This document discusses two models for identifying special needs students who require special education: the discrepancy model and the response to intervention model. • Special education is defined as the method of educating special needs children
in a way that tends to their individual differences.
• Common disabilities include communication disorders, learning disabilities,
behavioral disorders, physical disabilities and developmental disabilities.
• Educators use specially modified teaching methods to address each individual
needs.

which are not very reliable.

INTERVENTION
• First, children with learning difficulties
in the first two school years are
identified.
• Then they are subjected to reading
remediation program for further
scrutiny.
• The response of children to this
determines if they need special
education or not.

MODELS
• These models effectively help in
identifying children who need special
education.
• The two above mentioned models have
a high rate of successful detections.
• Both the models are carried out
extensively and are used all over the
world.

7. DISADVANTAGES OF DETECTION
MODELS
• The discrepancy model relates the
child’s IQ to academics which can
sometimes turn out to be false.
• This sometimes allows children with
low iq to get the same level of
treatment as special needs children.
• The response to intervention method
can be sometimes inaccurate because
of unaccountability of different factors
that cumulate in low grades.
