St Paul Cathedral Research Paper
Main Body #3: Next in this paragraph I will be discussing the history of St. Paul Cathedral. This
building has a long history events starting in 1561.Before the Great Fire the St. Paul s Cathedral was
called the old St. Paul s , one of the largest Christian cathedrals in Europe. This 19th century (middle
ages) building was 178 meters long, and 149 meters high, till it was struck in 1561 by lightning. The
Greek cross design was made after the London Great Fire. Wren started to be more smart and
thoughtful between the 16th to 17th century of English cathedral design. The great model was
remarkable for two reasons, the classical style of Italian renaissance, and the centrally planned
designs. The Warrant design. It was created in the 16th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about The Zulu Clan
The Zulu Clan
In the 1820 s, during a period of social unrest and warfare, the Zulu clan, a Bantu people, rose to
political prominence under the great King Shaka in present day South Africa. This period is called
mfecane, or crushing because it was characterized by Shaka s tyrannous reign during which he
conquered neighboring peoples and established a kingdom for the Zulu people on South Africa s
eastern coast. The word zulu was used in 1824 to refer to a war like race of South African Blacks .
(Ngubane, 1977) The British characterization of Shaka as a monster, however, is now seen as a
propagandist attempt to disguise their own interests in procuring land and labor in the region. In fact,
much of the violent disruption ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering the social trauma associated with colonialism and apartheid the Zulu responded by
clinging more tenaciously to their heritage as a means of psychological survival in a society which
systematically degraded and disrespected them as a people. Berglund (1976) points out that it is the
rituals and symbols of a society which express the relationships between members of that society and
makes living in that society a meaningful experience. The focus of this paper will be centered on
traditional Zulu spiritual beliefs and, to whatever extent possible, not those adapted to Western
thought. In providing first the basic cosmological beliefs and then moving on to the central theme of
traditional spiritual beliefs involving deceased ancestors and their role in Zulu society, my goal will be
to demonstrate how social harmony is maintained as a result of the observance of these spiritual
beliefs and practices. According to traditional belief, uMveliqangi, the Lord of the Sky, emerged full
blown from the reeds in the realm of the sky. Man later emerged from the reeds and was let down to
earth through a hole in the floor of the sky. This explains the origin of the Zulu clan name, zulu
meaning of the sky . The Lord of the Sky then sent a chameleon down to earth to tell the people that
they will not die. Later on, he sent a

Western Culture Has Brought More Negative Impacts On The Malaysian Youth.
Western culture is a body of knowledge derived from reason that began in Ancient Greece. There and
in the Roman civilization it developed until the start of the Middle Ages when it largely vanished from
Europe. During the Middle Ages, Western culture resided, instead, in the Arab / Persian world to a
modest degree. Today, Western culture has at least some presence in nearly all nations of the world. It
does not currently exist, however, anywhere in a perfect and complete form. Wherever Western culture
exists, it is at least partially mixed, and often largely mixed with non Western culture. Western culture

These casual sexual encounters among Malaysian youth have contributed to a social problem that
appears every day in newspaper and mass media. From the period of January until July 2010, public
were shocked, appalled, dismayed by the increasing reported cases of abandoned babies, some of
whom were found dead. This incident indirectly indicated that something is wrong in our society.
Statistics from the Malaysia Welfare Department from January to April 2010, reported that 111
unmarried young girls were pregnant. The figure, however, is just the tip of the iceberg as many cases
go unreported and pregnancies terminated. It also reported in New Straits Times on 23rd July 2010,
the body of a baby girl found in a bag at a bus stop near the Sultan Ismail Hospital, Johor Bahru in the
morning. Also there a baby found buried. New Straits Times on 18th July 2010, reported that a fetus
was found buried by the roadside in Jalan 12, Bandar Puteri Puchong, Selangor. As mention by the Dr
Ismail Thamby in the Bernama on 26 August 2010, normally young people will not think of the
consequences of their actions because they are easily driven by factors such as influence by
pornographic materials on the internet, as well as they lack of religious knowledge.

Graduation Speech On Joining Greek Life
Background Statement Never in a million years did I plan on joining Greek life in college. When I got
to school I quickly decided that I wanted to be more involved and help make a difference in people s
lives. I decided to rush a sorority which happened to be Delta Gamma. Delta Gamma has provided me
with so many wonderful opportunities to make a difference. When the Whited family reached out to
our chapter here at IUP I knew this would be something I would remember doing for years to come.
The Whited family came to one of our chapter meetings and we got to meet little Lochlan who
touched all of our hearts. I have had so many wonderful opportunities from this organization already

Having philanthropy events has always been one of my favorite things about Greek life. Whether it is
attending other sorority or fraternities events or being apart of our own. Delta Gamma holds two main
events for Service for Sight each year. In the fall we have Anchor Slam which is a three on three
basketball tournament where sororities and fraternities come out to compete against one another. In
the spring we held Anchor Splash which is a synchronized swimming event with many different relay
races. This year we had the Whited family come and speak on their behalf. They explained how
Lochlan was diagnosed with CRB1 and how he will eventually loose his eyesight completely. This
story touched a lot of students, faculty, and families that attended our philanthropy. We made Lochlan
our featured anchor man and tried to raise as much money as possible for the family. This event was
very successful and we raised over 1,800 dollars to give to the family. Each year Delta Gamma has a
founder s day. Founder s day was held this year at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana PA. We celebrated our
35 years on IUP s campus as Delta Gamma s. Many old alumnae came and celebrated with us at a
formal dinner. This year we invited the Whited family to come and talk about the struggles their
family has been experiencing with their son Lochlan. The alumnae wanted to raise money for this
family and passed around a basket and they donated over 500 dollars for the retinal

In March 2003 the Porsche brand faced a challenge without precedent in 55 years. Since the e launch
of the Porsche 356 in 1948, the brand had stood for expensive, high performance sports cars.
Its designs, varying little over the decades, formed and then came to reflect the notion of a classic n

I had the pleasure of interviewing Christian Schaffer, the Co anchor of Good Morning Maryland at
WMAR TV at ABC 2 News in Baltimore. Broadcast news is a medium that is thrilling, exciting, and
fast paced. Schaffer took time out of his action filled days as a Co Anchor to allow me to interview
him and get inside his world.
Schaffer s main responsibilities consist of delivering the news accurately and fairly, without any basis
on the topics reported. One of his biggest challenges he faces is delivering the news in a fair and
honest way. He also touched on how he strives to be entertaining and personable and deliver the news
in such a way that gets people to continue watching day after day. In news, there is a stress to maintain

The Colossians Essay By: Kenneth Bernard Ridgell Instructor: Dr. Matthew Clifton Essay on
Colossians Topic Heresy Date: November 7, 2011 Ridgell 2 The city of Colosse was located in the
province of Phrygia; before the Christian era the city of Colosse was a principle city the Lycus Valley.
Being part of a major trade route in Asia Minor from Ephesus to Miletus, the city was known for its
production of textiles, especially in its purple wool. Larger cities such as Laodicea and Hierapolis,
made it a well populated and high business area in the Lycus Valley. With great changes in the road

