Jacques Louis David Essay
David was the virtual art dictator of France for a generation. Extending beyond painting, his influence
determined the course of fashion, furniture design, and interior decoration and was reflected in the
development of moral philosophy. His art was a sudden and decisive break with tradition, and from
this break modern art is dated.
David studied with Vien, and after winning the Prix de Rome (which had been refused him four times,
causing him to attempt suicide by starvation) he accompanied Vien to Italy in 1775. His pursuit of the
antique, nurtured by his time in Rome, directed the classical revival in French art. He borrowed
classical forms and motifs, predominantly from sculpture, to illustrate a sense of virtue he mistakenly

During the Restoration David spent his last years in Brussels. As a portraitist he was at his most
distinguished, although he belittled this painting genre. Using living, rather than sculptured models, he
allowed his spontaneous sentiment to be revealed. In these last years his portraits, such as Antoine
Mongez and His Wife Angelica (1812; Lille) and Bernard (1820; Louvre) are enormously vital and in
them the seeds of the new romanticism are clearly discernible.
Jacques Louis David was born into a prosperous middle class family in Paris on August 30, 1748. In
1757 his mother left him to be raised by his uncles after his father was killed.
He was never a good student in school in his own words, I was always hiding behind the instructors
chair, drawing for the duration of the class .
When David was 16 he began studying art at the Acad eacute;mie Royale under the rococo painter J.
M. Vien. After many unsuccessful attempts, he finally won the Prix de Rome in 1774, and on the
ensuing trip to Italy he was strongly influenced by classical art and by the classically inspired work of
the 17th century painter Nicolas Poussin. David quickly evolved his own individual neoclassical style,
drawing subject matter from ancient sources and basing form and gesture on Roman sculpture. His
famous Oath of the Horatii was consciously intended as a proclamation of the new neoclassical style

The Effect Of Color On Perceived Sweetness Ratings Essay
Abstract
This study investigated the effect of colour on perceived sweetness ratings. An experimental design
was used with independent variable: liquid sample colour and the dependent variable: perceived
sweetness rating. Participants were 95 undergraduate students taking a 100 level psychology paper.
The study found that light red samples were perceived as sweeter than dark red, and that light green
samples were perceived as sweeter than dark green. These findings suggest that colour does have an
effect on the perception of taste. What is the Effect of Colour on Perceived Sweetness? Previous
psychological research has attempted to understand the effect colour has on perceived sweetness of
varying samples. One such study was conducted by Alley and Alley (1998). They investigated the role
of both colour and physical state on the perception of sweetness. Ten samples were used. Participants
were instructed to swish water between samples. Participants were asked to rate each sample on a
scale of 1 10 (1 being not very sweet at all and 10 being very sweet). The study found that liquids
rated sweeter than solids and that coloured samples were perceived as sweeter than un coloured. There
were no significant differences between colours. These findings support Alley and Alley s (1998)
hypothesis that physical state and colour affects perception of sweetness. Lavin and Lawless s (1998)
study investigated the effect on sweetness judgements when changing the colour of a fruit

Among those who are currently using an eReader, three in ten (29%) say they typically read more than
20 books in an average year, while one in five (21%) say they read between 11 and 20 books and one
quarter (24%) read between 6 and 10 books. So, almost three quarters of eReader users are reading 6
or more books in an average year. Among those who do not use an eReader, the numbers are reversed
as one in five (18%) typically reads no books in an average year, one in five (19%) typically reads
between 1 and 2 books and one in five (21%) typically reads between 3 and 5 books. So, three in five
non eReader users are reading 5 or fewer books on average in a year.
Purchase behavior is similar. Over one third of those who do not use an eReader (36%) say they do
not purchase any books in a typical year while one in five eReader users purchase over 20 (20%) and
between 11 and 20 books (21%) in a typical year.

Compare Candide And Tartuffe
The period, known as the Age of Enlightenment or The Enlightenment Period, began in the late
seventeenth century. It was a time of great turmoil and intellectual movements that ultimately led to
the beginning of the French Revolution. Enlightenment thinkers were the ones who encouraged and
proposed that we rely on and trust our instincts for decision making along with the actions that make.
Many Enlightenment thinkers, such as Moliere and Voltaire, were famous for their works. They were
two writers that used a very particular approach to their works. Tartuffe, by Moliere, and Candide, by
Voltaire, both addressed similar topics and themes such as satire for example. Tartuffe and Candide
satirized religious hypocrisy emphasizing on free thinking and reason.
Jean Baptiste Moliere, who was originally named Jean Baptiste Poquelin, was one of the greatest and
well known comic dramatists. He was known as one of the greatest and famous comic writers mainly
because his works challenged the imprudence of trusting reason for different life events. One of
Moliere s most famous works includes Tartuffe primarily for the amount of controversy it sparked
related to satire. Tartuffe is a play that tells about a man named Orgon, who is a wealthy family man,
who takes a stranger into his home named Tartuffe. He later indeed is discovered to be a religious
hypocrite. He doesn t have any morals or indeed values religion. Tartuffe simply used religion as a
disguise to manipulate people and do his crimes. He pretends to be extremely religious, but from his
actions and behavior, it goes entirely against the morals of religion. For example, when Tartuffe sees
Dorine in Act 3, Scene 2, he tells her:
Cover your bust. The flesh is weak Souls are forever damaged by such sights, When sinful thoughts
begin their evil flights.
From this scene, there is clear evidence showing how Tartuffe is a hypocrite. Here, he preaches about
the importance of chastity; however, in the scene that follows, he goes against this statement when he
tries to pursue Elmire. Tartuffe tries to persuade Elmire to cheat on Orgon, but she comes up with a
plan to expose Tartuffe s true personality to Orgon as well as to show him how Tartuffe was trying

The Definition of Liberty
In New York there is a 250 ton green statue dressed in a robe, holding a torch and tablet with broken
chains at the feet. In 1886, the statue was given to the United States as a gift to symbolize liberty. The
statue is the Statue of Liberty. She is dressed in a robe to symbolize the Roman goddess of freedom,
Libertas. She holds a torch and a tablet to symbolize evoking the law. Many individuals visit the
Statue of Liberty, hoping to understand what liberty means. Liberty has many interpretations and it is
not confined to one meaning. To truly understand the meaning of liberty, an individual must
understand the different types of liberties that are available to Americans. Visiting the Statue of
Liberty will not fully define the concept of what liberty truly means; an individual must understand
the definition, the characteristics, the types, and what liberty is not. First, an individual needs to
understand the definition of liberty. Liberty is derived from the Latin word Liber, which means free.
Liberty means an individual is able to to live in a society that is free of oppressive restrictions on how
to live ones life, behave, or ones political views. An individual commonly expresses liberty as:
freedom, independence, autonomy, emancipation, and liberation. Next an individual must understand
the characteristics of liberty. There are two characteristics of liberty, negative liberties and positive
liberties. Negative liberties are liberties that do not have possess

