Designing Games That Stand Out | David ReicheltJessica Tams
Delivered at Casual Connect Asia 2017. In the beginning it wasn't too difficult to make a profitable business making games on the appstore. In recent years appstores have become flooded with games. The market now demands that game designers fine tune their design skills to a high level. In this session we'll discuss what it takes to make it in this industry as a game designer and what every designer should focus on in order to make games that stand out in the market.
Case studies of several game-based learning projects developed, used in classrooms and evaluated in New Zealand.
Presented by Stephen Knightly, MD of InGame and Chairperson of the NZ Game Developers Association at the EdTech Leaders Summit, Auckland, New Zealand in July 2016.
How can we use games in the classroom? Don't use them because they're "cool with the kids" (that's a recipe for chocolate coated brocolli), instead used them because they're sophisticated, challenging digital simulations.

How to stand out in a hit driven business - Game Connection Paris 2013 - SebK...Wooga
The mobile gaming market is huge with roughly 4,000 new iOS games per month and more than 5bn USD revenue per year. But that market also has a huge number of players who want a piece of the pie making the mobile gaming industry a very hit driven business. In his talk, Sebastian Kriese Corporate Partnerships Manager at Wooga, will give some insights about what the Berlin based social and mobile game developer considers a hit game and how they manage to create at least 2 of these hits per year.
These are slide's from Mike Cabibbo's presentation to the Orlando iOS Meetup group. He built Math With Your Friends, a mashup of math problems and scrabble. Be sure to download the game when it releases on iOS.

Leanna Prater - Can You Create A Game?: Rethinking Student AssessmentSeriousGamesAssoc
Presenter: Leanna Prater, District Technology Resource Teacher, Fayette County Public Schools
The Can You Create a Game Challenge is a framework to help educators bridge the gap between a student’s need to play, create and explore new digital tools while addressing state mandated standards for assessment. When carefully written, the Can You Create a Game Challenge uses a combination of game development/ designer constraints, player goals, narrative structures of a game and a student plan sheet for teachers to intentionally plan for and assess specific learning targets within student created digital games. In addition, students demonstrate understanding of skills, content knowledge, computation thinking, problem solving and creativity. Recent results of teacher creation and use of Can You Create a Game Challenge, the framework and classroom applications will be shared, as well as the 5E inquiry based instructional design model which can be use with existing games in the classroom.
The Complete Game Startup Turnaround - When even 27 million downloads and 300...Vlad Micu
Some of the biggest causes of a game studio to fail include: a demotivated and/or burned out team, lack of funds, legal trouble, not seeing the problems ahead, a neglected game and/or audience, internal arguments and publishing problems. At the start of January 2014, Critical Force Entertainment based of Kajaani, Finland had every single one of those challenges one way or another. This talk is intended to share the insights, learned lessons and best practices of how we succeeded through failing endlessly, even with a game that had a huge audience which we sadly never managed to properly monetize. Regardless of that, being creative and coming up with solutions to our problems on a step-by-step basis got us to become strong than we ever thought we could be. The main focus of this talk is on sharing our story of performing a complete startup turnaround regardless of the relative success we've had with our games. Topics include:
I will be sharing concrete examples of how we tackled the above topics and will provide various forms of data, references, tips, best practices and learned lessons.

Hi all! Welcome to my talk: .
When I was working on this presentation I was inclined to rename the presentation. We’ve come from a long road..
Hi all! Welcome to my talk:
But who am I on a more personal level.
But who am I on a more personal level. As soon as they were big enough to play games on a tablet, I was looking fror games that we both enjoyed playing in stead of only getting enjoyment from watching her play. That made me think and started talking to Menno about this en we decided to found lapp
Lapp is a game ideation, prototyping and user research company. We create innovative games that are further produced by our partners.
Access to tablet devices amongst children grows exponentially!
This is what actually happens:
Solitary play – isolated from surroundings
This is what parents want/expect:
Children playing together
The sedond pillar of Lapp is social interaction. When we design games we try to not focus on what is happening on the screen, but we use the screen to elicit social interactions between the players. Conversation starters
In the game rups we merged two types of gameplay that is attractive for both age groups. On the one hand cognitive skills for the parent: the parent has to figure out how to solve the puzzle together and the child is moving around the screen and needs to do pattern matching: caterpillar can eat leaves and a mouse can eat cheese. Backed up by playtesting with a broad age range, parents are able to transfer puzzle skills to the child according to de mental development of that child.
Story detectives is a 6 hour prototype. It shows how we work. We make a quick and ugly prototype and user test it immediately
In this game, children see the end of a comic. They need to interview their parents what might have happened to fireman sam. If they ask correctly the corresponding image is shown
This way, chidlren complete the story
The sedond pillar of Lapp is social interaction. When we design games we try to not focus on what is happening on the screen, but we use the screen to elicit social interactions between the players. Conversation starters
Mirror star = karaoke for children with added special effects. Parents can edit the recording in an easy movie-editor and share it with family and friends
And we still face problems: Rups is quite different as one would expect while playing with a tablet. The gesture movements are not in line. Lekker is a super easy mechanic, but the concept of having the device being left on a position, needs explainig. Also the concept of a lobby system is hard for children. Extra technical checks would help but we aren’t there yet. We want to minimize setup times.
Partners as Sesame street struggle with digital distribution. Pepsico loved the concept but want to have it proven.

Lastly, Lapp is good in designing non-conventional serious games. With a PhD in Games and Motivation, Dr. Menno Deen’s thesis is our guide for designing motivational games.
This is the early prototype of Yoganimals (working title) for a pharmaceutical company. It’s a small daily yoga ritual in which children take their medicine. With it we hope to relax the child and create a positive experience around the therapy.
This is VilDu. A game that lowers the boundaries tot talk about sexual abuse. It is now used in therapy sessions. Vildugame.wordrpess.com. Coming Friday we find out if it wins a Dutch Game award. I’t has been co-developed with de Rading.
Last February I started working ath the Game Solutions lab. This doesnt mean Lapp is dead, not at all!