He is also the Redeemer (1: 14), the one who contains all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge
Colossians 2: 3. The purpose in writing Colossians was to express Paul s personal interest in the
Colossians to warn them against reverting to their old pagan vices, and to counteract both the
theological heresy and its practice within the church at Colosse. We live in a world where religious
confusion is ramped, just as it was in the days of the apostle Paul we are confronted with false
teaching without and within the church and as the early church rejected all forms of syncretism
because they were convinced that Jesus alone was God and the only way of salvation, this truth was
firmly stressed. Thus, as with the early church, so the church must not tolerate the syncretism of our
day. We can tolerate genuine pluralism, the idea that the religions of the world can peacefully co exist,
but not syncretism, the idea that the beliefs of various religions can be combined. Our society wants a
tolerance that accepts all beliefs. Tolerance can be defined in two ways, legal tolerance is the right for
everyone to believe in whatever faith (or none at all) he wishes. This is important in our society, and
we as Christians should maintain our conviction that no one should ever be coerced into believing as
we do. Another legal way of tolerance is social tolerance, a commitment to

Libertarianism Vs Classical Liberalism
Classical Liberalism is an ideology with its focus on individual liberty with a limited government. The
belief that an individual should have the freedom to pursue and be responsible for their own life. It
stems from an idea that humans, as a whole, are generally good in nature, and that people should have
rights apart from the government. These rights include the right to pursue happiness, the right to
financial success, or even failure, and the right to free speech and freedom of religion. Individuals
have equal opportunities in life, but not equal materialistic beginnings or gains. You had the right to
own land, but it was up to the individual to obtain it. Classical Libertarians thought the role of
government should be very limited, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The basic concept that the individual has the right to liberty is still there. However the role of
government has changed. The modern Liberal feels that the purpose of government not only to protect
individual rights, but to also provide social welfare, benefiting society as a whole, (Downes,
yaliberty.org). This would include things like financial assistance, universal health care, and free and
equal education. Also todays Libertarian party supports the government enforcing more rules and
regulations to big corporations. The political platform of todays Liberal can seem misleading to some.
One example of this is individual abortion rights. Modern Libertarianism supports the right of the
individual to be able to make their own decision to have an abortion, the government should not have
a say in the matter. This shows support for the classical belief that government should not play a big
part in an individuals life. However, by contrast, todays Liberal political platform also feels that the
government should not perform executions even for convicted serial killers, (Goodman ncpa.org).
This directly goes against the classical view that the governments role is to protect the individuals

Food Stamp History
A History of Food Stamps
The primary goal of food stamps is to increase food security and reduce national hunger in the United
States. Each year, out of the one trillion dollars that the United States Government has to spend on
assistance and welfare, food stamps takes up about 70 billion dollars (The History of NAP). The
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or previously known as the Food Stamp Program)
started through the Agriculture Adjustment Act (AAA) and since then has spread around its influence
and authority and grown in size (Mary Clare Jalonick Associated). Throughout the past 80 years, the
Food Stamp Program has been modified and reformatted, and today it aids more than 44 million
Americans (Rude, Emelyn). The Food Stamp ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Johnson instated the Food Stamp Act which made the Food Stamp Program permanent. Congress saw
this as an opportunity to strengthen the agricultural economy; to help achieve a fuller and more
effective use of food abundances; to provide for improved levels of nutrition among low income
households through a cooperative Federal State program of food assistance to be operated through
normal channels of trade (Puro, Steven). In order for this program to function Congress would
distribute out paper food stamps each month through a welfare office to those personnel or families
who made the poverty line or below. Right after the Food Stamp Act of 1964 was adopted by
Congress and the United States, many legislators have debated funding, eligibility standards,
accessibility, and accountability (Food Distribution). However, this program did lead to a boost in the
economy. Not only did low income families get the nutritional supplements that they needed, but it
also caused food stamps to be cash equivalent to actual money which let customers buy other grocery
items that were not part of the food program which expanded options (Rude,

Oil Sands
In this essay I will use the social issue of oil sands and its impact on climate change to critically
compare the social order and class struggle perspectives in social theory. To examine the social order
perspective, I will use the theories of Robert Merton and Harold Garfinkel. For the class perspective
theory, I will use the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Immanuel Wallenstein. The social order
perspective explains the social issue of climate change in terms of how the social structures of the
economy enforce and produce the ways in which people discuss climate change. Its main strength is
that it identifies how the economy is able to shape discussions and create a sense of order around the
opposing conflict of interest between the economy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Merton s theory derives from the fundamentalist perspective in which he defines manifest functions as
the easily recognizable and intended outcomes, whereas latent functions are unintended. Merton
argues the distinction between manifest and latent functions has significant value and that both
functions need to be recognized as an approach to explaining any social phenomena (Powell 2017:
Feb 15). Latent functions are not necessarily the anticipated outcome, however a closer examination
of this function can lead to a better understanding of a social relation or patterns observed (Longofer
Winchester, 2016). For instance, in applying the social issue of climate change to Merton s manifest
and latent theory, it is clear the manifest function of oil sands is for refineries to extract the oil to
produce fuel (energy source). As a result of increased reliance on oil sands as fuel, the process of
refining oil and clearing land to extract the oil from these oil sands, releases tons of pollution into the
atmosphere, creating the phenomena known as climate change. The perceived function of oil sands is
not to harmful to the environment, however; it becomes the negative consequence of the objective.
Although the manifest function does not recognize that the use of oil sands leads to an increased threat
of the environment, the latent function is able to identify the relationship. This latent function leads to
the reexamination of the use of oil sand and how our society collectively moves on about making
informed decisions regarding both the production and the rate at which we use

Gender Deviance In Aristophanes, Catullus, And Euripides
How Aristophanes, Catullus, and Euripides Viewed Male Gender Deviance and Their Parallels in
Modern Society
One modern issue related to gender and sexuality that has roots in ancient cultures is the transgression
of gender boundaries, specifically by male individuals. The idea of gender transgression by males is
broad; it can include failing to perform one or more aspects of masculinity or, as is more common in
modern settings, failing to identify oneself with masculinity at all, even identifying as a woman or
some other gender identity. Gender deviance was taboo in ancient Greece and Rome, with certain
actions, e.g., consenting to being penetrated, resulting in the loss of the man s citizenship and exile
from the community. Not surprisingly, this phenomenon continues to be met with strong negative
reactions by many individuals in modern society, including sardonic comments, the ... Show more

Interestingly, modern society is in many ways reflected through the writings of the Greeks and
Romans. Studying how the writings of Aristophanes, Catullus, and Euripides approach and describe
male gender deviance yields knowledge about Greek and Roman attitudes toward gender and the ways
in which these attitudes have shaped how modern Western society views male gender deviance.
Aristophanes, the most reactionary of the three ancient authors, critiques, in various ways, men who
transgress gender boundaries, ultimately advocating for strict gender boundaries and masculinity as a
way to defend against effeminacy and other forms of moral decay in Frogs. Catullus describes
masculinity and gender deviance in a way that directly challenges gender norms, but also defends
many harmful aspects of masculinity. Lastly, Euripides explores the performance of masculinity, the
insecurities associated with those actions, and the effect of

