Dramatic Irony In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born July 4th, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, an area still steepled with the
Puritanical religion. As previously stated, Nathaniel Hawthorne was the grandson to two we ll know
Puritan preachers, one who trailed and condemned people during the Salem Witch Trials. Hawthorne
was raised by his mother, a single widow, and by a household full of women. Trying to escape this
side of the family, Hawthorne added the w to his name as to avoid being considered related to the
Hathornes before him, as if trying to avoid the shame and negative connotations coming with the
name. Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter in 1850 after being fired from his job in the Salems
Customs House, forced to write as a living. Many people were outraged after reading the novel as it
criticized Puritanical religion, which Hawthorne hadn t noticed until afterwards, and brought to light
these hypocritical things people didn t want to see. Many people disliked Hawthorne as he criticized
women writers harshly and in general didn t like the way some women lived their life such as his
feminist friend Margaret Fuller. It also confused people as he criticized these women yet seemed to
sympathize with Hester in the novel. Hawthorne seems to be a huge fan of irony in this novel as
almost every chapter includes dramatic irony, which is when the audience understands what is
happening but the characters don t. He uses dramatic irony having to do with religion, due to the fact
that this is the

Colonialism Of Cherokees And The Cherokee Indians And...
Throughout history, we see various forms of colonialism that have happened in the world. Multiple
groups of people were affected by this act of colonizing. An example of the groups that were affected
would include the Cherokees and the Mayans. Both of these groups of people experienced colonialism
in similar ways, either by adaptation or resistance nevertheless they still had their differences.
Although both the Cherokees and the Mayans experience of colonialism occurred in different time
periods, their use of adaptation was used as a source of defense against their invaders. An example of
this would be the way Cherokee women reacted to the building of mission schools on Cherokee land.
They first viewed it as a threat to their role as Cherokee mothers. Once they began to understand the
expectations and goals the missionaries had, they maneuvered their children around these white
standards to keep their security while still having them in school. (Smith, 404). They found the benefit
if they conformed to this idea of civilized behavior the Europeans had. However, the Mayans didn t
encounter the use of schools on their land rather they encountered the use of labor. The use of forced
labor was often applied, but the Cakchiquel (a certain group of Mayans) found a way around it by
using the tacagual and peyobal methods. The tacagual method was where one Indian would pay
another to do his work, while the peyobal method was where an Indian would pay his town justices to

Autism Spectrum Disorder ( Asd ) Essay
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a range of conditions grouped under the neurodevelopmental
disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5) published in 2013
(Kress Paylo, 2015). Those who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder must present two types
of symptoms: 1) Deficits in social communication and social interaction and 2) Restricted, repetitive
patterns of behavior, interests or activities (APA, 2013). The DSM 5 merged all autism disorders into
one diagnosis of ASD. Before this publication, they were organized as distinct subtypes, which
included autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not
otherwise specified (PDD NOS) and Asperger syndrome (Kress Paylo, 2015).
The Current Understanding of Disorder and Causes
Autism may be connected to early brain development but notable signs and symptoms of the disorder
have the propensity to manifest around 1 3 years old (APA, 2013). This disorder can at times be linked
to intellectual disability, motor coordination and attention difficulties as well as physical health issues
including sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances (CITE).
Researchers have found that ASD appears to follow two likely developmental courses, the first
development being a gradual progression, parents describe growing or potential concerns in
development over the first two years of life and diagnosis is made around 3 4 years old. Potential early

Informative Speech On Head Injury
Hello, I am Jennifer Riley and I am a student from University of Maryland. I hope all is well. I am
writing to you concerning the impact of head injuries on soccer players.
Today injuries in sports is a common topic. A sprained ankle, broken finger, bruised knee are all
afflictions commonly known to the players and spectators; however, not all are informed about the
severity of head trauma. In sports, there are concussive incidents: hits to the head causing the brain to
violently shake damaging brain cells to the point where they can no longer be used. In the game of
soccer this can occur when colliding with another player or direct contact to the head. Recovery for
athletes with concussions is generally quick, but in some scenarios symptoms ... Show more content

