Pneumonia And Pulmonary Infection Of The Human Body
Historically pneumonia has been of the most persistent and deadly diseases known to man. As there
are multiple causative factors, the incidence of respiratory infection has always been high. It has
only been relatively recently with the advent of anatomy and modern diagnostic tests has medicine
sought to understand the pathophysiology and the etiology used to diagnose this often deadly
condition. Diagnosing the what has caused the infection is often the first step as this is what
determines the course of treatment. It is also important to clinicians and practitioners of medicine
that one must understand what an infection of the lungs can do to a human body. Lastly, the
treatments and medications used to bring the patient back to health must be understood and the
clinician should take steps to be familiar for every common type of pneumonia.... Show more

These causes can include bacteria, viruses, fungi parasites, medical conditions and medications.
Pathogens may enter the respiratory tract through inspiration or aspiration of oral secretions.
Certain types of bacteria can also infect the lungs through circulation of blood throughout the body.
The normal pulmonary defense mechanisms of the immune system and mucosal membranes usually
protect against infection. In humans with weakened immune systems, these defenses are either
suppressed or overwhelmed by the invading

An introduction to ticks

The tick is not an insect but is part of the arachnid family.
Ticks are divided into two main families, soft ticks (Argasidae) and hard ticks (Ixodidae). The
scientific name of the tick that I am studying is Ixodes Canisuga, it has a sclerotizeddorsal plate
(scutum), an oval or pair shaped outline, and their mouthparts are visible from the dorsal view.

There are three stages in the development of ticks;
1. Lava
2. Nymph
3. Adult female
[IMAGE]The life cycle takes 3 to six years to complete, with each stage taking at least one year.
Blood feeding occurs once in each stage.
The diagram to the right shows the life cycle of a tick.
Larvae have six legs, climb the vegetation and wait for a passing host, usually a mouse. There they
feed for 2 3 days and they increase their weight 10 20 times. Thy then drop off into the vegetation
and continue to grow.
After several months, the lava molts to an 8 legged nymph of around 2mm.
A few months later the nymph molts again into the final stage of tick development; the adult. The
adult female can only feed successfully on larger animals such as dogs, deer sheep and cows.
When it feeds it can grow to 150 times its original weight. The immature stages of the tick can
paratize almost any warm blooded animal.
[IMAGE]The picture to the left is of a male and female tick mating.
Whilst mating, the female continues to feed, engorging herself so that she can produce well
nourished eggs. The males feed every so often to stay alive. When the female is ready to lay her
eggs, she drops of the host lays her eggs and dies.

Analysis Of The Poem Katherine Mansfield
Introduction: Katherine Mansfield was a well acclaimed author born in 1888. Her literature was in
the form of short stories spanning no more than several passages long. Many dub her as an
innovator in literature for her distinctive use of realism and symbolism which at the time was
foreign to short stories and writing in general. Most authors at the time fabricated fictional worlds
with fantastic characters in their stories but Mansfield was more interested in writing and emerging
her audience into stories about realistic people in everyday environments facing internal
struggle, which gained her much attention. Many of her pieces are also autobiographical as they
subtly reference many moments and mixed emotions that Katherine had... Show more content on

Ms Sheridan and her family are almost unconsciously obsessed by all things pristine and
beautiful, which is where Laura stands outs. She begins to see a new type of world that she was
originally timid of as she was permitted to stay away from people of less fortune. But after she
encounters the workmen preparing the marquee and witnesses there unexpected unintimidating
kindness she instantly turns a new leaf. Appearance also plays a big part in society, if you are
not well received at first glance or dress in a specific way, you will most likely be stereotyped
before you even introduce yourself. Its an arrogant act that is still very present today. A prime
example of this is where Laura complains to her sister Jose about canceling the party due to the
very recent death of a local working man. Joses response, You won t bring a drunken worker back
to life by being sentimental and Laura then furiously replys with Drunk!, who said he was drunk!
.Laura is very empathetic were as Jose is arrogant and blinded by the fantasy .Laura is constantly
battling between her open minded mentality and materialistic upbringing

How Did Religion Affect The Renaissance
The inquisition was introduced after Dominicans and Franciscans became a power in the
church. During this period heretics were burned and their lands were ruined. The turks
conquered the Eastern Empire and its capital in Constantinople. The church in St. Sophia was
made Muslim and the cross on its dome was replaced with the crescent. Changes in form of
worship, doctrine, the church s mission were also made. Lollards were the disciples of Wycliffe.
They helped to spread the word of Wycliffe all over England after his death. They acknowledged
the Bible as the only form of doctrine and denounced the popes and their clergy. As the followers
of Wycliffe grew the opposition of the clergy also grew. The bishops ended up getting a law passed

very different from the Albigenses but however both were considered heretics. Waldenses would
remember large parts of the Old Testament and go around preaching. They only used the Lord s
Prayer and practiced preaching by both men and women. They consider prayers in homes to be
just as effective of those offered in church. I also believe that they were heretics because many of

Cargador De Flores
A man struggles, unable to rise to his feet. A woman toils, unable to support her companion. A
basket of fuchsia torments, unable to consider its damage. A society discriminates, unable to give
its workers equality. In his painting Cargador de Flores, Diego Rivera denounces subjugation by
portraying two commoners struggling to survive. Rivera employs these workers as a representation
of the proletariat class of Mexico, and by utilizing his illustration to depict the working people of
his country, he applies this artwork to exhibit the efforts of the Mexican laborer. Furthermore, the
artist contrasts the blossoms with the workers who bear their weight. The florets radiate with a rich
coral and gold arrangement, and the container weaves with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Never before have I seen such bleak poverty define a community. I see oppression in one man s
eyes, desperation in another s. As I observe these emotions, I feel an anguish more powerful than
anything I ve ever experienced.
I look around the slum for something to distract myself from this sorrow. My eyes settle on an
ornate rug hanging outside a specialty market. It s similar to a tapestry that sits in our dining room.
I move to point out the comparison to my mother, but my voice is locked in my throat by an
appalling scene: a child with bloodied, bruised hands hangs another rug on the rack before returning
to the shop.
Anger boils within my veins. I realize that this child, no older than me, will likely spend the rest
of her life toiling in this neighborhood; she will forever be servile to society s demands. It strikes
me that the shortcomings that compelled Rivera to create Cargador de Flores still exist in our
world; the disregard for the workers in the painting seems to emerge even in modern times.
Disillusioned by this fact, I let my face fall into my hands.
A few minutes later, my mother asks about my silence. Mom, there s so much hardship in this
neighborhood, I

The GatesburgGoGreen Initative is a great idea in my personal opion. Not only will it save
money, it will also save our planet that we are poluting. This is an idea that people should
deffinately take the time to stop and think about before they just decide that it is a terrible idea,
because there are alot of reasons that this proposal will help all of us in the long run. For starts I
believe that composting is a great idea.Instead of raking and bagging up all you leaves and send
them to a land fill you can combine the leaves with coffee grounds, egg shells, and roting fruits
and vegitables to make a fertilizer that can be used for your garden. This saves plastic bags, that are

