INTRODUCTION
- What is the HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX ?
• It is a statistical tool used to measure country’s overall
achievement in its social and economic dimensions.
• The social and economic dimensions of a country are based
on the health of people, their level of education attainment
and their standard of living.
• The HDI is the geometric mean of normalized indices for
each of the three dimensions.

STEP TO CALCULATE HDI (NEW METHOD)
1 Step 1. Creating the dimension indices :
The dimension indices are calculated as:
Dimension Index =
actual value − minimum value
maximum value − minimum value
2 Step 2. Aggregating the dimensional indices to produce the Human Development
Index
The HDI is the geometric mean of the three dimension indices:
HDI = (IHealth.IEducation.IIncome)

SOME IMPORTANT FACTS OF HDI
1 Create an overall score between 0 and 1.
2 1 - indicates a high level of human development index.
3 0 - indicates a low level of human development index.
COUNTRY GROUPING
Level Human Development Score in Development Index No. of Countries
Very High Human Development 0.800 and above 51
High Human Development 0.700 - 0.799 54
Medium Human Development 0.550 - 0.699 42
Low Human Development Below 0.550 41

HOW TO CALCULATE HDI (NEW METHOD) ? -
EXAMPLE
The following India’s data is taken from UNDP website :
Expected years of schooling (years) 11.7
Mean years of schooling (years) 6.3
Life expectancy at birth (years) 68.3
Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita (2011 PPP $) 5663
Education Index
Expected years of schooling index = 11.7−0
18−0 = 0.65
Mean years of schooling index = 6.3−0
15−0 = 0.42
Education Index = 0.65+0.42
2 = 0.535

HOW TO CALCULATE HDI (NEW METHOD) ? -
EXAMPLE
Health Index = 68.3−20
85−20 = 0.7431 (approx.)
Income Index = ln(5663)−ln(100)
ln(75000)−ln(100) = 0.6097 (approx.)
HDI = (0.535 ∗ 0.7431 ∗ 0.6097)
1
3 = 0.6235
From UNDP website, HDI of India = 0.624
The calculated HDI = 0.6235

as health index, education index and income index.
2
It acts as a true yardstick to measure development
in real sense.
3
It helps as differentiating factor to distinguish and
classify different nations on the basis of their HDI
ranks.