For instance, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a progressive degenerative disease commonly
found in the brains of athletes with a known past of recurring brain distress. The injury ignites a
buildup of the abnormal tau protein, causing a progressive worsening of the mental state. Previous
recorded cases have shown the location of damage was significant as well as remarkably distinct from
other damaged brains. Nonetheless, not all athletes with head injuries are diagnosed with CTE. The
symptoms of this disorder are very similar to those of dementia and Alzheimer s disease. The most
prevalent indicators include impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and impaired
judgement. These symptoms usually begin many years after a person s involvement in athletics.
Brain trauma is extremely dangerous and in some cases fatal. It is imperative for anyone participating
in sports to learn the signs and symptoms of a concussion as well as the long term effects. Educating
the youth of these consequences will teach them that it is key to abstain from high intensity, contact
sports until completely healed to ensure their best possible health. Thank you for your time and I hope
to hear from you

Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child
Introduction In John Gottman s, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, it is found that teaching
children to regulate and understand their emotions is important in order to create an emotionally
healthy generation. Emotional intelligence, which is referred to as an IQ of people and the world of
feelings (Gottman 17), contributes to the success of life emotionally, socially, and mentally of oneself.
According to Gottman, there are multiple contributing factors that influence a child s emotional
intelligence which are parents and their parenting style, parent s emotional expression, a parent s
interest or relationship with the child specifically between father and child, and the influences of the
parent s relationship on the child. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Connections to Psychology 135 One of the main topics this book focuses on is the social aspect of
relationships, regarding parent to child, parent to parent, and child to peer. In the psychology 135 class
there has been discussion in regards to importance and significance of having healthy or open
communication in relationships. An important concept that has been discussed when it comes to
communication in gender differences is report vs. rapport. According to the course text, Marriages,
Families, Relationships: Making Choices in a Diverse Society by Mary Ann Lamanna and Agnes
Riedmann, Report talk is what men typically engage in which is mainly aimed at conveying
information, Rapport is what women usually engage in by speaking to gain or reinforce intimacy or
connection with others (Lamanna 328). In other words report is used in order to gain a solution while
rapport is used to gain or foster intimacy. When connecting this information to

Journey s End by RC Sheriff Essay
Journey s End R.C Sherriff uses the characters in his play Journey s End to create tension and drama.
In the opening scene Sherriff uses Osborne, an elderly man who is second in command of the
company that s coming on duty, and Hardy, the captain of the company that is coming off duty, to set
the scene. Hardy starts to do this when pointing out features on a map of the front line, Here we are,
we hold two hundred yards of front line. We have a lewis gun here and one in this little sap here and
sentry posts where the crosses are . Sherriff also uses Hardy and Osborne to give an insight into the
character, Stanhope s, personality and to describe the living conditions in the front line. He first does

; he s a splendid chap! From that you can determine that Hardy thinks Stanhope is a drunk and that he
is a joke to the company, whereas Osborne tries to be loyal to Stanhope by protecting him from Hardy
s verbal abuse. In scene two, the relationship between Osborne and Raleigh help us to understand
more about Stanhope and why Osborne is so protective of him. They give us more infomation on what
life in the trenches is like. When Raleigh first enters he acts like he is inexperienced because Osborne
has to tell him Sit down, won t you? and I should take your pack off. Osborne then starts to act as a
fatherly figure by saying to Raleigh My name s Osborne. I m second in command of the company.
You only call me sir in front of the men... You ll find the other officers call me Uncle . After then
talking about just arriving in the trenches Osborne mentions Stanhope Captain Stanhope is in charge

