Identification Of
Special Needs Students
For Special Education
INTRODUCTION
• Special education is defined as the method of educating special needs children
in a way that tends to their individual differences.
• Common disabilities include communication disorders, learning disabilities,
behavioral disorders, physical disabilities and developmental disabilities.
• Educators use specially modified teaching methods to address each individual
needs.
IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIAL NEEDS
CHILDREN
• Some have a medical history, hence are
easily qualified for special education in
NYC.
• Others who are diagnosed with such
issues, have to get a certification upon
completion of some model tests.
• The two commonly tests are
discrepancy model and response to
intervention.
IDENTIFICATION BY DISCREPANCY
MODEL
• A student is eligible if his/her academic
achievements is well below someone
with the same IQ.
• They are then qualified for specific
learning difficulty (sld) and special
education in nyc.
• This model has its fair share of
criticism because of the discrepancy
between iq and academic achievements
which are not very reliable.
IDENTIFICATION BY RESPONSE TO
INTERVENTION
• First, children with learning difficulties
in the first two school years are
identified.
• Then they are subjected to reading
remediation program for further
scrutiny.
• The response of children to this
determines if they need special
education or not.
ADVANTAGES OF DETECTION
MODELS
• These models effectively help in
identifying children who need special
education.
• The two above mentioned models have
a high rate of successful detections.
• Both the models are carried out
extensively and are used all over the
world.
DISADVANTAGES OF DETECTION
MODELS
• The discrepancy model relates the
child’s IQ to academics which can
sometimes turn out to be false.
• This sometimes allows children with
low iq to get the same level of
treatment as special needs children.
• The response to intervention method
can be sometimes inaccurate because
of unaccountability of different factors
that cumulate in low grades.
Thank You
