The Hunger Games District 12 Case Study
1.How does the setting of District 12 keep order?
The capitol keeps District 12 in order by having an electric fence around the whole district to keep
them from leaving. The capitol also places Peacemakers in the district to prevent anyone from
breaking any laws.
2.The tesserae has multiple functions. Consider the following: Is tesserae helpful for the districts?
Does the tesserae exploit citizens? Does the capitol want poor/malnourished tributes?
Yes, tesserae are helpful for the citizens in the districtbecause they help families provide food for
their households. The tesserae does exploit the citizens because the only way they can get them is
if they put their children s names from the ages 12 to 18 in the drawing for the Hunger Games

Two Approaches Of Pragmatics
According to Schmitt (2010), there are two approaches of pragmatics, a cognitive or psychological
approach which is exploring the relation between linguistic meaning of utterances, the
decontextualized, what speakers mean by their utterances on a particular situation and how hearer
interpret those utterances on those particular situations. Cognitive approach was developed by
philosophers Austin, Searle, and Grice. On the other hand, social pragmaticsapproach which focuses
on the communicative exchanges between individuals in social, cultural and other contextual
factors. Brown and Levinson (1978 1987) introduced face model of politeness to this approach.
The main objective of pragmatics is to study on how non native speakers comprehend and produce
speech acts in a target language. Speech act is not the whole of pragmatics, but is perhaps currently
the most important part of the subject. Many of the topics addressed in both narrow and broad
views derive from three major pragmatic theories: Speech Acts, Conversational Implicatures, ...

In other words, indirectness is a widely used conversational strategy, hence people reduce the
unpleasant message contained in requests and other statement. In indirect speech acts the speaker
communicates to the hearer more than he actually says by way of depending on their mutually
shared background information either both linguistic and nonlinguistic together with the powers
of rationality and inference on the part of the hearer. To be more specific, to explain the indirect
speech acts can be say it is a theory of speech acts certain general principles of cooperative
conversation (Searle, 1979, p. 31 32). As Thomas (1995) people use indirect strategies whenever
they want to reach aims from their hearers, when speakers want to increase the force of the message
communicated, or when want to make their speech more

Ethos And Pathos In Bernard Roth s The Achievement Habit
That s a goooooood reason (Roth 42). This is a quote from the second chapter of Bernard Roth s
book, The Achievement Habit. Mr. Roth, a professor at Stanford, effectively uses Aristotle s
Rhetorical Triangle containing ethos, pathos, and logos in chapter 2 of his book to show that
reasons are bullshit.
Mr. Roth effectively has ethos in his book. Bernard Roth the Author of the book, The
Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, And Take Command of Your Life, had
multiple different example of how he is a creditable source. Mr. Roth has been a professor and
Standford for 52 years. While being a professor, in 1996 he helped to design Designer in Society
also known as d.school. The hope for the program is to get students to think differently about
how they can reach their goals in life. The program is a pretty big deal, Wall Street Journal once
called it the hottest graduate program. Bernard Roth got his PhD in Mechanical engineering at
Columbia, so he knows his stuff. Lastly, the final thing that make him a creditable source is
Roth was awarded the Honorary PhD from the University of Paris. The University of Paris only
award these Honorary PhD s to people who makes a contribution to a specific field or to a society
in general. Bernard Roth has ethos because he has many degrees and achievements to back him up.
Second, Bernard Roth shows pathos, this mean emotion, when he says Love is the ultimate
unreasonable activity (Roth 50). This makes Roth sound heartless like he has no capacity for
emotion. Roth then goes into more details and explains that most times when we ask a person
why they love someone they go into a list of reasons, but if you look hard enough you could find
all those qualities in someone else. Some say loves is just a form of projection where you or I
might call it fate. When Roth says loves is unreasonable he is showing a lack of emotion which
in it own shape is emotion. Bernard Roth also says in chapter 2 of his book, Projection is a
common response (Roth 47). When we are guilty of doing something often times we will project it
on to someone else. Say one of my friends has a problem with telling the truth, they might think that
everyone is always lying to them. This is how

A Byronic Hero Of Our Time By Mikhail Lermontov
Pechorin A Byronic Hero
A Hero of Our Time, written by Mikhail Lermontov, consists of 5 stories that reflect the life, the
idea and the personality of the main character named Pechorin. Pechorin is not a typical hero in
romantic literature perspective; instead, he is a great representation of a pathetic Byronic hero that
more commonly appears in the time of Lermontov.
Different from a traditional hero and as a typical Byronic hero, Pechorin is reflected to be self
centered and manipulative in many parts of the story. His selfishness is shown through his
indifference to others and through the despicable methods of getting the things he wants.
Pechorin is sexually appealing, and could won the love of many beauties easily. However, he
never really cherished his charming and tried to manipulate the girls in the way he wants. When
he flirts with a girl, mostly it is because he is temporarily enjoying their beauty and the pleasure
he can get from them. When he really falls in love with them, he still only knows to receiving the
love from them and never really dedicates anything for his loves. When he fell in love with Bela,
he got her through a despicable trade of the horse of Kazbich with Bela s brother. This trade
made Bela lost her brother and father and deprived her happiness for a long time. However,
because of Pechorin s self serving and manipulative personality, he failed to consider the
consequence for his love and only enjoyed the feeling of controlling others when he