Muriel s Wedding And The Sapphires Analysis
Muriel s Wedding and The Sapphires Comparative Essay
Muriel s Wedding (1994) and The Sapphires (2012) are both Australian made films that highlight the
ideas of different and diversity amongst people in the 90s and 60s respectively. Each film conveys
themes of discrimination, music and the story of outcasts rising above the typically popular clique.
Muriel Heslop is portrayed as a social outcast the people she calls her friends are constantly telling her
she doesn t fit in and doesn t dress the right way. In this regard, the Sapphires can be compared to her.
When Julie, Cynthia and Gail perform in a talent show at a bar in town, the completely white audience
look away, roll their eyes or even walk straight out of the bar, purely because the girls are Aboriginal.
Afterwards, when a much less talented woman wins the competition, the compare tells the outraged
girls to pack your swags and go back to your humpy . This reveals the compare s view on Aborigines
and the fact she believes that they live in a state of lower socioeconomic standing. It is implied that
others in the audience reflect this view, also, despite being ignorant to the Aborigines lifestyle. A
similar attitude is displayed in Muriel s Wedding in the opening scene when Muriel catches the
wedding bouquet at one of the popular girl s weddings. She is told to give it to someone else because
she will never get married . Both these scenes convey the discrimination towards people with different
social standing and looks to what was considered acceptable back then.
In both films, family plays an important part in the outcome of the story. Julie, Cynthia and Gail s
parents encourage their singing and performing as much as they can. They believe that their daughters
and niece, Kay, could make a difference. The father giving the girls a chance to chase their aspiration
by allowing them to go into the perilous warzones in Vietnam is an example of just how far their
parents support goes. Muriel s family also has a huge effect on her eventual success but in a negative
matter. The constant disapproval from her father drives Muriel to make herself good enough to please
him and the rest of her family. Once Muriel loses respect for her father, she becomes

A Core Element Of The Film Western
A core element of the film western is the struggle between the civilizing forces of society and the
resistance of the wilderness. This has been used as a common thematic element in the narrative
structure of Westerns, and can be seen in the films portrayal of society s expansion to the west. In
these films, this expansion, which is a part of the movement to tame the Wild West, is a conflict that is
played out as a battle of oppositions on the American frontier. In director John Ford s My Darling
Clementine, this fundamental aspect of the genre comes across in the main character, Wyatt Earp s,
conflict with the Clanton family, whom the audience ultimately finds out are the ones who shot and
killed the youngest Earp brother. While Wyatt Earp s status as the town marshal symbolizes the
civility and order of society, the Clantons a violent, uncivilized family in which the father uses
primitive methods of discipline, such as whipping, against his own four sons represent the wilderness
of the untamed West. The symbolic importance of the characters in My Darling Clementine is also
connected to Ford s use of setting and locale. Given the manner in which Wyatt Earp enters the town
and sets about bringing justice to it, his character can be seen as the embodiment of the process of
civilization of the West. From a cinematographic standpoint, the shots of locations within the town
differ from those of the wilderness beyond the town site. The film makes use of its visual style to

In 1949, the Fitzegerald Commission into the Collery trouble articulated the idea of public
corporation. This concept was borrowed from the British labour party rationalisation of British coal in

were established in Nigeria: Nigeria Coal Corporation; Electricity Corporation; Nigeria Cement

corporations were managed by Boards. Since then more corporations have been established based on
national interest. Some state governments have also established public corporations to actualise their
developmental interests.
The term public service can be conceptualized in two ways. First it refers to the body of officials that
are involved in the administration of the agencies, services, programmes and policies of the public
sector. That is, the public servants that manage the entirety of public services. In the second sense, the
concept refers to the organizations, agencies, structures, departments and units which are charged with

Why We Should Not Participate In Competitive Sports
Lots of people argue about the safety of competitive sports. Not every sport has a risk of brain damage
as there are many sports that don t have to do with playing with our heads like cross country since it
has to do with running. Scientist say that long term brain damage is at a high rate from a head injury in
sports like track, football, soccer, and many more. Competitive sports can be learned without
competition at an older age. However not for young developing children. It s clear that overall having
your child not participate in competitive sports is a good idea.I choose this because (parents get to

Competitive Advantage says that a positive attitude can affect how you play and how well you do.
Encouragement can help defeat obstacles in the game and confidence is what makes you a better

Calculating And Measuring Racial Disparity
CALCULATING AND MEASURING RACIAL DISPARITY
Research focusing on the calculation of racial disparities in police outcomes has generally examined
police traffic stops and the follow up police activities, such as, citations, search and warnings. Review
of these studies suggests that calculation methods of racial disparity vary from one study to another;
however, majority of those studies employed population as a baseline measure or benchmarking
variable (Withrow, 2002; Smith Petrocelli, 2001; Withrow Williams, 2015). Early studies using
population as a baseline measure to compare disproportionate traffic stop counts found substantial
racial disparities (Lamberth, 1996; Verniero Zoubek, 1999). Studies later have begun to discuss that ...

Numbers suggest that, for instance, while Blacks compose six percent of population in St. Clayton
city, they represent 57% of overall police arrests. Similarly, the probability of Black arrest in Berkeley
(CA) and Madison (Wis) cities is nine times higher than other racial groups compared to their
corresponding population. In addition to this, Bureau of Justice statistics report that at the national
level, Blacks are two times more likely to be arrested compared to Whites. Concurring with media
reports and national statistics institutes estimates, empirical studies also report high proportion of
minority arrests compared to their representation in the population (Golub, Johnson, Dunlap, 2007).
On the other hand, others argue that disproportionality in arrest decisions is commensurate with the
racial distributions in offending rather than residential distribution in the population (D Alessio
Stolzenberg, 2003; Sampson Lauritsen, 1997). Putting it differently, proponents of this group hold that
differential involvement in crime commission leads to higher arrest rates. For this reason, employing
frequency of crime involvement as a baseline measure would yield different findings as opposed to
relying only population as a baseline measure (Golub et al., 2007).
Take an example, to calculate racial disparities in drug arrests, frequency of drug users for each race
group need to be

Stereotypes In The Film The Breakfast Club
Introduction John Hughes masterfully captures the shades of adolescent stereotypes and interactions,
the culture clash between adolescents and adults, and the role that parents play in modeling the high
school experience of each adolescent. The Breakfast Club follows five different teenagers throughout
the course of a day as they are forced to endure detention on a Saturday. Each character symbolizes a
classic adolescent prototype: the athlete, the basket case, the brain, the criminal, and the princess. At
first, the adolescents separate themselves and make judgments and assumptions about each other
based on the stereotype they each characterize. As the film develops, the characters start to move past
these stereotypes to recognize they have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He expresses an insecure attachment with his parents. This attachment happens when children have
parents that they most likely do not feel safe or protected around. It is frequently linked with families
of abuse. The difficulties that Bender faces can greatly affect his developmental styles. Bender
represents partial development in most areas. In terms of intellectual development, the illogical
behavior demonstrated at times to authority figures represent an incomplete growth. According to
Kohlberg s stages of moral development, Bender represents the second stage. He threatened to kill
Andrew during a dispute showing that he does not view human life as important. Stage two is self
interest driven. It expresses the what s in it for me position, in which right behavior is defined by
whatever the individual believes to be in their best interest but understood in a narrow way which does
not consider one s reputation or relationships to groups of people. Stage two reasoning shows a limited
interest in the needs of others, but only to a point where it might further the individual s own interests.
Freud created the Psychoanalytic theory, which consists of the psychosexual stages. If any stage is

preconscious. Bender thinks mostly from his id which explains why he gets into a lot of