The Sale Of Foreign Arms
POSITION PAPER
ON
THE SALE OF FOREIGN ARMS
1. This paper will argue that, in its current state, the sale of foreign arms does not support United
States (US) foreign policy. The sale of US arms exacerbates conflict in the Middle East and
contributes to human rights abuses.1 The Obama administration implemented a Conventional Arms
Transfer Policy in 2014 to control arms sales and prevent human rights abuses while providing the
weapons countries need to defend themselves in order to prevent the need for US boots on the
ground.2 However, these measures are not enough and US weapons can and do still end up in the
hands of terrorists.1
2. The Obama administration has approved more major arms deals by almost $30 billion in its initial
five ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Countries in the area have hoarded, are using, and are asking for more American arms. These events
have unleashed the possibility of a dangerous new arms race in areas of turmoil and changing
alliances.3 Some of the arms the United States sold to the region are being used in conflicts. Saudi
Arabia uses Boeing F 15 fighters to strike Yemen and the United Arab Emirates is flying Lockheed
Martin F 16 s to bomb Yemen and Syria.3 Saudi Arabia in particular has committed human rights
abuses in its air war in Yemen. Amnesty International has called on the US to cease selling bombs,
fighter jets, and combat helicopters to Saudi Arabia. According to the United Nations High
Commissioner for Human Rights, the conflict between Saudi Arabia and anti government rebels has
killed thousands of civilians, and two thirds of those lives were claimed by Saudi air strikes.4
4. The United States has not ignored the role foreign arms sales play in human rights violations. In
2014, President Obama issued a directive called Conventional Arms Transfer Policy. It clearly
expresses that the United States should not sell military arms to countries that are unstable enough that
they might turn the weapons against the US or its allies. The policy calls for officials to examine the
risk that the recipient of the arms would use them to commit human rights violations or that the arms

Henry Hudson s Impact On The World
Henry Hudson was an English sailor, who studied navigation. Further data of his past life is
nonexistent, but he was married with three kids and lived in England. Hudson was born around circa
1565. Hudson went on four voyages to discover a Northern trade route from England to the china.
Instead he found a shorter route to the Americas. His boat was named Hopewell. June 1611 Henry
Hudson died to mutiny on his last voyage. His crew got cold feet and threw Hudson and his son on a
lifeboat, leaving them adrift in the hudson bay. He started his voyages in 1607, on his first two
voyages he was blocked by ice and had to turn around. Along theses voyages Henry Hudson impacted
the world we live in today. The Hudson bay was named after Henry because he discovered the bay. On
his third and fourth voyage he used rumors of routes. The Moscovy Company had funded Henrys
voyage. Henry s first and second voyage didn t involve too much excitement. Along his first and
second voyages he embarked upon empty dreams and failure. He sailed past greenland and iceland but
was forced to turn around due to ice blockage. He commenced another voyage with the same
company, this would affect his future life. Due to more ice along the way, he was forced to turn around

Thomas Hardy in his short stories The Withered Arm , Tony Kytes, the

There are also examples of oppression in other Hardy short stories, such as Tony Kytes, the Arch
Deceiver where he is in a humourous dilemma of which of the three women in his wagon he should

her into a witch because she has a child without a husband. This Rhoda Brook is a typical victim of
Hardy s short stories, isolated and an outcast of society from an early age after being used and left by
Farmer Lodge. She doesn t even get any respect from her son, which was probably due to a bad
upbringing, due to her obsession with Farmer Lodge ever since he discarded her. When we join the
story of The Withered Arm she is already an old outcast that s well past her prime and when it says

Tic. Tic. Tic. The movement is regular and unchanging. It s constant and never ending. Tic. Tic. Tic. I

My body is still for a second as I use all my concentration to make it obey. But then my control slips

neurological disorder that causes involuntary movements called tics. I tic about every twenty seconds,
which means thousands of times a day my muscles twitch and jerk, causing pain and fatigue. My tics
are not as severe as some, but it is embarrassing to give a presentation in class when I know will pause
and stutter through much of it. It would be easy to be swallowed up in despair at my inability to

