This document describes stations for a SOLO learning activity. At the Hexagonal Learning station, students write things they know about a topic on separate hexagons to demonstrate unistructural, multistructural, and relational understanding as they group the hexagons. At the Question Generator station, students generate questions at different SOLO levels about a different topic. At the LEGO Building station, students create a structure and evaluate what SOLO level their creation achieves.

1. SOLO Station: Hexagonal Learning
Pick a specific topic you know extremely well in your subject area. This can be
at a KS4 or KS5 level:
It must be a different topicto the one that you used at the ‘Question
Generator/ Thinking Square’ station
Unistructural
Write 1 relevant thing you know about this topic on 1 hexagon. You are
now displaying a unistructural level of understanding (surface
understanding)
Multistructural
Write as many relevant things you know about the topic on to SEPARATE
hexagons. This is concerned with quantity of your understanding
Relational
Try moving the separate hexagons together to find relevant links and
relationships in your specific topic area. You are now moving to ahigh
quality level of learning
Extended Abstract
Where 3 or more hexagons meet (a ‘node’) can you generate a high
quality question and create a solutionto the question?You are now have
a deep level of understanding

2. SOLO Station: Question Generator and Thinking
Square Solutions
Pick a specific topic area in your subject’s GCSE or A
Level syllabus:
It must be a different topicto the one that you used at the ‘Hexagonal
Learning’ station
1. Generate 4 questions relating to your topic for your
students
2. Generate one question at each level of SOLO
taxonomy:
Unistructural
Multistructural
Relational
Extended Abstract
3. Jot down the solutions to the questions you have
generated on the ‘SOLO Thinking Square Solutions’
sheet provided
NOTE: Use the example of the GCSE PE questions to
help you if needed.

3. SOLO Station: LEGO Building
With the LEGO provided, your challenge is to create a
LEGO structure on your own!!
Questions to consider:
Is your creation high quality?
What SOLO level do you think your LEGO creation
is?
Please write on the ‘SOLO LEGO Building’ sheet to
evaluate your progress and to explain why you
think you achieved a certain SOLO level