Black Banner Symbolism
The story begins in 1979 when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to defend a puppet dictator
against rebels. Many men from the Middle East traveled to fight alongside the rebels as they see it as a
religious battle. Among these rebels were Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab Al Zarqawi. After the
Soviet withdrawal in 1989, the rebels went home, at this time Osama bin Laden forms Al Qaeda while
Abu Musab Al Zarqawi forms his own group. Bin Laden grew Al Qaeda to be a global force while
Zarqawi s organization dwindled. They later returned to Afghanistan which was under Taliban control
around 1996. On September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda attacked the United States from its base in

Many of the symbols Isis has adopted are those of Prophet Muhammed. One of the symbols Isis has
adopted is the monochrome flag. The flag is often called the Black Banner or Black Standard
(Porzucki). It is believed that one of the Prophet s war banners was monochrome. The Black Banner is
an ancient tradition in Eastern, Arabic and Islamic culture. In the Middle East, colors have important
meanings. To some believers, the colors do not only represent the jihad or the caliphate, but it
represents the final battle at the Day of Judgement (Prusher). Additionally, the calligraphy on the flag
represents great importance. The calligraphy evokes images of the Prophet as well as images of the
ancient caliphate (Porzucki). At the top of the flag, the calligraphy reads, There is no god but Allah.
Muhammed is the messenger of Allah. This text is known as the Shahada. Across Islam, the Shahada
is used as a declaration of faith. Another symbol they have adopted is represented by the white circle.
The text inside the circle also reads Muhammed is the messenger of Allah. Some people believe that
this is supposed to symbolize the Prophet s official seal. The use of Prophet Muhammed s symbols
creates a sense of endorsement of Isis s action. The symbols on the flag were strategically chosen to

The Obesity Epidemic in America Essays
Obesity among Americans has been a growing issue in the United States predominantly over the past
decade. Many may argue American s are obese because of poor food choices, over eating, genetic
disposition, lack of exercise, or the environment which one lives, while others blame it all on fast food
chains and restaurants. Throughout my research I have come to find a lot of facts and statistics about
fast food consumption causing obesity. Statistics show that without a doubt the United States is the
most obese country in the world. Since Americans typically live hectic lifestyles, fast food is a quick
and easy way to grab a meal on the go. However, eating fast food frequently provides the body with

Obesity is a serious health concern and should not be ignored. According to Sassi Obesity and the
chronic diseases associated with it are killers, with severely obese people dying eight to ten years
earlier than their peers . This means leaving ones family, friends and loved ones up to eight to 10 years
earlier than necessary. In the article Overweight and Obesity: Health Consequences, an estimated
300,000 deaths per year may be attributes to obesity . With this in mind, when ones life is busy and
hectic that 3 minute drive thru may be quick and convenient for the moment, but think of the long run
and the toll that may play on ones body.
Unfortunately, Americans are consuming more fast food now than ever before. In 1952 there was
exactly one McDonalds in all of America, an entire six pack of Coca Cola had fewer ounces of soda
than one can has today, and less than 10% of the Americans were obese. In the decades that followed,
obesity slowly began to rise; many did not think anything of if it until obesity hit a shocking 23% in
1994. Helen states, From then on obesity across the United States began to rise until 2005 when it hit a
record of 35% of adults and 15% of children were obese . Today, we call this massive spike in obesity

Ethan Remmel, a Bellingham, WA resident, was only 41 when he died on June 13, 2011, a year after
being diagnosed with terminal colon cancer that quickly spread to his bones. Ethan was a psychology
professor and father of two young sons. He took a lethal dose of crushed prescription sedatives to end
his life. He was able to legally obtain that prescription from his physician under the state s 2009 Death
with Dignity Act. The law allows people living with deadly illnesses maintain control over their lives.
Having that control maintained seems to improve the quality of life for someone at the end of their

the cancer was eating her brain which would have caused her to suffer in hospice care for months
while her family watched her deteriorate slowly. Even with palliative medication, she could develop
morphine resistant pain and lose her verbal, cognitive, and motor skills at any time. For her, that
seemed like a nightmare to put her family through. She wanted to live the rest of the life she had left

they are weighed against each other the arguments to legalize PAD by far outweigh the arguments
against legalizing PAD. PAD should be legalized.

it is the way the snake wraps itself around you and tightens its grip until it kills you. Tropical areas are

dangerous to strike.
8. Cottonmouth
Also referred to as the water moccasin, the bite is more harmful and deadly than that of the
copperhead, but does not lead to death. That much, anyway. It is more aggressive than the copperhead,
but only bites when it is touched. More aggressive reputation and strikes a ready to bite pose. The
snake can get up to six feet long.
7. Common krait
Often considered India s most dangerous snake. The venom contains highly powerful neurotoxins
which cause the muscles to become paralyzed. It has two kinds of neurotoxins (postsynaptic and
presynaptic) that usually affect the nerve endings located close to the synaptic cleft of the brain.
6. Inland Taipan
This snake has the most venom, more than any other snake in the world. If left untreated, the death
rate from a bite from this snake is eighty percent. That being said, this snake does not usually bite, is
actually easy going, and stays away from confrontation.

Low Voter Turnout In Elections
Voters play a large role in the election process, therefore their participation and knowledge can
determine a lot. Many voters are participating less as the elections go on, due to not being fully

Some ideas in the field include looking at the response speed of the recollection of memories, and the
emotion felt when recalling the memory (Reisberg). A common assumption is that the confidence with
which memory is recalled could indicate its accuracy. However, there is very little association with
how sure someone is about the occurrence of an event and how accurate their recollection is. We are
often sure of our false memories.
Smith, Ellsworth, and Kassin explain this in their study on Eyewitness Accuracy and Confidence.
They note that most officials in court cases overwhelmingly believe confidence in eyewitness
testimony to be positively correlated with accuracy. To disprove this, they studied about 100
undergraduate students from Stanford University. They had the students watch a car accident,
participate in a filler task, and then answer questions about the car accident. They were asked to rate
the confidence on their answers on a scale of 1 (no clue) to 10 (absolutely sure). The researchers then
computed the correlation of accuracy and confidence and found the same conclusion as Reisberg
explained: confidence can not be solid an indicator of accuracy (Smith 358).
In fact, the more we are asked to recall a memory, the more confident we become, which is
unfortunate because it s easy to create a false memory. Let us take an

The first appearance of jazz was at the turn of the century in New Orleans and is called Dixieland
Jazz, or Classic Jazz. It developed out of music for street parades in the black community. It also had
deeper roots in a style of music called Blues, which was used to express the ... Show more content on

This more stable style invited dance, and the swing era is also associated with a dance craze, carried
out in dance halls and clubs. Duke Ellington got his start in the swing era, as one of the earliest
musicians to create the big band effect (Verve).
World War II changed the jazz world again and influenced the development of Bebop. As the war took
away many of the musicians that made up the big band groups of the swing era, a new style emerged
that again used smaller groups and younger musicians. Some musicians who got their start in this way
include Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Red Rodney (Verve).
The Bebop era marked an important change the style of jazz music. Due to the smaller size of the
bands, there was more room for improvisation, and the music began to take on more complicated
dimensions than it had seen thus far. During the swing era, jazz had been associated with dancing, and
was played in dance halls and cabarets. In the Bebop era, it began to move away from this function
and began to develop more complicated tempos and melodies (Verve).
Jazz was still growing in the 1950 s and began to incorporate the innovations of the Bebop era with
the more melodic elements of the earlier eras. The result was a period called the Cool period. The jazz
of the Cool period favored a more even beat and softened the sounds of the instruments

