Innovative Learning and Teaching
Student Learning
Learning is a personal experience for every
student.
Instructional Practices
Faculty are master learners who expertly guide
their students through difficult and complex
tasks.
Curriculum Design
Innovative and rigorous curriculum is redesigned
to leverage technology.
Digital Learning Infusion @CDNIS
Our Vision is:
Digital technologies enable
opportunities for greater active
student learning that is valued,
visible, connected and
progressive.

It’s All About Learning!!!
Let’s SAMR
Task:
Get into groups of 4-5,
develop a new or tweak an
existing assessment task in
line with the SAMR model.
Identify a spokesperson in
your group to report your
task.
Let’s “SAMR”
Administrators
Review an existing task:
1. Teacher appraisal
process
2. Parent
communication
process
3. Acceptable user
policy
Let’s “SAMR”
ICT Facilitators
Gr.2 Science - Earth and space
1. demonstrate an understanding of the
structure of the solar system
2. demonstrate an understanding that life on
Earth is dependent on its position in the
solar system
3. demonstrate an understanding of the
relationship between the parts of the solar
system
4. demonstrate an understanding of how
time, tide, seasons are affected by the
location and movement of Earth

“Technology won’t replace teachers,
but…”
“…those who use
technology
effectively will
replace those who
don’t!”
Dr. Ray Clifford, 1983.
Effective Coaching should…
• provide PD opportunities (1
size doesn’t fit all!)
• focus on learning outcome (not
the tool)
• promote collaborative learning,
planning and assessment
(modeller)
• celebrate the success (promote
best practise)
• involve students (class digital
ambassadors)

Editor's Notes

  • #2 15 mins reviewing SAMR and giving some examples. 5 mins about effective coaching. 15 mins for group discussion. 10 mins for them to share their understanding about applying SAMR in practice.

  • #4 Our schools DLI vision statement. It focuses on active student learning.
  • #5 The SAMR Model—Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition—provides a useful guide for infusing technology into the craft of teaching. In recent years, some schools have rushed to embrace technology for its own sake, resulting, at times, in waste and frustration. The SAMR Model, created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura (keynote speaker at 21CLHK), is a framework for guiding and evaluating technology integration.

  • #7 S - You are using technology to replace an older technology exactly like what you are doing before - might be useful or set stages for future development - with no functional change
  • #8 A - You are using technology as a tool to enhance the tasks - using certain functions in the app to make the job more efficient or effective
  • #9 The first two levels are mainly for the enhancement 增值of the tasks. The next two levels of tasks will help students to transform 轉化 new learning. M - You are using technology to modify the tasks - important aspects have been modified so that they can accomplish new goals that they could not accomplish before (add collaboration or add ways to give feedback) - significant student outcome can be seen 學習目標
  • #10 R - You are using technology to create new tasks to replace part or all of old tasks - accomplish educational goals that are never accomplished before - dramatic improvement student outcome - a good example is having students making digital video stories instead of writing - another idea is to mentor for other students for certain criterion for writing
  • #13 Review an existing assessment task or create a brand new task you are willing to try. Record an outline of the task and report.
  • #14 Review an existing assessment task or create a brand new task you are willing to try. Record an outline of the task and report.
  • #15 再深入了解 aug: presentation and google earth, sound waves and calculator, iTunes u, montessori trace letters visual mod: online discussion and polls, digital storytelling, show me, sling note (research) redifine: easy blog jr, sock puppet instead of writing aurasma: student led learning review, chinese learning, book review Photo stream: organize, add caption, parents can add a like twitter:
  • #18 Gr.4 -make a photo presentation (Prezi, Keynote) to show how we can care about our planet (using issues that affect biodiversity in Hong Kong or other places in the world)
  • #20 For modification, just because you have collaboration and communication doesn't make it modification, the task itself has to change from "write an idea on a collaborative tool" to “share a video of you retelling a story to a class in another country"- Global Read Aloud Project
  • #21 http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=CZ7kwMa
  • #22 http://sites.cdnis.edu.hk/students/120187/ For Redefinition, it's about having a personal context that student is passionate about. Establishing the real reason why you're teaching the solar system other than "know the 10 planet."-Students set up their own iFolio to record their learning journey
  • #23 Purpose: Understanding the endangered animals and habitats in the world. Create a public service announcement to promote saving animals
  • #24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X6StIqKGVs Purpose: understanding how media influences us
  • #27 “…those who use technology effectively will replace those who don’t” So now that you’ve got it….what do you do???
  • #28 1.PD models : 1 size doesn’t fit all - after school, drop-in, teacher spare time, online learning, team meeting 2.Respect the teachers’ role: they know the curriculum and students the best, try to understand the learning needs first before making suggestions, remind them to make small steps 2.some teachers you need to model the lesson to them but some just need your advice for their project and these teachers are gold!-they can be mentors for other teachers. 3.Plan regularly with classroom and resource teachers. Be informed and able to reference curriculum across grade level. Support teachers by co-teaching with them, then let them fly. 3.teachers like to come to us for help with an ‘imovie project’, our role is to ask them ‘why and what is your learning purpose? then make advice.’ 3.3 times rule (takes 3 times to become comfortable - risk, refine, mastered), make small steps and aim small 4.promote their success to other team members and principals (use twitter) 5.teachers need to overcome the fact that they don’t know everything and let go of the anxiety. Take risk and let students involve and empower students to take leadership. • #29 Other models that focus on learning transformations, where teachers encourage the innovative use of technology tools for higher-order learning that may not have been possible without the use of technology (for more, see FloridaTechnology Matrix at http://fcit.usf.edu/matrix/)
  • #33 we want to have teachers feel that SAMR isn't a measurement stick, but a map of how student can chose to support their learning. sometimes substitution is good too...like copy book writing on an app.
