films being an independent company and
paramount pictures being a mainstream one.
WARP FILMS
Warp films is an independent company based in Sheffield England. This would be a
suitable independent company for us to choose as they are based near our filming
location. All actors used are also from this area with relatively strong accents. Warp
films have distributed films like four lions in which some of the scenes were filmed in
Sheffield England, this film did very well and we could take this as an advantage.
Our film could also get away with a relatively low budget, not many expensive props are
needed ect… Warp films would still be suitable as although only being able to offer a
small amount of money it would still be sufficient for our film.
People also know that warp produce films at a relatively low budget and therefore
expectations for editing and special effects would not be as high.
However if warp films was chosen I believe we would have to make our target audience a
lot more specific to the Sheffield area in order to make a higher profit. We could do this
by including local land marks e.g. meadowhall, if we then released to all cinemas in
Sheffield that would attract and entire audience on its own.
PARAMOUNT PICTURES
The main advantage of choosing paramount pictures as a distributor would of course be
the huge budget. This would give a lot of money to spend on camera equipment,
special effects, well known actors and of course better props ect… These would all in
turn increase the number of people wanting to see the film.
This can however be seen by some as a disadvantage some people may argue that you
loose some of the storyline and the original aspects of the film. It may also make it
seem less real to the audience which is one of the main targets in which we set out to
meet. A Hollywood actor is not someone you see every day.
Also with a greater budget comes greater expectations from the now worldwide audience.
Everything would have to be to the best quality and all politically correct. All social
groups would have to be included which could ruin the storyline of the film.
Paramount pictures as well as producing general horror films have also recently released
world war z. This is a zombie film and is therefore very similar to ours they would
therefore have the advantage of knowing what works and what doesn’t in this genre.
