On February 8th, 2002, Stanley Works announced to reincorporate itself as a Bermuda bases
corporation with main intention to save huge amount of money in corporate income taxes. The
decision had both positive and negative impacts overall. Stanley s market value had jumped $200
million dollars a gain of over 5% the day after they announced the deal. Three months later, on May
10th, they lost $250 million of market value. Corporate inversion is one of the many strategies
companies employ to reduce their tax burden. In other words, a corporate inversion is a process that a

The United States employs a worldwide taxation system accompanied by a complex system of foreign
tax credits. So What the U.S Tax? The United States taxes the worldwide income of its citizens (both
resident and non resident). Accordingly, there is a system of foreign tax credits a partial credit system
that aims to avoid double taxation (Desai, 2005). How the U.S Tax? The FTC system in the US
allocates some expenses, such as interest payments and R D expenses, based on measures of
worldwide activity. Other parts of the tax code apply ratios depending on the circumstances, such as
the allocations for export income 863(b) of the U.S Tax Code. When to Tax? Active income of
incorporated affiliates overseas is taxed only when dividends are remitted. Active income excludes
Subpart F income. And where the U.S. tax? For the most part, the U.S. permits worldwide averaging.
Companies are required to segregate income into basket and perform tax credit calculations on each of
the baskets. The U.S. system creates two classes of firms: excess credit firms who foreign tax rate
exceeds the U.S. statutory rate, and deficit credit firms, whose foreign tax rate is less than the U.S rate.
And some incentive effects created by the U.S system apply to both types of firms and other

Role of Food in Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar
The Bell Jar
Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar is rich with an array of motifs, all which serve to sustain the novel s
primary themes. A motif particularly prevalent within the first half of the novel involves food,
specifically Esther Greenwood s relationship with food. This peculiar relationship corroborates the
book s themes of Esther s continuous rebirthing rituals, and of her extreme dissatisfaction. The
interrelation with food functions in two distinct manners: literally and figuratively. This analysis will
concentrate on the figurative role of food in The Bell Jar, and how it denotes Esther s overall state.
Early on in the novel, Esther establishes her attitude towards food: I m not sure why it is, but I love
food more than just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She describes this peculiar strategy, as seen in the Ladies Day luncheon, While we were standing up
behind our chairs listening to the welcome speech, I had bowed my head and secretly eyed the
position of the bowls of caviar (Plath 26). Esther demonstrates substantial control when dealing with
food, a control that is indubitably absent in her own life.
Perhaps the most memorable incident regarding food in The Bell Jar is the aforementioned Ladies Day
luncheon, which is reminiscent to Esther s rebirthing and purifying bath rituals. Esther gorges herself
during the banquet in attempts to satisfy her starvation, however this binge eventually leads to
purging. Caroline J. Smith notes in The Feeding of Young Women : Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar,
Mademoiselle Magazine, and the Domestic Ideal that purging seems to be the necessary and inevitable
result of [Esther s] disordered eating (16). The purging appears to emulate the same rebirthing and
purification effect Esther feels after a hot bath: I felt purged and holy and ready for a new life (Plath
48). Yet on the following page, Esther is once again starving (Plath 49). This accurately displays her
insatiable hunger; regardless of how much Esther consumes, or how purified she feels, she is never
quite satisfied.
All of The Bell Jar s episodes with food lead to one comprehensive

The Maurya Empire And The Mughal Empire
The two most expansive empires to exist on the subcontinent of India are the Maurya Empire which
dominated ancient India from 322 BCE to 187 BCE and the Mughal Empire which had control from
1526 to 1857 until the British Raj took over. Although these empires existed almost two thousand
years apart, they have a great deal in common including what made them such successful and far
reaching political forces, and maintain differences like what succeeded them after their downfalls. The
Mauryan Empire is considered to be one of the most successful of its time. At its zenith it spanned
nearly 2 million square miles and boasted a population of about 60 million, making it the largest
Indian empire in history and one of the most populated empires of Antiquity. This was not unlike the
Mughal Empire, whose reach was upwards of 1.5 million square miles with a population of over 158
million in 1700. When viewed on a map, the kingdoms are nearly identical in geographical span,
occupying the vast majority of what is now India and Afghanistan. While both dynasties expanded
their empires, the Mauryan dynasty s expansion was far more significant than that of the Mughal
which is better known for unifying kingdoms within the Indian subcontinent after taking control from
the Delhi Sultanate. The most famed ruler of the Maurya Empire was Ashoka who took over the
empire in 272 BCE after the death of his father, Bindusara. He was noted for being a young, powerful
king whose military prowess was

What Is The Role Of Monastic Issues In Preserving Roman...
This historical study will examine the problems of monastic issues in preservation of roman
civilization and the problem of Christian conversions for pagan societies in Europe during the early
Medieval period of Europe. The purpose of European monasteries was to act in accordance with the
Church of Rome s policy to preserve Roman traditions in government and Christian practices in
primarily pagan tribal communities. During this time, the primary writings of St. Benedict define the
purpose of the monastery to spread Christianity as a source of religious power throughout Europe.
More so, the role of monastic culture in Europe society defines the preservation of roman
administration and culture throughout areas considered to be barbaric , such as the German tribal
kingdom along the Rhine that St. Columban describes in the Boat Song. In addition to preserving
Christian society in the Roman Catholic model, the writings of St. Columba define the monastic rules
of the early medieval monastery as a vehicle to promote Roman Catholic cultural values as a
replacement for the polder pagan tribal models found throughout Europe. In essence, the successful
rise of Roman Catholic monasteries in the early medieval period define the problems of preserving
Roman civilization and by converting pagans that monks had to endure within European pagan
culture. The preservation of Roman culture and administration was a crucial problem for monks
during the 5th and 6th centuries throughout Germany

Texas Environmental Regulations
In my opinion we have to have environmental regulations to sustain the environment we have today.
Many people claim that these regulations restrict business which I think is true and so does Melanie J.
Martin in one of her articles she states Businesses may see certain environmental laws in a negative
light if they must adapt their practices and increase spending to comply with regulations. And if a
company is struggling to make it by as it is I don t think they will survive after paying out of pocket to
comply with new regulations. The laws we have in place today in Texas I think get the job done and
their not to extreme.

economy but author Stephen M. Meyer doesn t believe so in his article he states ... anecdotes about ...