Dancing Skeltons
Dancing Skeletons In the ethnography, Dancing Skeletons, the author Katherine Dettwyler
describes many reasons for her research in Mali. The main focus of her research was too attack
the problem of malnourished children and to figure out what diseases they were struggling with.
This ethnography detailed Dettwyler s second trip to Mali, and she wanted to relocate many of
the children she had previously measured, as well as add more children to her study. Throughout
the ethnography, Dettwyler makes it very clear that the malnutrition of these children is a major
problem in Mali. She describes many of the children she measures and the picture she paints in one
s mind is horrifying. One of the many diseases she comes across is Kwashiorkor,... Show more

This provided good insight into how these children should be nourished and more facts like that
would have helped the overall effect of the ethnography. The final thing I wish Dettwyler looked
more into was the male/female relationship and how the males felt about the female gender. I do
not know if she didn t address this because she had limited interaction with the males because of
her gender, or whether it was simply of no interest to her. If she could have explained further
why she didn t take much account to this it would have added a more well rounded ethnography.
What roles did the fathers play in the child raising? Were they passive like it appeared or was it
just not discussed? Dettwyler displayed tremendous anthropological skills as well as some not
so good skills. A good thing she did was build a high amount rapport with the Malians. This was
important so they would allow her to measure them, and also so they would trust her when she
taught them how to properly nourish their children. In the text she almost always displays a calm
and intellectual demeanor when she is speaking to parents about their badly diseased or injured
child. She has seen so many things that she is not surprised as too what she will see next and it
helps her keep her composure. One time she didn t

Essay On Binary Options
Since 2007 when trading in binary options were approved as valid financial instrument in the
mainstream financial market, they have gained unsurpassed popularity. Binary options are indeed
high risk transactions where predictions are made on the movement of the price within a
particular specified period. The payoff is either the asset or a huge loss. There are several trade
types of binary optionsbut the boundary binary options are the most preferred.

Measuring Volatility
Novices being introduced in Trading Boundary Binary Options might think they are risk free but
they are not. It is not even that easy as some may have led you to believe. However it cannot be that
gloomy after all. Trading Boundary binary Options revolve around the underlying asset and the
nature of the response generated by any major economic announcement forthcoming.
The importance of the underlying asset to the transaction is crucial and can be understood better by
measuring the volatility arising after an announcement. This volatility is measured by the Average
True Range. The average True Range discovered by the financial maverick J. Welles Wilder is
merely a technical analysis unpredictability pointer for goods or financial commodities. This is
simply the difference between the highest and the lowest bars while putting into consideration the
gaps that lie in between.
High volatility reflects heightened enthusiasm and can be reflected by wider boundaries and
this would be an ideal thing for a trader whose predictions were restrained inside the boundaries.
Low volatility means less trading enthusiasm and is characterized by narrower boundaries. This
would be sad news to any trader who was predicting a break out. Trader wishing to cash in on an In
Boundary Option would be disadvantaged by low volatility. A break out to the contrary would be
an easy ride to the bank as it only

Ode To A Nightingale Essay
Ode to a Nightingale
In Ode to a Nightingale, John Keats, the author and narrator, used descript terminology to express
the deep rooted pain he was suffering during his battle with tuberculosis. This poem has eight
paragraphs or verses of ten lines each and doesn t follow any specific rhyme scheme. In the first
paragraph, Keats gave away the mood of the whole poem with his metaphors for his emotional and
physical sufferings, for example: My heart aches, and drowsy numbness pains
My sense (1 2) Keats then went on to explain to the reader that he was speaking to the light winged
Dryad in the poem.

He expresses that with the phrase:
And with thee fade away into the forest dim (20) Keats explained that he had wanted to wander
off into the forest so no one would ve had to be bothered by him. In paragraph four, Keats had
spoken to the Nightingale and told it to go off and leave him alone because he already had
known that death was coming and didn t want to be reminded of his sad fate. Keats went on to
say: I cannot see what flowers are at my feet, Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs, But, in
embalmed darkness... (41 43) This meant he didn t know what was about to happen, only that he
was going to die. He then illustrated all the creatures and things that would live long past him; The
grass, the thicket, and the fruit tree wild... (45)
In paragraph six, Keats had listened to the Darkling or Nightingale singing and this had reminded
him of how at one time in his life he questioned death and was even infatuated by it because death
was an unknown universe when he composed: ...for many a time I have been half in love with
easeful
Death, Call d him soft names... (51 53) But quickly after he had recalled that memory he stated:
Still wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain To thy high requiem become a sod. (59 60)
Here he was saying how the Darkling sounded beautiful when it sang but that was just a mask for
the fate that it was taking him to; death. Thou was not born for death, immortal Bird! (61) The

Canada Goose Case Analysis Essay
Current situation
Canada Goose has experienced steady organic growth as a niche brand, selling their product
through independently owned stores. By June 2008 it was selling product in 28 different
countries across North America and Europe plus two authorized online retailers. Now it has a
significant opportunity to further cement itself as a market leader by placing its product with a
national chain. Initially, Canada Goose considered offers from two national chain retailers. One
offer came from a Canadian chain called Asmuns Place. Another offer came from Levene s
Menswear. Table 1 provides a high level overview and compares these two offers.
Table 1. Brief offer comparisons.

Firstly, the Canada Goose brand faces a threat from the increased number of fake products by
counterfeiters. Secondly, there is a rising concern from independent stores that national chain stores
would discount Canada Goose products causing their sales to drop. And thirdly, Lisa Freedman
from Asmuns Place made a last minute offer for exclusive distribution of Canada Goose female and
menswear through their store chain. This offer restricts Canada Goose s flexibility in terms of
choosing a distribution partner, but simplifies the distribution process.
Recommendations
Pursue both initial opportunities with the women s closing product line for Asmuns Place and
with the men s product line for Levene s Menswear. This will result in an increase in the market
share in Canada by 10%. It will provide the ability to bring newer products to market, and not
restrict the distribution of products to a single national chain store. Canada Goose should define the
conditions under which Asmuns Place or any other retail chain will feature its products in store
advertisements. It also needs to assure its original distribution partners that they will be able to
maintain their existing brand prestige and pricing throughout all their stores in Canada.
Canada Goose should expand their distribution of its product to Eastern Europe starting with Russia
since it is a country with severe winter conditions. This will assure Canada Goose growth without
the risk of saturating the

A person whose weight is higher than what is considered to be a normal weight adjusted for
height is described as being overweight or having obesity ( Overweight ). In 2013 2014, more
than two in three adults were considered to be overweight or have obesity in America (

as a result, they are gaining more and more weight. Fast food, lack of exercise, watching

Most people know that children need at least sixty minutes of physical activity each day, which
is equal to seven hours every week. Unfortunately, only one in three children are physically
active each day ( Facts and Statistics ). Twenty eight percent of Americans, which is over eighty
million people, aged six and older are not physically active at all ( Facts and Statistics ). On the
other hand, the World Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services recommend that for good health, adults should get the equivalent of two and a half
hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week ( Physical Activity ). Only one in
three adults receive this amount of physical activity each week ( Facts and Statistics ). To many
people s surprise, less than five percent of adults participate in thirty minutes of physical activity
every day ( Facts and Statistics ). These shocking numbers exemplify how physically inactive our
country has become in recent years. Another contributing factor that causes weight gain and
obesity is television watching. Children who have televisions in their bedrooms are more likely to

children s television use were designed and the results were improvements in body mass index

