2. Why bring your own technology?
• Students of today are 21st
century
learners
•They live in a digital world
•They demand creativity
•They are constantly connected
•They are collaborators

4. What are the benefits of BYOT?
• Parent-financed-students bring their own devices, allowing
the budget to go to other things
• Devices are often up-to-date
• Learning becomes accessible anytime
• Information is readily available
• Students and teachers are no longer confined to the four
walls of the classroom
• Prepares students for the technology they will encounter in
higher education
• Promotes creativity
• Allows for differentiation among learners

5. How can BYOT be used?
• Data organization tools
• Web-based applications for classroom polling & quick
tests
• Audio for podcasting and radio broadcasts
• Video
• QR codes
• Digital storytelling
• Language learning
• Probe attachments for measuring data
• Course companion sites

7. Challenges of implementation
• Network infrastructure
• Bandwidth
• Inappropriate use of devices
• Classroom management of devices
• Control of student use of devices and
networks
• Theft of devices
• High poverty of the district

8. Most Important factors surrounding byot
• Infrastructure
• Funding
• Support
• Policies
• Training

9. Steps to implementation in the schools
1. Establish a technology team within the school
2. Train the team on proper management and use of technology in the
classroom
3. Establish a technology plan and policy for the school
4. Write and adopt an Internet Acceptable Use Policy
5. Establish a forum to share ideas about technology use in the classroom
(Edmodo)
6. Conduct professional development that prepares teachers for the
integration of technology and technology management
7. Have each teacher write their own technology policy for their classroom
with rules and consequences for misuse of technology
8. Implement CyberSafety Curriculum
9. Install wireless routers in every classroom to ensure wireless capabilities
10. Engage the community through news media, social media, and the school
web site
9
10. Steps to implementation continued
11. Post all school technology plans and policies to the district web site
12. Hold a parent forum regarding BYOT
13. Have the technology team available to students and parents at
open house
14. Discuss expectations and consequences with students
15. Have students sign the Internet Acceptable Use policy
16. Have students sign their teacher’s classroom technology policy
17. Advertise BYOT within the school through school news and web
sites
10
11. Projected budget
Infrastructure for all (6) schools:
$367,899.00
Devices for all schools including two
iPad carts and four laptop mobile carts
per school: $688,798.91
Total covered by esplost: $1,056,697.91
11
12. Too much?
Save money on implementation by:
• Having a longer time period of implementation (2 years
instead of 1)
• Taking bids on contracted work such as wifi installation
• Buying cheaper devices (Apple=expensive)
• Not buying devices at all (BYOT can JUST mean student
devices)
