LOCATION:
IIT Roorkee is situated at the foothill of the Himalayas, in Hardwar district, within the state of
Uttarakhand. Roorkee is a quiet town of moderate size in the district of Haridwar (Uttarakhand), is
located on the banks of the upper Ganga Canal, which takes off at Haridwar, 30km away.
It is the gateway to the pilgrim centres of Hardwar, Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath, and tourist
attractions of Dehradun and Mussoorie.
The Thomason College of Engineering was founded in
1845 to help train engineers for the construction of the
Ganges Canal. The Canal Engineer's Bungalow lies

HISTORY:
The institution has its origins in a class started in 1845 to train local youth in engineering to assist in
public works then beginning. In 1847 it was officially established. It was renamed as the Thomason
College of Civil Engineering in 1854 in honour of its founder, Sir James Thomason, lieutenant governor
1843–53. The first Indian to graduate from the Roorkee college was Rai Bahadur Kanhaiya Lal in 1852.
On 21 September 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation's
seventh Indian Institute of Technology, renaming it to the current name, Indian Institute of Technology
Roorkee. The ordinance was converted into an act by the Parliament to make IIT Roorkee an "Institution of
National Importance".

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1847 and is the oldest engineering department in
India. The Electrical Engineering department of the Thomson College was established in the year 1897, and was
one of the earliest such specializations in the world. The Architecture department is first in India in instituting a
master's degree course in Architecture
(M. Arch.) in the year 1969–70.
In 1978 Institute of Paper Technology, Saharanpur was merged with the then University of Roorkee. The Institute
of Paper Technology was established as School of Paper Technology by the
Government of India in 1964, with an aid from the Royal Swedish Government. The school was renamed as the
Institute of Paper Technology in July 1968 and subsequently Department of Paper Technology in July 1992
ABOUT IIT ROORKEE:
IIT Roorkee is one of the biggest technical
institutions in the country having the largest
number of academic units. It has 21 academic
departments covering engineering, applied
sciences, humanities & social sciences, and
management programmes, 1 academic centre,
3 centres of excellence, 5 academic service
centres and 3 supporting units.
The Institute has two campuses. The main campus is at Roorkee in Uttarakhand and the other one is 50 km away
at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The campus at Roorkee is spread over 356 acres of landscaped lush greenery.
Nestled within this are several heritage buildings, modern academic departments, twelve hostels, messes,
hospital, school, banks, community centres, indoor and outdoor sports facilities which include three sports
stadiums, a modern swimming pool, yoga bhawan, dairy, students’ clubs and several activity centres and

RR Cinemas
The climate here is extreme during winters as well as summers. During winters, the temperature
falls down to as low as 1–20 C. In summers the temperature goes up to as high as 41–43 C. The rainfall
is average and the downpour is heavy in the months of July and August.
CLIMATE
Another point of interest for any person visiting Roorkee would be the weather conditions in this
part of the country. Roorkee has a typical climate as in the plains of Northern India with a touch of the winter
chill-a clear effect of the proximity to the hills. Summer months are between March and mid-June when the
temperature goes up into the high 30s (deg C) and it is quite dry and sunny. This is followed by a spell of
the famous Indian monsoon till the end of July. Beyond this time, till late October, the weather remains
generally bright and sunny with temperatures in the pleasant 15-25 deg C range with rain and storm when
the temperature and humidity rise. Winters start around October and reach a peak in December-January
when the chill can go up to 1 deg C. The cycle continues.

