MPEG stands for the Motion Picture Experts Group which creates and publishes standards for video technology. The MPEG family includes MPEG-1, used for Video CDs; MPEG-2, used for DVDs and digital video broadcasting; MPEG-4, used for Internet and broadcast video with improved quality over MPEG-2; MPEG-7, which describes multimedia content; and MPEG-21, defining a framework for multimedia delivery. Each version standardized video formats for different applications and platforms to allow interoperable playback and distribution of video and audio content.