The Importance Of Life In Captivity For Animals
Life in captivity for animals is comparable in some situations to humans living inside of a prison.
The restrictions that are imposed on these animals while in captivity are unbearable living
conditions that affect the animal both mentally and physically. The animals understand that this
is not their home which leads to the breakdown of their psyche. One example of this comes from
a zoo in the United Kingdom. In the year 1979, the Bristol Zoo gained a new animal which
would become one of their biggest attractions. Misha the male polar bear caught the eye of the
public with his unusual and odd behavior. Researchers that studied animal rights in the late
twentieth century linked this behavior to Misha s enclosure at the zoo. Researchers came to the
conclusion that the prison like living conditions that Misha encountered was the cause of his
psychotic appearance. The public had described him as looking like a beast who was breaking
down as a result of the captivity instead of an average polar bear in a zoo. The zoo was able to
view Misha through surveillance during this entire process, similar to humans living in a prison or
an asylum. According to the article by Andrew Flack, Following media attention from animal
rights organizations and the media between 1985 and the early 1990s, Misha s psychotic
appearance in a repeatedly evoked image of the prisons and asylums of the past, where surveillance,
spectacle, and suffering collided to alter the natures of the beasts within

Gender Equality In Nazi Germany
At the turn of the twentieth century, a new representation of the female race was beginning to
emerge in German society. The was primarily a result of the brutal impact of WWI on the
population of men in Germany. They had suffered immense loss of life and nearly drained their
supply of young men because so many had died in the war. Meanwhile, German women had
been forced to fill in the gaps in the labor force. While the men were off in battle, they would do
the jobs that men would normally be doing. Consequently, many women became accustomed to
working, being paid, and excelling in their careers. This gave way for the emergence of
petitioning for other women s rights such as women s suffrage, equal pay, and other
emancipations. Women began challenging fashion norms and breaking the stigma that a
woman s purpose was limited to the family and home. However, as veterans began to return from
war, they began to reclaim their old jobs, women were laid off, and although progress had been
made, there was (and still is) a long way to go in order to achieve true equality. Things began to
slide back to the way they were, and with the enabling of the Third Reich any ideas of gender
equality came crashing down completely. This is not to say that women were viewed as useless or
worthless in Nazi Germany. It was quite the contrary. Women were a crucial part of Hitler s plan
to expand the Aryan race to maximum capacity. Women were exalted and celebrated on all kinds of
propaganda

My Mother, My Hero Essay
My Mother, My Hero In 1859 Henry Ward Beecher said, the mother s heart is the child s
schoolroom. I believe that statement because of experiences I ve had with my own mother. I
have learned more about life from her than from my 15 years of schooling. Over the last 20
years my mother has taught me many valuable lessons just by being a living example of
compassion, thoughtfulness, and generosity. She is an angel that has protected and carried me
throughout life. In the book, One Day My Soul Just Opened Up, Iyanla Vanzant said, a truly
compassionate person is one who can feel what you feel because they are one with you in mind,

Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs
help with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always
putting others before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It
was really important to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to
Ames for every single concert. It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me.
This year I also started singing in the choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about
singing the first Sunday so few days before I was going to sing she gave me a beautiful necklace
with a star pendant on it. I remember her warm hug and her telling me good luck and that I was
her star . It touched me that she took time out of her busy schedule to encourage and support
things that she knew were important to me. She could have just wished me well and enjoyed her
few minutes of spare time, but instead she put me first. The third aspect I admire in my mother
is her generosity. She is always buying things for others. We aren t a rich family by any means,
but she is always giving. Just a few weeks ago my mother s friend was talking about not being
able to afford a new winter coat for her son. That night my mother went out and bought him one.
Then about a month ago my mother heard about a woman who is a recovering drug addict.

Comfort Zone Definition Zones
Someone once said Great things never come from comfort zones. That is basically saying that if
people have a comfort zone they won t fully be able to enjoy the things that make them happy.
With comfort zones it holds people back from becoming the best. The dictionary states that
comfort zones are a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease without stress . Relief ,
soothe , and ease are just some of the synonyms of this phrase. Discomfort , stress , and
unhappiness are some of the antonyms of this word. Comfort zones make one feel happy or safe,
and they tend to go back to that place or state of mind when times get hard. Most people don t
have a very large comfort zonewhich means they are scared to do stuff that scares them, they don
t take risks. All of these people were forced to go out of their comfort zone because they didn t
believe in what was going on, they wanted to make a change, or just simply because they wanted
to be remembered as something more. There are more good things about not having a comfort zone
vs having a comfort zone. The good thingis that people who don t have a comfort zone never are
afraid to do anything they re not comfortable with. The people that have a comfort zone are afraid
to do anything. The first example is Temple Grandin, she was a woman with autism that was
bullied and she had to figure how to get out of her comfort zone. When she did that she wasnt
afraid to do anything. The second example is Malala, she was about

Many people wonder how Parkinson s disease can affect people s lives. First, Parkinson s disease
(PD) is a neurological disorder which is made up of three types of PD that are not so different.
(Medifocus Guide Book on Parkinson s) These types of PD have many symptoms and can be hard
to control in everyday life. This is challenge that physically makes life harder. People with PD do
anything they can to help with their disorder.
To start, there isn t just one type of Parkinson s disease, but actually three. The first type of PD is
Adult Onset Parkinson s. People with this type are usually ages sixty and older. Parkinson can get
worse as a person gets to the seventies and eighties. (Medifocus) This is the most common type of
Parkinson s. It can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People classified under this type are ages twenty and below. There are not many people who can
help those with Juvenile PD because there are very few people with this case. (Juvenile Parkinson
s) Some people try deep brain stimulation (DBS) to help with this type of disease. If doing DBS
works, you can help one of the main symptoms, tremors, and make it almost unnoticeable. With all
types of Parkinson s, there are other symptoms that come with this disease too.
There are many symptoms when it comes to having Parkinson s disease. The first of the types are
motor symptoms. The most common, but major symptom of PD is dyskinesias or tremors.
Tremors is when you have little, uncontrollable movement in you body, such as in your arms, in
your legs, and even in your face. Also medicines such as MAO B inhibitors, COMT inhibitors,
and others can cause dyskinesias to get worse and put you in a not so good position. (Lazarus
Motor)
Another motor symptom that comes with PD is speech. Ninety percent of people with Parkinson
s disease notice change in their speech. (Roberts) Also people with the speech symptom have
quieter voices. Sometimes this symptom can make someone s speech so bad, that they would
have to get a device that helps speak. (Roberts) Some devices are voice amplifiers and devices that