A Critique Of The Social Contract
A Critique of the Social Contract According To John Locke
Introduction
John Locke embedded his political ideas in the form of two treatises popularly known as Two
Treatises on Civil Government that he authored in 1690. In the first treatise, Locke disagrees with the
political and social philosophy of Robert Filmer in his work known as Patriacha, authored in 1654.
The second treatise contains Locke s viewpoint on political philosophy where he expounds the origin,
authority and the significance of a civil government. In addition, the treatise contains his view on the
state of nature, the social contract, political groupings, types of government and a citizen s right to
own private property.
The Social Contract Theory
Unlike his predecessor, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, human beings can be depended upon based on the fact that they are rational. Unlike
Hobbes, Locke believed that human beings are unselfish and social. It is only in exceptional cases that
some human beings are selfish, overly competitive and aggressive otherwise; most human beings are
able to rule themselves through the law of nature or through rational thinking. Human beings are born
free and are equal. The presence of reason in human beings ensures that they remain rational in their
dealings. This factor enables human beings to discover the right behavior as seen in their control of
emotions, anger, and expression of love among others. Instinctively, man desires to live in peace and
harmony with fellow men.
In regard to the state of nature, Locke contrasts Hobbes by asserting that there was law, order, peace
and private property. Political legitimacy and power is derived from the state of nature since according
to Locke, man has always lived in perfect equality and freedom where human beings order their
actions and use their property within the confines of the law of nature. However, the state of nature
does not imply misuse of liberty but using such liberty for the good of self

Ratio Analysis
WBC and CBA vary in their sizes of assets, retained earnings and other financial figures. Ratio

In our investment decision making process, relevant ratios such as percentage return, reward to risk

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you

from To Kill a Mocking Bird along with other. Specifically, coming of age includes when one sees
from other point of view, acknowledges that the world does not always work as one wish, and
understands that there are consequences of one s action. Beside the given quotation above, there is one

It is seen that now how racism cloud the judgment in Maycomb people toward Tom s death. Despise
how good a citizen he is, it is all useless to prove Tom is innocent with all the crazy idea that acting

World War I, along with World War II and the rise of Marxist Leninist states in Russia and China, is
one of the defining moments of the 20th century. Parts of Europe lay in devastation and the United
States found itself in an increasingly prominent place on the world stage. The United States decision
to intervene in World War I meant that American soldiers would be fighting in foreign lands under
brutal conditions. All aspects of society were rapidly changing as developments in technology and
changing economic conditions redefined every part of everyday life. These developments along with
World War I allow for the birth of Modernism. Modernism represents the uncertainty drudgery of
contemporary life and the desire to achieve a new social order capable of overcoming the failures of
the past. Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald present readers with two different accounts of
modern life rooted in the same context of American life. European Modernism and American
Modernism, while sharing broadly similar characteristics, engage in different projects. In Europe, T.S.
Eliot and Ezra Pound found potential solutions in Conservatism (involving Eliot s concern with
tradition) and new modes of organic social organization (represented by Pound s acceptance of
Fascism). The Dadaists and Italian Futurists adopted a subversive and negative eye towards the
present in desire for the future. Abstract artists and atonal composers were examining ways to
represent a search for truth in a way that overcame the bourgeois art and music of the past. In
America, life was dominated by an explosion of wealth and prosperity in the wake of World War I. In
some instances, soldiers and citizens became expatriates. Hemingway and Fitzgerald stand out as
representatives of two parts of American Modernism. Fitzgerald focuses on life in the United States in
all of its excess and search for deeper connection amid vapidity. Hemingway shows the life of the post
war American who is aware of the change in the world and strives for enjoyment and direction in
activities like bull fighting, hunting, love, and drinking. Fitzgerald s Winter Dreams and Hemingway s
Hills Like White Elephants exemplify both author s different focus and account

Analysis Of Rosie The Riveter During World War II
During World War II, there were many posters to persuade individuals to help the workforce, some
specifically targeting women. In one of the posters, we can do it, a woman named Rosie the Riveter is
exhibited showing her muscles to display her strength. The main attention is the woman s strong arm
and caption to exemplify the strength of a female and how underestimated they are in the real world.
The poster has very glaring colors and the bandana on the woman s head makes her seem somewhat
rebellious and a powerful leader. Her pulled up sleeves demonstrates her independence as a woman
and how she can do more than what people expect of her. This image portrays patriotic womanhood to
give women more of a voice during the war rather than them being limited to only working inside
their homes. In the photo, longing won t bring him back it shows a woman holding letters from her
husband and she feels this longing for her husband to return from war. However, since the title says
Longing him won t bring him back sooner, get a war job basically telling the woman that by getting a
job, she will not only be helping the workforce, but it will help her stay distracted from missing her
husband. Also, in the poster victory awaits on your fingers, an American girl is shown to encourage
woman to find jobs in war production to keep woman in the workforce. The meaning behind the
poster s title is that for there to be actual success, women needs to take responsibility outside and do

