Culture Adoption in Wole Soyinka’s and Tsitsi...
Colonialism versus Origin
Within Wole Soyinka s and Tsitsi Dangarembga s intricately weaved novels, both pieces of literature
successfully intertwine to portray the estrangement and hardships dealt with through the main
characters in settling within a separate environment apart from their origins; culture and adopting the
colonial mentality which is imposed upon them. There is a negative portrayal of the colonial mentality
that manifests onto the African society. There are three major categories within these two texts
displaying the characters that forget that they play these roles within society as puppets of colonialism,
those who rebel against the invading culture that seems to threaten their sense of identity and lastly
those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This brings the characters to lose grasp of their origins, which in turn are also losing a large part of
their identities as well. As time progresses, the characters forget that they are playing roles according
to the Colonists whims. This is clearly portrayed through Wole Soyinka s novel. As clearly displayed
within the first act, There is a distinctive culture apart from the British introduced which portrays the
different values and customs that the Africans perform. Amusa whom is an African sergeant in the
native administration police working for the white British colonialists is an example of a puppet of
colonialism turning against the Africans systematic way of life through the adoption of British
customs and values. Though Amusa has converted towards the British Empire, he is still seen as
inferior in Pilking s eyes thus this shows that due to his origin, he will never be valued in the eyes of a
colonist. Amusa fears the Engungun costume yet aids the British in stopping the African rituals, which
deprive the African people of their beliefs. They don t seem to realize that they are harming their own
culture but rather see it as an alien culture once they have fully adopted other methods of practice
through the English culture. Joseph is also a prime example of a character that has taken up a role
within the colonialist society through his acceptance of the catholic religion. Joseph is a convert
influenced by the British and believes that

Similarities Of The Mayan Civilization
Despite bearing some minor similarities the difference between Mayan artwork like the Cylindrical
vessel with ritual ballgame scene and Pablo Picasso s Les Demoiselles d Avignon are pronounced.
The best way to understand the Mayan is to have some historical information about them. The Maya
civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization from around 2000 BCE to 1500 CE. This civilization
developed in areas like Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, Yucatán Peninsula, western El Salvador and
Honduras. Ritual, religion, and Cosmology are essential components of Mayan life, (Ca.A.D. 1200
1513) and Colonial (A.D. 1513 1830) periods of indigenous migrations and Spanish Conquest. Many
of their actions were based on ceremonies and rituals. Ritual also ... Show more content on

Morality And Ethics On Transhumanism
Morality and Ethics on Transhumanism
A Concentrated Look at The Diamond Age

Envision a world where nano sized robots can burrow themselves into your skin just by touching
something or perhaps explode within you on command. Consider perchance, a world were humans
have collective thoughts and can generate the processing power of a super computer. Sounds like
something out of an awesome dream or a nightmare, depending on how you perceive it. These are just
some of the ideas that are presented in transhumanism. Transhumanism can be explained as the belief
that the human race can advance past its current physical and intellectual confines through the use of
technology (Bostrom, 2014). In the current world we live in, we are limited by a number of factors,
many of these include the scientific limitations and the properties of physics. On the other side of the
limitations, lay the concepts of morality and ethical issues. Along with those concepts include how this
technology correlates to our current world. In the novel The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson,
humans live alongside nanobots (and various other technology) in a transhumanist world. In this
advanced world, the ideas of morality and ethics are still present within the human race. In many
aspects, the morality and ethical issues that humans encounter today are reencountered in this
transhuman world. In the novel The Diamond Age, Neal opens the story with the

Spider-Man
Nearly all heroes are faced with a variety of inconceivable tasks which in turn help to overcome
obstacles that the character may face. In Spider Man, Peter Parker is forced to overcome these
impediments so that he can help protect the people in his city. The task that first illustrates this quest is
Spider Man s revenge on the man who killed his uncle and committed robbery. To catch this criminal,
though, Spider Man has to learn how to use his mind: thinking quickly and on the spot. Not only does
it take courage for Spider Man to defeat this criminal, it takes quick reflexes that only his spidey
senses can offer him. In the end, Spider Man tricks the man and is successful in turning him into the
police. Another example of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being the hero that he is, Spider Man decides to save both the children and Mary Jane. A large battle
between Spider Man and the Green Goblin ensues, with the Green Goblin s eventual death, and Spider
Man s massive injuries being the result. Spider Man finally defeats the enemy, in his final ordeal,
saving New York from cold blooded villainy for a while. Therefore, by completing, undergoing, and
overcoming extremely difficult tasks such as battling with the enemy and saving the ones he loves, the
film Spider Man shows that it is part of the quest archetype.
Body paragraph 2:
A large part of any story, especially one with the quest archetype, is love. Since the first time he sees
Mary Jane at the age of six, Peter Parker (Spider Man) has loved her. At this time, Peter even asked his
aunt: Aunt May, Aunt May, is that an angel? This truly displays how much Spider Man adores Mary
Jane. In fact, Peter will do anything to help her. For example, near the beginning of the film, Peter
saves Mary Jane from slipping in the cafeteria. Because of his powerful love of Mary Jane, Peter also
faces consequences, though. His enemies, such as the Goblin Goblin, can manipulate him using Mary
Jane as a bribe, or ransom.

Frameworks In Greenwashing
Businesses are facing increasing pressures from both internal and external stakeholders to be
accountable and transparent, and to disclose the social, environmental and economic impacts of their
activities through sustainability reporting (Klettner, Clarke Boersma 2014; Soderstrom 2013).
Accordingly, there has been an increase in organisations claiming their voluntary commitment to the
international standards and frameworks for corporate sustainability namely, the United Nations Global
Compact (UNGC) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) s sustainability reporting guidelines
(Klettner, Clarke Boersma 2014; Milne Gray 2013). According to Benn, Dunphy Griffiths (2014)
sustainability phase model, this demonstrates a shift ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is not to say that frameworks such as the GRI do not endorse improvements in business reporting
and accountability (Milne Gray 2013). Rather, it is the fact that the adoption of these frameworks
solely relies on the voluntary commitment by businesses that reduces its effectiveness (Klettner,
Clarke Boersma 2014; Milne Gray 2013). This same issue also extends to companies codes of conduct
and certification schemes.
Elsewhere, the introduction of the new IR framework by the IIRC (International Integrated Reporting
Council) has been suggested to be a paradigm shift in the way corporations report their activities to
stakeholders (Klettner, Clarke Boersma 2014; Soderstrom 2013). Until now, business reports primarily
focused on TBL (Triple Bottom Line) reporting of economic, social and environmental impacts
(Adams 2013). While some corporations have demonstrated a willingness to achieve higher standards
of performance in corporate sustainability in line with international frameworks (such as the GRI),
rarely do they produce reports which provide information on social and environmental issues to the
same extent and quality as that of financial information (Boersma 2013;

Recycling Dog Parks
Dog parks can be of great benefit, both to the cities they reside within, and to the dog owners
themselves. However, they are not without cost; They can be costly to install and become an issue to
the nearby residential areas. As such, the decision to install a dog park is not a light one to be made.
Dog parks can improve a canine s health greatly by providing a proper space for one to play and
socialize with other dogs. To this extent, it allows a dog to properly exercise, improving it s mood and
reducing the occurence of what has been deemed as bad behavior. This, in turn, results in drastically
fewer incidents of citizens being bitten by a dog; For example, according to A Dog Park Benefits All ,
when New York City instituted leash free dog parks, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, there is the concern of noise that should be considered. The average decible range of a
canine is between 75 and 100 decibles, factoring in larger canines. This can be disruptive to
neighbooring residential areas, and create a displeasing atmosphere, as has been reported previously in
several areas.
These issues must be taken into consideration. However, they must be taken into consideration
factoring in the positives as well. Will the costs previously incurred by dog bites, the incident reports,
and any issues resulting there of, offset the average cost to taxpayers for instituting a dog park? Can
the dog park take sound into consideration during construction in order to reduce the amount of noise
that can be heard from nearby areas?
Permitting all factors are accounted for, and the ratio of dog owners to non owning citizens is enough
of a considerable amount, the installation of a dog park can be beneficial to any city. One should not
let the cost scare them, for they can be quite the cost saving