Plato s The Nicomachean Ethics
In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presents the reader with a guide to living a good life. He
claims the highest good is happiness, and the way to obtain it is through the use of reason. In order
to better comprehend Aristotle s ideas regarding happiness, we will explain his conception of
eudaimonia and excellence through rational activity. Then, we will examine this concept of rational
activity in relation to the aristotelian concept of self sufficiency. At the end of the Nicomachean
Ethics, Aristotle offers a seemingly divergent point of view. However, we will argue that these final
reflections on happinessdescribe the best way to experience a good life.
All individuals are in search of some good. Every one of our actions, skills and choices has an
aim, and this aim is defined as the good of that particular activity (1094a1 3). While these activities
are distinct, some may be classed into broader faculties. For example, ethics, metaphysics,
aesthetics, logic and epistemology are all activities that fall under the more general faculty of
philosophy. As a result, the individual ends of the former all work towards the superior good of the
latter. (1094a9 16). However, such ends are incomplete they are not pursued for their own sake, but
for the sake of another superior goal. As we examine the categorization of activity, is important to
distinguish between instrumental value and intrinsic value. An action or skill with instrumental
value is not pursued for its own

Heat Transmission Of Thermal Energy
Running Head: Report
Heat transmission Heat transmission is the process through which heat is transferred in swap of
thermal energy that exists between the physical systems, depending on the pressure and
temperature by dissipating heat. The essential modes of transferring the heat are convection,
conduction or diffusion and radiation. Heat is transferred from region of high temperature to low
temperature region.
The various modes of heat transfer are as follows:
Conduction

Building are designed and built with the purpose to provide shelter and comfort zone to the living
of human being. Buildings are also a major source to rescue from the external temperature, various
unstable weather conditions and environment. In accordance with the natural rule the human
beings release well defined amount of heat in order to feel comfortable. The reduction of heat will
maintain the normal body temperature of human being. If the heat is not released the person will
not maintain its normal body temperature and feel either cold or hot. Heat is released to maintain
the body temperature and to maintain that normality heat must be released into the external
environment. Heat will help to maintain the temperature if required amount of heat is not
released it would create a warmer temperature and resultant a suffocation and if too much heat is
released temperature could become cooler. Heat can be released through various building
elements such as doors, floors, windows or building sealing. Heat transferred due to the certain
loads, these loads are also known as the fabric heat gain or loss. Generally heat is transferred from
high temperature region to low temperature region. Heat transmission through building, wall, and
floor or of any construction can be expressed in the form of an equation. The equation is as

Recycling At The United Kingdom
Recycling is a process that continues to develop and become more popular within waste
management. As there is a wide amount of literature relating to this topic the following review will
focus in on aspects such as recycling behaviours and recycling in the curriculum.
Recycling in the United Kingdom
Recycling is the method by which waste is collected and processed into raw materials, which in
turn are processed into new products (Prestin and Pearce, 2010). This helps the UK comply with
the EC Landfill Directive targets that state to reduce the quantity of municipal waste going to
landfill sites (Kurz et al, 2007). The primary goal of recycling schemes is to increase the amount
of material that is collected and recycled, meaning that less waste is going to disposal (Lane and
Wagner, 2013). Woodard et al (2004) stated that the percentage of households in the United
Kingdom involved in recycling needed to continue to increase to reach the national target of
recycling household waste, therefore local authorities got involved in incentives, which is
discussed later in the review. (Woodard et al, 2004). A main concern in modern society is the
current state of the environment; it is a topic that is frequently examined in research. It has been
found that people want to act in a way to enhance sustainability in the environment and recycling is
a fairly simple behaviour which has a major impact on this. Recycling is also economically feasible
whilst having great impacts on the

After rejecting a merger proposal from Chevron in June 1999, Texaco agreed to a takeover
announced 10/16/00. In October 1998, DuPont did an equity carve out of 30% of Conoco; the
remaining 70% was spun off to shareholders in August 1999. On 5/29/01, Conoco purchased Gulf
Canada Resources. Phillips Petroleum acquired Tosco, the largest U.S. independent refiner, on 2/4

become the world s sixth largest oil and gas company based on reserves. The motives and
consequences of these mergers were similar. In this paper, the Exxon Mobil transaction is
analyzed as representative of these major oil merger transactions. As a clinical study, this paper
seeks to provide a format for analyzing mergers under eight major topics: (I) industry
characteristics, (II) merger motivations, (III) deal terms and event returns, (IV) valuation analysis,

The oil industry, like other industries, has been forced to adjust to the massive change forces of
technology, globalization, industry transformations, and entrepreneurial innovations. The oil
industry has some special characteristics as well. Oil is a global market with 53% of volume

Montessori Philosophy
Question: Explain the relationship between discipline and obedience from the Montessori
perspective. Explain how discipline and obedience are linked to the development of the will.
Maria Montessori (1988) believed that the discipline of a child is something to come, not something
that is already present. It means discipline must be stimulated, observed and let it grow by itself.
How to start stimulating or awakening discipline inside a child? Montessori says, В… an
individual is disciplined when he is the master of himself and when he can, as a consequence,

Obedience could be attained only when a child has fully developed and controlled his/her will,
and he/she freely chooses to follow other s instruction or orders. This could happen because the
child recognizes that the person who gives the order loves him/her and is more knowledgeable
than him/her, also this child is sure that the order given will be useful to perfect his/her skill.
Having explained the discipline and obedience, now we could conclude that these two features
will only be developed in a child if he/she is already able to control the inner power from within.
This is whether to do something based on his/her likes, or to do something just because the child
has already understood that he/she has to follow orders from others, because there are common

efficient vehicle. This demand has forced manufacturers to begin producing hybrid vehicle; first
four door hybrid sedan was unveiled by Toyota in 2000. The Toyota Prius success encouraged it
competitors to roll out their hybrid cars as well setting a common standard for environmentally
friendly and efficient vehicles. The relationship of consumer and manufacturer in the car industry
on a macro level has always been one in relative equilibrium. As demand increases the car
manufacturers have increased supply. The green movement in the United States pushed for hybrid
vehicles and car manufacturers responded by producing more vehicles, making the... Show more