San Jose State 1967-1968
San Jose State had its share of upsets during this time as well. A letter from the college president to
college administrators at the end of the 1967 1968 school year said this:
With headlines of the nation s press predicting the new academic year to be one of greater turmoil than
1967 1968, with the intelligence activities of college administrations indicating that the press is not
crying wolf, I think that all of us concerned with the educational enterprise must pause for a sobering
view of the academic year...
On opening day of classes in September 1967, the full drama of racial discrimination was brought to
the attention of San Jose State College and the community. Charges of discrimination, later translated

Voters made it clear to city and county governments that they wanted them to focus on quality of life,
not more development.
Saratoga is a good example. City government finally put a plan together to develop parks in 1969. El
Quito Park, which my dad dubbed Gopher Hole Stadium, was a field of dirt with a couple of baseball
backstops in it for two decades. It, Wildwood Park (uptown), and a couple of others were finally
developed in the early 1970s.
The Slow Growth Movement, I suppose had its roots in the Sempervirens Club, which was formed in
1900 by a group of influential people from San Francisco, San Jose, and Santa Cruz. These folks went
for a camping outing together at Big Basin and determined then and there to do something together to

Transformation of Humphrey Van Weyden in Jack London’s...
Transformation of Humphrey Van Weyden in Jack London s The Sea Wolf
Jack London s The Sea Wolf is in some ways a philosophical text and a product of its time. The strain
it puts on the reader between a social Darwinist and utilitarian perspective against that of a more
idealistic one is great. Many times the character of Wolf Larsen is a more consistent articulator of the
Darwinian position and seems to always be getting the upper hand argumentatively. However, it is due
to a phenomenological outlook on the events presented within The Sea Wolf that the alternative
becomes intelligible. After all, the endeavor to improve is one thing which identifies us as human. The
understanding of what constitutes this improvement varies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Thus, since both the protagonist and the antagonist of this story read in order to educate themselves,
they both demonstrate a desire toward self betterment.
Yet the two character s understanding of what this self betterment is supposed to be is poles apart.
Where Wolf s view is purely materialistic and Darwinian, Hump s position is, at least initially, entirely
idealistic and metaphysical. And in the outset, each can only see the possibility of their own position,
discounting the other s. Hump confesses in his thoughts, how could I explain my idealism to this man?
How could I put into speech a something felt, a something like the strains of music heard in sleep, a
something that convinced yet transcended utterance? (35). Yet Wolf remains unshaken from beginning
to end. I believe that life is a mess ...It is like yeast, a ferment, a thing that moves and may move for a
minute, an hour, a year, or a hundred years, but that in the end will cease to move. The big eat the little
that they may continue to move, the strong eat the weak that they may retain their strength. The lucky
eat the most and move the longest, that is all, (35). This contrast endures throughout the entire novel,
and even in the end Wolf utters his last word as BOSH! So, once again, Wolf and Hump hold two

Canadian Legal System Essay
The Canadian legal system was influenced dramatically by the Persons case, the Napoleonic code and
the Magna Carta. First, the Persons case significantly influenced the Law system as known today. The
Persons case, which took place in 1926 was regarding Emily Murphy, an Alberta police magistrate,
otherwise known as a judge. While judging a case, her ruling was challenged because according to the
British North America Act, women weren t considered persons. In order to change this, Emily Murphy
along with the Alberta Famous five started the legal process to prove that women were persons in
1928. The Famous five took the government to court, first at provincial level, then the Supreme Court,
however they were unsuccessful. In 1929, the women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The significance of the Persons case to the Canadian legal system was that women were officially now
considered legal persons. This case showed that laws have to be changed in order to show the views of
the majority of the population. Furthermore, it showed the importance of Canada s connection to
England. The feudal system allowed the right to appeal to the monarch (the famous five to the Privy
Council) and showed how versatile and crucial the feudal system was to shaping the law system in
Canada as the principle to appeal to a higher court is still in use today. Second, the Napoleonic code
influenced the Canadian legal system as it created civil law and created the base for the Canadian
charter of rights. During the time of Napoleon in the 19th century, he created a civil law to define and
establish civil rights and laws. This civil law of France began being applied to Quebec, Canada in
1774 by The Quebec Act. With this act in place, laws would be in accordance and referred with the
French law. When Napoleon created the code in 1803, it was then applied to Quebec and is still used
today. Furthermore, the Napoleonic code influenced the Canadian charter of rights. In the code, the
main traits found in this law is that it forbade privilege based on birth status, and allowed freedom of

Louisiana Black Bear Essay
The Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus) is a subspecies of the American black bear
(Ursus americanus). The Louisiana black bear was once found roaming all over Louisiana and parts of
Arkansas, Texas, and Mississippi. However, during the 18th and 19th century, bear hunting became
popular and large amounts of forest areas disappeared due to the demand for wood and agricultural
land. By the 1950 s, the Louisiana black bear s population was down to eighty to one hundred twenty.
In efforts, to save the species the Director of Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries temporarily closed
hunting season for the Louisiana black bear. Despite the noticeable decline of the bears population,

Prison Agency Analysis Paper
The Bureau has over 39,000 employees and multiple prisons throughout the United States. This
agency analysis will briefly describe the agency at the national level, but will primarily focus on the
agency I intern at by taking a look specifically at the role of psychology services.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a law enforcement agency serving under the United States
Department of Justice. In 1891, Congress passed the Three Prisons Act, which authorized the
establishment of the first three Federal Penitentiaries Atlanta, GA; Leavenworth, KS, and McNeil
Island WA (Bureau of Prisons, 2015). The first penitentiaries denoted their prisoners as religions
penitents who were serving time for their sins. In 1930, the assistant Attorney General hired Sanford
Bates to organize and establish what is known today as the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP, 2015).
Unlike its three penitentiary predecessors, the BOP began breaking away from punishment to creating
a culture of change and reformation. In 1934, Congress established the Federal Prison Industries to
provide training and paid work for the inmates (BOP, 2015). In the early fifties, they revised ... Show

security levels based on their classification level related to the inmate s individual needs. The Bureau

Essay On Age Related Macular Degeneration
The human eye is a remarkable feature that receives light, allowing a viewed object to be transmitted
as messages to the brain so that we understand what we see. It can detect something as small as a
candle flame from up to 15 miles away (under optimum conditions) as well as focus on fine details. A
pity, then, when this window to the soul is allowed to degenerate.
Not all eye diseases are caused by negligence but a large percentage is. Strain, an unbalanced diet, a
poor lifestyle, lack of awareness and bad habits can contribute to diminishing the wonders our eyes
offer.

caused by disease, injury and exposure to chemicals. Let s see what they ... Show more content on

It s usually resolved through surgery which can restore a large percentage of vision unlike with
glaucoma.
AMD: Age related macular degeneration is primarily caused by old age. Where glaucoma affects the
peripheral vision, AMD targets the central vision. As such, blindness is rarely caused although vision
impairment is naturally present and may progress without treatment.
Treatment typically involves laser surgery, implanting a telescopic lens and increasing vitamin intake.
AMD presents itself in one of two forms dry and wet. Dry AMD sees the macula (an area near the
retina) thinning to affect central vision. It s the more common form and progresses slowly. In wet
AMD, blood vessels behind the retina begin to grow under the macula to lead to leakage of blood and
fluid as well as scarring which further diminishes central vision.
Diabetic retinopathy: A common complication in diabetic patients, diabetic retinopathy occurs due to
damage to the retinal blood vessels. Proper diabetes management through control of blood sugar,
blood pressure and other necessary symptoms can see the condition brought to a halt and even
reversed to an extent.