Drug Abuse Among Teenagers And Young Adults
For several generations now drug abuse among teenagers and young adults has been a major problem
in American society. To address the problem successfully in term of diminishing the amount of illegal
drug use among this age demographic, we must first understand the patterns and trends over time in
terms of what drugs teenagers use, how they obtain them and then use them, and what factors cause or
influence them to engage in such activities. First we should define our terms and limits of discussion.
Drugs here means not only substances that are illegal in themselves like marijuana and cocaine, but
misused prescription medications as well as household substances not meant to be used as drugs such
as glue and nutmeg. Doctors can actually sometimes prescribe drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and
steroids for medical purposes but which are more often used illegally and harmfully. We are not going
to consider alcohol even though perhaps it should be because it is a substance used to later mods and
our mental states just like illegal drugs. Most of can recite the reason drug are bad for teenagers. Drug
use can delay or even permanently damage adolescent brains that are still growing. Drug abuse can
lead to poor life choices such as driving under their influence or engaging in criminal activity or just
impairing teenagers ability to keep up with schoolwork. The reason we care about teenage drug use
from the standpoint of developmental psychology has to do with the impact of drug use

On The Social Order And Absolute Monarchy In The 16th And...
During the 16th and 17th centuries it is clear and evident that the centralization of power, or the
absolutism in and hierarchy, does in fact induce stability in society, however, it is also evident via the
given readings that absolutism also had its flaws which were later proved to be its downfall. It
essentially all boils down a single concept of the people versus government. This is evident in the
history of the French prior and leading up to the Révolution. In addition to, the monarchy of the
English under King James VI and I s rule. As complicated as the nature of government is, when power
or authority is concentrated excessively into a single point, the society will crack by that very same
point if a healthy relationship between citizen and ruler is not established. One cannot expect to bully
and undermine one s citizens without considering the possibility that one day they will rise up against
him or her and religious masks can only be worn for so long before people recognize the hypocrisies
present within them. Both of these truths are evident as seen in the given texts. Specifically, with The
Great Cat Massacre, On The Social Order and Absolute Monarchy, by Jean Domat, and Trew Law of
Free Monarchies, King James VI I. As previously stated absolutism although effective, to an extent,
also possesses its flaws of religious gerrymandering and hypocrisy. Now while these are both
somewhat broad terms, these will be explained through the immersion of both the

Drilling Process Of Natural Gas
Natural gas is useful for multiple purposes. The gas is used everywhere including homes all around
the world, but no one questions where it comes from. Natural gas is found in the Marcellus shale
which is a rock of sediment most prominently located in northeastern America. The sedimentary rock
is thousands of feet down in the earth making it hard to obtain. Mankind was finally able to reach this
rock through a technique called fracking which is simply a kind of drilling. Once a desired location is
found, they begin the drilling process by going straight down. As the drill is proceeding downward,
lubricant and air must be pumped to aide with creating a clear, smooth path. Cement castings are put
into the hole to form the walls of the well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the water goes into the well not only is it mixed with chemicals, but it comes back up with other
particles, too. This wastewater can be radioactive and can be taken back to a sewage treatment that
doesn t even check for radioactivity. The sewage treatment plant should check for radioactivity, but
since some are unregulated, they don t. Some companies even take the wastewater and put it back into
the streams disposing it improperly. Drilling also causes both air and noise pollution. When drilling,
many harmful gases can be released into the air. A study was conducted around a hospital with nearby
heavy drilling and there was a twenty five percent asthma rate in young children. Drilling is around
the clock and it doesn t help that it is very noisy, too. Although the benefits are good, the
inconveniences out way the good because there is an abundance of them and there are possible
harmful long term effects that could arise in the future. There are hundreds of chemicals used to drill
into the Marcellus Shale. Some of these chemicals can be dangerous to the environment such as
hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is harmful because it is toxic to all forms of life. It is carried
through the air infecting it. This acid is a component of acid rain and can decay structures such as
building and bridges. Another chemical is naphthalene which is a surfactant. A surfactant reduces
surface tension. High levels of this

How Intelligent Fixtures Affect The Production Arts
Intelligent lighting fixtures also known as moving or automated fixtures, are multi function lights
designed with the mechanical abilities that allow them to do more than a standard lighting fixture
(Revolvy, 2016). These lighting fixtures have functions of colour, gobo, intensity, focus, prism,
movement of pan and tilt, rotation speed and effects. Thought this essay the impact that intelligent
fixtures have had on the production arts as well as the possibilities of where this technology may be
going in the future will be explored. Intelligent fixtures fall into two categories of what they can be,
this is a moving head and a moving mirror. Out of the two the moving head is seen the most, it is a
main body on a yoke. With this unit the entire head moves around and this always the beam to be
aimed in certain direction. While the mirror unit have a small mirror in front of the leans which causes
the beam to reflect off a mirror that can be aimed in all different types of directions (Leerman, 2013).
In the production arts industry it was actually the music genre with concerts and touring that began
using these lights which in turn was a tipping point towards them being used in the mainstream of the
industry. They were and are still used to create a dynamic experiences at concerts and on tours. The
idea was for the audience to be able to see the colour snaps, effects and them moving around to the
music to add to the entire performance. This is shown through the first

The Election Of The United States Essay
November can be considered as one of the most brutal months of the year. Depends on what year it is,
there is a chance that you will argue with someone at the dinner table when it comes to politics or the
presidential elections. One thing we need to remember is that everything will be okay no matter what.
2016. Some might consider it just to be an average year, but to me, I consider it to be one of the worst
years we ever had, because of the election that was going on. This was the first year I have ever voted
and I am dissatisfied with the results, for the most part. I felt like my vote counted mainly because I
was watching CNN on election night and I keep seeing states like Pennsylvania in which Trump or
Hillary was winning by a few number of votes. What made me go out and vote is kinda silly. Instead
of going out and vote, I voted through the mail a few weeks before election night. When we got the
ballets in the mail, my parents and I gathered around a table and voted together. I voted for Hillary
Clinton mainly because I agree with her politically, plus I wanted to see a women president. I stayed
up to see who won the elections and I have to say, I could not sleep when I found out that Trump won
the election. What was going through my mind was that Trump will become our 45th president of the
United States and we might go to war with a few countries in which I could have been drafted to the
army to defend our country since I am under Selective Services. What s worse,

Texting Shortcuts No Threat For Children s Developing...
Texting shortcuts no threat to children s developing language skills, study finds This article from The
Mercury investigates a study conducted in collaboration with researchers in England and Tasmania.
The study examines the relationship between the use of texting language and language skills in young
students. There has been a general consensus that the overuse of electronic devices must impair the
language ability. However the research found no negative relationship between formal writing skills
and the use of textisms . Furthermore the study suggests that texting can actually have a positive
effect. The article suggests that the reason this study reached conclusions that differ from previous
studies was that this was the first time students were followed up on their formal test results a year
later . Topic 1: Research methods The procedure of the study was comprised of three components.
Firstly, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire in order to collect data about the
participant s texting habits and their demographic information (De Jonge Kemp, 2012). Next
participants were instructed to translate Standard English sentences from two lists into texting
language; one list was typed into their phone and the other was written on paper (De Jonge Kemp,
2012). Finally the participants were instructed to complete a literacy test in order to collect data on
their language, reading and spelling skills (De Jonge Kemp, 2012). A general trend showed that

