The H1N1 virus was first detected in humans in April 2009 in the United States. It has since spread rapidly across the U.S. and internationally. H1N1 is caused by influenza A viruses and leads to acute respiratory illness with symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. While most cases can recover at home, some may require medical treatment and hospitalization. Antiviral medications and flu vaccines are available to treat and prevent further spread of the virus.