Vladimir Nabokov and Lolita
A man of many talents, Vladimir Nabokov is known not only for his controversial work Lolita, he was
also an avid lepidopterist in particular, butterflies. There is no doubt that when penning Lolita s
character, Nabokov imprinted several butterfly characteristics on her. This essay however does not
seek to investigate the parallels between Lolita and the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Rather, it takes
the road less travelled and examines the parallels between Nabokov and Humbert Humbert, not as a
pervert, but as a scientist. Nabokov s interest in butterflies stemmed from a childhood obsession as he
recalls chasing butterflies (Time) in Switzerland in 1964. While most people relinquishes their
childhood hobbies, Nabokov pursued his interest in lepidopterology throughout his adult life where
his passion for butterflies lead him to become a specialist in lepidopterist. As a scientist, Nabokov was
acquainted to the clinical ways of science experiments and observations. While this is greatly
illustrated in Humbert s interaction with Lolita in both cases, the former assumes the role of the
scientist and the later the object of investigation Humbert s analytical nature is also reflected in
relation to other characters and incidents including himself as Nabokov draws from his scientific
persona in crafting Humbert s character. In both cases, the former assumes the role of the scientist and
the later the object of investigation. Scientists have to approach an

Reuben Log
In Alia Wong s Digitals Natives, Yet Strangers to the Web, Wong discusses the motives behind Reuben
Loewy s Living Online Lab as technology is misshapen into education and immobilizing students
from thinking critically. In other words, technology is creeping itself into a student s learning
environment causing a mayhem as educators incorrectly incorporate them alongside given curriculums
and set expectations that students are technology born prodigies. Technology has digitized the
traditional setting of a classroom with its enticement of quick access and efficiency. As alluring as it is

This concept is Loewy s interdisciplinary curriculum for the digital age, and from this, education
should change for the better. By highlighting important aspects of the program, Wong shows opposers
and concerned parents the solutions to their worries. Danger on the internet will always be present,
and it s all a matter of understanding of how to interact with the internet. If students don t know how
to properly interact on the internet, of course, parents are going to have their concerns. This leads to
the fearmongering and massive information campaigns over avoiding such issues, which wouldn t be
an issue if covered in school more in depth. In addition, according to Wong, Loewy s concept is not
the first either, University of Pennsylvania English Professor Kenneth Goldsmith launched a course
[in 2015] called Wasting Time on the Internet, where it teaches students how to use technology
appropriately, and use it to their advantage of gaining knowledge, rather than wilting it away with
societal norms. Therefore, digital citizenship becomes vital if technology is to be a part of education,
which Wong thrives in informing her

Chicana Epistemology
A general definition of Epistemology is the theory of knowledge; it s methods, validity, and scope.
From a Chicana Feminism standpoint, I believe it is how we analyze knowledge from the culture that
influences our daily lives. Chicanas strive and grow through the teachings and stories of past activists
which tells us the changes that have been made and the changes that are still to come. They are
important because it gives us different perspectives and understandings of Chicana history. Not every
story it the same, but there is a connection. Through this theory, we all gain the opportunity to see
through a Chicana feminist scope into each other s stories.

Cantu wrote an interesting novel titled Canicula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera which she
categorizes it as a self reflection . She has found inspiration in written work by women who have
published similar works: Gloria Anzaldua, Sandra Cisneros, and Cherrie Moraga are all women who
published pieces that challenged traditional genres. Their creative non fiction stories widen the
feminist standpoint and create knowledge on their individual struggles. Unbeknownst to me, this new
genre, creative non fiction, was coming into being just as I was planning and writing Canicula in the
spring and summer of 1993, (98). As the genre was on the rise, Cantu was discovering a new side to
her writing. Chicana Feminist Epistemology relates to this because women of color writers
encouraged Cantu to embrace her own heritage in her writing. Canicula is a critical work of fiction
and an ethnography, (104). Her novel intersects both her skills and is an example of Chicana Feminist
work that contains other histories of influential women non creative

Deep sleep seemed to improve the orangutan s cognition: Whenever orangutan had slept more deeply,
they performed better at memory games (Barth). Deep sleep not only process good memories but also
deal with sad memories. If I went to sleep feeling upset, a lot of the time I would l feel better when I

the upsetting aspects of it (Lewis). Moreover, the heart rests and tired muscles repairs better while

My Visit To Detroit
One piece of architecture I had the pleasure of visiting is the Michigan Central Station. An icon if
there ever was one, representing Detroit s rise and fall. It is so structurally sound demolition experts
say would cost an estimated $5 10 Million just to demolish and anywhere from $100 300 million to
renovate. More of an issue for Detroit is finding a function for the forgotten station. It was built by the
same architects as New York City s Grand Central Terminal. In service from 1913 to 1988, The Beaux
Art style was very influential during its conception. There is the train station itself and the 18 story

I had not had the opportunity to fully explore it in its entirety unfortunately as I did not want to leave
my car unsupervised for long being in Detroit and all. I still have dreams about it. What is it like in the

Detroit bounces back, MCS also being brought back to its former glory as a testament to what Detroit
is. Until then, this 500,000 square foot building will stand, like its predecessors of classic design in
ruin. The 18 story tower, never completely utilized, was intended to accommodate a hotel and/or
offices and the top floors were never served for any function. There is not much I can say that has
already been observed but from my perspective, sneaking into MCS as an adolescent made me feel
like I was in a completely different time. It made me feel as I was exploring the ruins of ancient Rome.

Finch Evolution And Completing The Gizmo Analysis
After watching the video on Finch evolution, and completing the gizmo, I have found many
correlations between the finch population, and the climate of the Galapagos Islands. The Finches beak
size was dependent on the climate, and natural selection. The population of the birds increased and
decreased throughout the years because the extreme climate changes and the process of natural
selection. For example, when there is little or no rainfall a drought; the bird population steadily
decreases, because birds are dying off due to the lack of rainfall. When rainfall became scarce, the
food supply did too. The small seeds that birds with small beaks relied on dissapeared. The only food
left on the Islands were large, hard seeds or fruits. The birds

Causes And Symptoms Of Transmissible Spongiform...
Introduction Creutzfeldt Jakobs (CJD) is a rare and incurable neurodegenerative fatal brain disease.
The disease rapidly and severely affects the brain and progressively disables an individual by
gradually destroying their memory, vision, ability to think and move voluntarily and function
independently. It is one variety of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) and is
categorized under a group of brain disorders known as prion diseases (Kraft, 2014). This disease is
very rare affecting about one person in every one million worldwide; in the states there are only about
300 cases a year. CJD interested me as my sister s god father (my dad s best friend) recently passed
about from this disease and witnessing the progress and tool ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This accounts for about 5% 10% of cases in the United States. The last category of acquiring CJD is
infectious CJD which occurs when an individual is exposed to an external source of prion protein.
Common outside sources which may cause infectious CJD are medical procedures involving surgical
instruments, growth hormone from human sources and certain transplanted human tissues. Another
cause is ingestion of meat or other products from cattle infected with bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (also known as mad cow disease). In the mid 1990 s scientists traced this type of CJD
from cattle that were fed a diet comprised of processed brain tissue from other animals to individuals
who consumed the beef. However, since its first description, less than 1% of cases were identified by
acquiring the disease through exposure (Gozke et al. 2008). Below is a chart demonstrating the
numbers of individuals diagnosed with CJD through the three categories described above in several
different countries ( BSE Info , 2007): Symptoms of CJD usually occur after the age of 60 due to the
destruction of brain cells which rapidly deteriorates and severely disables the patient eventually
resulting in death (Kraft, 2014). The order of symptoms that occur vary dramatically from individual
to individual though are just as quickly deteriorating to the brain and body.