This can be seen by the younger age group that has recently begun purchasing hybrid vehicles.
Sales in 2005 of hybrid vehicles only 12.34% were purchased by individuals ages 30 39 and only
9.61% were purchased by individuals ages 20 29; in 2011 12.68% were ages 30 39 and 17.84%
were ages 20 29. (Priuschat.com) The increasing attention the younger population places on
environmentally friendly and less gas consuming vehicles the more likely corporations are
going to spend time and energy devoted towards its research and development. Hybrid cars in
themselves have become more and more fuel efficient from a Prius bought in 2005 which
provided an EPA estimated 37.2 miles per gallon is in 2011 providing 42.7 miles per gallon.
With media attention car manufacturers are increasing what the vehicle can do and making them
more and more efficient. A major factor for individuals who are seeking to purchase a new
vehicle is the cost of gasoline which has risen almost 32% since January 2011. The chart below
indicates the trend of increasing gas prices. As prices increase demand inherently falls creating
room for alternative products to step in. 16% of Prius buyers stated that the primary reason for
buying the Prius was to save money on gas. (inflationdata.com). The fact that a meaningful number
of people can reasonably expect for their hybrid purchase to save them money is perhaps the most
important indicator for future hybrid

A contra indication is condition or reaction that would prohibit treatment. In my report I will

In most cases only one eye is usually affected, although there can be infection in both.
All of these contra indications will prohibit treatment, and client should seek medical/treatment
advice at their earliest convenience, and offer to reschedule. You must not give any medical advice
as this is not professional and may cause your client distress and alarm, but explain to your client
the concerns you have and why you would not look to apply any treatment to eyelash or eyebrows.
A doctors note would be required should client wish to continue Such reasons include spread of
infection, contamination, causing any further issues by going ahead with treatment(s).
Inflammation is an area raised up from skin surface and normally can be found to have skin
irritation on the area affected. You should not provide eyelash or eyebrow treatments if the eye
itself or surrounding area has any inflammation, but again, explain your concerns in a manner that
does not alarm them, ask they seek medical advice before proceeding (providing a doctors note
should the possible contra indication be no cause for concern and client would like to continue
treatment), concluding with information on contamination, risk of spreading infection and or
disturbing the affected area, causing harm to your client and potentially

My Budget Variance
The baseline I have set out for my budget worked very well for me in the past month, but this
month there was a large kink in it. There were just a couple different kinds of variances I met
when adding up the totals of my real spending this month. When I was analyzing my budget, I
went through and determined if the budget variances I had were good or bad for my needs. Most
of my budget variances were positive except for one major one. What I mean by this is a good
budget variancesignified to me an outcome that was better than I expected. This one large bad
budget variance I had consisted within my doctor s expenses budget. The reason I had such a large
variance of almost one thousand one hundred dollars within my doctor s expenses is because I had
to have surgery on my shoulder, and that was the amount of the co pay. Within my budget I set an
amount for my gas, clothing, and dining out, but it varies from month to month. For... Show more

The one way my budget allowed me to pay for the unexpected outcome was because of the
variances, savings, and emergency fund I had. Although I went under the set amount in my
budget in several different categories it was not enough to cover my unexpected expense of
surgery. This resulted in having to use those separate accounts of savings and emergency funds to
compensate for the unexpected expenses rather than going into debt further. Along with this I
was unable to save ten percent of my budget this month because as I expressed above all off my
existing savings and emergency fund went towards the procedure I had to have done. This was
extremely disappointing because for as long as I can remember I have been religious about
depositing at least ten percent into my savings no matter what, but as I was analyzing my situation
this was the only way to make it happen other than going into debt with a

Function and Structure of Hemoglobin and Myoglobin Essay
Myoglobin consist of single polypeptide chain that made up of 153 amino acid and ahs a size of
18 kDa. Its three dimensional structure was first determined by X ray crystallography by John
Kendrew in 1957. Myoglobin is a typical globular protein in that it is a highly folded compact
structure with most of the hydrophobic amino acidresidues buried in the interior and many of the
polar residues on the surface. X ray crystallography revealed that the single polypeptide chain of
myoglobin consist of entirely of eight (labelled A H) alpha helical. Within a hydrophobic crevice
formed by the folding polypeptide chain is the heme prosthetic group. This nonopolypepetide unit is
noncovalently bound to myoglobin and is essential for the biological... Show more content on

One of these is to a histidine residue which lies eight residues along helix F of hemoglobin, the
proximal hitidine (His F8). The sixth bond is to one of the oxygen atoms in a molecule of oxygen.
Near to where the oxygen binds to the heme group is another histidine residue, the distal histidine
(His E7). This serves two very important functions. First, preventing neightboring hemoglobin
molecules coming into contact with one another and oxidizing to the Fe3+ state, cause no longer
bind to oxygen. Sencond, lowering the affinity of the heme for CO by preventing carbon monoxide
binding with the most favourable configuration to the Fe2+. This is important because the protein
can no longer bind oxygen once CO has bound irreversibly to the heme,. Thus, although the oxygen
binding site in hemoglobin and myglobin is only a small part of the whole protein, the polypeptide
chain modulates the function of the heme prosthetic group.
Hemoglobin can bind four molecules of oxygen due to its four heme groups, whereas myoglobin
can only bind to one oxygen. The kinetics of oxygen binding of hemoglobin and myoglobin are
quite different. Myoglogin exhibit a hyperbolic oxygen binding curve and hemoglobin exhibit a
sigmoidial oxygen binding curve. The sigmodial curve suggest the the cooperative exist in the
hemolglobing oxygen bind mechanism. The initial binding of an oxygen molecule to a hemoglobin

