The recorded music industry in India began in the early 20th century with the establishment of offices of gramophone companies in major cities. While initially only classical music was recorded, the industry took off in the 1930s with the rise of "talkies" and expanded to include folk, devotional, and film music. By the late 20th century, the music industry was worth over Rs. 1000 crores annually, dominated by film soundtracks but also including regional music and the newer genre of Indi-pop made popular by artists in the 1990s and promoted through new television and digital media.