Draft Guidance Paper
Study Details
The study selected by this author centers around ethical and oversight issues concerning standard of
care interventions received by participants in research studies. So as to address recently arisen
concerns regarding key aspects of regulation and oversight of standard of care interventions
executed during trials, the office for human research protections (OHRP) solicited comments from
experts on what has been termed as Draft Guidance (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2015, pp. 1 3).
The report focuses on one particular issue involving the determination and communication of all
the reasonably foreseeable risks that are associated with participating in a trial compared to
receiving standard of care interventions. The OHRP and the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS) produced a document entitled Draft Guidance on Disclosing Reasonably
Foreseeable Risks in Research Evaluating Standards of Care ( Draft Guidance ), so that comments
and expert opinions could be gathered on the subject (IOM, 2015). As a result, an IOM sponsored
workshop was convened to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders about the ethical issues
surrounding study design and informed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, a more in depth analysis suggests that provisions 1, 2, and 3 adhere best to the topic of
protecting the rights of patients participating in clinical research studies. For instance, provision 2

family, group, or community. (ANA, 2015). Furthermore, expectations for the role of the nurse in
promoting, advocating for, and striving to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient are all

Companies in Crisis What to do when it all goes wrong
Odwalla and the E coli outbreak
What happened?
Odwalla (pronounced odewalla ) is the health conscious juice company which began a couple of
decades ago when Greg Steltenpohl, Gerry Percy and Bonnie Bassett began squeezing fresh
oranges on a $200 hand juicer. The company was growing strongly with annual sales rising 30%
per year and approaching $90m. The company had established a strong brand with enormous
customer loyalty.
On October 30, 1996, everything changed. Health officials in Washington state informed the
company that they had discovered a link between several cases of E. coli 0157:H7 and Odwalla
fresh apple juice.
The link ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The company s values spoke of nourishing people and when the crisis came it was an adherence to
honest, straight talking and accepting responsibility that helped to get the company through.
There are critics who refuse to credit the company with any integrity whatsoever but even these will
concede that as an exercise in crisis management, Odwalla stands as an example of best practice
that few can match.
The year after the crisis, Odwalla was voted Best Brand Name in the Bay Area by San Francisco
Magazine. This was the first indication amongst many that Odwalla s reputation had survived. http:/
/www.kidsource.com/kidsource/content2/ecoli/odwalla.11.23.html To Odwalla, the recent
incidents of E. coli O157:H7 are a call to action for the entire fresh apple juice industry. Adherence
to industry standards for good manufacturing practices is no longer enough to assure that E. coli
O157:H7 is not present in fresh apple juice. Previously accepted practices for preventing E. coli
O157:H7 contamination, such as thoroughly washing apples, cannot assure safety, said Stephen
Williamson, CEO of Odwalla. Further, according to Dr. Michael Doyle, microbiologist from the
University of Georgia, Testing of finished product does not guarantee the absence of harmful
pathogens such as E. coli O157:H7.
Finally, among other methods, the company is considering some form of heat treatment to kill
bacteria while maintaining integrity and optimal

Amy Tan Mother Tongue Summary
Mother Tongue describes Amy Tan s experience with languages throughout her life. Tan
discusses the difficulties of her mother s broken English (419) and its part in her life. She starts
with how she notices that she speaks two different types of English. In public, Tan uses her
proper, complicated grammar; when she is with her family, such as her mother and husband, she
uses broken English (419). Over the years, Tan notices the predicaments that arose due to her
mother s English skills and at first believed it will permanently affect her. Over time, Tan realizes
that her mother s English made her into the person she is today. In Mother Tongue Amy Tan

The English that Tan s mother spoke made her into the person she is today: It s my mother
tongue. Her language, as I hear it is vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery. That was the
language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world
(419). Not only does Tan use broken English (419) with her mother, she also uses this type of
English with her husband: It s because over the twenty years we ve been together I ve often
used that same kind of English with him, and sometimes he even uses it with me. It has become
our language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to family talk, the language I
grew up with (418). The relationship between Tan and her husband demonstrates how her mother
s English has an influential effect on her personal identity. The broken English was a part of Tan
when she was compassionate about her loved ones. She speaks that type of English when she is
with someone who is significant in her life. Tan kept her mother s English in mind when Tan was
working on her fiction novel The Joy Luck Club: I wanted to capture what language ability tests
can never reveal: her intent, her passion, her imagery, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of
her thoughts (423). Broken English (419) changed the way Tan first perceived the language and
makes it a big part of her own literature. Tan

the Two Front War When Germany declared war on Russia in 1914, they also had their own
military plan, which called for a two front war with France and Russia. It was called The
Schlieffen Plan and was developed by General Alfred von Schlieffen in 1903 but was revised in
December of 1905. At this time, he was chief of the German General Staff, and Europe was
separated into the Triple Alliance, which consisted of Germany, Austria, and Italy, on one side and

It was supposed to be implemented by 1916, when Schlieffen felt that Germany would be strong

the Plan, in 1914, a Serbian nationalist killed the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. It is
believed that the tension between Serbia and Austria Hungary goes back to the annexation of
Bosnia and Herzegovina by Austria Hungary. Serbia was infuriated because it ruined their hope
of Slavic unity and freedom by using Bosnia to establish a large Serbian Kingdom. Because of
the archduke s assassination and the fact that Serbia rejected some of the ultimatums given by
Austria Hungary in order to preserve its sovereignty, Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia.
After the takeover of Bosnia and Herzegovina by Austria Hungary, Russia and Austria Hungary s

another crisis. Therefore, since Russia was determined to fully support Serbia, Czar Nicholas II
ordered partial mobilization, the process of assembling troops and supplies and making them

The Fundamental And Structural Principles Of The...
A constitution refers to a set of rules and guidelines intended to create both the fundamental and
structural principles of the government in a state or nation. A constitution is either written or
unwritten. On one hand, a written constitution is a formal document that defines the attributes or
characteristics of the constitutional settlement, the rules governing the political system and the
roles and responsibilities of the government and rights of citizens and inhabitants in a codified form
(Shamgar 345). On the other hand, an unwritten or uncodified constitutionrefers to a form of the
constitution where the essential rules of any nation s government are in the form of customs,
precedent, usage, and a range of statutes and legal instruments. Only three countries in the world
have an unwritten constitution. They include the United Kingdom, Israel, and New Zealand.
Ordinarily, a constitution is written following major political revolutions or reforms. For instance,
the United Statesof America wrote their constitution in 1787 following the Second World War.
Germany and Japan also wrote theirs at that time.
Written Constitution versus Unwritten Constitution
Traditionally, there were two main reasons why constitutions were essential. First, it offered an
explanation on the structure of the government and its roles and responsibilities. Second,
governments and citizens viewed a constitution as the pillar of liberal democracy. However,
Heywood (2007) argues that the two

Essay On Communities In Contact
Communities in Contact:
How Conflicting Ideals Can Shape a Community
If we do not have contact with others, would defining who we are even be necessary? The answer
is no. If there were no other groups in which we communicated with, we would not need to separate
ourselves. It is through interactions with other groups that we decide what will distinguish us as a
people. This can mean the absorption of another s ideals or the complete rejection of them. Either
way, the contact is necessary for defining every community. Contact with other communities, be it
trade such as clothing between the Ottoman and English empire or spices from India to Rome or
political alliances such as Ghana and Mali, is a pivotal part of determining who a community ...