Parallelism In Grapes Of Wrath

AP Literature/period

Renewal in The Grapes of Wrath
John Steinbeck usually uses California and the Salinas valley as his setting and is usually
placed in the 30s when the great depression occurred. The Grapes of Wrath is about a family
living in Oklahoma and they are farmers during the period called the dustbowl in which culture
was rough because there were droughts and conditions were not suitable for farming. This family,
because they are not doing too well, decide to move to California to find jobs and dignity. The
author writes about the struggle of a family during and Great Depression and also the struggle of
each individual as their lives are being torn apart. He not only shows how they go through these
hardships, but also how they will overcome them. In John Steinbeck s novel, The Grapes of Wrath,
he argues that all who follow the ways of the Bible will become renewed at the end. He uses
religion and parallelism in order to bring to light, the chance of hope that is evident within dire
circumstances, and project changes within people during turmoil.
The Grapes of Wrath incorporates parallels between both the Old Testament and the New
Testament. Steinbeck uses biblical symbols from the book Exodus to tell the story of the Joad
family s journey to California. The Dust Bowl, which is the reason they are leaving Oklahoma, is a
representation of the plague. Another symbol used in this novel is Noah s Ark. This represents the
truck they used

More money is then borrowed as people take advantage of this, which has the effect of boosting
the mortgage market as well. According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), 132,500
house purchase mortgage transactions have benefited from the holiday; this is the equivalent of
25% of the overall 486,400 house purchase loans in the period. Buyers have saved 173 million
from the holiday rather than the 600 million the government forecasted. The success is
questionable as the incentive was supposedly directed at lower income areas to the North, the
Midlands, Wales and Scotland where as, the majority of the benefits have gone to the richer areas in
the SE. As this area in particular was hit by the recession the least and where the housing market is
the strongest, the governmental loss of the taxation seems to have been wasted. The holiday ended
on the 31st December 2009. Although there has been a brief stimulation in the current housing
market the number of transactions is still at an all time low. The figures may fall further now that
stamp duty has been reinstated, meaning that the government may have to explore other options.

The Popular View Of World War II
The popular view of World War II is of the United States and Great Britain cooperating to defeat
the Axis powers. While it is known that there was a limit in cooperation between the Western
powers and the Soviet Union in terms of military strategy and political goals after the war, the limits
to the cooperation between Britain and the United Statesare less well known. There are several
reasons why the cooperation between the two countries was not as much as it could have been.
Major differences of opinion on which strategy would win the war with the lowest possible
casualties and what the post war world should look like caused tension and prevented full

This would continue until the passage of Lend Lease in March of 1941. Strangely enough, when
the Daily Mirror announced that Lend Lease would pass congress, the paper focused more on
Churchill s speech which was credited with the good news. The article stated that moved by
Churchill s plea, give us the tools and we will finish the job, administration leaders in
Washington last night predicted that the British Aid Bill will be made into law on March 1.
However, the fact that Britain had to pay cash for all war material for the first year and a half of
the war reveals that they were receiving much less help from America than popular history would
have us believe.
The limits of cooperation are revealed in the difficulty of the ships for bases deal in 1940. When
Churchill first took office his first concern was for the naval aspect of the war. He was concerned
that if France surrendered and Italy then declared war that Britain would not have enough
destroyers to attend to their needs. This is shown by the fact that the first thing that he asked of
Roosevelt after becoming prime minister was the loan of forty or fifty of [Roosevelt s] older
destroyers to bridge the gap between what we have now and the large new construction we put in
hand at the beginning of the war. Unfortunately it was not that simple.

The Importance Of Intercultural Communication
People communicate every day through different means, including speech and writing, and the use
of languages such as English for both local and global interaction is becoming popular among those
of different cultural backgrounds. The high demand in the use of English in the fields of
international politics, science and technology has led to the global spread of the language. Due to
this, English is currently seen as an international language, and its ownership is considered to be
denationalised and renationalised. The understanding of this ownership status is crucial in
establishing a successful and effective practice or study of intercultural communication, by
acknowledging the variations of English, as well as cultural differences in communication styles
within classroom and business contexts.
First, since English has become an international language, its ownership is denationalised and
renationalised. The concept of denationalisation proposed by Smith suggests that English is no
longer just owned by countries such as the United Kingdom or the United States, but by various
other countries around the world that also use the language. Moreover, other critics such as
Kachru and Widdowson further proposed that a global English should be disassociated from its
colonial past , meaning that English should not only be restricted to the official use colonial
countries of the U.K. and the U.S., and there is no need to internalise the [native speakers] of