Why Is The Use Comradery And Authority In Ordinary Men
As with all historical analysis, it s important to preserve the agency of those who were involved. In
Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning, the argument is posed that due to the complexities of choice
in the Nazi regime, the men involved in the mass murder of the Jewish population did so due to a
perceived inability to liberate oneself. While the circumstances surrounding the men of Reserve Police
Battalion 101 were often constrictive, these men actively served the Nazi regime and lead to the
murder of thousands of people. Inside of the Nazi administration, there were many deep and pervasive
means of making defection and refusal to seem unreachable. Two of the ways most discussed by
Christopher Browning was the use comradery and authority to keep men complicit ... Show more

Christopher Browning cites this as a major reason for compliance in the Police Battalion, where the
refusal to follow orders could lead to repercussion from peers. In some instances, a refusal to follow
orders could be interpreted as being oneself to be above the orders given, therefore better than those
who had complied (CITATION). To refuse orders simply pushed the one person s workload onto the
rest of the group, meaning that they would endure what one was too weak to handle. This sense of
enduring the impossible also was apart of the comradery of the battalion. Inside of this tightly knit
group was also the idea that those who did endure the massacres and murder were stronger and more
manly than those who faltered, reinforcing that behavior to be desirable. (185). An example of this
behavior can be seen in some of the specific violence against women executed outside of orders, such
as Lieutenant Peters who would get drunk, sneak into Jewish homes and assault women (154). This
sort of behavior is grown out of a situation in which violence and heartlessness is the celebrated

Shopping Center At Rayzor Ranch Marketplace
I. Selected Shopping Center Rayzor Ranch Marketplace has a diverse selection of 42 retailers
covering an 800,000 square foot lot. The marketplace was established in Fall of 2010. It is located off
of Highway 380 and University Dr. in Denton, Texas. Having only been around for 5 years the
shopping center appears very contemporary compared to older shopping centers nearby. The parking
lots are clean and trash free and the paint stripes are easily visible. The landscape is very well kept and
there are potted flowers in the gathering areas. Overall the shopping center provides a refreshing look
to the community. II. Location The Rayzor Ranch Marketplace is conveniently located on University
Dr. one of Denton s busiest streets. Located across the street is another shopping center and a total of 3

Feminism In Little Women By Louisa Alcott
Louisa Alcott s novel Little Women is posed during the Civil War. There are four girls: Meg, Jo, Beth,
and Amy. They live with their mother while their father is away fighting in the war. Little Women
displays many themes. However, feminism is one of the important themes displayed. During the Civil
War, women were expected to get married, and while Jo portrays feminism, she gets married in the
end of the novel. This aspect demonstrates that even though someone wants to change the way
something is, it cannot be completely changed because of society s ideals. In Alcott s novel Little
Women, the author uses Jo to demonstrate femininity through the use of dialogue, imagery, and
behavior. Throughout the whole novel, Jo displays her feminist ... Show more content on

And it s worse than ever now, for I m dying to go and fight with Papa. And I can only stay home and
knit, like a poky old woman! (Alcott 9) As you can see, Jo wants to do boy activities, and not always
just knit and be humble. She wants to be adventurous, not prim. And if boys can do whatever they
want shouldn t girls be allowed to do the same? Moreover, Jo reveals her feminist qualities by her self
reliance. Jo is a tomboy. She doesn t always act lady like and likes to fool around. During this time
period in the novel, this was not acceptable. Her father noticed some of these masculine qualities Jo
displayed. That s why before her father left for war he made her the man of the family. As it states in
the novel, I m the man of the family now Papa is away, and I shall provide the slippers, for he told me
to take special care of Mother while he was gone. (Alcott 11) Throughout the novel, Jo continued to
show the manly qualities. During chapter twenty seven, Alcott describes Jo s femininity through
imagery. As it states, Jo enjoyed a taste of this satisfaction, and ceased to envy richer girls, taking
great comfort in the knowledge that she could supply her own wants, and need ask no one for a penny.
(Alcott 294) Although Jo wishes to be rich because everything would be easier, she knows that she has
to work for what she wants, and she ll ask no one help. This imagery shows Jo s independence and
how she doesn t need to rely on anyone.

What Is My Room Essay
My Room Everyone likes places they can go to, to let be in a safe place. Mine may not be the prettiest,
coolest, or most perfect by any means. For me it works the best when I need breaks from my life and
just relax, this is where I go to. It frees me from all the chaos in my life, and I can just let go of things
that are worrying me or things I don t need to be in my life. My safe place is my room, my go to friend
when I need one, I can always rely on my lovely room. Most rooms fit to people s personality and
what they think is the best for them. I was searching ideas on how to recreate my room, and I finally
found the best theme for me and how it fit my personality. The room contains four walls, that are
joined together, in a rectangle shape. My room is the biggest one in the house, no not because I wanted
this room, but because I shared it with my older sister. No the room is all mine. Two the walls that are
opposite of each other are painted Peppered Pecan which is a brown color, that I love so dearly. The
other two walls are painted just plain white. If dressers could talk they would tell me how much they
love the color they are painted. Distressed, with brown as the base coat, and an off white at the top,
then sanded, to make the old fashion look to them. There knobs are brassy which stands out, from the
off white. Plants just bring a happy vibe to people, which this plant does to me, with its rough stem

1932 Social Melodrama I Was Born But Analysis
In Yasijuro Ozu s 1932 social melodrama, I Was Born But..., it s use of mise en scene works well to
describe the characters lives at home, as well as the tone of an economically depressed Japan. As a
slice of life movie, one scene stands out between separating Yoshi, the father, and his co workers.
While the camera pans across an office of yawning workers, Yoshi is patiently waiting at his desk for
something, like being called into his boss office. During his discussion with Mr. Iwasaki, his co
workers criticize him for kissing up to the boss, by moving into the suburbs. Following this
conversation, the camera slides the other way, showing all of the office employees busy at their desk,
before abruptly cutting to the children in school doing the same thing. In this scene Ozu does a very
good job of showing the similarities between the children and the adults that work every day they do.

Yoshi s wife stays at home as a housewife, while his children go to school for an education. Because
the movie wants to emphasize its relatability to the public at the time, it is not very dramatic and has
very simple camera angle and cuts. Most people have similar looks, children all in school wear
uniforms, and the men wear suits and ties. Only three certain characters have distinct works, the
teacher, who is very clean cut and put together much better than the salarymen. And Mr. Iwasaki, who
is covered in film and smoking a cigar, while his employees outside are smoking on their own rolled
cigarettes. Ozu had made the appearance of Mr. Iwasaki something less professional because he was
intended to be a relatable character, like Yoshi, but to still separate them monetarily. Mr. Iwasaki is a
professional man in a position of power, he can afford to have a film hobby, smoke cigars, and to be

A Brief Note On The Second World War
Project HERS
The Second World War began four years ago, with Adolf Hitler s Holocaust starting but two years into
it. Under his regime, anti Semitism was and still is the law no man, woman, and child of lesser Aryan
blood can live, and his reasons for the persecution of such people are still widely debated. However,
there is a possible solution: Sigmund Freud and his theories. One of his theories suggests a division of
the human psyche into three parts: the superego, ego, and id. These Freudian terms and their functions
form the basis of the project HERS.
To understand HERS, you must be acquainted with a condition linked directly to it, Dissociative
Identity Disorder. DID is present and latent in every individual from the day they are ... Show more

To make a moot point, it is even debatable whether HERS is a hereditary condition or not.
The only other explanation for Hitler s reasons behind the Holocaust, other than the stab in the back
myth , is that he is a HERS acting under the influence of his id. Where there is dislike and revulsion,
the id fans the flames into those of hatred. Where there is pride, the id makes it unquenchable and
unreasonable. To win this war, the Allies need to break one of the links in the Axis military alliance
Germany and its dictator, Adolf Hitler.