The Louis Vuitton Speedy Bag Essay
1. The Louis Vuitton Speedy Bag is constructed by its famous Monogram Canvas. The monogram
canvas contains the famous LV design. An often misconception about the Speedy bag is that the bag
itself is derived from cotton and is not actually leather, it is just manufactured to feel as though it is.
However, the handles, stamp on the front, and pulls anywhere else on the bag are in fact leather. The
bags are water resistant, durable and easy to clean. They come in four different sizes; 25, 30, 35, 40.
The speedy bag is an iconic piece from all Louis Vuitton Collections. The bag originated from Paris as
that is where Louis Vuitton himself is from. The size 25 Speedy bag is priced at $950, the 30 at $970,
the 35 at $990 and the 40 at $1,010 (Louis Vuitton). The Speedy itself comes in three different colors,
the original LV Monogram Canvas, the Damier Ebene Canvas, and the Damier Azur Canvas. This
item can be bought in any Louis Vuitton retailer including online. The Speedy bag can also be bought
in the following department stores, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barney s,

Quality, Process, And Location Analysis Essay
Quality, Process, and Location Analysis
Without success there is no business. The goal for any organization is be successful. In order to be a
successful business, it is essential to explore the use of process management functions within the
operations management (OM) processes. Nissan, like most companies, has had their high and low
moments. Fortunately, they have been able to explore the use of process management functions to help
reach their goals and keep their business successful. Nissan has used the five steps associated with
Theory of Constraints (TOC ) and Total Quality Management (TQM) tools to help improve quality
overall within the business. Nissan has also been able to analyze data through cause and effect
diagrams, time function maps, and weighted averages to incorporate OM functions such as new
products and future expansions.
Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a group of data that deals with something that may limit or constrain a
business s ability to achieve their goals (Linton, 2016). TOC is the idea that the weakest link will be
the strongest you can be and when you improve the weakest link you will improve the process overall.
The key to improving the constraint or the weakest link is to be able to recognize and manage those
limitations with the five steps of TOC (Linton, 2016). The first step of TOC is to identify the
constraints. Nissan would need to identify its constraint, which is the bottleneck in their production
line. Step two

The Development of Many Colors Essay
As far back as the stone age men have looked for ways to share their lives and beliefs through art.
Primitive drawings have been found in caves in Europe, Asia and Africa. The only thing missing was
color to make the drawings more lifelike. By experimenting with plants, berries and minerals, men
have developed beautiful colors that have been improved until we have the tempera, oils, acrylic and
watercolor that artists use today. Tempera is the oldest paint medium known to man. Powered
minerals, plants or clay were used for pigment and egg yolks were used as a binder. Sometimes, artists
mixed the tempera with plaster to make frescoes on walls. Tempera paint is long lasting and does not
change color over time like oils. The colors are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He could not get the effect he wanted with the paint that was available at that time. He began to mix
oil with his colors to thin the paint and slow down the drying time. This allowed him to add more
shading and detail to his paintings(About.comPainting). Today s oil paint is a mixture of
pigment(color), a binder which is usually linseed oil and a thinner which is usually turpentine(Oil
Paint History). It was very hard to keep paint fresh during the early days of art. Before the nineteenth
century artist or their assistants were required to mix fresh batches of paint every day. Then colormen
began selling ready made paint in pig bladders. Artists had to punch a hole in the bladder to get the
paint out and they put a tack in the hole to reseal it. In 1822 James Hams, an English artist, invented a
glass syringe with a plunger to force the paint out. Finally, in 1841 the American artist John Goffe
Rand invented and patented the squeezable tube with a twist cap. Today this invention is not only used
for paint, it is also used for toothpaste, ointment, creams, etc(About.comPainting). Acrylic resin was
invented by Dr. Otto Rohm in the 1930 s. By the 1950 s Liquite began offering water soluble artist
acrylic paint(ARTmine). It is a fast drying paint. In her book Brave Intuitive Painting Flora Bowley

Literary Analysis Of The Second Coming By William Butler...
Humans crave validation and community yet rue the commonality of shared experiences with the
masses. As civilizations rise and fall, repetition permeates each rendition not only in their creation but
in their demise. In The Second Coming, William Butler Yeats, through allusions to biblical stories,
ancient cultures, doctrinal clairvoyance, and spiritual life conveys an understanding that mankind
holds much more power over its own story than the conscious mind believes.
For clarity, it is necessary to examine the concept of the Second Coming and it s value to Yeats s poem
as the speaker references it three times consecutively in lines eight through ten, Surely some
revelation is at hand; / Surely the Second Coming is at hand. / The Second ... Show more content on

It follows to question whether the Second Coming is truly the end of the world. Biblical Egypt as its
citizens once knew it ceased to exist, but the world in its entirety did not end. The Second Coming
may simply be the end of a particular culture and nothing more than an event feared by those directly
involved.
For religious folk of a Christian bent in more contemporary times, Egypt is often viewed in a negative
light and its rulers as oppressors of God s chosen people. Many people perceive it as simply the home
of the pyramids; seldom is it considered as a cultural powerhouse to those outside of the field of
history. The speaker in Yeat s poem alludes to Egypt through the image of the Great Sphinx in the
lines Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert / A shape with lion body and the head of a
man (13 14). The Egyptians were a brilliant minded people and knew much more than was attributed
to them in Biblical texts. The Egyptians believed that statues were vessels for the spirits of the
deceased and the Sphinx in particular was built for the Pharaoh Khafre. The speaker expresses an air
of empathy for the creature with but now I know / That twenty centuries of stony sleep / Were vexed
to nightmare by a rocking cradle (18 20). He forms a bond with the dead ruler and subsequently
illuminates a symbol that many of his religious contemporaries considered a devilish fiend. He sees

The Issue Of Gay Marriage
Gay marriage, something that has increasingly been on the news, is talked about in chapter five.
Lambda Legal Defense eve talks about how they will enforce gay marriage through the manipulation
of the courts. The whole trend started in 1996 in Hawaii, with a ruling there saying theres no reason to
ban gay civil marriages. The biggest problem, is that this is not the job of the Supreme Court Justices
to decide, but elected representatives. In 20 years, the Supreme court has decided in two cases
addressing constitutionality of state sodomy in Bowers v. Hardwick and Lawrence v. Texas. In Romers
v. Evans, it ruled on a state constitution amendment. William F. Buckley wrote a response where in
summary he is declaring the Supreme Court has no right to be in the bedroom of Americans. Having
government involved in any personal matter is hazardous. The debate over which branch of
government gets to decide how, when, and why it can be there(Levin.73) this is saying that the
government will enforce themselves in our privacy on other issues besides gay relationships and
contraceptives. New York times ran an article talking about sodomy laws, and how they are rarely
enforced due to not being able accurately prove anything, and also the time it would take to search for
violators. In Bowers V. Hardwick an Atlanta police officer went to Hardwick s house with a warrant
for ticket violations, and found Hardwick with another man in his bedroom. Hardwick was put in jail

Theological Turning Points Book Review
Theological Turning Points is written by Donald K. McKim. This work focuses on the major
theological issues that Christianity has faced for centuries. These theological issues often go through
several turning points that help resolve their problems. After reading through this book, I found myself
learning new information that has helped clear any misunderstandings that I had towards Christianity.
I have a better understanding of the Christology of who Jesus was, the sacrament of Baptism, and the
Eschatology of what the Kingdom of God is.
Theological Turning Points made me feel more informed on who Jesus Christ was. Jesus is our savior
who came down to earth to die for our sins, but I wasn t sure if Jesus was to be considered pro divine
or pro human. I wasn t sure if Jesus was God taking a human form, or if he was truly human like every
other person. Justin Martyr believed that Jesus preexisted as God and was made flesh of the virgin,
being born as a man (McKim, 1988, pg. 27). Apollinarius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I always considered the Kingdom of God to be created when God returns to earth and begins his work
in creating the new heaven and earth. However, this only half of what I learned from Theological
Turning Points. John Calvin conceived the Kingdom of God in two ways. The Kingdom of God for
Calvin has two senses: (1) the teaching the Gospel by which Christ gathers the church to himself and
(2) the actual fellowship of the godly, who, have been united among themselves by the sincere faith of
the Gospel (McKim, 1988, pg. 161 162). In the first sense, the kingdom of God has already been
created when Christ died on the cross for our sins, but in the second sense, the world had not yet been
united under God s banner. I am also reminded by Karl Barth that the kingdom of God escapes all
intellectual systematizing (McKim, 1988, pg. 164). The true glory of the Kingdom of God will never
be understood until the day it