The Witchcraft Hysteria Of 1692
The witchcraft hysteria of 1692 happened within the Puritan colony known as Salem
Massachusetts. It s important to know that the belief in witchcraft was carried over from their home
country, England. In England, an act of witchcraft was considered treason against the Church of
England, not to mention the king, who was the head of the church, so if one was to turn their back
on the church also meant going against the king. Many acts against witchcraftwere passed, the one
dated closest to the Salem witch trials was the Witchcraft Act of 1604 that moved trials of the
supposed witches from churches to actual courts. The fact that they were once held in churches
rather than courts seems like a biased situation to me. The puritans were afraid of witchcraft so
having the church conduct the trials of said witches could only mean that death was certain. The
puritanfaith to my understanding was a tough faith to follow, especially for women.
Gender roles were heavily put upon Puritan women, women were seen as inferior beings that
needed to be dominated by a male figure, and those who broke the mold were viewed as
dangerous. When speaking of puritan women and church, women were not allowed to pray with
the congregation or lead a prayer. The fact that women were viewed as dangerous should they not
conform to their gender roles should really show just how ridiculous their belief system was. One
can only imagine that the paranoia of women being witches derived from the belief

As the owner of the vehicle, you will most likely know your car or truck fairly well and can tell

Online Marketing Strategies For Restaurants
Online Marketing Strategies for Restaurants
Restaurant customers search for restaurants on their phones, receive marketing messages digitally,
use the Internet for customer service and research restaurants by reading online restaurant reviews.
People place carryout and delivery orders online, buy eCommerce products from restaurant websites
and look for restaurant menus online. If you re not engaged in online marketing, your restaurant
won t be visible to most customers, even if they re walking by your business but with their eyes
glued to their phone screens.
Eight Online Marketing Ideas
The following techniques will give you a strong working platform to launch all types of online
marketing campaigns, engage customers and prospects more effectively and build a strong Internet
presence.
1. Build a Mobile Website
Your most important step for online marketing is building a website that adjusts for any device
automatically. Responsive websites make it easier for people to find information on their phones.
Your website should be easy to navigate for customers and easily updated by you, an administrator
from your staff or a third party hosting, designing or consulting company.
2. Post Your Menu Online
Your menu is your second most valuable Internet marketing resource. Restaurants spent thousands
of dollars to post their menus in yellow page directories in past decades (and many still do), but
you can now post your menu often for free or at little cost where people can

Truth and Troop Hardships in a Chapter of The Things They...
Throughout Tim O Brien s short work How to tell a true war story O Brien has two reoccurring
themes. One is of the desensitization of the troops during their hardship regarding the events of the
Vietnam War, and the other is of the concept of truth. Truth may seem simple enough to explain, but
is in fact endowed with many layers. The story is chalked full of contradictions, as well as lies, and
embellishments, and yet O Brien claims that these are the truth. The truth, whether it be war or
society s, is in fact a concept that can be conveyed many times and in many ways. Whereas each is
independently untrue, the combined collaboration of these half truths is in essence the only real
truth.

Since the morale and the emotional tolerance of the troops has been pushed to cope with
unbearable times, they may have to insert more facts that are completely false, so that not only
does the listener feel, but the story teller feels as well. All you can do is tell it one more time,
patiently, adding and subtracting, making up a few things to get at the real truth, (684) or feeling.
So in essence, this embellished half truth of a story is as true as the facts from a history book
bringing us one step closer to the ultimate truth.
The personal witnessing of events is a critical point of view in telling a true story. It may not be the
entire truth, but it is the truth, as it seemed to the individual. The ideas get mixed up; you tend to
miss a lot. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal feeling of
what seemed to happen, which makes the story seem untrue. But in fact represents the truth exactly
how it seemed. (677) Such as is the case of Curt Lemon s death. Rat Kiley was having a good time,

Summary Of The Sorrows Of Young Werther
The human race is but a monotonous affair. Most of them labour the greater part of their time
for mere subsistence; and the scanty portion of freedom which remains to them so troubles them
that they use every exertion to get rid of it. Oh, the destiny of man! Werther s offhanded
comment in The Sorrows of Young Werther provides insight on how people perceive work and
freedom during his time, and how that relates to the way modern society perceives it as well.
People like to assume society has progressed in many ways in the last 200 years, but in some
ways, habits have not changed much. The working and recreational habits of the middle class
man as revealed through Sorrows are not far removed from the way college students and
working adults treat the same time. Werther makes a point of saying that the people he meets in
Walheim are like the type one would meet everywhere. Much of their time is spent working for

Werther, are exempt from this sort of life style because of their status. He, like Lotte and Albert,

difficult for most people not already around that social range to suddenly rise up into it. Due to
changing ideas concerning social hierarchies and the increased freedom in colonies slowly wore

Cicero s In Catilinam First Speech Translation
Chapter I. 1. I ask you, Catiline, how far will you abuse our patience? For how much longer still
will that madness of yours mock us? To what limit will that unrestrained audacity of yours
display itself? Hasn t the nightly garrison on the Palatine moved you at all, nor the patrols of the
city, nor the fear of the people, nor the gatherings of all good men, nor this most fortified place
for holding the senate, nor the faces and expressions of these men? Do you not realize that your

were not able to make a move against the republic, when you were saying on the departure of the

What? When you were confident that you would seize Praeneste on the very first of November
with a night attack, did you realize that that settlement on my order had been fortified with my
garrisons, guards and patrols? You do nothing, you contrive nothing, you think nothing. Which I

Iago Psychopath Essay
In the tragedy, Othello, written by William Shakespeare in 1603, the readers are never given a
direct answer on why Iago acts the way he does, and why manipulates and tortures everyone in his
life. Thus not being given a direct answer on why he does this without any remorse, readers are to
draw conclusions on their own, to tie the loose ends on his ways. Iagoshows many characteristics
of being mentally ill, with a psychopathic disorder. Shakespeare has left the readers to figure this
out, and to use the text to presume if he is a wether he is a psychopath or not.
The definition of psychopath is: A mental disorder in which an individual manifests amoral and
antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme
egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc.. (dictionary.com) Only one character fits the
characteristics in the play, Othello, and that is Iago. Iago is manipulative, conniving, too faced, and
a liar. Everything Iago has ever said or done in the play was manipulative against others, for his
own personal gain. No one ever suspected Iago was not who he truly was, he puts ... Show more