Nathanial Hawthorne s Rappaccinis Daughter
The work I chose to write about is Hawthorne s Rappaccinis Daughter. I first want to start off by
noting that Nathanial Hawthorne is one of the most known novelists of the romanticism movement in
American Literature. One example of romanticism is the idea of the individual presenting as more
important than society. Doctor Rappaccini conducted a deadly experiment with his daughter, Beatrice.
He tells Beatrice that he did everything to make her into a super human being, but eventually it
becomes rather apparent that she was just a part of an extravagant experiment rather than a daughter
he loved.
Another aspect of romanticism that occurred in this story is the fact of nature being used to reveal
truth. The plants in the garden present

Machiavelli s Republic
State Structure
Simply put, for democracy to exist the state must be accordingly structured with principles of
democracy. The key distinction between democracies and republics is within the limits placed on the
state by the law, especially with concern for minority rights. Both systems generally use
representational voting that often takes place in legislatures/parliaments. In a republic, a constitution
will guarantee protection for individual rights that cannot be restrained by the government. By
contrast, in a pure democracy the majority cannot be restrained in this manner and may, in fact, force
its ideals on the minority. The most successful and ideal type representational republic is that of the
Romans, which Machiavelli holds to a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These policies can be useful for future republics by also reducing them to their origins. Without
constant renovation, they would not be able to last. Reverting to original principles is only possible
through either external events or according to their own intrinsic good sense (III I). Thus for
Machiavelli, comparing a states modern affairs with that of its ancient is the best means by which to
draw political knowledge from them. True political liberty could only come from a rehabilitation of
states standards. Because a republic is intended to preserve liberty and use it to promote general
wellbeing, it is critical to regain freedom as soon as possible. Desperate times such as war, natural
disasters, etc. always lead to a degree of degeneration, and so it is critical to adjust the government and
its policies in order to regain what has been lost (I I, II). Ultimately, the structure of the Roman
republic and Machiavelli s favorability of it is what distinguishes his true republican nature. As he
advocates for a distribution of power rather than for it to be wholly vested in the people, it can be
discerned that modeling a state after a Republic is the superior means by which to

The Pros And Cons Of Alcohol Advertisements
Many entrepreneur s objectives are to grab the people s attention to focus on their product or
understand the reasoning why they promote it in that way. People get different messages throughout
the advertisement that is promoted. These people tend to go after what society goes after. If the
product is not on trend, then it must have a creative slogan for the society, so they have something to
focus. This is all based on the ethos, pathos, and logos that the creators focused on, so their message
could be reached out. As an example, the first advertisement of Budweiser consists of animals. Ethos
represents credibility or an ethical appeal which involves persuasion by the character involved, ( ).
The purpose of this advertisement is to buy beer with a companion. These entrepreneurs made their
clip specifically for those who are into drinking beer. Since a small scene concluded of a celebratory
for the recovery of a missing dog, teens have a higher risk of being tempted into wanting to drink.
This can mislead to a negative effect on alcohol advertisements which many teenagers are more eager
to do. Then these entrepreneurs assure themselves that it is believable for things to get uncontrolled as
well as following along with the pathos. It has a way of convincing people with an argument drawn
out through an emotional response ( ). Humans fall in love with animals while others don t.

Similarities Between Thomas Jefferson And Slavery
Thomas Jefferson and Slavery
Thomas Jefferson had written in the Declaration of Independence that, all men are created equal. Also,
every man has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In addition, several enlightenment
thinkers in Europe believed in natural law, human progress, and a government made for the people, all
of whom inspired Jefferson. Despite this, in 1716, 500,000 African slaves were kept in the Americas,
and Jefferson was one of these people that owned slaves.
Slavery was legal in all states until 1777, when Vermont outlawed it. Six years later, Massachusetts
followed. New Hampshire removed it from their constitutional interpretation. After this, Pennsylvania,
Rhode Island, and Connecticut adopted gradual emancipation programs, meaning they gradually freed
slaves, ending it in these states. Finally, New York and New Jersey freed their slaves, leaving the
southern colonies remaining. While some people did free their slaves in the south, many did not. This
is because they heavily relied on them, not just for work, but for their status. It was woven in their
lives to the point where it was a representation of the slave owner s wealth. Jefferson hated slavery, to
the point where he made a plan to remove it in Virginia, which ended up failing. He was in a large
amount of debt at the time, so he didn t believe he could free his own slaves while he was still alive.
Thomas Jefferson had a close relationship with a slave named Sally Hemings, which was very
controversial and considered shameful at the time. James Callender said that Jefferson had fathered
several children from one of his slaves, which didn t get credit until Fawn M. Brodie published a book
in 1974 called, Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History, where she portrayed the relationship between
Jefferson and Hemings. While most versions showed their relationship as shameful and scandalous,
she made it look like they were a happy couple, as if he fell in love with her and married when she
was 14. Others do not think this way because Jefferson was very protective of his social life, going to
extreme measures to hide it. This makes some people believe he was trying to hide something. Some
are not sure if authorities would

John Stuart Mill And Aristotle
John Stuart Mill and Aristotle both address the idea of happiness as the goal of human life. They
explain that all human action is at the foundation of their moral theories. Mill addresses the Greatest
Happiness Principle, which is the greatest amount of pleasure to the least amount of pain. Similarly,
Aristotle addresses happiness through the idea of eudaimonia and human flourishing. According to
Aristotle, eudaimonia is happiness, it is the state of contemplation that individuals are in when they
have reached actualized happiness. Also referred to as happiness or human flourishing, it is the
ultimate goal of human beings. Happiness is living well and acting well. He explains that once general
happiness becomes recognized as the moral standard, natural sentiment will nurture feelings that
promote utilitarianism. According to Aristotle, happiness is a state of being. Both Mill and Aristotle
agree that in order to attain true happiness, human beings must engage in activities that are distinct to
humans and that make them happy. Aristotle s idea of eudaimonia and human flourishing is a more
compelling argument than Mill s for happiness and the final end because Aristotle explains that the
virtues bring human beings to happiness.
Aristotle believes that happiness is an activity in accord with virtue. Happiness is in accord with the
most excellent virtue. All men agreed that happiness is to live well , but Aristotle expands this further
into a whole

Siddharth Gaining Self Empowerment Through Experiences
Gaining Self Empowerment Through Experiences Reality to most people means the world and the
state of things as they actually exist, however for the purpose of this essay reality means experience,
more specifically knowledge through experience and how students in high school can acquire it in the
form of self empowerment. Self empowerment is taking control of one s own life, knowing their limits
and learning from their mistakes. Siddhartha rejected the teachings of the Buddha in order to gain
knowledge through experiences, Siddhartha lost himself and made mistakes in his quest for getting
enlightened but found retribution by realizing his mistakes, learning from them and making a change.
From Hume s philosophy it is understood that there are two types of knowledge, knowledge of the
world, which is subjective to a person s experience and prior knowledge which is knowledge of
relations of ideas that cannot be experienced such as mathematics. Although students have prior
knowledge such as mathematics, knowledge of the world comes from experience and students need
experience in order to gain self empowerment and achieve success.
Students need to learn how to take charge of their lives. Students must gain experiences from an early
age and while they are in school, so they can be further prepared for life after high school. Subjects
such as mathematics and history and essentials like PowerPoints, worksheets and information given to