Applying Malcolm Knowles Andragogy Model to Isd Essay
Applying Malcolm Knowles Andragogy Model to ISD
Abstract The way that an instructional designer defines learning and what is believed about the way
learning occurs plays an important role in situations where the facilitator wants to make a change in
how people do a job or they need to learn something new on the job. This paper focuses on Malcolm
Knowles adult learning assumptions and how to apply them in instructional strategies and techniques
for facilitating learning. It also explores some of the critics concerning his assumptions. Knowles
assumptions concerning adult learning are each addressed and an example provided on how to apply
these assumptions to ISD using technology. The information presented here provides the ... Show

Knowles laid the groundwork that trainers needed to take into consideration before revising,
developing, or presenting any training program targeted at adults.
Knowles begins his assessments by asking several crucial questions about his learners and using a
holistic approach in developing training in chapter 13 ASTD. He begins by addressing the climate and
condition of the environment that he will be teaching in. His goal is to focus on collaboration between
the facilitator, the trainee, and their peers. He wants a comfortable atmosphere with the proper tools
and accommodations that will help his students learn in comfort. His methods are geared towards
building a friendly, fun, and approachable learning atmosphere.
Diagnosing the audience needs can be done in many different ways, such as in Rothwell s learning
assessment. Knowles on the other hand includes his participants in diagnosing their own learning
needs. Knowles proposes that learning is not a need unless the trainee perceives it to be and by
allowing them to participate in the planning of their own learning, he helps them want to learn what
they need to learn. Knowles suggests an emphasis on self diagnostic procedures such as simulation
exercises, assessments; competency based testing, and feedback. Once the learner has diagnosed

Summary OfAmerican Sonnet To My Past And Future Assassin
Societal Reluctance and Reflection
American Sonnet to my Past and Future Assassin by Terrance Hayes is a modern American sonnet
whose focus is a black man struggling to comprehend his place in society. The speaker of the poem
illustrates his dilemma through comparisons to the respected black musicians of the twentieth century
to whom he feels a deep connection to. The tone of the sonnet is one of contemplation, or even
uncertainty, as the speaker outlines his thoughts in reluctance, questioning both himself and his
audience. Befitting of the overall tone, the sonnet commences with uncertainty, plainly illustrated with
the language of the speaker s initial statement: I m not sure how to hold my face when I dance (1), for
he arranges his words to portray a feeling of vacillation. Immediately following this reflective
proclamation, the speaker poses three questions, all of which allude to the contemplative tone apparent
in the text. While these inquiries regard the subject of dance, the speaker also intends for them to be
metaphors for the uncertainty he, as a black man, has for his place in society. His questions are rapid
fire, almost probing the audience for answers that are seemingly nonexistent. As a result of the
rapidity, there is an absence of breaks for these questions to be answered, evincing the speaker s belief
that they, in fact, have no answers. These first four sentences are crucial in the sonnet s development,
as they kindle ruminations for both the speaker and the audience. Promptly thereafter, the narrator
compares his own hesitant nature to the eminent musician Jimi Hendrix, and how, I hear Jimi Hendrix
/Was also unsure in dance despite being beautiful /And especially attuned (5 7). Similar to the
preceding lines, reluctance cloaks the prose like a veil. Note how the line begins with I hear... The
narrator uses this as a prelude to the claim to emanate a feeling of uncertainty. Moreover, in his
dubiety, the speaker appears to treat the comparison as almost frivolous and trivial; ergo, the
connection itself upholds the poem s hesitant tone. Regardless, this remark can also be interpreted as
an analogy for society. Hendrix, despite his unequivocal beauty, had difficulty discerning his

But this isn t the first time the team has tried to prevent fans from enjoying a game. Last year during

Technology Is A Helpful Tool For Teaching The Writing Process
Technology is a helpful tool for teaching the writing process, and Marchisan and Alber (2001)
concluded that writers can be taught to write using the writing process approach paired with tools of
technology, direct instruction, and committed well trained teachers. Graham, (2008), Graham and

advantages: (a) revisions are easily made, (b) publishing is professional looking, (c) typing provides
an easier means for children with fine motor skill challenges to produce text, and (d) word processing

types of miscues. Other tools are speech synthesis (i.e., the writer s spoken words are transcribed to
electronic text) and word prediction programs (i.e., the computer program reduces the key strokes by

mechanics of writing. In addition, outlining and semantic mapping software can aide with the

Essay Social Contract
The Social Contract
Rousseau s principal aim in writing The Social Contract is to determine how freedom may be possible
in civil society, and we might do well to pause briefly and understand what he means by quot;freedom.
quot; In the state of nature we enjoy the physical freedom of having no restraints on our behavior. By
entering into the social contract, we place restraints on our behavior, which make it possible to live in
a community. By giving up our physical freedom, however, we gain the civil freedom of being able to
think rationally. We can put a check on our impulses and desires, and thus learn to think morally. The
term quot;morality quot; only has significance within the confines of civil ... Show more content on

Thus, the group collectively is more important than each individual that makes it up. The sovereign
and the general will are more important than its subjects and their particular wills. Rousseau goes so
far as to speak of the sovereign as a distinct individual that can act of its own accord.
We might react to these arguments with serious reservations, and indeed, Rousseau has been accused
of endorsing totalitarianism. We live in an age where individual rights are considered vitally
important, and it is insulting to think that we are just small parts of a greater whole. Rather than make
freedom possible, it would seem to us that Rousseau s system revokes freedom.
Rousseau would not take these charges lying down, however. Looking at us in the new millennium, he
might suggest that we are not free at all. On the whole, we may lack any kind of personal agency or
initiative. We often have difficulty interacting with one another in any meaningful way, and it could be
argued that our decisions and behavior are largely dictated to us by a consumer culture that
discourages individual thought.
His system, he might claim, only seems unattractive to us because we have totally lost the community
spirit that makes people want to be together. Citizens in his ideal republic are not forced into a
community: they agree to

Dbq For The Giver
Can a perfect society be perfect for everyone? The Giver is a novel that was written by Lois Lowry.
She got the idea from her father who was suffering from memory loss. This made her think, what
would it be like to live in a society where all pain was gone? And thus The Giver came to be. Is The
Giver a utopia or a dystopia? It is a dystopia because of releases, limited choices, and the lack of
knowledge. First of all, let s start by saying that The Giver is a dystopia because of the releases or
deaths that they perform. According to Document D, To his surprise, his father began very carefully to
direct the needle into the top of the new child s forehead, puncturing the place where the fragile skin
pulsed. The newborn squirmed, and wailed faintly. This is the part in the book where Jonas s father
injects the newborn twin with a shot that killed him. They killed the twin just because he was a twin.
That is just so cruel and inhuman. This shows that in The Giver, they kill innocent people like that
newborn twin. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, in Document E, Jonas and the Giver were having a conversation about not being able to
see color. In the end, they both settled the conversation with this, Definitely not safe, Jonas said with
certainty. What if they were allowed to choose their own mate? And chose wrong? This shows that
people in The Giver can t make any choices of their in. This is because it was decided by the
Committee of Elders that people could choose wrong and that would be bad. But, sometimes wrong
choices are needed to make the person learn and become a better person