They began equating spices with luxury and eventually magic. However, unlike modern times,
these two concepts were linked to a negative connotation. In her piece detailing the spice trade,
Pollard even goes so far as to call it the offense of magic . This association suggests the Romans
did not strive for excess or luxury and instead valued a hardworking, practical life (though their
definition of such a life was most assuredly different than current ideas). Beyond just establishing
societal values, this open trade allowed for a growth in the economy and in literature. Many
authors went to write stories based on these spices. They wrote of witches and mages that used
these herbs to cast dreadful spells. Art is a physical expression of a culture and literature is
considered under the category of art. These works that defined the culture would not have been

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Pedicle Screw Anchorage
The use of pedicle screw instrumentation in the spine has evolved over the last two decades. The
preliminary use of pedicle screws began in the lumbar spine. As surgeons became more comfortable
with the complex anatomy required for accurate screw placement, the use of pedicle
instrumentation has evolved to include their use in the thoracolumbar and thoracic spine. The
impetus behind their increased use is a result of the many advantages that pedicle screw anchorage
offers over traditional hook and rod constructs. Improved deformity correction and overall construct
rigidity are two important advantages of pedicle screw instrumentation due its 3 column control
over the spinal elements. First, pedicle screw instrumentation precludes the need to place
instrumentation within the spinal canal with its inherent risk of neurologic injury. Second, the

use the knowledge of the musical elements to explore how Brumby has created each of the
characters in Festival Overture on Australian Themes and how all of the themes in the piece have

The intro of the piece Festival Overture on Australian Themes is uncertain in tonality, starting with
a flourish of notes for six bars, using woodwinds and strings, over bass tritones that go lower,
coming to a rest on B, the dominant of E.
The first subject; theme A, is a song called Jim Jones . It is written in E minor. The piece has a

This cheerful theme is played on violins. The Bullroarer is added here. The theme is then repeated,
after that there is a sudden change into using a full orchestra. Accents and sequences create an
unsettled mood and pushes the music forward. It then builds up in tension until the sound
overflows and comes to a stop at the chord of B. A short solo on bassoon re establishes the calm
and undisturbed character, needed for the return of the song Jim Jones. The piece Van Diemen s
Land is about Tasmania, formally named Van Diemen s Land, were all the convicts were sent to
pay for the crimes that they committed. The song talks about the hardships that the wild and
wicked youths will go through on Van Diemen s Land. The vigorous character of the theme
represents the power of the prison guards that hold the convicts there.
From Bars 142 175 the first subject; the song Jim Jones is repeated, played in E minor. From
bars 176 184, the transition between Jim Jones and The Lime Juice Tub is repeated, although it

Reaction Of Walter Benjamin And The Film Shadow Magic
Reaction Response to Walter Benjamin and the film Shadow Magic
One might generalize by saying: the technique of reproduction detaches the reproduced object from
the domain of tradition. By making many reproductions it substitutes a plurality of copies for a
unique existence. And in permitting the reproduction to meet the beholder or listener in his own
particular situation, it reactivates the object reproduced.
Walter Benjamin, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (1936)
Benjamin is saying that reproductions reduce the integrity of the art because the product is no
longer authentic. Benjamin also speaks of aura a symptomatic process whose significance
points beyond the realm of art. (1936). according to him this is missing in works that have been
reproduced or produced indirectly, i.e. a copy of a painting or a photograph. I think that the
value of art is in the art itself and the use of it to express one s inner goals and desires. Benjamin
also speaks of the shattering of tradition that he believes is caused by the loss of authenticity of
art in its original form. I believe that while there would have been a certain intimacy between the
artist and the subject in the past. That does not exist today due to technology. We now can take
thousands of photos a day, whereas 150 years ago a person may have sat for a portrait for a few
hours. Reproductions while devaluing both the integrity and price of a piece of art, is a necessary

DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUES
Data collection techniques Data collection is a very essential aspect in all research studies.
Normally, inaccurate data collection methods tend to have a very big impact to the results of the
study and this eventually leads to invalid results. The data collection techniques in many cases vary
along a continuum, for instance at one end of the continuum are the quantitative methods and
techniques while of the other side are the qualitative techniques for data collection (Kuada, 2012).
In both qualitative and quantitative techniques, there are there are various methods used for data
collection. In qualitative research for instance, the various data collection techniques used include
interviews, observations, and focus group discussions among other techniques. In this case,
however, the most appropriate techniques especially in the qualitative research are focus group
discussions and interviews on the other hand.
Interviews
Focusing on interviews as a qualitative method, it comprises of structured, semi structured as well
as unstructured interviews. The structured interviews are largely verbally administered
questionnaires. Usually predetermined questions are asked, the questions have no variation, and

Comparing Svidrigailov s Dream In Crime And Punishment
In the novel Crime and Punishment, there are various dreams that are prominent to the story and

several dreams. Dostoevsky uses Svidrigailov s dream as a representation of his subconscious
desires, both pure and impure; this includes his dreams in order to further characterization of
Svidrigailov that could not occur through plot events or dialogue.
The first of Svidrigailov s dreams begins with a mouse running all over his body. The dream was so

Svidrigailov knew that girl; there was no holy image; no burning candle beside the coffin; no sound
of prayers: the girl had drowned herself. She was only fourteen, but her heart was broken (502).
Svidrigailov has this dream because the girl he raped had killed herself because of his actions. Yet,
Svidrigailov surprises the reader: But her loose fair hair was wet; there was a wreath of roses on
her head. The stern and already rigid profile of her face looked as though chiselled of marble
too, and the smile on her pale lips was full of an immense unchildish misery and sorrowful appeal
(502). This could be a depiction of Svidrigailov s guilt of raping the young girl. From being
familiar with Svidrigailov s character, the reader would not expect him to feel guilty of his action.
The final significant dream concludes when he is walking through a corridor and finds a young girl.
He bent down with the candle and saw a little girl, not more than five years old, shivering and
crying, with her clothes as wet as a soaking house flannel...he took her in his arms, went back to
his room, sat her on the bed, and began undressing her...when he had undressed her, he put her on
the bed, covered her up and wrapped her in the blanket from her head downwards.

