Alcohol consumption can have several ill effects: 1. It slows down brain activity and nervous system function, impairing judgment and reaction time. This increases the risk of road accidents from drunken driving. 2. It lowers inhibitions, making drunk people more quarrelsome. This leads to increased violence and crime. 3. Heavy drinking on a single occasion can cause staggered movement, slurred speech, blurred vision, dizziness, and vomiting. Drinking large quantities can make a person pass out.

In chemistry, an alcohol is an organic compound in which
the hydroxyl functional group (-OH) is bound to
a carbon atom. In particular, this carbon center should
be saturated, having single bonds to three other atoms.
An important class of alcohols are the
simple acyclic alcohols, the general formula for which is
CnH2n+1OH. Of those, ethanol (C2H5OH) is the type of
alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, and in common
speech the word alcohol refers specifically to ethanol.

Ethanol is commercially produced using a process called fermentation.
Many
other alcohols can be made this way, but are more likely to be produced
by synthetic routes - from natural gas, oil or coal.
Fermentation?
Fermentation is the process in which yeast breaks down sugar into
alcohol and carbon dioxide. Yeast are tiny single-celled fungi that
contain special enzymes responsible for this reaction.
The word equation for this process is:
Glucose + yeast alcohol + carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide gas bubbles
out of the fermenting solution into the air leaving a mixture of ethanol
and water. It's important that no air is present or the yeast will
produce ethanoic acid - the chemical found in vinegar.