Analysis Of Theatre Of The Absurd
The Analogy of Theatre of the Absurd Confusing, weird, and nonsense dialogue that exemplifies the
idea of the meaninglessness of life is a simple definition for a complex genre called Theatre of the
Absurd, which emerged after World War II. This genre has no goals or purpose other than to focus on
what people usually do not focus on, for example, secondary characters, slightest decisions that make
big differences, and events that do not have light shed on them much throughout stories. One of the
key elements that make up Theatre of the Absurd is existentialism which means that life is
meaningless and man can choose his own fate in life. Two stories that fall perfectly under this genre of
Theatre of the Absurd are Rhinoceros written by Eugene Ionesco and Rosencrantz Guildenstern Are
Dead, a story written by Tom Stoppard. Theatre of the Absurd is a difficult genre to define; however,
after analyzing both plays based on the established definition and criteria, one can determine that
Rosencrantz Guildenstern Are Dead is a better representation of the genre. Theatre of the Absurd is a
genre consisting of confusing, weird, repetitive, and nonsense dialogue that reflects the idea of the
meaninglessness of life, while bringing up uncomfortable, taboo subjects. The three main criterias that
define this genre are existentialism, repetition, and the dream element. Existentialism is the idea that
when we start our lives we have nothing, and when our lives end we have nothing.

Reflection On Camp Reflection
Camp Reflection This is not my fault Trey screamed as we quickly pulled up alongside one of my
friends canoe. I then jumped into their canoe and flipped them over. Camp is so fun I yelled. This year
at camp we focused a lot on who am I, who are we, and who is he. I grew a lot in my faith this year at
camp. I have a couple younger siblings and they always tell me how they cannot wait for camp. So if
you were to cancel camp they would be very disappointed, Camp was awesome. I am unique in god s
eyes and this is what i m like. I think I am great at managing my time well, also I start a project
quickly. Some surveys that we took said that I am naturalistic (likes nature) and intrapersonal (has a
ton of hobbies and likes to work by himself) I think this fits me well because I like working by myself
in a group because then I don t do all of it plus I have to trust myself to get something done instead of
another person. Another survey we took said I was a auditory learner. I do not think this is true
because I believe that I learn way better when someone is standing next to me explaining how to do
something and letting me try. Also it said that I am a morning person. This is so true because after I
wake up for about 5 minutes I have a lot of energy plus at camp when Mr. Lowe came into our cabin
at night he said that there was polar bearing at 7:15 the next morning and I thought I was definitely
going to do it and I did. So that is why I think I am a morning person. One thing at camp that I noticed
is that I like to be cheered for, because when we did the belly flop contest I stood there on top of the
diving board looking down at the water about to do a double front flip and land with a bellflop. It was
kind of nerve racking knowing you were going to hit the water from a 5 foot fast drop but when
everyone cheered I jumped and it was awesome. Were all different people but when we come together
were a giant family with a ton of different characteristics and emotions. At camp we had a couple of
campfires. At the first campfire a we all shares some struggles we have had in life so far. Then at the
second campfire we all told about how we grew in our faith since then. I really like our cabins because
at night we

Essay on Xfl Case Study
XFL Case Study
In just one season, the XFL turned from idea to failure. While there are many reasons to failure, I
believe the lack of talent and leadership, being a fox in relationship to the hedgehog concept, as well
as positioning, were the main issues. Vince McMahon, the owner of the WWFE and XFL showed very
few level 5 leadership characteristics. He was very loud and attention loving, always taking
responsibility for the success of his company. He showed very little personal humility or professional
will. When creating the XFL, McMahon followed the what first, then who mentality. He created rules,
teams, and a general attitude of the league and broadcasts before having any players, coaches, owners,
or announcers in place. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The XFL s partnership with NBC was a severe positioning mistake. The network s primetime
audience was a steadily aging, urban, well educated group. Viewer s median salary was $60,000 and
no other network had as many viewers with income over $75,000 as NBC. They had strength in
sitcoms and drama, staying away from reality shows. Sporting events included golf, the Olympics, and
Wimbledon all appealing to the middle to upper class. The XFL s brand was the complete opposite of
the network s brand. WWF fans were offensive, degrading young males (12 34), resembling the
cartoon nature of the sport. They were drawn to the sexuality, aggressive commentary, and individual
characters that the XFL was producing. XFL team logos and names were even chosen by 13 16 year
old male focus groups. On the other hand, NFL fans were primarily older (over 35), male, and middle
class. They believed in rules and structure, team play and being able to take sides. Football fans
quickly took offense to the raunchy happenings of the XFL and the boring on field performances.
Rules were changed week after week, showing no consistency. Announcers were unknowledgeable,
angering fans who tuned in to hear professional commentary. There was a reason why Las Vegas was
the only successful team when it came to the XFL. It was sin city, a place where the image of the
league was portrayed. Football fans wanted to see good

The Importance Of Censorship In Literature
According to author Mette Newth, forms of censorship can be traced back to as early as 399 BC when
officials sentenced Socrates to drink poison as a punishment for his corruption of youth and his
acknowledgement of unorthodox divinities. From this point, Newth goes on to note that uncensored
free speech was a challenge for early religious figures. As the leaders watched seemingly dangerous
ideas pour into their once pure world through literature and verbal stories, censorship became more
rigid, and punishment more severe. However, regardless of the efforts put forth, these leaders could
not hold back the changes to come, and the world progressed. Attempts to censor the words put into
the world eventually spread from primarily religious leaders, the government, and even to citizens
with no authority whatsoever. Over time, censorship has increased to some degree in terms of
literature, but the people should not have to tolerate any form of censorship. Regardless of any reason
for it, censorship, specifically book banning, proves itself unnecessary and the decision of what art or
information anybody intakes should remain up to the consumer themselves. When censorship began,
literature suffered all of the initial impact. As printing technology advanced and leaders lost complete
control over what information people omitted into the world, Newth states that the printed book

Charles Crick And James Watson
A potential key to the secret of life was impossible to push out of my mind (Watson 35). Without
Crick and Watson s development on the anatomy of DNA, the foundation for modern day knowledge
on genetics and inheritance would have never existed. Francis Crick and James Watson were two
scientists who discovered and deciphered the structure and different parts of DNA. Subsequently, if
they never conceived the whole idea of a human genome, the entire maintenance of life s code would
remain a mystery. Throughout the race where the men were aiming to be the first ones to unscramble
the DNA code, Crick and Francis encountered and exchanged ideas and hypotheses with other

The men exemplified exploration by looking into the works of Linus Pauling, a scientist who had
released his discoveries of the proteins found in DNA, during the mid 1930s. In addition, the x rays of
DNA photographed by Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin in the early 1950s contributed in the
finalized DNA structure (Cobb). From Francis and James article, Genetical Implications of the
Structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid, it describes how genes can carry specific chromosomes onto later
generations. They supported their hypothesis by including the information gathered from Franklin,
Wilkins, and Pauling. If it weren t for their earlier exploration of other people s ideas, these two men
would never have been able to conduct enough experimentation in order to actually construct a model
of DNA.
Nonetheless, Crick and Watson did not simply go online and search up other s information. These men
had to encounter people and exchange ideas with them. Along that line, conflicts were encountered.
By the end of January of 1953, Watson went to King s college to meet with Wilkins in order to obtain