Security Vulnerability Of A Computer System
Introduction
Vulnerability is a weakness which helps an attacker to decease a system s information. The security
professionals have to be aware of these threats and keep up to date with all the latest threats and issues
because if they do not have to be aware of these threats so there could be a great loss to an

Manipulation Of Digital Photography And Fashion Photography
The aim of this research project is to look at Manipulation in Digital Photography and in Fashion
Photography, before and after Adobe Photoshop was invented. The term Photoshop is commonly used
as expression to denote the manipulation of images and will be used in this context throughout this
research project. Photoshop is one of the biggest known software used to edit photographs and as such
plays a vital role in photography. Over the years Photoshop has changed drastically and this study will
look at the reasons that have contributed to the evolvment of this particular editing software. There
will also be further exploration into how far Digital Photography and Fashion Photography go into
manipulating their images. So, what is Digital Photography? Digital photography is The art and
science of producing and manipulating photographs photographs that are represented as bit maps.
(Beal, 2015) Digital photos can be produced in number of different ways such as: by taking an actual
picture using a Digital Camera, and by scanning in any printed photographic images. Once the
photograph is digital it turns into digital format such as JPEG or RAW format; this is when the
pictures can be edited using software such as Photoshop. People who may not be as adept and
competent in the art of photography often rely on such softwares, when taking a good picture, as a
mean to edit their picture to make it appear more professional. An example of this could be defined as

Case Study Of Pick N Pay And Woolworths
Chapter 4
Introduction:
This section displays the exploration discoveries to the research on the impact of foreign exchange
fluctuations on a business financial position and ability to invest. The examination was directed at 2

direct relations with foreign currency within their respective companies. These companies were
presented with a survey which appear in the reference and appendix D. Out of the 2 respondents, 2

The Threat of Global Warming May Lead to Global Cooling Essay
Over the last few years almost everyone has heard that the earth is warming. Also, almost everyone
has heard the pleas to go green and reduce carbon emissions, led by former Vice President Al Gore.
Even though there is not a truly accurate definition of global warming it can be roughly defined as a
rise in average global temperature according to Laurence Pringle s book Global Warming Assessing
the Greenhouse Threat (19). Global Warming Assessing the Greenhouse Threat also bring up that the
average temperature data that scientist are using only goes back to 1860 giving scientists today only
150 years of temperature data. Also, with this current warming, even with humans contributing to the

Picture this, some years from now winters will be exceptionally harsh in the Northern Hemisphere.
Crops that were grown in the northern United States, southern Canada, and the northern countries in
Europe are unable to grow any more. Also, glaciers that had been receding in the warm period of the
late 1990s and throughout the 2000s grow and push in to areas that had become habitable during the
warm period. If one thinks this is fiction, it has happened before. The last time that a little ice age
occurred it began around 1350 and lasted until the late 19th century. Also, this little ice age was
preceded by a warm period with similar temperature patterns as today s warming trends. Most of this
data has been gathered from sediment samples from Bermuda and ice core samples from Greenland (

During the Medieval time from the years 700 to 1300 there was very warm time in the history of the
world. This time is referred to as the Medieval Warm Period or the Medieval Climatic Optimum (
Earth s Climate History ). This period is believed to have peaked around the year 1100. The climate
was considerably warmer and milder than it was before this time period. With this climate change
food was able to be grown in many areas where they were previously not grown. Some examples of
this are grapes being grown in southern England, and cereal crops successfully being cultivated in
Iceland ( Earth s Climate History ). Also, much of the

My Life In My Senior Year Of High School
One event that was lifechanging for me was my senior year of high school I decided to be a part of the
Every 15 Minutes Program. This was a two day program that included juniors and seniors to help
prevent their peers from drinking and driving on the night of Prom. On the first day of this program,
every fifteen minutes that passed on the clock, the intercom would come on throughout the entire
school to announce that someone had died . This announcement would start with an introduction that
read, Every fifteen minutes someone dies due to a drinking and driving accident and then they would
say the name of the individual who has just died. After this took place, the grim reaper would go into
the classroom, in which the student who had died , and he would state a beautiful introduction of that
individual. The student would then put on a black and white mask and go into a classroom and hide
out there for the rest of the school day. In the afternoon of the first day, the students who were apart of
the Every Fifteen Minutes Program, including myself, reenacted the accident for the juniors and
seniors down at the football field. Before everyone came out to watch the reenactment, the three other
students involved in the car accident and myself had to put fake, sticky, red blood on our faces, hands,
and arms to make it look like we were actually hurt and bleeding from the car accident. Then the four
of us had to get into a wrecked, crushed up car that the school brought in from

Two Major Components Of Lactate Dehydrogenase In Biology
Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme that is found in most living organisms which catalyzes the
conversion of lactate to pyruvic acid. It converts NAD+ to NADH and back again. Pyruvate is
converted to lactate when oxygen isn t present and the reverse reaction takes place (Wikipedia). There
are two major subunits of lactate dehydrogenase which are the M form and the H form. The M form,
major subunit in muscles, is efficient in the conversion of pyruvate to lactate. The H form, major
subunit in the heart, is efficient in the conversion of lactate to pyruvate. Despite the differences in
structure of the M and H form, there s enough similarity for hybrids of the M and H form to form
(Goodsell).
The oxidization of lactate requires the binding of NAD+ to the enzyme first before lactate. A hydride
ion is rapidly transferred in either direction yielding a mixture of the two teranary complexes, enzyme
NAD+ lactate and enzyme NADH pyruvate. The dissociation of pyruvate from the enzyme followed
by NADH takes place. The rate of dissociation of NADH is the rate limiting step. This remains valid
in the reverse reaction as the binding of NADH takes place first and then the substrate, pyruvate, is
able to bind (Busby). The reverse reaction of pyruvate to lactate is the thermodynamically favored
reaction. When oxygen is insufficient, it s purpose is to restore NAD+ to allow glycolysis to continue
without stopping (Aalto). Although this reaction has a Gibbs Free energy value is 200kJ/mol, 93%

Great Pacific Garbage Patch
For my service event, I attended a beach cleanup event in Indianola, which is in Kitsap County. When
I arrived, I met with twenty other participants and received instructions from a local community
member. We were given gloves, large orange plastic bags, smaller plastic bags, and flags. The larger
bags were for the garbage we collected, the smaller bags were for recyclable items (such as aluminum
cans and glass bottles), and the flags were for needles and similar items that we could not collected
safely. We divided into two group and headed in opposite directions up the beach to collect all the

However, beyond that, this is a subject that is of great importance to me. My long term goal is to
become a marine biologist and as such the health of the ocean is of the utmost importance to me. Over
the last few years I have chosen to research and write about environmental issue. One of the main
issues I researched was the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and how plastics in the ocean affect marine
life. Because of that, I understand the true impact that any debris, and particularly plastics, have in the
ocean. They entangle animals, hinder their digestion, and transport of invasive species, to name just
some examples. For these reasons, I believe that preventing debris from entering the ocean is
paramount. I realize that participating in one beach cleanup is not going to save the ocean and the real
problem lies in how humanity is using plastics. However, I want to help contributions the wellbeing of
the ocean. Ultimately, that is why I participated in a beach cleanup event. Furthermore, Indianola is
close to my home, so I was not only benefitting the ocean, but my local community as well. While I

