2. Intertextuality
◦ The video has a very 80s feel to it and this
evident from the beginning of the video. Within
the first minute of the video it is very clear
where and when the video is set as there is a
calendar as shown … that shows the date to be
October 26th 1987. this is a small detail and does
not become relevant until the end of the video
when the band finds the car from back to the
future. This is relevant to the film as 26th of
October 1987 is when the back to the future film
was set.
However this is not the only film
from the 80s that is referenced
in the music video. The lead
singer is shown to be dressed
almost identically to the
character of John Bender from
the 1985 film the breakfast club.
Another example of intertextuality in
the music video is seen once again at
the beginning of the video. We are
shown a fraction of the Smiths 1985
album The Queen is dead. The video
for Honey Sweet and Stop me if you
think that you’ve heard this one before
are a little similar in that they both
show the band travelling by bikes
around where they live and some of
the places that they visit are strikingly
similar. For example they both cycle
past the lads club as well as …….
3. Technical aspects
There are a lot of different technical aspects used in the video
for honey sweet. There are various different types of shots
used throughout such as tracking shots when the band are
riding their bikes and makes it feel as though they are riding
towards us. This makes the audience feels more included as if
they are there with the band. Slow motion is used for filming
two of the shots when they all throw a log into the water and
when they throw a fire extinguisher through a glass door.
Long shots are used for when they are travelling to the
woods, to the school and eventually to the car.
The band are all dressed I clothes from
the 80s and it is clear from the
beginning of the video when it is
meant to be taking place. The lead
singer is dressed like the character
John Bender from the Breakfast club
whilst the rest of the band are dressed
in sports jackets or jumpers . This is
further supported by the use of props
such as old magazines, albums, phones
and a calendar shown in the opening
sequence.
4. Close up on focus and star
appeal
There is a lot of focus on star
appeal and close ups
throughout the video for Honey
Sweet. The use of close ups
helps the audience to relate to
the band and put a face to the
music. The majority of the video
consists of the band riding
around on their bikes to various
locations. This means there is a
lot of focus on the star appeal
of the band for the duration of
the video.
5. Voyeurism and notions of
looking
Another music video convention that Honey
sweet does not conform to is voyeurism and
notions of looking and there is very little
evidence of it throughout the video. Throughout
the video none of the band look into the camera
directly which is unusual in a music video as
usually they look into the camera straight on as
though directly addressing the audience. The
only evidence of a notion of looking is when they
are looking for the back to the future car and one
of the members lifts up his hand to his eyes as
though searching for something.
6. Relationship between lyrics and
visuals
There are not many links between the
music and lyrics so in this sense the
music video for honey sweet does not
conform to a lot of the conventions of a
typical music video. There is only one
link that is really obvious and that is the
line “autumn pain”. This connects to the
visuals the setting has an incredibly
autumnal.
feel to it and as we already know is set on the 26th October. The relationship between the lyrics and
the visuals are not for the most part related and as result would be described by Goodwin as an
example of disjunction. This means that the visuals do not match the lyrics in any way.
7. Relationship between music and
visualsThe shots are slow when the video begins with lingering shots on albums maps
and magazines that are left out. However when the music starts to play the shots
become quicker and change on the beat. This continues as the band each leave
the house and ride their bikes through the town. By changing the shots on the
beat each time it makes the video far more rhythmic and flows better as a result.
However when the music slows down the shots become longer and are shot in
slow motion.