Most people assume the American dream is about achieving the nostalgic ideal of 1950s family life
Dad in charge of the household, Mom always looking pretty, and their children happily obedient and

many Americans to disparage any lifestyle that departs from this false image of family life. In truth,
the suburbs are full of dysfunctional families and overdeveloped housing tracts. Many people in

Freud And Anxiety
In Freud s opinion anxiety is an unpleasant inner state that people seek to avoid. Anxiety acts as a
signal to the ego that things are not going right. The ego sits at the center of some appealing powerful
forces: reality and society as symbolized by the superego and biology as represented by the Id. When
these make contradictory strains upon the ego, that means if one feel threatened or feel as if it were
about to failure under the weight of it all, it serves as a signal to the ego that its existence, and with it
the survival of the whole organism, is in danger. The ego which is ruled by the id, and deterred by
reality, struggles to overcome its economic duty of bringing about harmony among the forces and
influences working in and upon it. Accordingly they are driven to unconscious. In one understanding
of Freud s opinion about the Roland s case, clearly such impulses on the part of the Roland as a child,
demands using defense mechanisms to protect him from feelings of anxiety or threatened. Such
redirection for Roland at first stage is non conscious repression of those feelings. He represses those

Persuasive Essay On True Education
A true education can be defined as enough knowledge given to a student to be successful after
completing school. The purpose of school is to give students this true education, but as time passes, so
must the old ways of accomplishing this. Reformists have made an effort to adjust the education
system to accompany the changing economy and surpass competition, and in doing so, have lost sight
of a true education. The schools of today s society attempt to prepare students for the future by
providing them with basic academic skills; although these skills are handy for doing well on
standardized tests, they are nearly ineffectual for thriving in daily life.
The first time the education of children became serious was in the Age of Enlightenment. During this
time, the quality of education was based on the economy, thus it was a primitive basis of education.
The current education system still runs on some of these old ideas, but in truth, the validity of these
principles has expired (RSA). However, the education system has developed somewhat, and some
aspects of the information taught to students have advanced. Nevertheless, it is advancing in the
wrong direction. The education students receive prepares them for college; it doesn t prepare them for
any other pathway. When we went to school, we were kept there with a story which is if you worked
hard and did well and got a college degree, you would have a job (RSA). This is a common
misconception presently, because some students choose not to attend college, and they find success
elsewhere. The mentality that one has to go to college to become successful is inapt and was more
accurate in the Age of Enlightenment, when those without an education simply ended up in the
factories and coal mine with insufficient wages.
One effect from the changing view of the ideal education system is the pressure on the schools
themselves. With a rapidly changing world, countries find themselves competing for the upper hand;
this includes having the best educated citizens. Hence, the US tries to cram as much information into
the heads of students as fast as possible. The students have only the slightest understanding of what
they learned before they are pushed on to the next subject.

Formal Elements In Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho
Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock s reputable film Psycho, John Carpenter directed and scored the movie
Halloween, a low budget fictional horror film about an insane asylum patient, Michael Myers, who
escapes and returns to his hometown in Haddonfield, Illinois to murder his little sister Laurie. Filmed
on a scarce budget of $300,000, Halloween has grossed an astounding seventy million dollars since its
release. In the brilliantly directed film, formal elements are effectively displayed to give meaning to
the scene when Laurie enters the upstairs bedroom. The formal elements include Mise en Scene,
cinematography, and sound. The way in which these elements are combined gives extensive meaning

Sound is an effect that is commonly added in the editing stages of filmmaking. It is used to alter the
audience s mood towards what is happening in the scene. Due to the films low budget, the director
John Carpenter composed the musical scores himself. Although quite unusual, it worked out in his
favour and Halloween ended up getting large amounts of publicity due to Carpenter s risky and
inexpensive idea. The use of the non diegetic synthesized piano is common in horror films because it
provokes the audience to feel suspenseful and uncertain to what will happen next. It is used repeatedly
in the film to foreshadow upcoming events, such as when the masked killer is shown on screen.
Furthermore, when the masked killer Michael Myers is about to kill someone the normally tense and
eerie piano keys seem to be much higher pitched, which in a way informs the audience about the
incident before the characters know about it. Although the sound of the piano is an obvious sound
aspect of horror films, perhaps one of the most effective, and less obvious, uses of sound in the film is
silence. Quite often throughout the film we don t hear anything, which builds up the scenes intensity
without the evident sound of music. For example, right after Laurie witnesses the masked killer on her
property, we don t hear anything. The silence of this scene builds up the audience s expectations for

The Care Of Heart Failure Patients Essay
Does the Use of Telemonitoring in the Care of Heart Failure Patients Reduce Hospitalization?
The heart is a vital organ that the body needs in order to survive and according to the Center for
Disease Control (CDC) 5.7 million people in the United States suffer from heart failure (HF) and
about half of heart failure patients die within five years of diagnosis, (CDC, n.d.). Heart failure is the
inability of the heart to pump blood sufficiently in order to meet the body s need. Heart failure is the
main reason for inpatient hospitalization and readmission in adults over 65 years old (Smith, 2013).
Advances in technology continue to change the practice of nursing and healthcare. Telemonitoring is
one major advance in technology that is changing the role and practice of nursing today.
Telemonitoring involves healthcare workers remotely monitoring patient s vital signs daily with the

Educational Experience For Learners Of All Ages
The arts are essential to providing a healthy educational experience for learners of all ages. Though
treated by many as frivolous subjects, they provide vital tools for communication, engagement and
successful instruction. It makes sense to incorporate the arts across the curriculum not only will
schools improve, but students will develop important social and emotional skills, we will save money
in the long run by keeping our students learning and engaged in work, and we will make the world a
more beautiful place. To quote Charles Fowler (1994),
The arts are not pretty bulletin boards. They are not turkeys and bunny rabbits. They are not frivolous
entertainment. The arts are our humanity. They are the languages of civilization through which we
express our fears, our anxieties, our hungers, our struggles, our hopes. They are systems of meaning
that have real utility. This is why schools that provide students with the means and the encouragement
to explore these realms provide a better education. (p.9).
It is time for us to acknowledge as a society that schools are not just a building in which we instruct
students on math, science and reading (though the arts would still be a vital tool even if that were the
case). They are where students develop the skills essential to being human. Simply put, the arts can
only benefit our schools, and should we choose to make them a priority, we will see definitive success.
Using the arts in an academic setting allows teachers to

takes into account the bodhisattva, meaning future Buddha. Those who follow Mahayana believe that
the bodhisattva is encouraged to be interdependent and should not imagine ending their careers until
all beings are enlightened (Esposito, Fasching, Lewis, 2015). Before I went to visit Muddy Water Zen
Temple, I did additional research on the temple by Googling where they were located and if they had a
website. Once I found out that they had a website, I browsed through it to see if I could learn anything
new about their practices that may not be in the books provided in this course. I discovered more

