- 1. History of Music Videos
- 2. 1930 • In the early 1930’s, the first music video series was released. • Spooney Melodies was a series of live action musical shorts produced by Warner Brothers aimed to showcase popular tunes of the day. Each of these were around six minutes long.
- 3. 1960 • In the 1960’s, the purpose of the artist making a music video was to fill in if the band wasn’t available to perform live. • Many of the most popular music videos were by rock bands such as The Animals, The Beatles, The Kinks and The Masters Apprentices.
- 4. 1960/70’s • In 1964, ‘Top of the Pops’ was launched. • This meant that the demand for artists to create their own music videos increased and also became a platform for up and coming artists to showcase their songs by creating interesting and unique music videos, therefore expanding their fanbase.
- 5. 1980 • In the mid 1980’s, MTV started. It’s purpose was to be able to play music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • Having a television channel solely interested in music increased the amount of people watching the videos, and MTV became extremely popular.
- 6. 2000 • In the 21st century, music videos started to break out of stereotypes and explored themes that made them unique, this sometimes caused criticism because of the sexual themes, as seen in Robbie Williams’ video for ‘Rock DJ’ • Technology was developed allowing editing and effects to improve , making the visual effects of the video much more appealing and unique.
- 7. 2005 • In February 2005, Youtube was launched. It enabled people to access their chosen music videos quickly and easily. • This also enabled artists to see how many hits their music video was getting and the comments fans were leaving. This creates a stronger link between artist and consumer.