Hippie Movement Research Paper
The definition of a Hippie is: a person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair and
wearing beads, associated with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the
taking of hallucinogenic drugs. The Hippie Movement began in the 1960 s with the height of the
movement being in 1967. This movement was a result of people feeling alienated from the middle
class society or rejecting it, as well as the critical historical events like the Vietnam War. The origins
had its start in San Francisco, California and slowly made its way across America. The term hippie
originally derived from the term hipster and was used nationally and internationally by mass media as

Public gathering, music festivals, and protests were all important to the movement. The Hippie
movement only comprised 10% of youth , but the fact that the culture was so strange allowed it to
gain a lot of media coverage. The biggest issues society had with the hippies were their public
protests, meetings and discussions that would flood the streets. The hippie scene on Haight Street in
San Francisco attracted photographers, reporters, and opportunists. The first large congregations of
Hippies that was noticed by media was the Summer of Love . The Summer of Love was a social
phenomenon that occurred during the summer of 1967, when as many as 100,000 people crowded San
Francisco s neighborhood Haight Ashbury. College and high school students found their way into
Haight Ashbury for spring break, but by the time summer came around local government officials
tried to stop the influx of young. These efforts brought even more attention to the scene, and articles in
local papers alerted the national media to the hippies growing numbers. Haight Ashbury residents even
gave the occurrence its name. The media s reportage included other cultural events in California, such
as the Fantasy Fair, Magic Mountain Music Festival and the Monterey Pop Festival, both of which
happened in June of 1967. The Woodstock music festival came two years after the Summer of Love
phenomenon but still brought in close to half a

A Society of Oppression in A Handmaid s Tale
As the saying goes, history repeats itself. If one of the goals of Margaret Atwood was to prove this
particular point, she certainly succeeded in her novel A Handmaid s Tale. In her Note to the Reader,
she writes, The thing to remember is that there is nothing new about the society depicted in The
Handmaiden s Tale except the time and place. All of the things I have written about ...have been done

Once the oppressed group is demoted to it, or property, freedoms can be taken away. Property cannot
read or write for example, or leave their respective grounds a plantation in the case of slaves, or the
Center in the case of the Handmaids without an escort or master. Segregation is also an issue, as
blacks could not sit with the whites at church or eat at the same dinner table, the Handmaids were not
permitted to sit with the Wives at assemblies or eat at their banquet tables. In addition, a Handmaid
does not have any claim on her own child, who belongs to her masters, the Commander, and his wife,
just as a slave mother would have no right to keep her child from her master if he wished to sell it.
Finally, there is the renting of women to men, not unlike the renting of slaves to farmers, as property
of the owner (of course the rent money does not go to the worker; what could an it need with such a
human invention?). As the Commander demonstrates to Offred when she enters the bordello, He slips

Personal Narrative Of My Life
Personal Narrative One day in mid November, I thought that one of the worst days in my life had
come. I walked into my parent s room, and I found my mother rushing to gather things to go
somewhere. Curiously, I asked my mom where she was going, and why she was in such a rush. My
mom said, Julia was in a bad car accident on the way home from school and is headed to the hospital.
I m going up there to see if there is anything I can do to help. Immediately many questions came to
my mind, but I knew that it would be best to not ask until she was sure of the answers and had more
information. Julia was family to me, but not my blood. I have known her since I was born, and she has
always been around since. Her Aunt is my mother s best friend as well as my Godmother. She has
known Julia s family for over 30 years. I wasn t as close to Julia as I would ve liked to be, but I still
knew her very well. She was only 17 years old and it was her Senior year in high school. Since my
mom is a Pediatric nurse at Baptist, it was no surprise to me that my mom was going there to help. I
told her to update me as soon as she found out anything. After my mom left to go to the hospital, I sat
on the couch anxiously waiting for any information from her. Eventually my mom texted me saying
that she was in critical condition and in a coma. She also said that she had to be on a ventilator and
wasn t responding to anything. With that information, I knew that this was something very serious and

I Am Legend
The movie I am Legend is a great movie. I really enjoy I am Legend because it is a story about Robert
Neville (Will Smith) and his dog Samantha, a German shepherd, surviving in a zombie apocalypse in
the heart of New York City. Now these are not your normal zombies they are more or less just
infected, but they cannot go into sunlight because it burns their skin very quickly. They are infected
with a virus that started out having the ability to cure cancer, but then later mutated the host into these
zombie like creature that are stronger, faster, and all senses increased from a human.

solutions on infected rats, and he found one that made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That night the infected find their way to Robert s house, they start to attack and get inside. Robert,

infected that he captured. The infected he capture was not infected anymore and was slowly becoming
human again, but the other infected started beating on the glass trying to break their way into the
room. So Robert takes a blood sample, which has the cure in it, of the captured infected gives it to
Anna and Ethan. He then locks them in a smaller emergency locker, and tells them to get the cure to
other scientists and fix it all. He then shuts the door and pulls a grenade out of a desk drawer. Looking
at all the infected in the room he pulls the pin and opens the door ending his life and killing all the
infected in the area. Anna and Ethan then find their way to other people and scientists and were able to
save the world because of the work of Robert Neville. In my opinion, the movie I am Legend is a
fantastic movie for many reasons being from plot, to characters, and to the producer. The plot was
based on a 1954 horror book I am Legend by Richard Matheson. This story is what he is most well
known for and made him popular. Richard had many great works and those got him the chance to
write sixteen episodes for the popular television show The Twilight Zone. This television show aired
from 1959 to 1964 with five seasons and 156 episodes. Making the book into a movie shows that it
was a good enough story to get to

Analysis Of Bruce Wayne s Batman Essay
In Batman: Ego, Bruce Wayne struggles to fight his inner demons. These demons take on the shape of
Batman and lead to a power struggle with Bruce Wayne. Wayne fights to hold on to what he believes
in and show the world the true meaning of the Batman costume. This fight categorizes not only Wayne
s character but also the character of Batman. The comic pushes the characters into stereotypical roles
of what a hero and a villain are. Initially, Bruce Wayne is presented as the canon good guy or the hero,
while Batman is presented as the stereotypical bad guy . This representation is achieved by the comic
through its use of details. Due to the illusion of light and the use of colors, Batman: Ego represents
Bruce Wayne s character as a being of purity and innocence and represents Batman as a being of evil
and darkness.
Batman: Ego uses the illusion of light to portray Bruce Wayne s character in a positive way and the
character of Batman in a negative way. Every time Bruce Wayne is shown in one of the comic panels,
a beam of light is shown over his face or behind him. No matter the background of the comic, Wayne
is always clearly visible as if a beam of light is constantly aimed at him. By doing this, the comic is
setting Wayne up as a symbol of purity and light. Wayne is like a beacon of hope who strongly
contrasts with the dark reality that is Gotham. This use of light is most clearly seen in a panel on page
54. Within this panel, Wayne stands in the shadow of the villainous