Weight Watchers Research Paper
I knew about Weight Watchers way before Oprah started endorsing it! I remember learning about the
weight loss plan in my early twenties from one of my friends. I watched her jump from one diet to
another unsuccessfully, until she tried Weight Watchers. Weight Watchers is diet plan that was
invented in the early 60 s by an overweight housewife named Jean Nidetch. Like most Americans she
was tired of denying herself cabs, desserts and whatever else she wanted to eat for the cost of losing
weight.
Weight Watchers has become a household name, it has over 30 million members and is used in many
countries. I think one of the biggest reasons why Weight Watchers has been able to stick around is
because of their weekly meetings. During those weekly members talk about their weight loss goals,
share eating tips, exercise, and they also discuss behavioral changes that are necessary to attaining a
healthier lifestyle. Losing weight is not easy, but when you have the support of a group, it goes a long
way. Weight Watchers promises you can eat whatever your heart desires, in moderation, of course. It
follows a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For one, it is not safe for children. The program s strict point system would not fit a child s daily
calorie intake. Because a child s body is still growing, I think they need their recommended daily
intake of fruits, veggies, legumes, fats and cabs. The plan that weight watchers has limits them from
consuming the amount needed for a child s diet. I think they would either eat too much of certain food
group and not eat enough of another. I think it s a lose lose situation for a child. Aside from their
nutritional needs not being met with the Weight Watchers diet I think that introducing a child to such a
strict diet while they are still developing can hurt them psychologically. The diet plan s calorie
counting, introduces a unhealthy relationship with food, which can later lead to an eating

How And Treat Eye Allergies
How to diagnose and treat eye allergies?
Description: medical examination is one of the best and most approved methods that can protect your
eyes from allergic reactions as this is the right method of detecting the eye allergens.
It is very much necessary to make thorough diagnosis of eye allergies otherwise the original causes
cannot be discovered ever. You can now visit any reputed and experienced ophthalmologist so that
your eyes can be properly examined.
Why diagnosis of eye allergies is needed?
Nowadays, eye allergy examination is usually made by means of advanced procedures so that the
hidden troubles or issues can be easily and accurately detected without any confusion. Infectious
conjunctivitis spread faster and this is why the internal tissues or cells of your eyes can get badly
affected if the infectious elements are not detected on time.
Medical histories are also checked out in order to find out that whether your eyes have got any
existing troubles or not. If your eye condition is week from the very beginning, then in that case
conjunctivitis can be quite dreadful as disastrous results might occur. If you have weak retina or high
power, then infectious elements can make your eye condition more critical and this is the reason
medical histories need to be judged properly. Slit lamp microscope is generally used by the eye
specialists so that eye examinations can be conducted with great care and higher accuracy.
Internal eye condition can be perfected examined

The Legacy Of Rock Music
As a young child, I remember spending a bunch of time with my family, but the most memorable from
my childhood would be playing music and singing at the top of my lungs to The Beatles. The song I
remember the most would be called, Yesterday , and this was the song my sisters and I would choose
when we sang at any karaoke place. The amazing melodies, and simplistic words really caught my
interest. This band has really made a big impact of how music sounds, and the bands history will
forever be a big influence to most individuals. In the 1950 s, the history of rock music started out with
famous music artists like Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry, and these artists became
extremely popular because of their amazing stage presence and with the type of music these artists
were creating. As music evolved these artists had to change their sound of their music over time to
compete with the emerging types. These music artists became huge icons that changed the history of
listening to rock and roll music, and it was no longer just one way of sounding, but how can the artists
incorporate more depth by using emotional lyrics and learning how to play instruments to add texture.
The lyrics needed to be more meaningful, and the sound of the music needed to be enhanced with
more creativity. Unlike most musicians today, the sound came from earlier music artists that were
experimenting ways to tune their instruments, and lyrics to create individuality styles. Instead of