Pros and Cons of Government Intervention Essay
Objective
This specific report addresses the pros and cons of how much government intervention in the
marketplace is necessary and appropriate. This report will cover four authors, Cunningham, Green,
Friedman and Pertschuk. The authors have written extensively on consumerism and the protection
thereof. This author s goal is to break down some of the theories, which authors seem akin in their
beliefs and which authors views are bipolar opposites. Green states there be only should be two
types of government regulations 1) economic regulations and 2) health and safety regulations. He
states the only important pieces of consumer legislation to emerge from Congress in the past three
years were the Consumer Protection Safety ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Friedman views the consumer as strong and is totally interested in efficiency. He does note
however the FDA had done a good job of keeping us from harmful medication. The Cunningham s
objective of their research was to determine how many individuals in various sectors of society
know about the consumer protection laws and their rights as consumers. These were included, but
not limited to false advertising, false retail advertising, credit regulations, credit cards, labeling,
truth in lending and deceptive retail practices. These authors view the consumer relatively weak
due to a lack of knowledge. They also feel the low incomes are no match for the sophisticated
marketer. There these authors are interested in equity. The most important implication derives from
the lack of information demonstrated by all income segments of the consumer sample. This
situation suggests that what is needed is not more and tougher laws, but rather more information
made available to ore individuals concerning their rights as consumers. The present research has
demonstrated that one other variable is important: with the exception of a few areas of the law,
both consumers and attorneys know very little about their rights as consumers. This was
particularly true in areas such as door door selling, false or deceptive advertising, false or deceptive
retail practices. More and better information concerning consumers rights must be provided to
individuals of all

The Advocacy Of Women s Rights On The Grounds Of...
Feminism. The advocacy of women s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic
equality to men. Why are some people so angry or offended when they hear this word? Why
does the idea of women being equal to men annoy and infuriate them? Do they not believe that
women should have the same rights as men? Should women have to cover up to avoid being cat
called by disgusting men? Should women have to cover up to avoid being molested or raped?
Should women have to stay quiet when they are raped or abused because no one would ever
believe them? Should womanbe told what to wear, say, or do with their body? I ask myself these
questions every day. The question that I ask myself the most is, Why are women of color, gay, and
transgender women constantly being disrespected?
Woman as a whole get disrespected on a daily basis. We get cat called, get told what to do with
our bodies, victim blamed, our bodies are over sexualized, and were viewed as weak and just a
piece of meat. Being a woman is already scary enough but being a gay, transgender, or woman of
color is the most terrifying experience. Its seems as if the more melanin your skin contains, the
more disrespect you receive. Why is that? Although being a woman is hard, being a white woman
gives you so much more privilege than what a woman of color gets. First of all, white woman are
seen as beautiful and attractive because of their skin. They aren t constantly told that their skin is

America s Moral Codes Of The United States
Ever since the early 17th century, the Jews in Philadelphia have been striving to become an
important part of the American society, while staying true to their roots. Although the Jews faced
exile from their homelands of Portugal and Spain, they were able to build and sustain a strong
Jewish community within Philadelphia and pave the way for future generations through extensive
actions throughout the community. They built hundreds of Jewish schools, Community Centres,
synagogues and established many congregations. They became strongly involved in the American
society and paved the way for many of America s moral codes (Telushkin). There are currently 275,
850 Jewsin Philadelphia, making it one of the strongest Jewish communities in the United States
(Levine). By the 15th century, there were many Jews living in Spain and Portugal. They were
well employed and were positively involved with the Spanish government. However, their
prosperity soon came to an end on July 30th, 1492, as the King of Spain ordered the Jews to
leave the land, and the entire Jewish community, some 200,000 people, were expelled from Spain
(Telushkin). The Jews split up almost equally, some travelling to Italy and the others travelled
Mexico and Brazil by boat (Morais 7). After spending hundreds of years in South America, Jewish
explorers found an opportunity to leave these countries and travel to the United States for trade. In
1650, many Jews arrived in New Amsterdam, currently known as New

Teen Suicide Essays
Each year, thousands of children are dying, not from cancer, getting shot, or car accidents, but by
their own hands. They make the choice to take their lives; they commit suicide. To begin, what is
Suicide ? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, suicide is the act or instance of taking one
s own life voluntarily and intentionally. The number of teenagers who take their lives is rapidly
increasing each year. Teen suicideis escalating out of control and no one seems to realize just how
severe the issue has become. Every day and average of 18 young Americans end their lives, one
every 90 minutes. The National Institute of Mental Health believes that as many as 50 150 suicides
are attempted for each one that is completed , meaning... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sexual and physical abuse are also contributing causes to the teen suicide epidemic. From these
types of abuse usually depression and other psychological disorders form, making the risk of
these youth committing suicide very high. Family support is important as well, A Teen with an
adequate support network of friends, family, and religious affiliations, peer groups or
extracurricular activities may have an outlet to deal with everyday frustrations, but many teen s
don t believe they have that, and feel disconnected and isolated from family and friends. These
teens have an increased risk for suicide (kidsHealth.org). Additionally the issue of sexuality and
an unsupportive family or peer group is also detrimental to the teen s psyche and plays a major
role in teen suicide. Lastly, sudden trauma in a teen s life is very influential on a suicide
decision. The loss of a parent, sibling, or loved one can cause the teen to react by committing or
attempting suicide. Teenagers are more at risk because they are in a stage of growth in their
lives, and thus the depression or trauma can create a feeling of isolation in their mind. In most
cases there are ways to detect when a person is planning to commit suicide before they actually
carry it out. Teen suicide can be prevented when the warning signs are recognized early on. It is
stated in many studies that teen suicide attempts have been preceded by clear warning

