The humanistic perspective in psychology focuses on conscious experiences, free will, personal responsibility, and an optimistic view of human nature. Abraham Maslow proposed a hierarchy of needs with self-actualization at the top, or fulfilling one's potential. Carl Rogers emphasized the importance of unconditional positive regard, genuineness, and empathy for personal growth. Humanistic psychologists assess personality through one's self-concept and the ideal self. While providing an optimistic view, humanistic theory has been criticized as unrealistic and difficult to test empirically.