This building has a long history events starting in 1561.Before the Great Fire the St. Paul s Cathedral was called the old St. Paul s , one of the largest Christian cathedrals in Europe. This 19th century (middle ages) building was 178 meters long, and 149 meters high, till it was struck in 1561 by lightning. The Greek cross design was made after the London Great Fire. Wren started to be more smart and thoughtful between the 16th to 17th century of English cathedral design. • 3. Essay about The Zulu Clan The Zulu Clan In the 1820 s, during a period of social unrest and warfare, the Zulu clan, a Bantu people, rose to political prominence under the great King Shaka in present day South Africa. This period is called mfecane, or crushing because it was characterized by Shaka s tyrannous reign during which he conquered neighboring peoples and established a kingdom for the Zulu people on South Africa s eastern coast. The word zulu was used in 1824 to refer to a war like race of South African Blacks . (Ngubane, 1977) The British characterization of Shaka as a monster, however, is now seen as a propagandist attempt to disguise their own interests in procuring land and labor in the region. In fact, much of the violent disruption ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Considering the social trauma associated with colonialism and apartheid the Zulu responded by clinging more tenaciously to their heritage as a means of psychological survival in a society which systematically degraded and disrespected them as a people. Berglund (1976) points out that it is the rituals and symbols of a society which express the relationships between members of that society and makes living in that society a meaningful experience. The focus of this paper will be centered on traditional Zulu spiritual beliefs and, to whatever extent possible, not those adapted to Western thought. In providing first the basic cosmological beliefs and then moving on to the central theme of traditional spiritual beliefs involving deceased ancestors and their role in Zulu society, my goal will be to demonstrate how social harmony is maintained as a result of the observance of these spiritual beliefs and practices. According to traditional belief, uMveliqangi, the Lord of the Sky, emerged full blown from the reeds in the realm of the sky. Man later emerged from the reeds and was let down to earth through a hole in the floor of the sky. This explains the origin of the Zulu clan name, zulu meaning of the sky . The Lord of the Sky then sent a chameleon down to earth to tell the people that they will not die. Later on, he sent a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Western culture is a body of knowledge derived from reason that began in Ancient Greece. There and in the Roman civilization it developed until the start of the Middle Ages when it largely vanished from Europe. During the Middle Ages, Western culture resided, instead, in the Arab / Persian world to a modest degree. Today, Western culture has at least some presence in nearly all nations of the world. From the period of January until July 2010, public were shocked, appalled, dismayed by the increasing reported cases of abandoned babies, some of whom were found dead. This incident indirectly indicated that something is wrong in our society. Statistics from the Malaysia Welfare Department from January to April 2010, reported that 111 unmarried young girls were pregnant. The figure, however, is just the tip of the iceberg as many cases go unreported and pregnancies terminated. It also reported in New Straits Times on 23rd July 2010, the body of a baby girl found in a bag at a bus stop near the Sultan Ismail Hospital, Johor Bahru in the morning. Also there a baby found buried. New Straits Times on 18th July 2010, reported that a fetus was found buried by the roadside in Jalan 12, Bandar Puteri Puchong, Selangor. When I got to school I quickly decided that I wanted to be more involved and help make a difference in people s lives. I decided to rush a sorority which happened to be Delta Gamma. Delta Gamma has provided me with so many wonderful opportunities to make a difference. When the Whited family reached out to our chapter here at IUP I knew this would be something I would remember doing for years to come. Having philanthropy events has always been one of my favorite things about Greek life. Whether it is attending other sorority or fraternities events or being apart of our own. Delta Gamma holds two main events for Service for Sight each year. In the fall we have Anchor Slam which is a three on three basketball tournament where sororities and fraternities come out to compete against one another. In the spring we held Anchor Splash which is a synchronized swimming event with many different relay races. This year we had the Whited family come and speak on their behalf. They explained how Lochlan was diagnosed with CRB1 and how he will eventually loose his eyesight completely. This story touched a lot of students, faculty, and families that attended our philanthropy. We made Lochlan our featured anchor man and tried to raise as much money as possible for the family. This event was very successful and we raised over 1,800 dollars to give to the family. Each year Delta Gamma has a founder s day. Founder s day was held this year at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana PA. We celebrated our 35 years on IUP s campus as Delta Gamma s. Many old alumnae came and celebrated with us at a formal dinner. Being part of a major trade route in Asia Minor from Ephesus to Miletus, the city was known for its production of textiles, especially in its purple wool. Larger cities such as Laodicea and Hierapolis, made it a well populated and high business area in the Lycus Valley. The purpose in writing Colossians was to express Paul s personal interest in the Colossians to warn them against reverting to their old pagan vices, and to counteract both the theological heresy and its practice within the church at Colosse. We live in a world where religious confusion is ramped, just as it was in the days of the apostle Paul we are confronted with false teaching without and within the church and as the early church rejected all forms of syncretism because they were convinced that Jesus alone was God and the only way of salvation, this truth was firmly stressed. Thus, as with the early church, so the church must not tolerate the syncretism of our day. We can tolerate genuine pluralism, the idea that the religions of the world can peacefully co exist, but not syncretism, the idea that the beliefs of various religions can be combined. Our society wants a tolerance that accepts all beliefs. Tolerance can be defined in two ways, legal tolerance is the right for everyone to believe in whatever faith (or none at all) he wishes. This is important in our society, and we as Christians should maintain our conviction that no one should ever be coerced into believing as we do. Another legal way of tolerance is social tolerance, a commitment to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Libertarianism Vs Classical Liberalism Classical Liberalism is an ideology with its focus on individual liberty with a limited government. The belief that an individual should have the freedom to pursue and be responsible for their own life. It stems from an idea that humans, as a whole, are generally good in nature, and that people should have rights apart from the government. These rights include the right to pursue happiness, the right to financial success, or even failure, and the right to free speech and freedom of religion. Individuals have equal opportunities in life, but not equal materialistic beginnings or gains. You had the right to own land, but it was up to the individual to obtain it. Classical Libertarians thought the role of government should be very limited, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The basic concept that the individual has the right to liberty is still there. However the role of government has changed. The modern Liberal feels that the purpose of government not only to protect individual rights, but to also provide social welfare, benefiting society as a whole, (Downes, yaliberty.org). This would include things like financial assistance, universal health care, and free and equal education. Also todays Libertarian party supports the government enforcing more rules and regulations to big corporations. The political platform of todays Liberal can seem misleading to some. One example of this is individual abortion rights. Modern Libertarianism supports the right of the individual to be able to make their own decision to have an abortion, the government should not have a say in the matter. This shows support for the classical belief that government should not play a big part in an individuals life. However, by contrast, todays Liberal political platform also feels that the government should not perform executions even for convicted serial killers, (Goodman ncpa.org). This directly goes against the classical view that the governments role is to protect the individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Each year, out of the one trillion dollars that the United States Government has to spend on assistance and welfare, food stamps takes up about 70 billion dollars (The History of NAP). The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or previously known as the Food Stamp Program) started through the Agriculture Adjustment Act (AAA) and since then has spread around its influence and authority and grown in size (Mary Clare Jalonick Associated). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Johnson instated the Food Stamp Act which made the Food Stamp Program permanent. Congress saw this as an opportunity to strengthen the agricultural economy; to help achieve a fuller and more effective use of food abundances; to provide for improved levels of nutrition among low income households through a cooperative Federal State program of food assistance to be operated through normal channels of trade (Puro, Steven). In order for this program to function Congress would distribute out paper food stamps each month through a welfare office to those personnel or families who made the poverty line or below. Right after the Food Stamp Act of 1964 was adopted by Congress and the United States, many legislators have debated funding, eligibility standards, accessibility, and accountability (Food Distribution). However, this program did lead to a boost in the economy. Not only did low income families get the nutritional supplements that they needed, but it also caused food stamps to be cash equivalent to actual money which let customers buy other grocery items that were not part of the food program which expanded options (Rude, ... • 13. Oil Sands In this essay I will use the social issue of oil sands and its impact on climate change to critically compare the social order and class struggle perspectives in social theory. To examine the social order perspective, I will use the theories of Robert Merton and Harold Garfinkel. For the class perspective theory, I will use the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Immanuel Wallenstein. The social order perspective explains the social issue of climate change in terms of how the social structures of the economy enforce and produce the ways in which people discuss climate change. Its main strength is that it identifies how the economy is able to shape discussions and create a