The Importance Of Pollution
Listed in the Webster Dictionary, pollution: the presence in or introduction into the environment of a
substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects. Over the years pollution has become a
growing epidemic that, when taken into the proper hands, can be stopped. Many citizens would argue
that caring for the earth is too much work, unrealistic to solve, and unaffordable. Citizens should
understand that earth is an amazing home and should not be taken for granted. Despite most people
not seeing the earth as dying, but rather see it as a home, the government should require conservation
for all citizens because of Earth s dangerous, current condition, future generations, and preventable
outcomes. With earth s unstable conditions growing, government officials need to implement
conservation by advocating all citizens to put an end to pollution. Even though all the problems are
not going to be solved within a day, it is still necessary to understand and learn about crises such as
this one. The author says, the economy thrives off of, general equilibrium models (Source D).
Unstable conditions will last over time, but with a little push by the government it forces people to
become aware of different problems and makes them take baby steps in solving the epidemic. Carbon
dioxide is one of the leading causes in the destruction of the ozone layer, through the reduction of this
harmful gas it can help the earths unstable condition. In the text, people use more energy that

Tammany Hall Gambling
State and federal laws preventing lotteries had a profound unintended consequence. There is a long
history of illegal gambling proceeds corrupting politics and one of the most appropriate examples
involves the Democratic Party political machine of New York City, Tammany Hall. Zachariah
Simmons built a very organized network with hundreds of policy shops throughout New York City. In
just one week, the gross receipts totaled $1 million and a great deal of those profits trickled down to
the local political bosses. Tammany Hall ruled politics in New York City for decades by a few simple
means corruption and voter fraud. For example, Tammany Hall literally released prisoners from the
penitentiary to vote for them in the election of 1843. William ... Show more content on

the secretive commission included Frank Farrell (New York City gambling mogul), a State Senator,

at least $300 for a license, which was collected by the local precinct captain. There was no pretense
with these licenses as there were no regulations in place to protect consumers. This was simply a
lucrative bribery system amounting to $3,095,000 for the year of 1900, according to the The New

Sustainable Development And Wyss s Turmoil In The Galapagos
After reading the excerpt from Honey s Ecotourism and Sustainable Development and Wyss s Turmoil
in Paradise Galapagos fishermen revolt against strict quota on lobster, it has become very clear to me
that the Galapagos are a fragile country that is being treated in the harshest ways. The Galapagos are
most notoriously known for the inspiration of Darwin s theory of evolution because of its unique
diversity in same species, as well as being the home for several other rare species. This fame,
understandably, spiked the interest in the islands, thus increasing the tourism numbers with a growth
in interest from a variety of scientists and tourists.

The Smart Voyager, a certification program in the Galapagos, sought to reduce the damage tour boats
had on the environment without doing away with them completely. The International Safety
Management certification is another one that was required by all tourism companies to ensure the
utmost safety for prospective tourists. The islands that receive the most tourism suffer from vegetation
loss, erosion, and animal behavioral changes. The Galapagos National Park Service will sometimes
shut down exploration of these sites in order to help those places recover a little from the damage.
This, to me, only seems like a temporary fix for these places; the tourism is most likely only going to
grow and the islands are going to need to find a way to keep up with it. Especially with the
introduction of cruise ships, the chances of invasive species being introduced onto the islands is
extremely high because of the different types of bacteria, fungi, and various other plant and animal
species that can harbor on the boats. The government put in various regulations to help prevent these
such as a complete inspection of the boat from bow to stern, but that is not always a trusting fix, as
some inspectors have the chance to miss things. Invasive species are the most detrimental factor to
biodiversity and habitat loss; feral goats are

