3. 1.Til Leaf & Pod Caterpillar
Distribution: Distributed throughout India & also has been
reported from Europe, Africa, Indonesia, & South-East
Africa.
Host: Sesame
Appearance: They are pale yellow, when young, but
gradually become green and develop black dots all over the
body. The full grown larva measures 14-17mm. The moth is
a small insect with a wing span of about 2 cm having dark
brown markings on the wing-tips.

6. Damage:
The caterpillars damage apical shoots and young leaves.
They feed on leaves.
They also bore into shoots, flowers, buds, & pods.
An early attack kills the whole plant, but infestation of the shoots at later
stage hampers further growth & flowering.
One larva can destroy 2-3 young plants.
 Max. Infestation occur in May & again in Sept.-Oct.
Management:
 clean cultivation
Spray the crop twice with 250ml of fenvalerate 20EC, or 375 ml of
deltamethrin2.8EC, at pest appearance in 250lt. of water/ha.

7. 2. Til Hawk-moth:
Distribution: Common in India & is also distributed in Indonesia,
Srilanka & Myanmar.
Host: sesamum, potato, brinjal, lablab & ornamental plants such as
balsam.
Appearance: The adult is large reddish brown, robust thick-set moth
with a wing span of about 10cm. The forewings are decorated with a
mixture of dark brown & grey patterns with dark or black wavy markings
& a prominent yellow spot on each wing. There is prominent deaths head
mark on the thorax. The moths are swift fliers & often make hawk like
darts to a source of light at dusk.
The full grown caterpillar is 5cm in length & 1 cm in width. The horn like
projections on the hind end of the abdomen are conspicuous. The body
of larva is plump & is decorated with a pleasant mixture of soft colours.