Catch 22 Genres
Genres are categorizations of any media based on established similarities in writing style and
conventions. Instead of a strict set of rules, works under genres typically follow a loose set of
guidelines. For example, movies under the horror genre typically employ suspense and mystery to
give viewers a sense of unease and discomfort. One example of a genre is superhero fiction, chosen
mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the protagonist
or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the antagonist or villain
also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Action scenes between the
hero and the villain or the hero and the villain s grunts are a key part of superhero fiction. Another
example of genres is science fiction which is chosen due to its wide prevalence in literature. Writers of
this genre typically speculate on more advanced technology such as space travel and artificial
intelligence wielded by either humans or some other sentient species introduced by the writers. While

Genres are fluid: they often respond to changes within the world. For example, Joseph Heller s
satirical novel Catch 22 became popular as it reflected the growing opposition towards the Vietnam
War in the 1960s through its criticism of the military complex (BBC News, 2012). Because genres are
fluid, they frequently change to reflect the shifting expectations of readers or viewers. The superhero
genre, for instance, evolved from simple stories involving the triumph of good over evil in its
beginning to stories incorporating darker and grittier themes today. New genres also form to meet the
developing needs of consumers. For instance, satire developed as a means to draw attention to faults
within society and criticize established groups such as

What Is The Interplay Between Psychological And Biological...
A basic tenet of researchers argue that the interactions among psychological and biological factors are
potent contributors to health and disease. Health is determined by several factors including genetic
inheritance, personal behaviours, access to quality health care, and the general external environment.
Over the past several decades, the area of health psychology has seen the rise of a great interest from
researchers, motivated by recent evidence that psychological and biological factors have important
implications for health (Kiecolt Glaser et al. 2002; Cohen et al. 2007). This essay addresses the
interplay among psychological and biological factors in health and disease. Several psychological and
biological determinants that exert great influence on health are reviewed in this essay: Self Efficacy
beliefs, Locus of Control, Personality Types psychological factors as well as stress reactivity, immune
system, hormones biological factors will be examined in greater detail below. Research has
increasingly focused on the understanding of the psychological factors in influencing physical health
and on identifying the biological and behavioural mechanisms underlying these effects. More
specifically, Locus of Control (LoC) has been widely employed as a measure of perceived control in
health (Wallston Wallston, 1978). It has been argued that LoC is a generalised measure between
internal and external locus of control and represents individual s beliefs on the control they

History of Health Insurance Essay
Healthcare didn t always exist in the United States. Before the 1920 s, most people didn t have health
coverage. Most people were treated at home and hardly anyone, except a few large employers offered
healthcare. Everyone else paid out of pocket. As the population shifted from rural areas to urban
centers, families lived in smaller homes with less room to care for sick family members (Faulkner
1960, p. 509). Increasing requirements for licensing and accreditation, in addition to a rising demand
for medical care, eventually led to rising costs. By the end of 1920s, there was an increased demand
for medical care and the costs of medical care increased.

Also, a lack of insurance is a huge financial burden for individuals and their families. Lack of health
insurance has social consequences, as well. Some diseases are highly contagious and can be spread
easily to family members, friends, colleagues, co workers and others, one may come in contact with.
With health insurance, these contagious diseases can be contained and cured or treated more quickly
and cost effectively. People without health insurance have limited, reduced access to services of
preventive care, like cancer screening.
Moreover, the benefits of expanding coverage outweigh the costs for added services. [4] Safety net
care from hospitals and clinics improves access to care but does not fully substitute for health
insurance. These findings are supported by much research, although some cautions are appropriate in
using these results. People with health insurance are protected against uncertain and high medical
expenses and are more likely to receive needed and appropriate health care. In addition, having health
insurance is associated with improved health outcomes and lower mortality, so employees with health
insurance are more likely to be productive workers. You do not pay income tax on health insurance
benefits so it is more valuable per dollar than the same amount in taxable pay. [5]

Tor website addresses do not look like ordinary URLs that we see on websites that we use every day.
They use a random looking strings of characters followed by names that use the .onion extension. An
example of a website address that is hidden: http://dppmfxaacucguzpc.onion/. This web address
allows users that use Tor to find directories, wikis and free for all link dumps. These will help anyone
find anything that they might be looking for while browsing the Darknet.
Tor allows both the server and client to remain anonymous. It also guarantees that what happens
between these two parties stays with these two parties. The information is protected from third parties
as the data is encrypted. This is possible because the nodes that are in between the server and the client
have no idea who is talking to whom and what is being exchanged between them. Tor is very effective
when it comes to privacy because it is designed and maintained to provide the highest level of security
and anonymity. It even poses some problems for the FBI as the Bureau claims that there is not
currently a way to trace the origin of the website. As such no other investigative leads exist. This was
when they were trying to find out about who the owner was of a child pornography site. It is also
important to know that people the dark net are completely safe. Some vigilante hackers that were

Types Of Diplomacy And Combat Terrorism
5 types of diplomacy to combat terrorism
The ever changing nature of terrorism threats have led many states to devise collaborative methods to
fight terrorist organizations by adapting regular security assessments and taking counterterrorism
measures in order to overcome them. Through diplomacy, many states are searching for advanced
support, methods, structures, and tools to combat internal threats and win war against terrorism
(Phillips, Neal Webb, 2011). Diplomacy is an instrument of power that can build political will and
foster international cooperation. Through diplomatic support, nations can promote counterterrorism
assistance that serves mutual interests. In addition, diplomacy can help nations to fight against
terrorists by controlling resources that terrorists need. The five common types of diplomacy
counterterrorism strategies adopted by the U.S. include trainings, finance control programs, research,
terrorist interdiction program, and foreign emergency support program.
In training diplomacy, the aim is to train and equip foreign states to fight terrorists within and around
their borders. Through these trainings, many states have established effective communication systems
and have improved their border monitoring abilities (Peterson, 2012). In regard to the finance control
diplomacy, the U.S. has established a program to help other nations to interrupt and control the flow of
funds going to support terrorists operations and to reinforce the financial and

The Human Development Index Is a Better Measure of...
I will advance the thesis that the Human Development Index (HDI) is a better measure of economic
performance than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita. By saying that the HDI is a better
system to measure economic performance, I mean that because the HDI highlights the trend between
longevity, education and economic growth, it calculates a better analysis of an economy (Costa,
Steckel 1997, p. 71). In contrast, the GDP per capita only accounts for the gross domestic product
without paying any attention to other factors of an economy (Hawthorn, Sen 1997, p. 60). With this
being said, my thesis asserts that the HDI is a better measure for economic performance because it

As I just defended the importance of considering longevity in an economy, I will now explain why it is
imperative to consider education when calculating the development and performance of an economy.
To begin, when a population is educated they will have the opportunity to adapt new technology and
new ideas to enhance their productivity and output, which is an essential part of competing against
other economies in the international arena. To be more specific, when a population is able to adapt
new technology and idea they increase their speed of production, which, in turn, increases their output,
which means, in simple terms, new technology and ideas increase an economy s growth because it
allows them to produce more, faster and trade more, faster. This is best explained in Invest in Humans,
Technological Diffusion, and Economic Growth that says, the better educated farmer is quicker to
adopt profitable new processes and products since, for him, the expected payoff from innovation is
likely to be greater and the risk likely to be smaller; for he is better able to discriminate between
promising and unpromising ideas, and hence les likely to make mistakes (Nelson, Phelps 1966, p.70) ,
while the less educated farmer is prudent to delay the introduction of new technology until he has
concrete evidence of its profitability, which is often from his

Grant Wood is a famous philosopher who was born in February in the year 1891 in Anamosa, Iowa.
Wood was born to Quaker parents on a small farm. This experience would be the basis of his iconic

What they shared, among themselves and among other American Scene painters, was a humble,
antimodernist style and a fondness for depicting everyday life. However, their rural conservatism put
them at odds with the urban and leftist Social Realists of the same era.
The three best known regionalists were Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood.
With Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry, who died prematurely in 1946, Wood represented
the painters of The American Scene also known as the school of Regional American Landscape. These
artists represented rural life in the U.S in the tradition of European masters.
They enjoyed success in 1930 during the Great Depression when the public found some intellectual
and moral comfort during troubled times. Wood was trying to induce the birth of a true American
national art. He even wrote a manifesto, Revolt against the City in 1935 calling for a renaissance of
American art which he found too dependent on European art, especially French art notably in the field
of abstract painting. He wanted to regroup regional schools in order to develop a new form of realistic
painting.
Success came late for Wood who spent his life in his native Iowa where he found his inspiration and
subjects. At the start of his career he was influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and then painted