Civil War And The Era Of Reconstruction
Between 1860 and 1877, the era of reconstruction in America had been ineffably prominent with
societal and constitutional change. Between achievements such as the Freedmen s Bureau of 1865,
helping recently freed slaves, to the 14th amendment establishing a set equal rights, multiple
advancements to the country had been created. While the dilemmas of the reconstruction period were
often caused by the Northern versus Southern ideals after fighting a bloody Civil War, or tackling
racial inequality, the question of constitutionality of the era s laws were regarded as the essential piece
to the time s strife. Moreover, there was often argument if whether the federal government, morally
and constitutionality, was privileged to decide on laws not explicitly stated in the Constitution.
Supporters of federal government heavy ruling often debated with those in support of sovereign states,
leading to deeper issues then who was creating rules. Important topics of the era like allowing state
government to decide on race issues such as black suffrage, or the enforcement of the Black Codes
started at the root of power. With these adverse differences in who should first hold and manifest the
power of the nation, great revolutionary debates, ideals, and attacks transpired. These various
constitutional and social evolutions catalyzed into a revolution regarding the state and federal power
in the nation.

Brain Tumor Research Paper
Brain tumor
Clinical feature
A brain tumor is an abnormal development of tissue in the brain or central spine, which is accountable
for appropriate brain functionality. Brain and spinal cord tumors are atypical growths of tissue found
inside the skull or the bony spinal column, which are the chief constituents of the central nervous
system (CNS). Benign tumors are noncancerous and malignant tumors are cancerous. The central
nervous system (CNS) is accommodated within rigid, bony quarters (i.e., the skull and spinal column),
so any uncharacteristic growth, whether benign or malignant, can place burden on sensitive tissues
and damage function. Tumors that instigate in the brain or spinal cord are called primary tumors.
Causes
Most primary tumors are triggered by out of control growth amid cells that surround and support
neurons. In a trifling number of individuals, primary tumors might arise from particular genetic

A Short Note On The De La Literatura

Scripture Is The Infallible Word Of God Essay
Scripture
I believe that scripture is the infallible Word of God, divinely inspired by God through human hands,
for the teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training of Christians and forming the basis of the Christian
life and guiding them on the path to Christ. I believe that scripture is infallible rather than inerrant,
because human writers through which God spoke can still make mistakes. However, Matthew 24:35
reminds us that God s word is true in all ages and places. 2 Timothy 3:16 gives reasons why it is
import for believes to use the scripture such as teaching and correcting. Scripture guides us along the
path we should as evidences by Psalms 119:105 comparing Scripture to a lamp to show us the way. I
have also personal experienced the wisdom that the scriptures can offer to those who need guidance. I
also believe that scripture should be the main point of guidance, which is something that my church
has taught me such I was young. Matthew 7:24 instructs us to build our house on the rock (scripture)
which is the most solid place to rest our life.
Father
I believe that the Father is the first, yet equal, part of the trinity, the perfect, unchanging Creator God
who rules over the universe as the highest power. He always has been and always will be the eternal
master of humanity. I believe and have been taught by my church to believe, that God is part of the

Summary Of The Book Collapse By Jared Diamond
Collapse Book Review
In Collapse, Jared Diamond explores the demise of different civilizations throughout history and the
signs that might portend for today s societies. The most evident and recurring themes are: climate
change, environmental damage, friendly trade partners and hostile neighbors. Whether it is one or
multiple of these factors that causes a society s collapse, these four points of Diamond s suggested five
point framework are consistently relevant to the collapse of a society. Diamond thoroughly examines
the history of collapses of civilizations ranging from the Mayan Empire to modern China. Throughout
the book Diamond works to answer the question, Why is it that some societies collapsed while others
did not collapse? The following themes, discussed by Jared Diamond as the main factors in a
civilization s success or failure, are explored and explained in the past to provide a better outlook on
the status of our future: environmental damage, climate change, and neighbors including trade
partners.

A Report On The United States s Nationwide Prison Population
According to [http://felonvoting.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=000286] only two states
allow felons to vote while in prison. This is quite alarming, especially considering that America s
nationwide prison population, since 1980, has increased by nearly 800 percent. This increase is due to
harsher punishments for non violent crimes, resulting in more than 1.57 million inmates being
imprisoned in federal, state, and local prisons and jails at any given time. In addition, an estimated 12
million Americans cycle through the U.S judicial system for sentences less than one year in length,
raising the estimated overall imprisonment rate, at any given date, to 2.4 million. These inmates, in
addition to those barred from voting due to past felony convictions, make up approximately 2.5
percent of the nation s voting population, according to a report by The Sentencing Project.