Sir Richard Branson s Leadership Styles
The success of an organisation is determined many different elements such their vision, goals and
someone who is able to lead others and inspire them to work. A leader is a person who has the ability
to influence other people by setting examples through their own accomplishments; and become a role

The Heroine in A White Heron Essay
A White Heron was a beautiful story of the battles within a little girl in her
formative years in life. The story has a deeper meaning though, expressed in the
involvement of much symbolic representation. The author, Sarah Orne Jewett, paints a
vivid and descriptive image of the young heroine and her surroundings in the story.
I will try to primarily focus on the symbolism and representation in the story. I will also
mention the subtle references the artist made to the biggest struggle in a young persons
life self identification.
Sarah Jewett seemed to start the story off to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This showed how much diction and speech alone establishes
much of the story base within itself.
Much of the story was given to personification of nature. Nature being so
close and dear to her was primarily expressed in her affection for the cow and the birds.
The author practically made the large tree in the story come alive. One statement says,
...the sharp dry twigs caught and held her and scratched her like angry talons, the pitch
made her thin little fingers clumsy and stiff as she went round and round the tree s great
stem, higher and higher upward (SOJ pg.436). The description and life she brings to the
story makes the narrative very interesting and readable.
The next chapter in the story becomes very fluid and poetic. One prose states,
Half a mile from home, at the farthest edge of the woods, where the land was highest, a
great pine tree stood... (SOJ pg. 435). As the story begins to smooth out, it enters into a
spirit of representation. A man who wishes to dominate and destroy all that Sylvia holds
dear, enters her life as a desired lover. The romantic prose and ideas in the story illustrate
even better what the author is feeling about the gray eyed child . One verse states, The
woman s heart, asleep in the child, was vaguely thrilled

The Aspects Of Gender Roles In The Return Of Martin Guerre
Throughout history, our society has created gender norms that are followed consistently by members
of communities. Though they differ from place to place, we recognize trends that seem almost
prescribed to certain genders. Specifically, in the 1600s, men and women had explicit roles that were
designated by people of stature. These expectations were followed loyally and people who failed to
follow suit were shunned or sometimes even suffered seriously punishment including crude public
beatings that were mot only pain inflicting but also status damaging (Rocke, Gender and Sexual
Culture, 159). Looking deeper into the novel The Return of Martin Guerre, we identify from the start
the expectations that are in place and how they play a role in the story. In comparison of Characters,
taking into consideration the standard that had been set for men of this era, we notice that Pansette
(Arnaud du Tilh) is an almost faultless example of what is expected for men and in contrast, Martin
Guerre fails to meet these standards. First, some background on what was expected of men at this
time. Natalie Zemon Davis describes expectancies of men through a number of instances in Martin
Guerre s life. Men had large roles to fulfill both in their households and in the community. At home,
the male was considered the lord of the household and was expected to provide for the family. In the
article Manhood, Patriarchy, and Gender, Alexandra Shepard illustrates manhood as being in control,