  • 2. Jacques Louis David Essay David was the virtual art dictator of France for a generation. Extending beyond painting, his influence determined the course of fashion, furniture design, and interior decoration and was reflected in the development of moral philosophy. His art was a sudden and decisive break with tradition, and from this break modern art is dated. David studied with Vien, and after winning the Prix de Rome (which had been refused him four times, causing him to attempt suicide by starvation) he accompanied Vien to Italy in 1775. His pursuit of the antique, nurtured by his time in Rome, directed the classical revival in French art. He borrowed classical forms and motifs, predominantly from sculpture, to illustrate a sense of virtue he mistakenly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Restoration David spent his last years in Brussels. As a portraitist he was at his most distinguished, although he belittled this painting genre. Using living, rather than sculptured models, he allowed his spontaneous sentiment to be revealed. In these last years his portraits, such as Antoine Mongez and His Wife Angelica (1812; Lille) and Bernard (1820; Louvre) are enormously vital and in them the seeds of the new romanticism are clearly discernible. Jacques Louis David was born into a prosperous middle class family in Paris on August 30, 1748. In 1757 his mother left him to be raised by his uncles after his father was killed. He was never a good student in school in his own words, I was always hiding behind the instructors chair, drawing for the duration of the class . When David was 16 he began studying art at the Acad eacute;mie Royale under the rococo painter J. M. Vien. After many unsuccessful attempts, he finally won the Prix de Rome in 1774, and on the ensuing trip to Italy he was strongly influenced by classical art and by the classically inspired work of the 17th century painter Nicolas Poussin. David quickly evolved his own individual neoclassical style, drawing subject matter from ancient sources and basing form and gesture on Roman sculpture. His famous Oath of the Horatii was consciously intended as a proclamation of the new neoclassical style in which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effect Of Color On Perceived Sweetness Ratings Essay Abstract This study investigated the effect of colour on perceived sweetness ratings. An experimental design was used with independent variable: liquid sample colour and the dependent variable: perceived sweetness rating. Participants were 95 undergraduate students taking a 100 level psychology paper. The study found that light red samples were perceived as sweeter than dark red, and that light green samples were perceived as sweeter than dark green. These findings suggest that colour does have an effect on the perception of taste. What is the Effect of Colour on Perceived Sweetness? Previous psychological research has attempted to understand the effect colour has on perceived sweetness of varying samples. One such study was conducted by Alley and Alley (1998). They investigated the role of both colour and physical state on the perception of sweetness. Ten samples were used. Participants were instructed to swish water between samples. Participants were asked to rate each sample on a scale of 1 10 (1 being not very sweet at all and 10 being very sweet). The study found that liquids rated sweeter than solids and that coloured samples were perceived as sweeter than un coloured. There were no significant differences between colours. These findings support Alley and Alley s (1998) hypothesis that physical state and colour affects perception of sweetness. • 5. Compare Candide And Tartuffe The period, known as the Age of Enlightenment or The Enlightenment Period, began in the late seventeenth century. It was a time of great turmoil and intellectual movements that ultimately led to the beginning of the French Revolution. Enlightenment thinkers were the ones who encouraged and proposed that we rely on and trust our instincts for decision making along with the actions that make. Many Enlightenment thinkers, such as Moliere and Voltaire, were famous for their works. They were two writers that used a very particular approach to their works. Tartuffe, by Moliere, and Candide, by Voltaire, both addressed similar topics and themes such as satire for example. Tartuffe and Candide satirized religious hypocrisy emphasizing on free thinking and reason. Jean Baptiste Moliere, who was originally named Jean Baptiste Poquelin, was one of the greatest and well known comic dramatists. He was known as one of the greatest and famous comic writers mainly because his works challenged the imprudence of trusting reason for different life events. One of Moliere s most famous works includes Tartuffe primarily for the amount of controversy it sparked related to satire. Tartuffe is a play that tells about a man named Orgon, who is a wealthy family man, who takes a stranger into his home named Tartuffe. He later indeed is discovered to be a religious hypocrite. He doesn t have any morals or indeed values religion. Tartuffe simply used religion as a disguise to manipulate people and do his crimes. He pretends to be extremely religious, but from his actions and behavior, it goes entirely against the morals of religion. For example, when Tartuffe sees Dorine in Act 3, Scene 2, he tells her: Cover your bust. The flesh is weak Souls are forever damaged by such sights, When sinful thoughts begin their evil flights. From this scene, there is clear evidence showing how Tartuffe is a hypocrite. Here, he preaches about the importance of chastity; however, in the scene that follows, he goes against this statement when he tries to pursue Elmire. Tartuffe tries to persuade Elmire to cheat on Orgon, but she comes up with a plan to expose Tartuffe s true personality to Orgon as well as to show him how Tartuffe was trying ... In 1886, the statue was given to the United States as a gift to symbolize liberty. The statue is the Statue of Liberty. She is dressed in a robe to symbolize the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas. She holds a torch and a tablet to symbolize evoking the law. Many individuals visit the Statue of Liberty, hoping to understand what liberty means. Liberty has many interpretations and it is not confined to one meaning. To truly understand the meaning of liberty, an individual must understand the different types of liberties that are available to Americans. Visiting the Statue of Liberty will not fully define the concept of what liberty truly means; an individual must understand the definition, the characteristics, the types, and what liberty is not. First, an individual needs to understand the definition of liberty. Liberty is derived from the Latin word Liber, which means free. Liberty means an individual is able to to live in a society that is free of oppressive restrictions on how to live ones life, behave, or ones political views. An individual commonly expresses liberty as: freedom, independence, autonomy, emancipation, and liberation. Next an individual must understand the characteristics of liberty. • 7. Drug Abuse Among Teenagers And Young Adults For several generations now drug abuse among teenagers and young adults has been a major problem in American society. To address the problem successfully in term of diminishing the amount of illegal drug use among this age demographic, we must first understand the patterns and trends over time in terms of what drugs teenagers use, how they obtain them and then use them, and what factors cause or influence them to engage in such activities. First we should define our terms and limits of discussion. Drugs here means not only substances that are illegal in themselves like marijuana and cocaine, but misused prescription medications as well as household substances not meant to be used as drugs such as glue and nutmeg. Doctors can actually sometimes prescribe drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and steroids for medical purposes but which are more often used illegally and harmfully. We are not going to consider alcohol even though perhaps it should be because it is a substance used to later mods and our mental states just like illegal drugs. Most of can recite the reason drug are bad for teenagers. Drug use can delay or even permanently damage adolescent brains that are still growing. Drug abuse can lead to poor life choices such as driving under their influence or engaging in criminal activity or just impairing teenagers ability to keep up with schoolwork. During the 16th and 17th centuries it is clear and evident that the centralization of power, or the absolutism in and hierarchy, does in fact induce stability in society, however, it is also evident via the given readings that absolutism also had its flaws which were later proved to be its downfall. It essentially all boils down a single concept of the people versus government. This is evident in the history of the French prior and leading up to the Révolution. In addition to, the monarchy of the English under King James VI and I s rule. As complicated as the nature of government is, when power or authority is concentrated excessively into a single point, the society will crack by that very same point if a healthy relationship between citizen and ruler is not established. One cannot expect to bully