  • 2. Dramatic Irony In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne was born July 4th, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, an area still steepled with the Puritanical religion. As previously stated, Nathaniel Hawthorne was the grandson to two we ll know Puritan preachers, one who trailed and condemned people during the Salem Witch Trials. Hawthorne was raised by his mother, a single widow, and by a household full of women. Trying to escape this side of the family, Hawthorne added the w to his name as to avoid being considered related to the Hathornes before him, as if trying to avoid the shame and negative connotations coming with the name. Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter in 1850 after being fired from his job in the Salems Customs House, forced to write as a living. Many people were outraged after reading the novel as it criticized Puritanical religion, which Hawthorne hadn t noticed until afterwards, and brought to light these hypocritical things people didn t want to see. Many people disliked Hawthorne as he criticized women writers harshly and in general didn t like the way some women lived their life such as his feminist friend Margaret Fuller. It also confused people as he criticized these women yet seemed to sympathize with Hester in the novel. Hawthorne seems to be a huge fan of irony in this novel as almost every chapter includes dramatic irony, which is when the audience understands what is happening but the characters don t. He uses dramatic irony having to do with religion, due to the fact that this is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Colonialism Of Cherokees And The Cherokee Indians And... Throughout history, we see various forms of colonialism that have happened in the world. Multiple groups of people were affected by this act of colonizing. An example of the groups that were affected would include the Cherokees and the Mayans. Both of these groups of people experienced colonialism in similar ways, either by adaptation or resistance nevertheless they still had their differences. Although both the Cherokees and the Mayans experience of colonialism occurred in different time periods, their use of adaptation was used as a source of defense against their invaders. An example of this would be the way Cherokee women reacted to the building of mission schools on Cherokee land. They first viewed it as a threat to their role as Cherokee mothers. Once they began to understand the expectations and goals the missionaries had, they maneuvered their children around these white standards to keep their security while still having them in school. (Smith, 404). They found the benefit if they conformed to this idea of civilized behavior the Europeans had. However, the Mayans didn t encounter the use of schools on their land rather they encountered the use of labor. The use of forced labor was often applied, but the Cakchiquel (a certain group of Mayans) found a way around it by using the tacagual and peyobal methods. The tacagual method was where one Indian would pay another to do his work, while the peyobal method was where an Indian would pay his town justices to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Autism Spectrum Disorder ( Asd ) Essay Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a range of conditions grouped under the neurodevelopmental disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5) published in 2013 (Kress Paylo, 2015). Those who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder must present two types of symptoms: 1) Deficits in social communication and social interaction and 2) Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities (APA, 2013). The DSM 5 merged all autism disorders into one diagnosis of ASD. Before this publication, they were organized as distinct subtypes, which included autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD NOS) and Asperger syndrome (Kress Paylo, 2015). The Current Understanding of Disorder and Causes Autism may be connected to early brain development but notable signs and symptoms of the disorder have the propensity to manifest around 1 3 years old (APA, 2013). This disorder can at times be linked to intellectual disability, motor coordination and attention difficulties as well as physical health issues including sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances (CITE). Researchers have found that ASD appears to follow two likely developmental courses, the first development being a gradual progression, parents describe growing or potential concerns in development over the first two years of life and diagnosis is made around 3 4 years old. • 5. Informative Speech On Head Injury Hello, I am Jennifer Riley and I am a student from University of Maryland. I hope all is well. I am writing to you concerning the impact of head injuries on soccer players. Today injuries in sports is a common topic. A sprained ankle, broken finger, bruised knee are all afflictions commonly known to the players and spectators; however, not all are informed about the severity of head trauma. In sports, there are concussive incidents: hits to the head causing the brain to violently shake damaging brain cells to the point where they can no longer be used. In the game of soccer this can occur when colliding with another player or direct contact to the head. Recovery for athletes with concussions is generally quick, but in some scenarios symptoms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a