Animal Poaching In Zimbabwe
Poaching in Zimbabwe has been a major issue in Zimbabwe since the mid 1800 s. Many of Zimbabwe
s wild animals have suffered a massive decline in population due to poaching. The best way to stop
the decline of wild animals in Zimbabwe is drones. Using drones will give rangers an upper hand
against animal poachers by monitoring and tracking different animals and poaching zones. For the
past 2 decades, Endangered animals are being killed for simple body parts tusks, bones, or pelts
illegally for money. Many poaching laws have been established in Zimbabwe but none of these laws
have been effective.
Poaching
has been illegal for hundreds of years, but it was during the Late Middle Ages that poaching
became a punishable offense. During this time, the right to hunt was limited to landowners and
nobility. Peasants usually did not have weapons, skills or the extra time to hunt, so in order to provide
food for their families they devised another way to bring meat to their tables ( How Poaching works ).
Since the middle ages people have always been buying and selling animals but as life got tougher for
the poor they had to resort to killing and selling body parts of animals to gain money. In the mid 1800
s hunting was only for the wealthy and privileged but as poverty increased poaching levels did too.
While hunting was reserved for the privileged, it was illegal to buy and sell wild animals. It remained
illegal to do so until the mid 1800s. Gangs of poachers formed outlaw

Morphology and Lipid Analysis of 3T3 L1 cells pre and post differentiation
Erin Kim
1
Abstract
This report will look at the morphology of 3T3 L1 cells pre and post differentiation and the percent
lipid in our adipocytes after differentiation. The analysis of cell morphology is important to study cell
behaviour such as the uptake of nutrients [1]. Three different plates of 3T3 L1 cells were examined. 2
of the plates were grown then differentiated into adipocytes. After differentiation, these cells were
fixed with formalin then one was stained with Oil Red O. The last plate was grown to confluency, but
did not undergo differentiation before fixing with formalin. After imaging these cells using a
fluorescence microscope, the images were analyzed with the Image J software. Image J analyzed the
shape index of the cell our results showed the adipocytes to have a shape index of 0.888±0.030 in
comparison to than the undifferentiated fibroblasts, which had a shape index of 0.335±0.082. The

These 3T3 L1 cells are capable of differentiating from fibroblasts into adipocytes under certain
conditions. 3T3 L1 cells are classified as Biosafety Level 1 [2]. 3T3 L1 cells divide rapidly until they

study was to examine 3T3 L1 cells before and after differentiation to compare their morphology and
lipid content.

Before staining the differentiated cells, they were fixed using formalin (cross linking) to preserve the
cell structure. By staining the cells with Oil Red O, we were able to stain the lipid within the cell,
which increases the contrast of a cell and makes it easier to visualize the lipid content within each cell

Erikson s stages of psychosocial development, as articulated by Erik Erikson, in collaboration with
Joan Erikson,[1] is a comprehensive psychoanalytic theory that identifies a series of eight stages, in

The theory holds that moral reasoning, the basis for ethical behavior, has six identifiable

Airports can often be described as small cities as they require efficient and effective management to
operate in a productive manner. Like small cities, an airport is comprised of a variety of different
systems, facilities, users, and regulations that are all interconnected. This complex and dynamic
environment has proven to be taxing on existing infrastructure over the past several decades as
passenger enplanements continue to reach record highs with a projected 1 billion passengers set to
travel worldwide by 2021 (Price 2011). For airports to achieve these lofty goals, they must tie
sustainability initiatives and objectives into the capital improvement budget process which requires
coordination with a variety of different stakeholders. This essay aims to explore various best practices
that can alleviate existing waste within the airport infrastructure environment in the United States and
obstacles that may be encountered while attempting to implement such solutions. It will also formulate
arguments for and against the implementation of greener initiatives from various industry
stakeholders. The scope of this research primarily focuses on renewable power generation, innovative
terminal design, and passenger incentives to make greener choices while traveling. These three
components correspond to the critical components that make up the airport system: the source, the
experience, and the passenger respectively. The current environmental impact of airports is one that

The Positive Connotation In Thou Blind Man s Mark
For many people, the word desire carries a positive connotation, bringing to mind dreams of things
that could be. In Sir Philip Sidney s poem Thou Blind Man s Mark, however, desire is characterized
not as a wistful thing, but as a dangerous compulsion that must be stopped. Through Sidney s
extensive use of figurative language and repetition, it is made clear that the speaker clearly despises
desire due to the horrible things desire can lead to. This expresses the idea that people must look
inside themselves to gain true happiness rather than desiring for things that can never be. The speaker
s negative attitude toward desire is established early on in the poem as the speaker compares desire to
many dreadful things in an almost ironic way. Desire is first described as a blind man s mark, which
creates a dark irony and sets the negative tone for the rest of the poem (1). A blind man would not be
able to see his target, so therefore he would not be able to clearly aim at the target. Rather, he must
shoot blindly and hope to hit the mark, which is what desire causes people to do. Desire can also be
seen as a fool s self chosen snare, implying that those who desire are foolish because they chose to fall
into the trap of desire rather than attempting to avoid it (1). These metaphors begin to characterize
desire as foolish and something that one cannot control. The metaphors in the next line set up the
speakers personal view on desire, as a fond fancy scum and dregs

Death Of A Loved One
Death of a Loved One
Studies have shown as many as 5 15% of bereaved people seem to develop severe long
term reactions to their loss. (Horowitz, M.J., Siegel, B., Holen, A., Bonanno, G.A., Milbrath, C.,
Stinson, C.H). Most people have experienced some type a loss their life. One of the most traumatic is
a death of a loved one. Coping with the passing of a loved one can be extremely challenging and
distressing. Crisis workers need to understand the grieving process, use the Schneider s Growth Model
and The Texas Revised Inventory of Grief. (TRIG)assessment as well as any intervention strategies for
them to facilitate healing after the death of a loved one.
Grieving Process
One way for the crisis worker to help a person who has experienced a death of a loved one, they must
understand the grieving process. A good way to that is to learn terms associated with loss. Some of the
terms are bereavement, grief, mourning, uncomplicated bereavement and complicated grief or
prolonged grief just to name a few. According to Brown and Goodman (2005), Bereavement is
understood to be the experience of having lost a loved one to death and grief is the various emotional,
physiological, cognitive and behavioral reactions to the loss and mourning is the cultural practices
which express bereavement and grief. (Brown, E. J., Goodman, R. F. (2005). Reactions to death are
unique to a person. The response depends on the several factors those being the severity of the loss,

Communication and Professional Relationships with...
UNIT TDA 3.1 COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH CHILDREN,
YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS 1.1. Effective communication is important in developing positive
relationships with children and young adults because it helps the child to be able to communicate
effectively with other people as they grow. Children react better to clear, concise communication and
this in turn will help to build better relationships between child and adult and enable trust to grow,
which is one of the key elements in building a relationship. It is also important to listen to the child
and let them say what they want to say. Do not try to pre empt or interrupt them. Try to keep your
language and explanation simple and to the point. Make them feel that what ... Show more content on

The vital thing is to be aware of their abilities and, as I have said above, be clear when
communicating, keep in mind what the child is capable of. Speak at their level and with eye contact.
Always encourage them to respond and answer questions, this will help with confidence. When they
get something right, praise them and make them feel good, this will also give them confidence. Also if
they get something wrong, or misbehave, explain what they have done wrong in a positive way and
explain what they could do to make it right. Repeat things if necessary and ensure that the child has
understood. Ask questions in a way that encourages children and young adults to answer in full
sentences which shows that they have understood what is being asked. 2.2 Age of child or young
person: You need to be adaptable in the way you communicate when working with children and young
adults. A young child will need clear and sometimes lengthy instructions on how to do something.
Whereas older children and young adults tend to grasp things quicker and you can explain things in a
more mature fashion. Some younger children like to have physical contact as well, especially if they
feel lonely or scared i.e. when they are upset and trying to explain to you what is wrong, an arm
around them or holding their hand will give them reassurance. Children of all ages need to feel secure
and feel valued in any environment and how you communicate with them should