The Bombing Of Pearl Harbor
It all started the morning of December 7, 1941 when Japanese leaders decided to bomb the

bombing had a great impact on the whole world for World War II. The bombing of Pearl Harbor
had many situations before the bombing, during the bombing, and after the bombing. The
bombing of Pearl Before was a bombing that the country of Japan had declared on the United

Governor of Premier, Hideji Tojo, that the Roosevelt administration would not abandon the
regions of South East Asia and China to the Japanese military or continue to supply Tokyo with
oil and other valuable resources that they would need in the war. The Emperor of Japan, Emperor
Hirohito, wanted to enlarge the territory and power of Japan. Japan wanted the natural resources of
oil and aluminum that are found in the Netherlands East Indies, but in order to gain these resources
they had to get through the United States first (Quiroz 2). In July of 1939, President Roosevelt

Nigeria Cement Company, Nkalagu; Nigerian Railway Corporation, and Nigerian Port Authority.
All these corporations were managed by Boards. Since then more corporations have been
established based on national interest. Some state governments have also established public
corporations to actualise their developmental interests.
The term public service can be conceptualized in two ways. First it refers to the body of officials
that are involved in the administration of the agencies, services, programmes and policies of the
public sector. That is, the public servants that manage the entirety of public services. In the second
sense, the concept refers to the organizations, agencies, structures, departments and units which are
charged with and involved in public or governmental tasks, activities and functions. These include
the Civil Service, Commissions, Boards, Directorates, Parastatals, etc that are publicly owned,
funded and directed (Ikelegbe, 1995). The public service as established by

Argumentative Essay On Phobias
Taking into consideration that all people are unique, we all have different phobias. A phobia is an
extreme or irrational fear of something. Many phobias are in relation to one another. For instance
the phobias agoraphobia, anthropophobia, and stenophobia. These three are related by the reason of
they can correspond with social situations. Agoraphobia is mainly the fearof crowds. It can also be
the fear of bridges or being outside. Anthropophobia is the fear of people and society. It is also
known as an extreme pathological form of shyness. The last phobia, stenophobia, is very rare. It is
the fear of narrow things or places. All phobias are important to understand. Being able to
understand a phobia means a person could help to possibly cure... Show more content on

A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear of something. Many phobias are in relation to one another.
As people, we must realize that phobias cannot be fixed by ourselves. In order to help individuals
that we may encounter, we must completely understand phobias. We cannot judge them for
something they cannot help. To help an individual feel more at ease it is our job to know the
causes, effects, impacts, and treatments of their phobia. This would help to completely understand
the phobia and in the end, help us all to support each

Progressive Prank Protection Commercial Examples
The two ads I chose were the Nationwide Baby commercial and the Progressive prank protection
commercial. I chose these ads because they show a practical product, that most people use, in an
funny and unrelated way. The nationwide ad shows a man taking care of a baby as if it is a car.
This commercial is used to promote car insurance. The progressive ad shows agents Flo and Jamie
sneaking around in the night pulling off their own version of pranks: fixing mailboxes, replacing
windows, and leaving paper bags with money on doorsteps. This commercial is used to promote
home insurance. Nationwide and Progressive are two well known insurance companies.
The first ad I will talk about is the Nationwide Baby ad. The ad starts off with a man washing his
baby in his driveway the same way one would wash a car (Nationwide). The ad goes on to show
car related situations with a baby like running into a fire hydrant, car repair shop, and in a
grocery store parking lot. The ad shows how Nationwide will protect what s precious to you by
making it precious to them. Therefore, just like a baby is precious and people will do anything to
protect their baby, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People who own cars would likely watch this ad because they may want to change insurance
companies or to confirm their decision in getting Nationwide. People who may be thinking
about changing their insurance may watch this ad and see a company that really value other
peoples possessions and work with them. This concept can be very persuasive in attracting
people who are looking for a new insurance company. Therefore, if a person is looking for an
insurance company that has good service and truly cares, then the Nationwide Baby ad would be
a good start of them choosing a new insurance company. For people who already are Nationwide
customers can be assured that they are a part of a caring company

Imagery In Street Of Crocodiles
The book Street of Crocodiles is a series of short stories depicting the life of a small family and the
town they live in. These short stories are in no chronological order, but develop intense imagery
throughout the entire novel. One of the most prominent characters of the book is the Father, who
seems to be crazy. The father goes on a rollercoaster of emotions and ideas into an uncontrollable
descent into insanity throughout the stories, altering the ways in which reality seems to be. In a
couple of these chapters the author, Bruno Schulz, develops the character of the father through
imagery that helps show how his reality is shifted between something humanand something a little
more animalistic.
In the chapter Birds, the father is beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the beginning of the chapter, the father is no longer with the family because he had
apparently died. The only thing left of the father is a stuffed bird from his previous craze which
happened to be the condor. Its coat of feathers was in many places moth eaten...its eyes had
fallen out and sawdust scattered from the washed out tear stained sockets (73, Schulz). This
description of the dead bird relates to the late father because in many ways the father was
battered and somewhat lifeless at times. However other times he was vibrant and full of ideas
which the condor also represented by its powerful beak and the bald neck that gave its senile
head a solemnly hieratic air (73, Schulz). Before the father s disappearance, the house the family
lives in became infested with cockroaches. To try and kill the little creatures he would leap from
one chair to another with a javelin (75, Schulz) in his hands stabbing at the ground while emitting
screams of terror (75, Schulz). In a sense he had grown wild (75, Schulz) attempting to rid the
house of the invasion. His hatred for the cockroaches created a permeant petrified tragic mask (75,
Schulz) on his face and the constant anticipation of a cockroach running by made the father go
perpetually insane. He could no longer resist the intense loathing for the cockroaches causing him
to fall prey to madness and become completely subjected to it (75, Schulz). This shows how the
fathers reality has been completely altered to the point of insanity, he can no longer go about
normal human activities because of his uncontrollable need to kill the cockroaches. Still he fought
to obtain the reality he is losing ever so quickly, but eventually he lost the sense of who he is and
control over his own body. Finally, one night he lay on the floor naked, stained with black totem
spots, the lines of his ribs

How Did Bob Marley Influence American Culture
Bob Marley and his reggae style music have not only reined supreme throughout Jamaica but
also throughout the entire world. Marley s music, style, philosophy and Rasta pride have,
overtime, become a culture itself. Through his Reggae style music he advocated love, peace,
hope, and unity and sought to promote equality among people in Jamaica and around the world.
Primarily, his music was based off of life and love and eventually the messages in his music
began to shift to correspond with the political violence occurring in Jamaica at the time. From the
beginning of his career to the end, his music was heavily influenced by the Rastafarian religion. He
used his religious values as the basis of his works and his motivation to strive to unite... Show more

Through methodology of close readings of Marley s musical lyrics and analysis of his life, this
study will focus on the different ways Marley s religious values, political stance, and musical
style influenced unity among the two conflicting political parties in Jamaica at the time, the
Jamaican Labor Party (JLP) and the People s National Party (PNP). Also, specifically, the
influence that his upbringing and his religion had on the formulation of his music and the
influence that it had on the world. Robert Bob Marley was born in St. Ann, Jamaica on February
6, 1945. Marley was the product of a white father and a black mother. In the famous documentary
Marley by Kevin Macdonald, Marley acclaims, My father was white and my mother was black,
they called me half caste1 or whatever (Marley 8:00). During this era, the unification among
blacks and whites was extremely looked down upon, and Marley greatly suffered rejection from
this characteristic. He also suffered from growing up without a father, which led him to live a life
in poverty and rejection from superior races (Gilroy 231). Living in the Trench Town2 of Jamaica,
Marley was exposed to Reggae, and through

Beauty Pageants Objectify Women
Many people (most of which are women believe that) beauty pageants objectify women . The
definition of objectify is: to present as an object. What s really happening is more similar to
glorification. The definition of glorification is: to make something or someone appear better than it
actually is. Beauty pageants do not objectify women because the contestants are not judged solely
on physical appearance, the contestants are being glorified not objectified and all contestants pass
a screening to make sure they fulfill all criteria beforehand. One of the most common reasons that
make beauty pageants objectifying is that the contestants are judged solely on their physical
appearance. While that may have been true a few years ago now... Show more content on