progressive degenerative disease commonly found in the brains of athletes with a known past of recurring brain distress. The injury ignites a buildup of the abnormal tau protein, causing a progressive worsening of the mental state. Previous recorded cases have shown the location of damage was significant as well as remarkably distinct from other damaged brains. Nonetheless, not all athletes with head injuries are diagnosed with CTE. The symptoms of this disorder are very similar to those of dementia and Alzheimer s disease. The most prevalent indicators include impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and impaired judgement. These symptoms usually begin many years after a person s involvement in athletics. Brain trauma is extremely dangerous and in some cases fatal. It is imperative for anyone participating in sports to learn the signs and symptoms of a concussion as well as the long term effects. Educating the youth of these consequences will teach them that it is key to abstain from high intensity, contact sports until completely healed to ensure their best possible health. An important concept that has been discussed when it comes to communication in gender differences is report vs. rapport. According to the course text, Marriages, Families, Relationships: Making Choices in a Diverse Society by Mary Ann Lamanna and Agnes Riedmann, Report talk is what men typically engage in which is mainly aimed at conveying information, Rapport is what women usually engage in by speaking to gain or reinforce intimacy or connection with others (Lamanna 328). In the opening scene Sherriff uses Osborne, an elderly man who is second in command of the company that s coming on duty, and Hardy, the captain of the company that is coming off duty, to set the scene. Hardy starts to do this when pointing out features on a map of the front line, Here we are, we hold two hundred yards of front line. The sale of US arms exacerbates conflict in the Middle East and contributes to human rights abuses.1 The Obama administration implemented a Conventional Arms Transfer Policy in 2014 to control arms sales and prevent human rights abuses while providing the weapons countries need to defend themselves in order to prevent the need for US boots on the ground.2 However, these measures are not enough and US weapons can and do still end up in the hands of terrorists.1 2. Amnesty International has called on the US to cease selling bombs, fighter jets, and combat helicopters to Saudi Arabia. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the conflict between Saudi Arabia and anti government rebels has killed thousands of civilians, and two thirds of those lives were claimed by Saudi air strikes.4 4. The United States has not ignored the role foreign arms sales play in human rights violations. In 2014, President Obama issued a directive called Conventional Arms Transfer Policy. It clearly expresses that the United States should not sell military arms to countries that are unstable enough that they might turn the weapons against the US or its allies. The policy calls for officials to examine the risk that the recipient of the arms would use them to commit human rights violations or that the arms ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Similarities Between Modernism And European Modernism World War I, along with World War II and the rise of Marxist Leninist states in Russia and China, is one of the defining moments of the 20th century. Parts of Europe lay in devastation and the United States found itself in an increasingly prominent place on the world stage. The United States decision to intervene in World War I meant that American soldiers would be fighting in foreign lands under brutal conditions. All aspects of society were rapidly changing as developments in technology and changing economic conditions redefined every part of everyday life. These developments along with World War I allow for the birth of Modernism. Modernism represents the uncertainty drudgery of contemporary life and the desire to achieve a new social order capable of overcoming the failures of the past. Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald present readers with two different accounts of modern life rooted in the same context of American life. European Modernism and American Modernism, while sharing broadly similar characteristics, engage in different projects. In Europe, T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound found potential solutions in Conservatism (involving Eliot s concern with tradition) and new modes of organic social organization (represented by Pound s acceptance of Fascism). The Dadaists and Italian Futurists adopted a subversive and negative eye towards the present in desire for the future. Abstract artists and atonal composers were examining ways to represent a search for truth in a way that overcame the bourgeois art and music of the past. In America, life was dominated by an explosion of wealth and prosperity in the wake of World War I. In some instances, soldiers and citizens became expatriates. Hemingway and Fitzgerald stand out as representatives of two parts of American Modernism. Fitzgerald focuses on life in the United States in all of its excess and search for deeper connection amid vapidity. Hemingway shows the life of the post war American who is aware of the change in the world and strives for enjoyment and direction in activities like bull fighting, hunting, love, and drinking.