and undermine one s citizens without considering the possibility that one day they will rise up against him or her and religious masks can only be worn for so long before people recognize the hypocrisies present within them. Both of these truths are evident as seen in the given texts. Specifically, with The Great Cat Massacre, On The Social Order and Absolute Monarchy, by Jean Domat, and Trew Law of Free Monarchies, King James VI I. As previously stated absolutism although effective, to an extent, also possesses its flaws of religious gerrymandering and hypocrisy. Natural gas is found in the Marcellus shale which is a rock of sediment most prominently located in northeastern America. Mankind was finally able to reach this rock through a technique called fracking which is simply a kind of drilling. There has been a general consensus that the overuse of electronic devices must impair the language ability. However the research found no negative relationship between formal writing skills and the use of textisms . Furthermore the study suggests that texting can actually have a positive effect. • 18. Summary OfAmerican Sonnet To My Past And Future Assassin Societal Reluctance and Reflection American Sonnet to my Past and Future Assassin by Terrance Hayes is a modern American sonnet whose focus is a black man struggling to comprehend his place in society. The speaker of the poem illustrates his dilemma through comparisons to the respected black musicians of the twentieth century to whom he feels a deep connection to. The tone of the sonnet is one of contemplation, or even uncertainty, as the speaker outlines his thoughts in reluctance, questioning both himself and his audience. Befitting of the overall tone, the sonnet commences with uncertainty, plainly illustrated with the language of the speaker s initial statement: I m not sure how to hold my face when I dance (1), for he arranges his words to portray a feeling of vacillation. Immediately following this reflective proclamation, the speaker poses three questions, all of which allude to the contemplative tone apparent in the text. While these inquiries regard the subject of dance, the speaker also intends for them to be metaphors for the uncertainty he, as a black man, has for his place in society. His questions are rapid fire, almost probing the audience for answers that are seemingly nonexistent. As a result of the rapidity, there is an absence of breaks for these questions to be answered, evincing the speaker s belief that they, in fact, have no answers. These first four sentences are crucial in the sonnet s development, as they kindle ruminations for both the speaker and the audience. Promptly thereafter, the narrator compares his own hesitant nature to the eminent musician Jimi Hendrix, and how, I hear Jimi Hendrix /Was also unsure in dance despite being beautiful /And especially attuned (5 7). Similar to the preceding lines, reluctance cloaks the prose like a veil. Note how the line begins with I hear... The narrator uses this as a prelude to the claim to emanate a feeling of uncertainty. Moreover, in his dubiety, the speaker appears to treat the comparison as almost frivolous and trivial; ergo, the connection itself upholds the poem s hesitant tone. Regardless, this remark can also be interpreted as an analogy for society. Hendrix, despite his unequivocal beauty, had difficulty discerning his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Technology Is A Helpful Tool For Teaching The Writing Process Technology is a helpful tool for teaching the writing process, and Marchisan and Alber (2001) concluded that writers can be taught to write using the writing process approach paired with tools of technology, direct instruction, and committed well trained teachers. Graham, (2008), Graham and Perin (2007a), and Rogers and Graham, (2008), agreed that technology makes the process of writing easier and often provides very specific types of support. Word processing provides at least four advantages: (a) revisions are easily made, (b) publishing is professional looking, (c) typing provides an easier means for children with fine motor skill challenges to produce text, and (d) word processing programs have software programs, such as spell and stylistic checkers designed to reduce specific types of miscues. Other tools are speech synthesis (i.e., the writer s spoken words are transcribed to electronic text) and word prediction programs (i.e., the computer program reduces the key strokes by predicting the writer s next word). This is helpful for students with difficulties with spelling and the mechanics of writing. In addition, outlining and semantic mapping software can aide with the planning process, and the use of computer networks and the Internet can help to promote communication and collaboration among writers. We might react to these arguments with serious reservations, and indeed, Rousseau has been accused of endorsing totalitarianism. We live in an age where individual rights are considered vitally important, and it is insulting to think that we are just small parts of a greater whole. Rather than make freedom possible, it would seem to us that Rousseau s system revokes freedom. Rousseau would not take these charges lying down, however. It is a dystopia because of releases, limited choices, and the lack of knowledge. First of all, let s start by saying that The Giver is a dystopia because of the releases or deaths that they perform. Analysis Of Theatre Of The Absurd The Analogy of Theatre of the Absurd Confusing, weird, and nonsense dialogue that exemplifies the idea of the meaninglessness of life is a simple definition for a complex genre called Theatre of the Absurd, which emerged after World War II. This genre has no goals or purpose other than to focus on what people usually do not focus on, for example, secondary characters, slightest decisions that make big differences, and events that do not have light shed on them much throughout stories. One of the key elements that make up Theatre of the Absurd is existentialism which means that life is meaningless and man can choose his own fate in life. Two stories that fall perfectly under this genre of Theatre of the Absurd are Rhinoceros written by Eugene Ionesco and Rosencrantz Guildenstern Are Dead, a story written by Tom Stoppard. Theatre of the Absurd is a difficult genre to define; however, after analyzing both plays based on the established definition and criteria, one can determine that Rosencrantz Guildenstern Are Dead is a better representation of the genre. I have a couple younger siblings and they always tell me how they cannot wait for camp. So if you were to cancel camp they would be very disappointed, Camp was awesome. I am unique in god s eyes and this is what i m like. I think I am great at managing my time well, also I start a project quickly. Some surveys that we took said that I am naturalistic (likes nature) and intrapersonal (has a ton of hobbies and likes to work by himself) I think this fits me well because I like working by myself in a group because then I don t do all of it plus I have to trust myself to get something done instead of another person. Another survey we took said I was a auditory learner. I do not think this is true because I believe that I learn way better when someone is standing next to me explaining how to do something and letting me try. Also it said that I am a morning person. This is so true because after I wake up for about 5 minutes I have a lot of energy plus at camp when Mr. Lowe came into our cabin at night he said that there was polar bearing at 7:15 the next morning and I thought I was definitely going to do it and I did. So that is why I think I am a morning person. One thing at camp that I noticed is that I like to be cheered for, because when we did the belly flop contest I stood there on top of the diving board looking down at the water about to do a double front flip and land with a bellflop. It was kind of nerve racking knowing you were going to hit the water from a 5 foot fast drop but when everyone cheered I jumped and it was awesome. Were all different people but when we come together were a giant family with a ton of different characteristics and emotions. At camp we had a couple of campfires. At the first campfire a we all shares some struggles we have had in life so far. Then at the second campfire we all told about how we grew in our faith since then. I really like our cabins because at night we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While there are many reasons to failure, I believe the lack of talent and leadership, being a fox in relationship to the hedgehog concept, as well as positioning, were the main issues. Vince McMahon, the owner of the WWFE and XFL showed very few level 5 leadership characteristics. He was very loud and attention loving, always taking responsibility for the success of his company. He showed very little personal humility or professional will. When creating the XFL, McMahon followed the what first, then who mentality. Sporting events included golf, the Olympics, and Wimbledon all appealing to the middle to upper class. The XFL s brand was the complete opposite of the network s brand. WWF fans were offensive, degrading young males (12 34), resembling the cartoon nature of the sport. They were drawn to the sexuality, aggressive commentary, and individual characters that