Explore How the Character of Prospero Develops in the...
Prospero is the most central character in Shakespeare s The Tempest . The play revolves around
his personal task to regain his dukedom, which his brother Antonio usurped from him. Throughout
the play it is shown how Prospero develops and changes as a character and seems a different
person to the character we first meet in Act One Scene Two. How Prosperos character develops
happens in a variety of ways, one of the most potent ways appearing to be the treatment of the other
characters within the play. Prospero s character is introduced into the play in Act One Scene Two,
after the tempesthas shipwrecked Antonio and Alonso s ship. We firstly come to realise that
Prospero and Miranda are looking down upon the tempest and so the... Show more content on

It is easy to see this by the way that Prospero speaks to him using sub human terms such as Thou
poisonous slave (4) and him being called a fish (5).
Yet as Prospero s character develops, he appears to become less vengeful. Caliban as a sub (or non)
human has no rights at all. Furthermore, he was part of a murder plot to kill Prospero so it
would not be unusual for the audience to expect Prospero to use his power to get rid of Caliban.
Yet in the final act of the scene of the play, Caliban says:
Ay, that I will; and I ll be wise hereafter
And seek for grace. (6)
Caliban here repents and agrees to seek grace and is simply allowed to go and live on the Island.
This does not mirror the actions of Prospero at the beginning and throughout the play. He seems to
play the role of the cruel sorcerer using his powers to gain control over people and scare them. Yet
his action towards Caliban in Act Five seems unlike the character that he has been throughout the
play.
How he treats Caliban does mirror how he is treats the rest of the characters in the final scene. He
does not seem to punish any of the characters, even his brother Antonio. It appears to me that once
he has completed the task he wanted to complete and so is able to become Duke of Milan once
again he is a more compassionate person. He lets the other characters go free from their
punishments. The only characters who seem to be punished are Trinculo and Stephano but they are

Essay on Biblical Allusions in Lord of the Flies
Biblical Allusions in Lord of the Flies
In the story, Lord of the Flies, there are many biblical allusions; Simon represents Jesus, the pig s
head represents Satan or rather their satanic sides, Jack represents Judas, and the island represents
the Garden of Eden. Through out this novel these allusions play large parts in the story and ideals
place in the story.
Simon, one of the major characters in the story, is set as the allusion of Jesus. Christ always had
an affinity with children; in Ch. 4, he shows his way with the littluns by picking fruit for them.
This shows his goodness by nature. Also, like Christ, he saw the atavistic problem of the hunters
and tried to bring them back to good. As in the bible, Simon, like Christ, dies ... Show more content

The Pig s head, dubbed Lord of the Flies and as one of Satan s names is Beelzebub (Mt. 12:24)
which means Lord of the flies. shows that the pigs head represents Satan. When Simon goes off
to meditate he is confronted with the pig s head, as Jesus was confronted with Satan when he
left for forty days and forty nights. Simon s talk with the Lord of the Flies is akin to Christ s
temptation by Satan. In the New Testament, Satan tells Christ not to kill himself for us but to
enjoy life and power. Simon is told that if he doesn t run off and play , the hunters and the Lord of
the Flies will do you in.
Jack, one of the lead characters in the novel, alludes to the biblical figure Judas for his betrayal to
the good of the people brought forth by Jesus. Jack is the reason Simon is killed, for he betrayed
Ralph s rules and brought forth the evil within the children s minds. Jack refuses Ralph s ideas and
regulations in trade for fun and hunting. This shows his betrayal to the good of man and his want to
bring evil forth to the island.
The island, in the novel, represents the Garden of Eden. In particular Simon s little hideout can be
related to the garden of Eden as that what was once beautiful becomes terrifying with the pig s
head being placed in the centre of his hideout. The island that was once lovely, seeming like
paradise, becomes burnt by the end of the novel, like dead wood,

The Conversion Of Solar ( Pv ) Energy Into Hydrogen Gas...
Name: Institution: Course: Instructor: Date: The Conversion of Solar (PV) Energy into
Hydrogen Gas for Fuel Cells. Introduction Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight into
direct current. For this to be achieved, semi conducting materials would be required to induce
the photovoltaic effect. A photovoltaic system comprises solar panels, each fitted with a
number of solar cells that supply solar energy to the system. In the absence of sunlight, solar
power would be available for household or commercial lighting applications (Ratlamwala 86).
This paper examines the feasibility of converting solar PV electricity into hydrogen for fuel cells
based on: cost of hydrogen production (per kilogram), the quantity of solar power required to
generate hydrogen (per kilogram), the feasibility of the technology in the UAE amid the costs
and efficiencies of the system components. Question 1 Just like the rest of the world, the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Middle East have intensified efforts to curb the global warming
menace. Several independent studies (e.g. Harder 790 Radhi 18) have pointed out that
overdependence on fossil fuels tends to heighten global warming. At a glance, hydrogen can be
considered as an ideal substitute to fossil fuels. Hydrogen provides about three times of renewable
energy harnessed from natural gas. When hydrogen is used in energy production, pure water is
emitted as the sole by product of the process (Radhi 12).