sense of order around the opposing conflict of interest between the economy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Merton s theory derives from the fundamentalist perspective in which he defines manifest functions as the easily recognizable and intended outcomes, whereas latent functions are unintended. Merton argues the distinction between manifest and latent functions has significant value and that both functions need to be recognized as an approach to explaining any social phenomena (Powell 2017: Feb 15). Latent functions are not necessarily the anticipated outcome, however a closer examination of this function can lead to a better understanding of a social relation or patterns observed (Longofer Winchester, 2016). For instance, in applying the social issue of climate change to Merton s manifest and latent theory, it is clear the manifest function of oil sands is for refineries to extract the oil to produce fuel (energy source). As a result of increased reliance on oil sands as fuel, the process of refining oil and clearing land to extract the oil from these oil sands, releases tons of pollution into the atmosphere, creating the phenomena known as climate change. The perceived function of oil sands is not to harmful to the environment, however; it becomes the negative consequence of the objective. Although the manifest function does not recognize that the use of oil sands leads to an increased threat of the environment, the latent function is able to identify the relationship. This latent function leads to the reexamination of the use of oil sand and how our society collectively moves on about making informed decisions regarding both the production and the rate at which we use ... • 14. Gender Deviance In Aristophanes, Catullus, And Euripides How Aristophanes, Catullus, and Euripides Viewed Male Gender Deviance and Their Parallels in Modern Society One modern issue related to gender and sexuality that has roots in ancient cultures is the transgression of gender boundaries, specifically by male individuals. The idea of gender transgression by males is broad; it can include failing to perform one or more aspects of masculinity or, as is more common in modern settings, failing to identify oneself with masculinity at all, even identifying as a woman or some other gender identity. Gender deviance was taboo in ancient Greece and Rome, with certain actions, e.g., consenting to being penetrated, resulting in the loss of the man s citizenship and exile from the community. Not surprisingly, this phenomenon continues to be met with strong negative reactions by many individuals in modern society, including sardonic comments, the ... Studying how the writings of Aristophanes, Catullus, and Euripides approach and describe male gender deviance yields knowledge about Greek and Roman attitudes toward gender and the ways in which these attitudes have shaped how modern Western society views male gender deviance. Aristophanes, the most reactionary of the three ancient authors, critiques, in various ways, men who transgress gender boundaries, ultimately advocating for strict gender boundaries and masculinity as a way to defend against effeminacy and other forms of moral decay in Frogs. Catullus describes masculinity and gender deviance in a way that directly challenges gender norms, but also defends many harmful aspects of masculinity. • 15. Muriel s Wedding And The Sapphires Analysis Muriel s Wedding and The Sapphires Comparative Essay Muriel s Wedding (1994) and The Sapphires (2012) are both Australian made films that highlight the ideas of different and diversity amongst people in the 90s and 60s respectively. Each film conveys themes of discrimination, music and the story of outcasts rising above the typically popular clique. Muriel Heslop is portrayed as a social outcast the people she calls her friends are constantly telling her she doesn t fit in and doesn t dress the right way. In this regard, the Sapphires can be compared to her. When Julie, Cynthia and Gail perform in a talent show at a bar in town, the completely white audience look away, roll their eyes or even walk straight out of the bar, purely because the girls are Aboriginal. Afterwards, when a much less talented woman wins the competition, the compare tells the outraged girls to pack your swags and go back to your humpy . This reveals the compare s view on Aborigines and the fact she believes that they live in a state of lower socioeconomic standing. It is implied that others in the audience reflect this view, also, despite being ignorant to the Aborigines lifestyle. A similar attitude is displayed in Muriel s Wedding in the opening scene when Muriel catches the wedding bouquet at one of the popular girl s weddings. She is told to give it to someone else because she will never get married . Both these scenes convey the discrimination towards people with different social standing and looks to what was considered acceptable back then. In both films, family plays an important part in the outcome of the story. Julie, Cynthia and Gail s parents encourage their singing and performing as much as they can. They believe that their daughters and niece, Kay, could make a difference. The father giving the girls a chance to chase their aspiration by allowing them to go into the perilous warzones in Vietnam is an example of just how far their parents support goes. Muriel s family also has a huge effect on her eventual success but in a negative matter. • 16. A Core Element Of The Film Western A core element of the film western is the struggle between the civilizing forces of society and the resistance of the wilderness. This has been used as a common thematic element in the narrative structure of Westerns, and can be seen in the films portrayal of society s expansion to the west. In these films, this expansion, which is a part of the movement to tame the Wild West, is a conflict that is played out as a battle of oppositions on the American frontier. In director John Ford s My Darling Clementine, this fundamental aspect of the genre comes across in the main character, Wyatt Earp s, conflict with the Clanton family, whom the audience ultimately finds out are the ones who shot and killed the youngest Earp brother. While Wyatt Earp s status as the town marshal symbolizes the civility and order of society, the Clantons a violent, uncivilized family in which the father uses primitive methods of discipline, such as whipping, against his own four sons represent the wilderness of the untamed West. The symbolic importance of the characters in My Darling Clementine is also connected to Ford s use of setting and locale. Given the manner in which Wyatt Earp enters the town and sets about bringing justice to it, his character can be seen as the embodiment of the process of civilization of the West. From a cinematographic standpoint, the shots of locations within the town differ from those of the wilderness beyond the town site. The film makes use of its visual style to ... Review of these studies suggests that calculation methods of racial disparity vary from one study to another; however, majority of those studies employed population as a baseline measure or benchmarking variable (Withrow, 2002; Smith Petrocelli, 2001; Withrow Williams, 2015). Similarly, the probability of Black arrest in Berkeley (CA) and Madison (Wis) cities is nine times higher than other racial groups compared to their corresponding population. In addition to this, Bureau of Justice statistics report that at the national level, Blacks are two times more likely to be arrested compared to Whites. Concurring with media reports and national statistics institutes estimates, empirical studies also report high proportion of minority arrests compared to their representation in the population (Golub, Johnson, Dunlap, 2007). On the other hand, others argue that disproportionality in arrest decisions is commensurate with the racial distributions in offending rather than residential distribution in the population (D Alessio Stolzenberg, 2003; Sampson Lauritsen, 1997). Putting it differently, proponents of this group hold that differential involvement in crime commission leads to higher arrest rates. A common assumption is that the confidence with which memory is recalled could indicate its accuracy. However, there is very little association with how sure someone is about the occurrence of an event and how accurate their recollection is. We are often sure of our false memories. Smith, Ellsworth, and Kassin explain this in their study on Eyewitness Accuracy and Confidence. They note that most officials in court cases overwhelmingly believe confidence in eyewitness testimony to be positively correlated with accuracy. To disprove this, they studied about 100 undergraduate students from Stanford University. They had the students watch a car accident, participate in a filler task, and then answer questions about the car accident. Almost every decade brought a new flavor to the movement, and by the 1940 s jazz had developed into a mature, complex form of music, with many nuances and avenues for continued change. It is important to trace the early movements in jazz to better understand the innovations of the Bebop and Cool jazz eras of the 40 s and 50 s. The first appearance of jazz was at the turn of the century in New Orleans and is called Dixieland Jazz, or Classic Jazz. It developed out of music for street parades in the black community. This more stable style invited dance, and the swing era is also associated with a dance craze, carried out in dance halls and clubs. Duke Ellington got his start in the swing era, as one of the earliest musicians to create the big band effect (Verve). World War II changed the jazz world again and influenced the development of Bebop. As the war took away many of the musicians that made up the big band groups of the swing era, a new style emerged that again used smaller groups and younger musicians. Some musicians who got their start in this way include Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Red Rodney (Verve). The Bebop era marked an important change the style of jazz music. Due to the smaller size of the bands, there was more room for improvisation, and the music began to take on more complicated dimensions than it had seen thus far. During the swing era, jazz had been associated with dancing, and was played in dance halls and cabarets. In the Bebop era, it began to move away from this function and began to develop more complicated tempos and melodies (Verve). Jazz was still growing in the 1950 s and began to incorporate the innovations of the Bebop era with the more melodic elements of the earlier eras. The result was a period called the Cool period. Transformation of Humphrey Van Weyden in Jack London s The Sea Wolf Jack London s The Sea Wolf is in some ways a philosophical text and a product of its time. The strain it puts on the reader between a social Darwinist and utilitarian perspective against that of a more idealistic one is great. Many times the character of Wolf Larsen is a more consistent articulator of the Darwinian position and seems to always be getting the upper hand argumentatively. And in the outset, each can only see the possibility of their own position, discounting the other s. Hump confesses in his thoughts, how could I explain my idealism to this man? How could I put into speech a something felt, a something like the strains of music heard in sleep, a something that convinced yet transcended utterance? (35).
