What kind of media
institution might
distribute your media
product and why?
By Kirsty Griffiths
The company we chose to distribute
our thriller film was ‘Warner Bros’ as
this conglomerate has released many
thriller films with themes similar to
ours and have been a successful
since they were founded in 1923.
The multi-million is a part of ‘the big
six’ and has numerous subsidiaries,
including DC Entertainment. The
main reason we chose this company
to be our film distributor due to the
fact that it produced the TV series
‘Pretty Little Liars’ which closely links
our thriller film.
One example of a Warner Bros film is ‘The
Bodyguard’ (Dir. Mick Jackson, 1992) as this
film contains a theme of stalking like our
thriller film. ‘The Bodyguard’ film also has an
acceleration of suspension which is also a
similarity to our thriller film. ‘The Bodyguard’
is about a pop singer who has been receiving
threatening notes, therefore her manager
hires a bodyguard known for his good work.
The bodyguard tightens security more than
they feel is necessary because he’s haunted
by his past. Eventually the bodyguard and the
singer start an affair, and she begins to
believe his precautions are necessary as the
stalker strikes close to home.
On the other hand, if the independent
production company ‘Warp Films’
distributed our film we would have
received a low budget to produce and
distribute our thriller film. This would result
in us not having the use of special effects
which would have reduced the quality of
our thriller film, and also reduced the
realism. Therefore, the main reason we
didn’t pick an independent company like
‘Warp Films’ to distribute our film is
because it would have diminished the
success of our thriller film.
An example of a thriller film distributed by
Warp Films is ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ (Dir. Shane
Meadows, 2004). ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ is
about a disaffected soldier who returns to his
hometown to get even with the thugs who
brutalized his mentally-challenged brother
years ago. This film is similar to our due to
the fact that it has a high increase of
suspension. However, ‘Dead man’s shoes’
has similar themes to our thriller film, such
as violence. Therefore, this shows that Warp
Films are experienced in distributing films
with similar films to ours.
Seen as our film wasn’t really distributed by the multi-million
conglomerate ‘Warner Bros’, we used artificial makeup in place of the
special effects which make our thriller film appear more realistic.
We used artificial make up to
show the audience that one
of our characters had been
stabbed. A tutorial of how we
made the stab wound appear
realistic is also shown on our
blogger.
To conclude, I believe Warner Bros is the most ideal distributer for our
thriller film as the company will provide a medium, or high budget for
the film which will affect our thriller film positively as we can add
special effects and the film would have been filmed in a film studio.
Therefore, the quality of our film would’ve increased and so would the
success of our film.