Bhawan comprises one new wing having 66 rooms (Single seated).
AZAD BHAWAN
Now a new building (72 double seated room) is under construction, making a total strength of
Cautley Bhawan around 657 seats.
CAUTLEY BHAWAN
It comprises of 2 new wings having a total of 114 rooms.
Construction of a whole new wing having 84 single seated
rooms has been completed, which is soon to be inaugurated,
and construction of 2 new wings having a total of 45 rooms is
under process.
GOVIND BHAWAN
The whole Bhawan is divided into Three wings, the new wing (all rooms single seated), “A” block
(all rooms double seated) and “B” Block (all rooms double seated).
RAJENDRA BHAWAN
At present total 218 double seated and 165 single seated rooms are available in the Bhawan and 32 new
single seated rooms are under construction.
The capacity of the Bhawan has been increased by 72 rooms by adding 03 new wings in August, 2007

Rajiv Bhawan boasts of 675 rooms distributed between 6 floors, dining mess , canteen and 8 guest rooms. The
bhawan also has a state of art cyber cafe with 20 high end desktop computers, a party room and a common room
with HD television , 2 table tennis tables , 2 foosball tables ,2 caroms and 6 chess boards. It also has a washing
room with 6 front loading fully automatic washing machines. The bhawan provides ease of accessibility with 6
lifts. Bhawan inmates also enjoy high speed internet through wired LAN. Rajiv Bhawan also boasts of an eco
friendly design with solar powered water heater and lighting.

This unit, located near Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments, has 9 AC Suite, 40 AC Rooms and 11 non-AC
rooms. In each of them, two furnished beds are provided. Each of them has an attached toilet with hot and cold
water facility. All rooms are serviced by an emergency generator set.

CLUBS
The competitive academic environment and co-curricular activities on campus keep the students on their toes.
But everyone needs some time off, to relax and recharge . Clubs at IIT-R are the best place for this. The
students' clubs: the Hobbies club, the U.G. club, the P.G. club, the Alaknanda
club and the Jawahar club house the indoor sports facilities including seven Billiards & Snooker
Tables, Carrom boards, Chess boards, Table Tennis facilities and a Foosball table. The hobbies club
also has sections devoted to pursuits like star-gazing, philately and numismatics, and robotics. The clubs
also have reading rooms with a plethora of newspapers and light magazines. Each of the clubs have a
TV room with a seating capacity of a hundred-odd people providing a great atmosphere for watching the
winning sixer or the not-so-interesting soap operas.

Physical recreation through games and sports has been an important part of the Institute since its
inception. Games like football, cricket and hockey were introduced around 1870 followed closely by
squash and boating. The practice of holding an Annual Athletic Meet was started in 1873. Rowing in the
Ganga Canal has remained one of the most popular sports since 1901, and the Annual Boat Regatta is a
popular and keenly awaited event every year. The Lion Trophy, the most prestigious and coveted prize in
sports was instituted in 1912. Today, the Institute has some of the best facilities in a number of games and
sports and awards proficiencies in 14 games. The tradition continues, as students of the institute keep
making use of the marvellous sports facilities to excel in sports and games. In order to motivate the
students and to get them interested in sports, a special scheme of NSO (National Sports Organisation)
has been started from the session 2007-08.

GREEN CAMPUS INITIATIVES
IIT Roorkee always had sustainable initiatives at the core of all activities, despite the relatively small campus
covering only 365 acres with over 8000 students, 450+ faculty and 1000+ staff at various levels. IIT Roorkee
campus has significant greenery covering all parts of the campus, something that is appreciated by all
visitors on campus.
Faculty and students led initiatives to save significant electricity by conducting an energy audit and
developed policy for reducing electricity consumption and energy conservation. Using Solar PV for electricity
generation as well as Solar Thermal for cooking and water heating covering entire campus is an iconic
initiative undertaken by the faculty and students for maximum utilization of energy at the Institute. All the
systems have sensors installed to check optimal performance of installations and generate data for further
research in these areas.
The institute as a policy decided that, henceforth all new building proposals shall be vetted by the
Institute Green Committee before their final approval. The Green Committee must look into the various
environmental and energy aspects for a green technology and environment.
More Green Initiatives are being planned for wastewater treatment as well as recycling and rainwater
harvesting in a decentralized manner. Out of the total solid waste generated in the campus separating
organic and inorganic waste is being planned and reviewing the available technology that can co-generate
biomass energy from our organic waste.
National Social Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of the institute, primarily the under graduate and post
graduate students are also going to propagate these ideas amongst the neighbourhood villages.