the XFL was producing. XFL team logos and names were even chosen by 13 16 year old male focus groups. On the other hand, NFL fans were primarily older (over 35), male, and middle class. They believed in rules and structure, team play and being able to take sides. Football fans quickly took offense to the raunchy happenings of the XFL and the boring on field performances. Rules were changed week after week, showing no consistency. Announcers were unknowledgeable, angering fans who tuned in to hear professional commentary. There was a reason why Las Vegas was the only successful team when it came to the XFL. • 27. The Importance Of Censorship In Literature According to author Mette Newth, forms of censorship can be traced back to as early as 399 BC when officials sentenced Socrates to drink poison as a punishment for his corruption of youth and his acknowledgement of unorthodox divinities. From this point, Newth goes on to note that uncensored free speech was a challenge for early religious figures. As the leaders watched seemingly dangerous ideas pour into their once pure world through literature and verbal stories, censorship became more rigid, and punishment more severe. However, regardless of the efforts put forth, these leaders could not hold back the changes to come, and the world progressed. Attempts to censor the words put into the world eventually spread from primarily religious leaders, the government, and even to citizens with no authority whatsoever. Over time, censorship has increased to some degree in terms of literature, but the people should not have to tolerate any form of censorship. Regardless of any reason for it, censorship, specifically book banning, proves itself unnecessary and the decision of what art or information anybody intakes should remain up to the consumer themselves. When censorship began, literature suffered all of the initial impact. As printing technology advanced and leaders lost complete control over what information people omitted into the world, Newth states that the printed book [b]ecame a religious battleground. Without Crick and Watson s development on the anatomy of DNA, the foundation for modern day knowledge on genetics and inheritance would have never existed. Francis Crick and James Watson were two scientists who discovered and deciphered the structure and different parts of DNA. Subsequently, if they never conceived the whole idea of a human genome, the entire maintenance of life s code would remain a mystery. From Francis and James article, Genetical Implications of the Structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid, it describes how genes can carry specific chromosomes onto later generations. They supported their hypothesis by including the information gathered from Franklin, Wilkins, and Pauling. If it weren t for their earlier exploration of other people s ideas, these two men would never have been able to conduct enough experimentation in order to actually construct a model of DNA. Nonetheless, Crick and Watson did not simply go online and search up other s information. These men had to encounter people and exchange ideas with them. Along that line, conflicts were encountered. By the end of January of 1953, Watson went to King s college to meet with Wilkins in order to obtain x rays taken of DNA. In truth, the suburbs are full of dysfunctional families and overdeveloped housing tracts. Many people in America cannot afford to buy a home, and most families do not fit the fifties era ideal. • 31. Freud And Anxiety In Freud s opinion anxiety is an unpleasant inner state that people seek to avoid. Anxiety acts as a signal to the ego that things are not going right. The ego sits at the center of some appealing powerful forces: reality and society as symbolized by the superego and biology as represented by the Id. When these make contradictory strains upon the ego, that means if one feel threatened or feel as if it were about to failure under the weight of it all, it serves as a signal to the ego that its existence, and with it the survival of the whole organism, is in danger. The ego which is ruled by the id, and deterred by reality, struggles to overcome its economic duty of bringing about harmony among the forces and influences working in and upon it. Accordingly they are driven to unconscious. In one understanding of Freud s opinion about the Roland s case, clearly such impulses on the part of the Roland as a child, demands using defense mechanisms to protect him from feelings of anxiety or threatened. • 32. Persuasive Essay On True Education A true education can be defined as enough knowledge given to a student to be successful after completing school. The purpose of school is to give students this true education, but as time passes, so must the old ways of accomplishing this. Reformists have made an effort to adjust the education system to accompany the changing economy and surpass competition, and in doing so, have lost sight of a true education. The schools of today s society attempt to prepare students for the future by providing them with basic academic skills; although these skills are handy for doing well on standardized tests, they are nearly ineffectual for thriving in daily life. The first time the education of children became serious was in the Age of Enlightenment. During this time, the quality of education was based on the economy, thus it was a primitive basis of education. The current education system still runs on some of these old ideas, but in truth, the validity of these principles has expired (RSA). However, the education system has developed somewhat, and some aspects of the information taught to students have advanced. Nevertheless, it is advancing in the wrong direction. The education students receive prepares them for college; it doesn t prepare them for any other pathway. When we went to school, we were kept there with a story which is if you worked hard and did well and got a college degree, you would have a job (RSA). This is a common misconception presently, because some students choose not to attend college, and they find success elsewhere. The mentality that one has to go to college to become successful is inapt and was more accurate in the Age of Enlightenment, when those without an education simply ended up in the factories and coal mine with insufficient wages. One effect from the changing view of the ideal education system is the pressure on the schools themselves. With a rapidly changing world, countries find themselves competing for the upper hand; this includes having the best educated citizens. Hence, the US tries to cram as much information into the heads of students as fast as possible. The students have only the slightest understanding of what they learned before they are pushed on to the next subject. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sound is an effect that is commonly added in the editing stages of filmmaking. It is used to alter the audience s mood towards what is happening in the scene. Due to the films low budget, the director John Carpenter composed the musical scores himself. Although quite unusual, it worked out in his favour and Halloween ended up getting large amounts of publicity due to Carpenter s risky and inexpensive idea. The use of the non diegetic synthesized piano is common in horror films because it provokes the audience to feel suspenseful and uncertain to what will happen next. It is used repeatedly in the film to foreshadow upcoming events, such as when the masked killer is shown on screen. Furthermore, when the masked killer Michael Myers is about to kill someone the normally tense and eerie piano keys seem to be much higher pitched, which in a way informs the audience about the incident before the characters know about it. Although the sound of the piano is an obvious sound aspect of horror films, perhaps one of the most effective, and less obvious, uses of sound in the film is silence. Quite often throughout the film we don t hear anything, which builds up the scenes intensity without the evident sound of music. Though treated by many as frivolous subjects, they provide vital tools for communication, engagement and successful instruction. It makes sense to incorporate the arts across the curriculum not only will schools improve, but students will develop important social and emotional skills, we will save money in the long run by keeping our students learning and engaged in work, and we will make the world a more beautiful place. To quote Charles Fowler (1994), The arts are not pretty bulletin boards. They are not turkeys and bunny rabbits. They are not frivolous entertainment. The arts are our humanity. They are the languages of civilization through which we express our fears, our anxieties, our hungers, our struggles, our hopes. They are systems of meaning that have real utility. This is why schools that provide students with the means and the encouragement to explore these realms provide a better education. (p.9). It is time for us to acknowledge as a society that schools are not just a building in which we instruct students on math, science and reading (though the arts would still be a vital tool even if that were the case). They are where students develop the skills essential to being human. Simply put, the arts can only benefit our schools, and should we choose to make them a priority, we will see definitive success.