Many people believe that beauty pageants are objectifying since they often give young people
the wrong definition of beauty, however it is just showing them a glorified version.
Glorification is still a problem not it is not as bad as objectification. However some people like
to glorify themselves either in real life, or by using photoshop and other online editors to glorify
themselves digitally. Many people believe thats it is objectifying for each contestant to undergo
a screening before they enter to make sure that they fulfil all criteria beforehand, However this is
to make sure that it is fair for all contestants. It is also to make they all meet the standards for the
pageant. This is not objectification because it is mandatory for all contestants and if they
contestants refuse to do the screening they will not be able to participate. Hopefully after
reading this text one will know that beauty pageants do not objectify women. What people
believe to be objectification is more likely to be a case of glorification. Glorification is still a
problem though it is not as bad as objectification. Steps should still be taken to try and stop doing
it. Beauty pageants may have lots of problems but objectification is not one of

A Midsummer Night s Dream Essay
A Midsummer NIght s Dream A Midsummer Night s Dream is a classical play written by
William Shakespeare. It is one of his more eccentric piece of work. The play is about the
struggle of love between four essential characters: Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius , and Helena.
However, it is not quite that simple. The play is quite confusing. In Midsummer Night s dream
the play take place in two realms fairy realm and human realm, two of the three main settings.
Another one of the settings take place inside the cottage of a carpenter Peter Quince. At one point
during the play the realms converge Making it difficult for the audience to distinguish the
difference between reality and illusion within the play. This is one of the many reasons the play
is interesting or appealing. Also to add on, the symbolism of the tile and moon, and comedic
elements within the play serves engage and intrigue. The beginning of the play begins in Athen

Theseus, Hippolyta, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena. Here we learn that Theseus
and Hippolyta are getting, however, they are not happy as one might think. Now, Egeus, the father
of Hermia insists she marries Demetrius, one of her two suitors. However, Hermia does not want
to marry Demetrius, she loves Lysander. On the other hand, Helena loves Demetrius, he does not

Kotter Model Case Study
With the proliferation of threats and uncertainty of the security environment, the role of the army
has become increasingly central in protecting the American interests. Since the realization of this
mission is a collective task, leadership remains the best way to give commanders, at every
echelon, the necessary qualities to lead their Soldiers, maintain focus, and preserve a healthy
environment to ensure the achievement of objectives. The case of the 4th ABCT presents clear
evidence in this area. Three years ago, it was considered one of the best maneuver brigades in
FORSCOM. Today, because of multitude of problems, mainly related to leadership, this unit
appears unable to find its identity of model unit. As new commander, and after identifying the lack
of esprit de corps as the main leadership problem, my vision consist in restoring the 4th ABCT
image by using Kotter model with a focus on measuring effectiveness during the process.

It will provide me a clear, logical, effective, and sequential process for leading brigade change.
Based on this methodology, I will also keep in mind the successful experience of William Bratton,
commissioner of the New York Police Department from 1994 to 1996, who led a veritable change
within the New York Police Department (Andrea R. Nagy. Joel Podolny L103RC).
The first step in creating successful change is establishing a sense of urgency. The previous
image for the Brigade will be my landmark to convince who resist changing. I will demonstrate
that our collective interest is to change as soon as possible to revive the mutual trust and the
pride to belonging to one of the best maneuver brigade in FORSCOM. I will argue that change
will release us from stress, will give us means to balance between our military career and our
social. I will also warn that any delay in starting change will certainly affect the future of each one

