In this slides all about steroids
Focused on adverse effects of steroids and anabolic steroids.
Anabolic asteroids are synthetic for men made version of testesterones. Testosterone is the main sex hormone in men. It needed to develop and maintain male sex characteristics, such as facial hair, deep voice and muscle growth.

3. Introduction
Steroids are class of medication called Anti-
inflammatory drugs.
Used to treat inflammation & inflammatory disease,
Disorders.
They have ability to reduce and block effect of
chemicals responsible for inflammation.
The adrenal cortex secretes steroidal hormones which
have glucocorticoid, mineralocorticoid and weakly
androgenic activities.

4. Function of Steroids
Stress response
Immune response
Regulation of inflammation
Carbohydrate metabolism
Protein catabolism
Blood electrolyte level maintenance
Control of behavior

6. Pharmacological Actions
Carbohydrate & Protein metabolism
Fat metabolism
Calcium metabolism & water excretion
Cardiovascular- permissive effect
Skeletal muscles- weakness in case of hypo. And
hypercortism
Stomach- increased secretion of gastric acid and pepsin
Inflammatory response- reduction of phagocytic activity
Immunological and allergic response- suppresses all types
of allergic phenomenon and hypersensitization

7. Pharmacokinetics
Absorption- effective in oral route, act rapidly by
IV/IM
Bioavailability- oral bioavailability of synthetic
corticosteroids are high.
Plasma protein binding is 90%
Metabolism by hepatic microsomal enzymes.
Excretion- urine
Distribution- widely distributed – 10 L/kg
Plasma t1/2 – 66 minutes

8. Adverse effects
Occurs usually with prolonged therapy
Mineralocorticoids
Na and water retention, edema, hypokalemic alkalosis
and HTN
Glucocorticoids

•Cushing habits- Characterized by
moon like face, accumulation of fat in
the truncal region.
9. Adverse effect (cont...)
Hyperglycemia and Glycosuria
Myopathy & Muscle
Susceptibility to infections
Peptic ulceration
Osteoporosis
Glaucoma
Growth retardation in children
Fetal abnormality (IUGR)

11. Definition
There are androgens with anabolic properties and are rarely
prescribed, but are commonly abused by athletes in an
attempt to enhance perfomance.
They are developed in replace of androgens.
Classification
17 alpha- alkyl substituted compounds:
Oxymetholone
Stanozolol
Others:

Hepatotoxicity
Hepatitis B & C
Abusers of anabolic steroids use same needles so risk
of HIV / AIDS.