Informative Speech On Factory Farming
It is possible, I think, to say that a Christian agriculture is formed upon the understanding that it is
sinful for people to misuse or destroy what they did not make. The creation is a unique, irreplaceable
gift, therefore to be used with humility, respect, and skill Wendell Berry (Berry, The Unsettling of
America: Culture and Agriculture). This quote speaks numbers to me. I believe that agriculture, both
animals and plants, should be farmed with humility, respect and skill, as said by Wendell Berry. It has,
however, become a concern of mine that this is not the case in large industrial farms. The purpose of
my speech is to persuade my audience that there is a need for large scale production of food to feed
the growing population, but there needs to be some restrictions placed on certain practices in factory
farming. I first became interested in agriculture when I joined 4 H and have since learned more
through farming and studying animal science here at Penn State. Even though we need factory
farming, factory farming should have restrictions because Confined Animal Feeding Operations and
monoculture practices are doing more harm than good.
Before we get started, I want to address and define a few key terms that I will be using throughout my
speech. First term I want to address is factory farming. I may also refer to this as industrial farming or
industrial agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, factory farming, or industrial
agriculture is the system of chemically intensive food production developed in the decades after World
War II, featuring enormous single crop farms and animal production facilities (Union of Concerned
Scientists, Industrial Agriculture). The next important key term is Confined Animal Feeding
Operations (CAFO). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a Confined Animal
Feeding Operation is a large operation where animals are kept and raised in confined situations
(USDA, Animal Feeding Operations). The final term I want to define before starting is monoculture.
According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, monoculture is the cultivation or growth of a single crop or
organism especially on agriculture or forest land (Merriam Webster, monoculture).

Critique Of Practical Reason By Immanuel Kant
In Critique of Practical Reason, Immanuel Kant gives an argument for the existence of God based on
practical reason and the moral law. He argues that reason strives for the highest good, which is a
connection between virtue and happiness (Kant 89). Practical reason runs into an issue when striving
for the highest good, however, because there is no apparent connection between virtue and happiness
in the natural world, which ultimately causes us to reject the moral law (Kant 92). According to Kant,
however, we cannot reject the moral law because this would be rejecting our rationality (Kant 93).
This is because Kant believes that all rational beings must act morally and follow the moral law as a
result of reason. This leads Kant to posit the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we strive for happiness to try to achieve virtue, our actions are not actually virtuous, according
to Kant, because virtue must come from striving for duty, not happiness (Kant 92). However, we also
cannot strive for virtue to attain happiness because we do not experience the connection between
virtue and happiness (Kant 92). This is a problem because Kant is a transcendental idealist, meaning
that he thinks that we are limited to objects of experience in what we can have knowledge of. Since
we do not experience the connection between virtue and happiness, and we cannot know if there is
actually a connection beyond what we can experience, we run into the problem of having to assume
that there is no connection. This causes us to reject the moral law because we are natural beings, in
that we cannot reject happiness, but naturally strive for it (Kant 92). Kant argues that rejecting the
moral law is not an option, however, because, by doing this, we would be giving up our humanity,
since he believes that morality stems from human reason (Kant 93). Therefore, there must be a
connection between virtue and happiness so that we do not have to reject the moral law. This
connection must be made because it would not be rational to strive for the highest good if it was not
possible to do so, and this is what makes it