  • 2. STanley Essay On February 8th, 2002, Stanley Works announced to reincorporate itself as a Bermuda bases corporation with main intention to save huge amount of money in corporate income taxes. The decision had both positive and negative impacts overall. Stanley s market value had jumped $200 million dollars a gain of over 5% the day after they announced the deal. Three months later, on May 10th, they lost $250 million of market value. Corporate inversion is one of the many strategies companies employ to reduce their tax burden. In other words, a corporate inversion is a process that a company undergoes to change the domicile of the U.S. parent corporation in a multinational corporate conglomerate to a country other than the United States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The United States employs a worldwide taxation system accompanied by a complex system of foreign tax credits. So What the U.S Tax? The United States taxes the worldwide income of its citizens (both resident and non resident). Accordingly, there is a system of foreign tax credits a partial credit system that aims to avoid double taxation (Desai, 2005). How the U.S Tax? The FTC system in the US allocates some expenses, such as interest payments and R D expenses, based on measures of worldwide activity. Other parts of the tax code apply ratios depending on the circumstances, such as the allocations for export income 863(b) of the U.S Tax Code. When to Tax? Active income of incorporated affiliates overseas is taxed only when dividends are remitted. Active income excludes Subpart F income. And where the U.S. tax? For the most part, the U.S. permits worldwide averaging. Companies are required to segregate income into basket and perform tax credit calculations on each of the baskets. The U.S. system creates two classes of firms: excess credit firms who foreign tax rate exceeds the U.S. statutory rate, and deficit credit firms, whose foreign tax rate is less than the U.S rate. • 3. Role of Food in Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar The Bell Jar Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar is rich with an array of motifs, all which serve to sustain the novel s primary themes. A motif particularly prevalent within the first half of the novel involves food, specifically Esther Greenwood s relationship with food. This peculiar relationship corroborates the book s themes of Esther s continuous rebirthing rituals, and of her extreme dissatisfaction. The interrelation with food functions in two distinct manners: literally and figuratively. This analysis will concentrate on the figurative role of food in The Bell Jar, and how it denotes Esther s overall state. Early on in the novel, Esther establishes her attitude towards food: I m not sure why it is, but I love food more than just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She describes this peculiar strategy, as seen in the Ladies Day luncheon, While we were standing up behind our chairs listening to the welcome speech, I had bowed my head and secretly eyed the position of the bowls of caviar (Plath 26). Esther demonstrates substantial control when dealing with food, a control that is indubitably absent in her own life. Perhaps the most memorable incident regarding food in The Bell Jar is the aforementioned Ladies Day luncheon, which is reminiscent to Esther s rebirthing and purifying bath rituals. Esther gorges herself during the banquet in attempts to satisfy her starvation, however this binge eventually leads to purging. Caroline J. Smith notes in The Feeding of Young Women : Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar, Mademoiselle Magazine, and the Domestic Ideal that purging seems to be the necessary and inevitable result of [Esther s] disordered eating (16). The purging appears to emulate the same rebirthing and purification effect Esther feels after a hot bath: I felt purged and holy and ready for a new life (Plath 48). Yet on the following page, Esther is once again starving (Plath 49). This accurately displays her insatiable hunger; regardless of how much Esther consumes, or how purified she feels, she is never quite satisfied. All of The Bell Jar s episodes with food lead to one comprehensive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Maurya Empire And The Mughal Empire The two most expansive empires to exist on the subcontinent of India are the Maurya Empire which dominated ancient India from 322 BCE to 187 BCE and the Mughal Empire which had control from 1526 to 1857 until the British Raj took over. Although these empires existed almost two thousand years apart, they have a great deal in common including what made them such successful and far reaching political forces, and maintain differences like what succeeded them after their downfalls. The Mauryan Empire is considered to be one of the most successful of its time. At its zenith it spanned nearly 2 million square miles and boasted a population of about 60 million, making it the largest Indian empire in history and one of the most populated empires of Antiquity. This was not unlike the Mughal Empire, whose reach was upwards of 1.5 million square miles with a population of over 158 million in 1700. When viewed on a map, the kingdoms are nearly identical in geographical span, occupying the vast majority of what is now India and Afghanistan. While both dynasties expanded their empires, the Mauryan dynasty s expansion was far more significant than that of the Mughal which is better known for unifying kingdoms within the Indian subcontinent after taking control from the Delhi Sultanate. The most famed ruler of the Maurya Empire was Ashoka who took over the empire in 272 BCE after the death of his father, Bindusara. • 6. What Is The Role Of Monastic Issues In Preserving Roman... This historical study will examine the problems of monastic issues in preservation of roman civilization and the problem of Christian conversions for pagan societies in Europe during the early Medieval period of Europe. The purpose of European monasteries was to act in accordance with the Church of Rome s policy to preserve Roman traditions in government and Christian practices in primarily pagan tribal communities. During this time, the primary writings of St. Benedict define the purpose of the monastery to spread Christianity as a source of religious power throughout Europe. More so, the role of monastic culture in Europe society defines the preservation of roman administration and culture throughout areas considered to be barbaric , such as the German tribal kingdom along the Rhine that St. Columban describes in the Boat Song. In addition to preserving Christian society in the Roman Catholic model, the writings of St. Columba define the monastic rules of the early medieval monastery as a vehicle to promote Roman Catholic cultural values as a replacement for the polder pagan tribal models found throughout Europe. Many people claim that these regulations restrict business which I think is true and so does Melanie J. • 8. Why Is The Use Comradery And Authority In Ordinary Men As with all historical analysis, it s important to preserve the agency of those who were involved. In Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning, the argument is posed that due to the complexities of choice in the Nazi regime, the men involved in the mass murder of the Jewish population did so due to a perceived inability to liberate oneself. While the circumstances surrounding the men of Reserve Police Battalion 101 were often constrictive, these men actively served the Nazi regime and lead to the murder of thousands of people. Inside of the Nazi administration, there were many deep and pervasive means of making defection and refusal to seem unreachable. Two of the ways most discussed by Christopher Browning was the use comradery and authority to keep men complicit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Christopher Browning cites this as a major reason for compliance in the Police Battalion, where the refusal to follow orders could lead to repercussion from peers. In some instances, a refusal to follow orders could be interpreted as being oneself to be above the orders given, therefore better than those who had complied (CITATION). To refuse orders simply pushed the one person s workload onto the rest of the group, meaning that they would endure what one was too weak to handle. This sense of enduring the impossible also was apart of the comradery of the battalion. Inside of this tightly knit group was also the idea that those who did endure the massacres and murder were stronger and more manly than those who faltered, reinforcing that behavior to be desirable. (185). An example of this behavior can be seen in some of the specific violence against women executed outside of orders, such as Lieutenant Peters who would get drunk, sneak into Jewish homes and assault women (154). And if boys can do whatever they want shouldn t girls be allowed to do the same? Moreover, Jo reveals her feminist qualities by her self reliance. Jo is a tomboy. She doesn t always act lady like and likes to fool around. During this time period in the novel, this was not acceptable. Her father noticed some of these masculine qualities Jo displayed. It frees me from all the chaos in my life, and I can just let go of things that are worrying me or things I don t need to be in my life. My safe place is my room, my go to friend when I need one, I can always rely on my lovely room. Most rooms fit to people s personality and what they think is the best for them. I was searching ideas on how to recreate my room, and I finally found the best theme for me and how it fit my personality. As a slice of life movie, one scene stands out between separating Yoshi, the father, and his co workers. While the camera pans across an office of yawning workers, Yoshi is patiently waiting at his desk for something, like being called into his boss office. During his discussion with Mr. Iwasaki, his co workers criticize him for kissing up to the boss, by moving into the suburbs. Following this conversation, the camera slides the other way, showing all of the office employees busy at their desk, before abruptly cutting to the children in school doing the same thing. Under his regime, anti Semitism was and still is the law no man, woman, and child of lesser Aryan blood can live, and his reasons for the persecution of such people are still widely debated. However, there is a possible solution: Sigmund Freud and his theories. One of his theories suggests a division of the human psyche into three parts: the superego, ego, and id. Where there is dislike and revulsion, the id fans the flames into those of hatred. Where there is pride, the id makes it unquenchable and unreasonable. To win this war, the Allies need to break one of the links in the Axis military alliance Germany and its dictator, Adolf Hitler. Dr. Foothills Freed, Allies Scientist November 3, 1943 All that was planned came to fruition today. The village of Imber on the Salisbury Plain was evacuated yesterday to be used as a training site for the British. The children, still in their seats when the evacuation was conducted, were swept away to Palmyra Atoll as planned. • 15. Nathanial Hawthorne s Rappaccinis Daughter The work I chose to write about is Hawthorne s Rappaccinis Daughter. I first want to start off by noting that Nathanial Hawthorne is one of the most known novelists of the romanticism movement in American Literature. One example of romanticism is the idea of the individual presenting as more important than society. Doctor Rappaccini conducted a deadly experiment with his daughter, Beatrice. He tells Beatrice that he did everything to make her into a super human being, but eventually it becomes rather apparent that she was just a part of an extravagant experiment rather than a daughter he loved. Another aspect of