There they feed for 2 3 days and they increase their weight 10 20 times. Thy then drop off into the vegetation and continue to grow. After several months, the lava molts to an 8 legged nymph of around 2mm. A few months later the nymph molts again into the final stage of tick development; the adult. The adult female can only feed successfully on larger animals such as dogs, deer sheep and cows. When it feeds it can grow to 150 times its original weight. The immature stages of the tick can paratize almost any warm blooded animal. [IMAGE]The picture to the left is of a male and female tick mating. • 5. Analysis Of The Poem Katherine Mansfield Introduction: Katherine Mansfield was a well acclaimed author born in 1888. Her literature was in the form of short stories spanning no more than several passages long. Many dub her as an innovator in literature for her distinctive use of realism and symbolism which at the time was foreign to short stories and writing in general. Most authors at the time fabricated fictional worlds with fantastic characters in their stories but Mansfield was more interested in writing and emerging her audience into stories about realistic people in everyday environments facing internal struggle, which gained her much attention. Many of her pieces are also autobiographical as they subtly reference many moments and mixed emotions that Katherine had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Appearance also plays a big part in society, if you are not well received at first glance or dress in a specific way, you will most likely be stereotyped before you even introduce yourself. A society discriminates, unable to give its workers equality. In his painting Cargador de Flores, Diego Rivera denounces subjugation by portraying two commoners struggling to survive. Rivera employs these workers as a representation of the proletariat class of Mexico, and by utilizing his illustration to depict the working people of his country, he applies this artwork to exhibit the efforts of the Mexican laborer. Anger boils within my veins. I realize that this child, no older than me, will likely spend the rest of her life toiling in this neighborhood; she will forever be servile to society s demands. I do not know if she didn t address this because she had limited interaction with the males because of her gender, or whether it was simply of no interest to her. If she could have explained further why she didn t take much account to this it would have added a more well rounded ethnography. What roles did the fathers play in the child raising? Were they passive like it appeared or was it just not discussed? Dettwyler displayed tremendous anthropological skills as well as some not so good skills. A good thing she did was build a high amount rapport with the Malians. This was important so they would allow her to measure them, and also so they would trust her when she taught them how to properly nourish their children. Firstly, the Canada Goose brand faces a threat from the increased number of fake products by counterfeiters. Secondly, there is a rising concern from independent stores that national chain stores would discount Canada Goose products causing their sales to drop. And thirdly, Lisa Freedman from Asmuns Place made a last minute offer for exclusive distribution of Canada Goose female and menswear through their store chain. This offer restricts Canada Goose s flexibility in terms of choosing a distribution partner, but simplifies the distribution process. Recommendations Pursue both initial opportunities with the women s closing product line for Asmuns Place and with the men s product line for Levene s Menswear. It will provide the ability to bring newer products to market, and not restrict the distribution of products to a single national chain store. Canada Goose should define the conditions under which Asmuns Place or any other retail chain will feature its products in store advertisements. It also needs to assure its original distribution partners that they will be able to maintain their existing brand prestige and pricing throughout all their stores in Canada. • 16. The Importance Of Life In Captivity For Animals Life in captivity for animals is comparable in some situations to humans living inside of a prison. The restrictions that are imposed on these animals while in captivity are unbearable living conditions that affect the animal both mentally and physically. The animals understand that this is not their home which leads to the breakdown of their psyche. One example of this comes from a zoo in the United Kingdom. In the year 1979, the Bristol Zoo gained a new animal which would become one of their biggest attractions. Misha the male polar bear caught the eye of the public with his unusual and odd behavior. Researchers that studied animal rights in the late twentieth century linked this behavior to Misha s enclosure at the zoo. Researchers came to the conclusion that the prison like living conditions that Misha encountered was the cause of his psychotic appearance. The public had described him as looking like a beast who was breaking down as a result of the captivity instead of an average polar bear in a zoo. The zoo was able to view Misha through surveillance during this entire process, similar to humans living in a prison or an asylum. According to the article by Andrew Flack, Following media attention from animal rights organizations and the media between 1985 and the early 1990s, Misha s psychotic appearance in a repeatedly evoked image of the prisons and asylums of the past, where surveillance, spectacle, and suffering collided to alter the natures of the beasts within ... • 17. Gender Equality In Nazi Germany At the turn of the twentieth century, a new representation of the female race was beginning to emerge in German society. The was primarily a result of the brutal impact of WWI on the population of men in Germany. They had suffered immense loss of life and nearly drained their supply of young men because so many had died in the war. Meanwhile, German women had been forced to fill in the gaps in the labor force. While the men were off in battle, they would do the jobs that men would normally be doing. Consequently, many women became accustomed to working, being paid, and excelling in their careers. This gave way for the emergence of petitioning for other women s rights such as women s suffrage, equal pay, and other emancipations. Women began challenging fashion norms and breaking the stigma that a woman s purpose was limited to the family and home. However, as veterans began to return from war, they began to reclaim their old jobs, women were laid off, and although progress had been made, there was (and still is) a long way to go in order to achieve true equality. Things began to slide back to the way they were, and with the enabling of the Third Reich any ideas of gender equality came crashing down completely. This is not to say that women were viewed as useless or worthless in Nazi Germany. It was quite the contrary. Women were a crucial part of Hitler s plan to expand the Aryan race to maximum capacity. That is basically saying that if people have a comfort zone they won t fully be able to enjoy the things that make them happy. With comfort zones it holds people back from becoming the best. The dictionary states that comfort zones are a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease without stress . Relief , soothe , and ease are just some of the synonyms of this phrase. Discomfort , stress , and unhappiness are some of the antonyms of this word. Comfort zones make one feel happy or safe, and they tend to go back to that place or state of mind when times get hard. The company was growing strongly with annual sales rising 30% per year and approaching $90m. The company had established a strong brand with enormous customer loyalty. On October 30, 1996, everything changed. The company s values spoke of nourishing people and when the crisis came it was an adherence to honest, straight talking and accepting responsibility that helped to get the company through. There are critics who refuse to credit the company with any integrity whatsoever but even these will concede that as an exercise in crisis management, Odwalla stands as an example of best practice that few can match. The year after the crisis, Odwalla was voted Best Brand Name in the Bay Area by San Francisco Magazine. This was the first indication amongst many that Odwalla s reputation had survived. http:/ /www.kidsource.com/kidsource/content2/ecoli/odwalla.11.23.html To Odwalla, the recent incidents of E. coli O157:H7 are a call to action for the entire fresh apple juice industry. Adherence to industry standards for good manufacturing practices is no longer enough to assure that E. coli O157:H7 is not present in fresh apple juice. Previously accepted practices for preventing E. coli O157:H7 contamination, such as thoroughly washing apples, cannot assure safety, said Stephen Williamson, CEO of Odwalla. Further, according to Dr. Michael Doyle, microbiologist from the University of Georgia, Testing of finished product does not guarantee the absence of harmful pathogens such as E. coli O157:H7. A constitution refers to a set of rules and guidelines intended to create both the fundamental and structural principles of the government in a state or nation. A constitution is either written or unwritten. On one hand, a written constitution is a formal document that defines the attributes or characteristics of the constitutional settlement, the rules governing the political system and the roles and responsibilities of the government and rights of citizens and inhabitants in a codified form (Shamgar 345). On the other hand, an unwritten or uncodified constitutionrefers to a form of the constitution where the essential rules of any nation s government are in the form of customs, precedent, usage, and a range of statutes and legal instruments. Only three countries in the world have an unwritten constitution. They include the United Kingdom, Israel, and New Zealand. Ordinarily, a constitution is written following major political revolutions or reforms. For instance, the United Statesof America wrote their constitution in 1787 following the Second World War. Germany and Japan also wrote theirs at that time. Written Constitution versus Unwritten Constitution Traditionally, there were two main reasons why constitutions were essential. First, it offered an explanation on the structure of the government and its roles and responsibilities. Second, governments and citizens viewed a constitution as the pillar of liberal democracy. Beyond just establishing societal values, this open trade allowed for a growth in the economy and in literature. Many authors went to write stories based on these spices. The preliminary use of pedicle screws began in the lumbar spine. As surgeons became more comfortable with the complex anatomy required for accurate screw placement, the use of pedicle instrumentation has evolved to include their use in the thoracolumbar and thoracic spine. The impetus behind their increased use is a result of the many advantages that pedicle screw anchorage offers over traditional hook and rod constructs. Reaction Of Walter Benjamin And The Film Shadow Magic Reaction Response to Walter Benjamin and the film Shadow Magic One might generalize by saying: the technique of reproduction detaches the reproduced object from the domain of tradition. By making many reproductions it substitutes a plurality of copies for a unique existence. And in permitting the reproduction to meet the beholder or listener in his own particular situation, it reactivates the object reproduced. Walter Benjamin, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (1936) Benjamin is saying that reproductions reduce the integrity of the art because the product is no longer authentic. Benjamin also speaks of aura a symptomatic process whose significance points beyond the realm of art. (1936). according to him this is missing in works that have been reproduced or produced indirectly, i.e. a copy of a painting or a photograph. I think that the value of art is in the art itself and the use of it to express one s inner goals and desires. Benjamin also speaks of the shattering of tradition that he believes is caused by the loss of authenticity of art in its original form. I believe that while there would have been a certain intimacy between the artist and the subject in the past. That does not exist today due to technology. This description of the dead bird relates to the late father because in many ways the father was battered and somewhat lifeless at times. However other times he was vibrant and full of ideas which the condor also represented by its powerful beak and the bald neck that gave its senile head a solemnly hieratic air (73, Schulz). Before the father s disappearance, the house the family lives in became infested with cockroaches. To try and kill the little creatures he would leap from one chair to another with a javelin (75, Schulz) in his hands stabbing at the ground while emitting screams of terror (75, Schulz). In a sense he had grown wild (75, Schulz) attempting to rid the house of the invasion. His hatred for the cockroaches created a permeant petrified tragic mask (75, Schulz) on his face and the constant anticipation of a cockroach running by made the father go perpetually insane. He could no longer resist the intense loathing for the cockroaches causing him to fall prey to madness and become completely subjected to it (75, Schulz). This shows how the fathers reality has been completely altered to the point of insanity, he can no longer go about normal human activities because of his uncontrollable need to kill the cockroaches. Still he fought to obtain the reality he is losing ever so quickly, but eventually he lost the sense of who he is and control over his own body. Finally, one night he lay on the floor naked, stained with black totem spots, the lines of his ribs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