Colonialism versus Origin Within Wole Soyinka s and Tsitsi Dangarembga s intricately weaved novels, both pieces of literature successfully intertwine to portray the estrangement and hardships dealt with through the main characters in settling within a separate environment apart from their origins; culture and adopting the colonial mentality which is imposed upon them. There is a negative portrayal of the colonial mentality that manifests onto the African society. There are three major categories within these two texts displaying the characters that forget that they play these roles within society as puppets of colonialism, those who rebel against the invading culture that seems to threaten their sense of identity and lastly those who ... As time progresses, the characters forget that they are playing roles according to the Colonists whims. This is clearly portrayed through Wole Soyinka s novel. As clearly displayed within the first act, There is a distinctive culture apart from the British introduced which portrays the different values and customs that the Africans perform. Amusa whom is an African sergeant in the native administration police working for the white British colonialists is an example of a puppet of colonialism turning against the Africans systematic way of life through the adoption of British customs and values. Though Amusa has converted towards the British Empire, he is still seen as inferior in Pilking s eyes thus this shows that due to his origin, he will never be valued in the eyes of a colonist. Amusa fears the Engungun costume yet aids the British in stopping the African rituals, which deprive the African people of their beliefs. They don t seem to realize that they are harming their own culture but rather see it as an alien culture once they have fully adopted other methods of practice through the English culture. Joseph is also a prime example of a character that has taken up a role within the colonialist society through his acceptance of the catholic religion. • 4. Morality And Ethics On Transhumanism Morality and Ethics on Transhumanism A Concentrated Look at The Diamond Age Stephan Ehr Science Fiction HU 424 April 17, 2015 Envision a world where nano sized robots can burrow themselves into your skin just by touching something or perhaps explode within you on command. Consider perchance, a world were humans have collective thoughts and can generate the processing power of a super computer. Sounds like something out of an awesome dream or a nightmare, depending on how you perceive it. These are just some of the ideas that are presented in transhumanism. Transhumanism can be explained as the belief that the human race can advance past its current physical and intellectual confines through the use of technology (Bostrom, 2014). In the current world we live in, we are limited by a number of factors, many of these include the scientific limitations and the properties of physics. On the other side of the limitations, lay the concepts of morality and ethical issues. Along with those concepts include how this technology correlates to our current world. In the novel The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson, humans live alongside nanobots (and various other technology) in a transhumanist world. In this advanced world, the ideas of morality and ethics are still present within the human race. In many aspects, the morality and ethical issues that humans encounter today are reencountered in this transhuman world. In the novel The Diamond Age, Neal opens the story with the ... In Spider Man, Peter Parker is forced to overcome these impediments so that he can help protect the people in his city. The task that first illustrates this quest is Spider Man s revenge on the man who killed his uncle and committed robbery. To catch this criminal, though, Spider Man has to learn how to use his mind: thinking quickly and on the spot. Not only does it take courage for Spider Man to defeat this criminal, it takes quick reflexes that only his spidey senses can offer him. Therefore, by completing, undergoing, and overcoming extremely difficult tasks such as battling with the enemy and saving the ones he loves, the film Spider Man shows that it is part of the quest archetype. Body paragraph 2: A large part of any story, especially one with the quest archetype, is love. Since the first time he sees Mary Jane at the age of six, Peter Parker (Spider Man) has loved her. At this time, Peter even asked his aunt: Aunt May, Aunt May, is that an angel? This truly displays how much Spider Man adores Mary Jane. In fact, Peter will do anything to help her. For example, near the beginning of the film, Peter saves Mary Jane from slipping in the cafeteria. Because of his powerful love of Mary Jane, Peter also faces consequences, though. Frameworks In Greenwashing Businesses are facing increasing pressures from both internal and external stakeholders to be accountable and transparent, and to disclose the social, environmental and economic impacts of their activities through sustainability reporting (Klettner, Clarke Boersma 2014; Soderstrom 2013). Accordingly, there has been an increase in organisations claiming their voluntary commitment to the international standards and frameworks for corporate sustainability namely, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) s sustainability reporting guidelines (Klettner, Clarke Boersma 2014; Milne Gray 2013). This is not to say that frameworks such as the GRI do not endorse improvements in business reporting and accountability (Milne Gray 2013). Rather, it is the fact that the adoption of these frameworks solely relies on the voluntary commitment by businesses that reduces its effectiveness (Klettner, Clarke Boersma 2014; Milne Gray 2013). This same issue also extends to companies codes of conduct and certification schemes. Elsewhere, the introduction of the new IR framework by the IIRC (International Integrated Reporting Council) has been suggested to be a paradigm shift in the way corporations report their activities to stakeholders (Klettner, Clarke Boersma 2014; Soderstrom 2013). Until now, business reports primarily focused on TBL (Triple Bottom Line) reporting of economic, social and environmental impacts (Adams 2013). While some corporations have demonstrated a willingness to achieve higher standards of performance in corporate sustainability in line with international frameworks (such as the GRI), rarely do they produce reports which provide information on social and environmental issues to the same extent and quality as that of financial information (Boersma 2013; ... • 8. Vladimir Nabokov and Lolita A man of many talents, Vladimir Nabokov is known not only for his controversial work Lolita, he was also an avid lepidopterist in particular, butterflies. There is no doubt that when penning Lolita s character, Nabokov imprinted several butterfly characteristics on her. This essay however does not seek to investigate the parallels between Lolita and the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Rather, it takes the road less travelled and examines the parallels between Nabokov and Humbert Humbert, not as a pervert, but as a scientist. Nabokov s interest in butterflies stemmed from a childhood obsession as he recalls chasing butterflies (Time) in Switzerland in 1964. While most people relinquishes their childhood hobbies, Nabokov pursued his interest in lepidopterology throughout his adult life where his passion for butterflies lead him to become a specialist in lepidopterist. As a scientist, Nabokov was acquainted to the clinical ways of science experiments and observations. While this is greatly illustrated in Humbert s interaction with Lolita in both cases, the former assumes the role of the scientist and the later the object of investigation Humbert s analytical nature is also reflected in relation to other characters and incidents including himself as Nabokov draws from his scientific persona in crafting Humbert s character. Another cause is ingestion of meat or other products from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (also known as mad cow disease). In the mid 1990 s scientists traced this type of CJD from cattle that were fed a diet comprised of processed brain tissue from other animals to individuals who consumed the beef. However, since its first description, less than 1% of cases were identified by acquiring the disease through exposure (Gozke et al. 2008). Below is a chart demonstrating the numbers of individuals diagnosed with CJD through the three categories described above in several different countries ( BSE Info , 2007): Symptoms of CJD usually occur after the age of 60 due to the destruction of brain cells which rapidly deteriorates and severely disables the patient eventually resulting in death (Kraft, 2014). Fortunately, they have been able to explore the use of process management functions to help reach their goals and keep their business successful. Nissan has used the five steps associated with Theory of Constraints (TOC ) and Total Quality Management (TQM) tools to help improve quality overall within the business. Nissan has also been able to analyze data through cause and effect diagrams, time function maps, and weighted averages to incorporate OM functions such as new products and future expansions. Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a group of data that deals with something that may limit or constrain a business s ability to achieve their goals (Linton, 2016). TOC is the idea that the weakest link will be the strongest you can be and when you improve the weakest link you will improve the process overall. The key to improving the constraint or the weakest link is to be able to recognize and manage those limitations with the five steps of TOC (Linton, 2016). The first step of TOC is to identify the constraints. Nissan would need to identify its constraint, which is the bottleneck in their production line. Step two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. The Development of Many Colors Essay As far back as the stone age men have looked for ways to share their lives and beliefs through art. Primitive drawings have been found in caves in Europe, Asia and Africa. The only thing missing was color to make the drawings more lifelike. By experimenting with plants, berries and minerals, men have developed beautiful colors that have been improved until we have the tempera, oils, acrylic and watercolor that artists use today. Tempera is the oldest paint medium known to man. Powered minerals, plants or clay were used for pigment and egg yolks were used as a binder. Sometimes, artists mixed the tempera with plaster to make frescoes on walls. Tempera paint is long lasting and does not change color over time like oils. The colors are ... Today s oil paint is a mixture of pigment(color), a binder which is usually linseed oil and a thinner which is usually turpentine(Oil Paint History). It was very hard to keep paint fresh during the early days of art. Before the nineteenth century artist or their assistants were required to mix fresh batches of paint every day. Then colormen began selling ready made paint in pig bladders. Artists had to punch a hole in the bladder to get the paint out and they put a tack in the hole to reseal it. In 1822 James Hams, an English artist, invented a glass syringe with a plunger to force the paint out. Finally, in 1841 the American artist John Goffe Rand invented and patented the squeezable tube with a twist cap. Today this invention is not only used for paint, it is also used for toothpaste, ointment, creams, etc(About.comPainting). Acrylic resin was invented by Dr. Otto Rohm in the 1930 s. • 26. Literary Analysis Of The Second Coming By William Butler... Humans crave validation and community yet rue the commonality of shared experiences with the masses. As civilizations rise and fall, repetition permeates each rendition not only in their creation but in their demise. In The Second Coming, William Butler Yeats, through allusions to biblical stories, ancient cultures, doctrinal clairvoyance, and spiritual life conveys an understanding that mankind holds much more power over its own story than the conscious mind believes. For clarity, it is necessary to examine the concept of the Second Coming and it s value to Yeats s poem as the speaker references it three times consecutively in lines eight through ten, Surely some revelation is at hand; / Surely the Second Coming is at hand. / The Second ... Biblical Egypt as its citizens once knew it ceased to exist, but the world in its entirety did not end. The Second Coming may simply be the end of a particular culture and nothing more than an event feared by those directly involved. For religious folk of a Christian bent in more contemporary times, Egypt is often viewed in a negative light and its rulers as oppressors of God s chosen people. Many people perceive it as simply the home of the pyramids; seldom is it considered as a cultural powerhouse to those outside of the field of history. The speaker in Yeat s poem alludes to Egypt through the image of the Great Sphinx in the lines Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert / A shape with lion body and the head of a man (13 14). The Egyptians were a brilliant minded people and knew much more than was attributed to them in Biblical texts. Lambda Legal Defense eve talks about how they will enforce gay marriage through the manipulation of the courts. The whole trend started in 1996 in Hawaii, with a ruling there saying theres no reason to ban gay civil marriages. The biggest problem, is that this is not the job of the Supreme Court Justices to decide, but elected representatives. In 20 years, the Supreme court has decided in two cases addressing constitutionality of state sodomy in Bowers v. Hardwick and Lawrence v. Texas. In Romers v. Evans, it ruled on a state constitution amendment. William F. Buckley wrote a response where in summary he is declaring the Supreme Court has no right to be in the bedroom of Americans. These theological issues often go through several turning points that help resolve their problems. After reading through this book, I found myself learning new information that has helped clear any misunderstandings that I had towards Christianity. I have a better understanding of the Christology of who Jesus was, the sacrament of Baptism, and the Eschatology of what the Kingdom of God is. Theological Turning Points made me feel more informed on who Jesus Christ was. Jesus is our savior who