- 3. WHAT IS INFLUENZA? • Influenza, commonly called “the flu,” is an illness caused by RNA viruses; the influenza viruses enter the body through the mucus membranes of your nose, eyes, or mouth and infect the respiratory tract of many animals, birds, and humans.
- 6. Influenza CInfluenza BInfluenza A Undergo two kinds of changes: • Antigenic drift. • Antigenic shift. Example for type A is H1N1, and is carried by pigs but quickly spread through humans. Usually causes either a very mild respiratory illness or no symptoms at all. Type B viruses change only by the more gradual process of antigenic drift. They are usually cause much milder symptoms than type A. Their symptoms are much less severe, but occasionally, type B viruses are extremely harmful.
- 7. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS • Fever • Cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Headache • Muscle aches • Extreme fatigue
- 8. MODE OF TRANSMISSION Influenza is spread mainly from person to person by droplet infection or droplet nuclei created by sneezing, coughing or talking. The portal of entry of the virus is the respiratory tract.
- 9. PREVENTION 1. Avoid close contact. 2. Stay home when you are sick. 3. Cover your mouth and nose. 4. Clean your hands. 5. Taking the vaccine annually. • Influenza vaccine by injection: aged 6 months and above by nasal spray: This is given to people between the age of 2 between the age of 2 years to 49 years and is not given to pregnant women, children under two years nor the elderly over 65 years.
- 10. TREATMENT • Get plenty of rest. • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. • Avoid smoking. • Warm showers. • Anti-influenza drugs or antivirals are available by prescription. • Fever can be treated with over-the counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin and others)
