Heavy rains in mid-October 2020 caused flash flooding in Hyderabad, India. A deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal on October 11th and moved towards India over the next three days, dumping heavy rain on Hyderabad on the 12th and 13th. This caused widespread flooding that affected over 37,400 families and killed 61 people across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The flooding was exacerbated by infrastructure development like housing colonies and shrinking of lakes that reduced natural flood buffers. The floods caused an estimated $670 million in property damage in Hyderabad alone.

Hyderabad : “The unusually heavy rainfall was due to two reasons :
The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal that moved onto the
land in Hyderabad.
The second was the rain bearing clouds of the withdrawing
Southwest monsoon also pouring out.”

The floodgates of the Himayat Sagar were lifted as the water reached
full reservoir levels, and the Musi River flowed full stream, flooding
several localities and flowing over two causeway bridges.
In 1908, devastation caused by a cloud burst and the flooding
claimed 15,000 lives and rendered 80,000 homeless.
Two reservoirs — Osmansagar and Himayatsagar — came up.

A modern system of drainage was also built.
But in the last few decades, several colonies, as well as large real
estate ventures, have come up in the full-tank levels — the buffer
area — of lakes, large water bodies that existed for centuries have
shrunk in size, encroachments have eaten into natural waterways,
and stormwater drains get easily clogged.

As per Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials,
heavy rains and floods on October 13-14 and again on October 17
inundated many areas, affecting over 37,400 families.
On October 13, various localities were inundated and about 35,309
families were affected.
Another 2,100 families were evacuated to safer places on October
17.
The state has reported 61 flood-related deaths, reported Times of
India.

27 People died in Maharashtra
As per the officials Hyderabad suffered Property Loss of 670
Crores.
Extreme crop loss in north Karnataka, Andhra
Pradesh and Telangana occurred due to the system.
The CM of Telanagana estimated ₹5,000 crore worth of damage.
