with Pre-enrollment and Self-
registration Prep Courses

• 6 campus locations across New
Brunswick (including one corporate
office).
• 4,500 regular, and 10,000+ continuing
education students.
• 750 full-time and 80 part-time
instructors.
• NBCC offers over 90 regular
programs across 18 sectors.
The Challenge
• Many students in struggle with math in
our programs.
• Our math courses are know to have
high failure rates.
• They come unprepared and lack the
prerequisite skills.
The Plan
• Contact incoming students and
encourage them to assess their
current math skill level.
• Offer remedial content and exercises
which they can use to review and
improve.
• Students will gain insight into not only
their current skill, but also on the skills
critical to the success in their
program.
Engineering Building – Saint John, N.B.
The Plan
• Pilot students will be from the
Engineering and Trades programs.
• Brightspace – 99 students assigned
(52 from Eng., 47 from Trades)
• Vretta – 97 students assigned (48
from Eng., 49 from Trades)
The Goal
• Increase retention rates.
• Reduce failure rates.
Pilot Platforms
• Brightspace – Supported in-house, existing, no additional cost.
• Vretta – 3rd party platform, SAS, specifically designed for math
remediation, additional cost.

The Results
• There appears to be a correlation
between students that participate in
the pilot, and an improvement in their
math grades.
• The correlation appears to be strong
in the Engineering programs.
• The resource was seen as a positive
benefit to participants.
• Students in the Brightspace pilot
tended to continue to access the
resources in the pilot.
The Future
• Fully adopt the program using the
Brightspace platform.
• Offer the Math Skills Assessment as a
resource to all NBCC Students
through the Brightspace “Self-
Registration” tool.
• Expand the types of learning
resources offered through the self-
registration tool (e.g. common entry-
skills, core skills, etc.)

Increasing Student Success with Pre-enrollment and Self-registration Prep Courses

  • 2. • 6 campus locations across New Brunswick (including one corporate office). • 4,500 regular, and 10,000+ continuing education students. • 750 full-time and 80 part-time instructors. • NBCC offers over 90 regular programs across 18 sectors.
  • 3. The Challenge • Many students in struggle with math in our programs. • Our math courses are know to have high failure rates. • They come unprepared and lack the prerequisite skills.
  • 4. The Plan • Contact incoming students and encourage them to assess their current math skill level. • Offer remedial content and exercises which they can use to review and improve. • Students will gain insight into not only their current skill, but also on the skills critical to the success in their program.
  • 5. Engineering Building – Saint John, N.B.
  • 6. The Plan • Pilot students will be from the Engineering and Trades programs. • Brightspace – 99 students assigned (52 from Eng., 47 from Trades) • Vretta – 97 students assigned (48 from Eng., 49 from Trades)
  • 7. The Goal • Increase retention rates. • Reduce failure rates.
  • 8. Pilot Platforms • Brightspace – Supported in-house, existing, no additional cost. • Vretta – 3rd party platform, SAS, specifically designed for math remediation, additional cost.

  • 18. The Results • There appears to be a correlation between students that participate in the pilot, and an improvement in their math grades. • The correlation appears to be strong in the Engineering programs. • The resource was seen as a positive benefit to participants. • Students in the Brightspace pilot tended to continue to access the resources in the pilot.
  • 19. The Future • Fully adopt the program using the Brightspace platform. • Offer the Math Skills Assessment as a resource to all NBCC Students through the Brightspace “Self- Registration” tool. • Expand the types of learning resources offered through the self- registration tool (e.g. common entry- skills, core skills, etc.)