came down to earth to die for our sins, but I wasn t sure if Jesus was to be considered pro divine or pro human. I wasn t sure if Jesus was God taking a human form, or if he was truly human like every other person. Justin Martyr believed that Jesus preexisted as God and was made flesh of the virgin, being born as a man (McKim, 1988, pg. 27). Apollinarius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I always considered the Kingdom of God to be created when God returns to earth and begins his work in creating the new heaven and earth. However, this only half of what I learned from Theological Turning Points. John Calvin conceived the Kingdom of God in two ways. The Kingdom of God for Calvin has two senses: (1) the teaching the Gospel by which Christ gathers the church to himself and (2) the actual fellowship of the godly, who, have been united among themselves by the sincere faith of the Gospel (McKim, 1988, pg. 161 162). In the first sense, the kingdom of God has already been created when Christ died on the cross for our sins, but in the second sense, the world had not yet been united under God s banner. Instead of a strict set of rules, works under genres typically follow a loose set of guidelines. For example, movies under the horror genre typically employ suspense and mystery to give viewers a sense of unease and discomfort. One example of a genre is superhero fiction, chosen mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the protagonist or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the antagonist or villain also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Action scenes between the hero and the villain or the hero and the villain s grunts are a key part of superhero fiction. Another example of genres is science fiction which is chosen due to its wide prevalence in literature. Because genres are fluid, they frequently change to reflect the shifting expectations of readers or viewers. The superhero genre, for instance, evolved from simple stories involving the triumph of good over evil in its beginning to stories incorporating darker and grittier themes today. As the population shifted from rural areas to urban centers, families lived in smaller homes with less room to care for sick family members (Faulkner 1960, p. 509). Increasing requirements for licensing and accreditation, in addition to a rising demand for medical care, eventually led to rising costs. Through diplomacy, many states are searching for advanced support, methods, structures, and tools to combat internal threats and win war against terrorism (Phillips, Neal Webb, 2011). Diplomacy is an instrument of power that can build political will and foster international cooperation. Through diplomatic support, nations can promote counterterrorism assistance that serves mutual interests. In addition, diplomacy can help nations to fight against terrorists by controlling resources that terrorists need. The five common types of diplomacy counterterrorism strategies adopted by the U.S. include trainings, finance control programs, research, terrorist interdiction program, and foreign emergency support program. In training diplomacy, the aim is to train and equip foreign states to fight terrorists within and around their borders. Through these trainings, many states have established effective communication systems and have improved their border monitoring abilities (Peterson, 2012). I will advance the thesis that the Human Development Index (HDI) is a better measure of economic performance than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita. By saying that the HDI is a better system to measure economic performance, I mean that because the HDI highlights the trend between longevity, education and economic growth, it calculates a better analysis of an economy (Costa, Steckel 1997, p. 71). In contrast, the GDP per capita only accounts for the gross domestic product without paying any attention to other factors of an economy (Hawthorn, Sen 1997, p. 60). To begin, when a population is educated they will have the opportunity to adapt new technology and new ideas to enhance their productivity and output, which is an essential part of competing against other economies in the international arena. To be more specific, when a population is able to adapt new technology and idea they increase their speed of production, which, in turn, increases their output, which means, in simple terms, new technology and ideas increase an economy s growth because it allows them to produce more, faster and trade more, faster. This is best explained in Invest in Humans, Technological Diffusion, and Economic Growth that says, the better educated farmer is quicker to adopt profitable new processes and products since, for him, the expected payoff from innovation is likely to be greater and the risk likely to be smaller; for he is better able to discriminate between promising and unpromising ideas, and hence les likely to make mistakes (Nelson, Phelps 1966, p.70) , while the less educated farmer is prudent to delay the introduction of new technology until he has concrete evidence of its profitability, which is often from his ... Three different plates of 3T3 L1 cells were examined. 2 of the plates were grown then differentiated into adipocytes. After differentiation, these cells were fixed with formalin then one was stained with Oil Red O. The last plate was grown to confluency, but did not undergo differentiation before fixing with formalin. Through Sidney s extensive use of figurative language and repetition, it is made clear that the speaker clearly despises desire due to the horrible things desire can lead to. This expresses the idea that people must look inside themselves to gain true happiness rather than desiring for things that can never be. The speaker s negative attitude toward desire is established early on in the poem as the speaker compares desire to many dreadful things in an almost ironic way. Desire is first described as a blind man s mark, which creates a dark irony and sets the negative tone for the rest of the poem (1). A blind man would not be able to see his target, so therefore he would not be able to clearly aim at the target. Rather, he must shoot blindly and hope to hit the mark, which is what desire causes people to do. Desire can also be seen as a fool s self chosen snare, implying that those who desire are foolish because they chose to fall into the trap of desire rather than attempting to avoid it (1). These metaphors begin to characterize desire as foolish and something that one cannot control. The metaphors in the next line set up the speakers personal view on desire, as a fond fancy scum and dregs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Crisis workers need to understand the grieving process, use the Schneider s Growth Model and The Texas Revised Inventory of Grief. (TRIG)assessment as well as any intervention strategies for them to facilitate healing after the death of a loved one. Grieving Process One way for the crisis worker to help a person who has experienced a death of a loved one, they must understand the grieving process. A good way to that is to learn terms associated with loss. Some of the terms are bereavement, grief, mourning, uncomplicated bereavement and complicated grief or prolonged grief just to name a few. According to Brown and Goodman (2005), Bereavement is understood to be the experience of having lost a loved one to death and grief is the various emotional, physiological, cognitive and behavioral reactions to the loss and mourning is the cultural practices which express bereavement and grief. (Brown, E. J., Goodman, R. F. (2005). Reactions to death are unique to a person. The response depends on the several factors those being the severity of the loss, how close the ... • 45. Communication and Professional Relationships with... UNIT TDA 3.1 COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS 1.1. Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children and young adults because it helps the child to be able to communicate effectively with other people as they grow. Children react better to clear, concise communication and this in turn will help to build better relationships between child and adult and enable trust to grow, which is one of the key elements in building a relationship. It is also important to listen to the child and let them say what they want to say. Do not try to pre empt or interrupt them. Try to keep your language and explanation simple and to the point. Make them feel that what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The vital thing is to be aware of their abilities and, as I have said above, be clear when communicating, keep in mind what the child is capable of. Speak at their level and with eye contact. Always encourage them to respond and answer questions, this will help with confidence. When they get something right, praise them and make them feel good, this will also give them confidence. Also if they get something wrong, or misbehave, explain what they have done wrong in a positive way and explain what they could do to make it right. Repeat things if necessary and ensure that the child has understood. Ask questions in a way that encourages children and young adults to answer in full sentences which shows that they have understood what is being asked. 2.2 Age of child or young person: You need to be adaptable in the way you communicate when working with children and young adults. A young child will need clear and sometimes lengthy instructions on how to do something. Whereas older children and young adults tend to grasp things quicker and you can explain things in a more mature fashion. Some younger children like to have physical contact as well, especially if they feel lonely or scared i.e. when they are upset and trying to explain to you what is wrong, an arm around them or holding their hand will give them reassurance. Children of all ages need to feel secure and feel valued in any environment and how you communicate with them should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Informative Speech On Factory Farming It is possible, I think, to say that a Christian agriculture is formed upon the understanding that it is sinful for people to misuse or destroy what they did not make. The creation is a unique, irreplaceable gift, therefore to be used with humility, respect, and skill Wendell Berry (Berry, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture). This quote speaks numbers to me. I believe that agriculture, both animals and plants, should be farmed with humility, respect and skill, as said by Wendell Berry. It has, however, become a concern of mine that this is not the case in large industrial farms. The purpose of my speech is to persuade my audience that there is a need for large scale production of food to feed the growing population, but there needs to be some restrictions placed on certain practices in factory farming. I first became interested in agriculture when I joined 4 H and have since learned more through farming and studying animal science here at Penn State. Even though we need factory farming, factory farming should have restrictions because Confined Animal Feeding Operations and monoculture practices are doing more harm than good. Before we get started, I want to address and define a few key terms that I will be using throughout my speech. First term I want to address is factory farming. I may also refer to this as industrial farming or industrial agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, factory farming, or industrial agriculture is the system of chemically intensive food production developed in the decades after World War II, featuring enormous single crop farms and animal production facilities (Union of Concerned Scientists, Industrial Agriculture). The next important key term is Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a Confined Animal Feeding Operation is a large operation where animals are kept and raised in confined situations (USDA, Animal Feeding Operations). The final term I want to define before starting is monoculture. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, monoculture is the cultivation or growth of a single crop or organism especially on agriculture or forest land (Merriam Webster, monoculture). Now ... • 47. Critique Of Practical Reason By Immanuel Kant In Critique of Practical Reason, Immanuel Kant gives an argument for the existence of God based on practical reason and the moral law. He argues that reason strives for the highest good, which is a connection between virtue and happiness (Kant 89). Practical reason runs into an issue when striving for the highest good, however, because there is no apparent connection between virtue and happiness in the natural world, which ultimately causes us to reject the moral law (Kant 92). According to Kant, however, we cannot reject the moral law because this would be rejecting our rationality (Kant 93). This is because Kant believes that all rational beings must act morally and follow the moral law as a result of reason. This leads Kant to posit the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we strive for happiness to try to achieve virtue, our actions are not actually virtuous, according to Kant, because virtue must come from striving for duty, not happiness (Kant 92). However, we also cannot strive for virtue to attain happiness because we do not experience the connection between virtue and happiness (Kant 92). This is a problem because Kant is a transcendental idealist, meaning that he thinks that we are limited to objects of experience in what we can have knowledge of. Since we do not experience the connection between virtue and happiness, and we cannot know if there is actually a connection beyond what we can experience, we run into the problem of having to assume that there is no connection. This causes us to reject the moral law because we are natural beings, in that we cannot reject happiness, but naturally strive for it (Kant 92). Kant argues that rejecting the moral law is not an option, however, because, by doing this, we would be giving up our humanity, since he believes that morality stems from human reason (Kant 93). Therefore, there must be a connection between virtue and happiness so that we do not have to reject the moral law. This connection must be made because it would not be rational to strive for the highest good if it was not possible to do so, and this is what makes it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