romanticism that occurred in this story is the fact of nature being used to reveal truth. The plants in the garden present ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Machiavelli s Republic State Structure Simply put, for democracy to exist the state must be accordingly structured with principles of democracy. The key distinction between democracies and republics is within the limits placed on the state by the law, especially with concern for minority rights. Both systems generally use representational voting that often takes place in legislatures/parliaments. In a republic, a constitution will guarantee protection for individual rights that cannot be restrained by the government. By contrast, in a pure democracy the majority cannot be restrained in this manner and may, in fact, force its ideals on the minority. The most successful and ideal type representational republic is that of the Romans, which Machiavelli holds to a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These policies can be useful for future republics by also reducing them to their origins. Without constant renovation, they would not be able to last. Reverting to original principles is only possible through either external events or according to their own intrinsic good sense (III I). Thus for Machiavelli, comparing a states modern affairs with that of its ancient is the best means by which to draw political knowledge from them. True political liberty could only come from a rehabilitation of states standards. Because a republic is intended to preserve liberty and use it to promote general wellbeing, it is critical to regain freedom as soon as possible. Desperate times such as war, natural disasters, etc. always lead to a degree of degeneration, and so it is critical to adjust the government and its policies in order to regain what has been lost (I I, II). Ultimately, the structure of the Roman republic and Machiavelli s favorability of it is what distinguishes his true republican nature. As he advocates for a distribution of power rather than for it to be wholly vested in the people, it can be discerned that modeling a state after a Republic is the superior means by which to ... The Pros And Cons Of Alcohol Advertisements Many entrepreneur s objectives are to grab the people s attention to focus on their product or understand the reasoning why they promote it in that way. People get different messages throughout the advertisement that is promoted. These people tend to go after what society goes after. If the product is not on trend, then it must have a creative slogan for the society, so they have something to focus. This is all based on the ethos, pathos, and logos that the creators focused on, so their message could be reached out. As an example, the first advertisement of Budweiser consists of animals. Ethos represents credibility or an ethical appeal which involves persuasion by the character involved, ( ). The purpose of this advertisement is to buy beer with a companion. These entrepreneurs made their clip specifically for those who are into drinking beer. Since a small scene concluded of a celebratory for the recovery of a missing dog, teens have a higher risk of being tempted into wanting to drink. • 18. Similarities Between Thomas Jefferson And Slavery Thomas Jefferson and Slavery Thomas Jefferson had written in the Declaration of Independence that, all men are created equal. Also, every man has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In addition, several enlightenment thinkers in Europe believed in natural law, human progress, and a government made for the people, all of whom inspired Jefferson. Despite this, in 1716, 500,000 African slaves were kept in the Americas, and Jefferson was one of these people that owned slaves. Slavery was legal in all states until 1777, when Vermont outlawed it. Six years later, Massachusetts followed. New Hampshire removed it from their constitutional interpretation. After this, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Connecticut adopted gradual emancipation programs, meaning they gradually freed slaves, ending it in these states. Finally, New York and New Jersey freed their slaves, leaving the southern colonies remaining. While some people did free their slaves in the south, many did not. This is because they heavily relied on them, not just for work, but for their status. It was woven in their lives to the point where it was a representation of the slave owner s wealth. Jefferson hated slavery, to the point where he made a plan to remove it in Virginia, which ended up failing. He was in a large amount of debt at the time, so he didn t believe he could free his own slaves while he was still alive. Thomas Jefferson had a close relationship with a slave named Sally Hemings, which was very controversial and considered shameful at the time. James Callender said that Jefferson had fathered several children from one of his slaves, which didn t get credit until Fawn M. Brodie published a book in 1974 called, Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History, where she portrayed the relationship between Jefferson and Hemings. While most versions showed their relationship as shameful and scandalous, she made it look like they were a happy couple, as if he fell in love with her and married when she was 14. Others do not think this way because Jefferson was very protective of his social life, going to extreme measures to hide it. This makes some people believe he was trying to hide something. • 19. John Stuart Mill And Aristotle John Stuart Mill and Aristotle both address the idea of happiness as the goal of human life. They explain that all human action is at the foundation of their moral theories. Mill addresses the Greatest Happiness Principle, which is the greatest amount of pleasure to the least amount of pain. Similarly, Aristotle addresses happiness through the idea of eudaimonia and human flourishing. According to Aristotle, eudaimonia is happiness, it is the state of contemplation that individuals are in when they have reached actualized happiness. Also referred to as happiness or human flourishing, it is the ultimate goal of human beings. Happiness is living well and acting well. He explains that once general happiness becomes recognized as the moral standard, natural sentiment will nurture feelings that promote utilitarianism. According to Aristotle, happiness is a state of being. Both Mill and Aristotle agree that in order to attain true happiness, human beings must engage in activities that are distinct to humans and that make them happy. Aristotle s idea of eudaimonia and human flourishing is a more compelling argument than Mill s for happiness and the final end because Aristotle explains that the virtues bring human beings to happiness. Aristotle believes that happiness is an activity in accord with virtue. Happiness is in accord with the most excellent virtue. All men agreed that happiness is to live well , but Aristotle expands this further into a whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Self empowerment is taking control of one s own life, knowing their limits and learning from their mistakes. Siddhartha rejected the teachings of the Buddha in order to gain knowledge through experiences, Siddhartha lost himself and made mistakes in his quest for getting enlightened but found retribution by realizing his mistakes, learning from them and making a change. From Hume s philosophy it is understood that there are two types of knowledge, knowledge of the world, which is subjective to a person s experience and prior knowledge which is knowledge of relations of ideas that cannot be experienced such as mathematics. Although students have prior knowledge such as mathematics, knowledge of the world comes from experience and students need experience in order to gain self empowerment and achieve success. • 26. Two Major Components Of Lactate Dehydrogenase In Biology Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme that is found in most living organisms which catalyzes the conversion of lactate to pyruvic acid. It converts NAD+ to NADH and back again. Pyruvate is converted to lactate when oxygen isn t present and the reverse reaction takes place (Wikipedia). There are two major subunits of lactate dehydrogenase which are the M form and the H form. The M form, major subunit in muscles, is efficient in the conversion of pyruvate to lactate. The H form, major subunit in the heart, is efficient in the conversion of lactate to pyruvate. Despite the differences in structure of the M and H form, there s enough similarity for hybrids of the M and H form to form (Goodsell). The oxidization of lactate requires the binding of NAD+ to the enzyme first before lactate. A hydride ion is rapidly transferred in either direction yielding a mixture of the two teranary complexes, enzyme NAD+ lactate and enzyme NADH pyruvate. The dissociation of pyruvate from the enzyme followed by NADH takes place. The rate of dissociation of NADH is the rate limiting step. This remains valid in the reverse reaction as the binding of NADH takes place first and then the substrate, pyruvate, is able to bind (Busby). The reverse reaction of pyruvate to lactate is the thermodynamically favored reaction. When oxygen is insufficient, it s purpose is to restore NAD+ to allow glycolysis to continue without stopping (Aalto). Although this reaction has a Gibbs Free energy value is 200kJ/mol, 93% ... • 34. Analysis Of Bruce Wayne s Batman Essay In Batman: Ego, Bruce Wayne struggles to fight his inner demons. These demons take on the shape of Batman and lead to a power struggle with Bruce Wayne. Wayne fights to hold on to what he believes in and show the world the true meaning of the Batman costume. This fight categorizes not only Wayne s character but also the character of Batman. The comic pushes the characters into stereotypical roles of what a hero and a villain are. Initially, Bruce Wayne is presented as the canon good guy or the hero, while Batman is presented as the stereotypical bad guy . This representation is achieved by the comic through its use of details. Due to the illusion of light and the use of colors, Batman: Ego represents Bruce Wayne s character as a being of purity and innocence and represents Batman as a being of evil and darkness. Batman: Ego uses the illusion of light to portray Bruce Wayne s character in a positive way and the character of Batman in a negative way. Every time Bruce Wayne is shown in one of the comic panels, a beam of light is shown over his face or behind him. No matter the background of the comic, Wayne is always clearly visible as if a beam of light is constantly aimed at him. By doing this, the comic is setting Wayne up as a symbol of purity and light. Wayne is like a beacon of hope who strongly contrasts with the dark reality that is Gotham. This use of light is most clearly seen in a panel on page 54. One verse states, The woman s heart, asleep in the child, was vaguely thrilled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These expectations were followed loyally and people who failed to follow suit were shunned or sometimes even suffered seriously punishment including crude public beatings that were mot only pain inflicting but also status damaging (Rocke, Gender and Sexual Culture, 159). Looking deeper into the novel The Return of Martin Guerre, we identify from the start the expectations that are in place and how they play a role in the story. In comparison of Characters, taking into consideration the standard that had been set for men of this era, we notice that Pansette (Arnaud du Tilh) is an almost faultless example of what is expected for men and in contrast, Martin Guerre fails to meet these standards. First, some background on what was expected of men at this time. Natalie Zemon Davis describes expectancies of men through a number of instances in Martin Guerre s life.