Leadership in Remember the Titans Essay
Remember the Titans
In the movie Remember the Titans , there are many management concepts covered throughout the
movie and he is the agent in the movie. The players on the Titans are the targets of the influence.
Remember the Titans is the perfect movie for Exam 3. It covers many topics that were on the
exam, and this class has given me a different way of looking at the movie. I have seen the movie
many times, but I never looked at it from a management perspective. It now makes sense to me to
look at a football team, or any other type of sports team, from a management point of view.
Coach Herman Boone, who is played by Denzel Washington, is a very influential person. He is a

Their opponents do not score against them often in the movie.
In the movie, Coach Boone is a master motivator. He does an excellent job of energizing his
players, sustaining the motivation, directing the motivation to the right players at the right time,
and also knowing when to stop motivating. The satisfaction progression hypothesis is also
displayed in the movie. Coach Boone knows that the small things, such as making the routine
plays in the game, must be done first before the main goal can be achieved, winning the game.
He also has a high expectancy of his team. He believes that the effort of his team will lead to
performance and that the performance will lead to results. He expects his team to practice just as
hard as they play in the game. Julius Campbell and Gary Bertier, the two main characters on the
team, are also excellent motivators. They get their teammates pumped up before and during the
game.
As with most sports teams, the Titans have an autocratic leadership style. Coach Boone is the one
and only person who makes the decisions, he is the main man in charge. The style is productive,
and the team wins games. Although he has assistant coaches, such as Bill Yoast who is the
defensive coordinator, all the decisions must go through Coach Boone first. The democratic
leadership style is not applicable on a football team because that s why teams have coaches. The
team does not make group decisions. Coach Boone also uses Job Enlargement in Remember the

Descriptive Essay On Fishing
My father and I have be going on an annual fishing trip since I was eight. Every summer, we
would go out and sit for hours waiting for something to bite. Last year my father made a
poignant observation, he noted that in recent years there seemed to be less fish. He s been doing
this trip since he was my age and where he used to at least get some pull, he now has to wait
nearly twice as long for anything. I ve since come to realize that our ocean is running out of fish. We
are overexploiting a natural resource and doing nothing to stop it. The current large scale fishing
operations are not sustainable ecologically or economically.
large fish are disappearing from the ocean at alarmingly high rates. There has been a 90% decline
in the top predator fish abundance in the world between 1955 and 2000. Most industrial fishing
techniques are overly aggressive to marine environments in that they attract an abundance of
bycatch. The three primary techniques are surface long line Fishing where chains more than 100
kilometers long are floated in the ocean with thousands of baited hooks, fish aggregating devices
use long nets going down 300 meters that are left for days and just collect fish indiscriminately,
finally and perhaps the worst being bottom Trawling which involves a long heavily weighed net
dragged across seafloor. Fish aggregating devices are too indiscriminate in what kind of marine life
they capture. They are often deployed with the intention of catching skipjack

The Role Of Marketing In A Corporate Environment
The Role Of Marketing In A Corporate Environment
The definition of Marketing in the eleventh edition of Marketing: An Introduction is stated as the
process by which companies create value for customers and build strong customer relationship in
order to capture value from customers in return. How does the corporate world successfully merge
with marketing to satisfy the consumers opinion of value? By designing a customer driven
marketing strategy. One theory from The Times 100 states that Effective marketing demands the
identification and understanding of target markets. Having a clear understanding of target markets
create an entry into providing a product that will sell. Marketing Mix also known as the four P s
(Product, Price, Promotion, and Distribution (Price) created in 1960 by McCarthy is used by
marketers throughout the world. Broken down into their segments and defined as:
Product anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that
might satisfy a want or need.
Price amount of money charged for a product or service.
Promotion activities that communicate the merits of the product and persuade target customers to
buy it.
Place (distribution) company activities that make the product available to target consumers.
With social and demographic changes the sale of products can be affected. So if companies want to
continue to add value to products there must be the introduction of services to the mix.

Disadvantages Of Group Decision Making
1. Introduction Decision making means to choose the best alternative over many solutions to a
problem or task and it is crucial to the success of a given project or firm. However is it also seen
more widely as a process which includes eight major steps which are: Identification of the
problem, identification of decision criteria, allocation of weights to criteria, developments of
alternatives, Analysis of alternatives, selection of an alternative, implementation of the
alternative and evaluation of decision effectiveness. This process is common to all types of
decision making, however in this essay it will be attentively analysed Group decision making.
Group decision making is a modus operandi by which many people conjointly, inspect a given
problem or issue and find a commonly thought solution. These people analyse in depth each
possible strategy that comes up and elect the best option. People composing these working
groups can either have the same cultural background or have different ones but often share a
common task. These people are generally the most affected by the decision taken and are chosen
because of their skills. The number of people comprising these groups may vary indeed. In this
essay the effectiveness and the pros and cons of group decision making will be scrutinized. 2.

taken, oftentimes this results in a time loss. This means that generally groups are not time efficient
as individuals. Lastly, it regularly happens that group components feel inhibited to expose personal

low social anxiety would report greater interpersonal connectedness following face to face and

conversation mediums (face to face, phone or instant messaging) during which they engaged in an
interaction with an unfamiliar partner. Participants completed a measure of social anxiety before
the interaction and measures of interpersonal connectedness prior to and following the interaction.
Results revealed that level of social anxiety is a significant contingent condition for the association
between type of conversation medium and attitude homophily (i.e., a measure of interpersonal

  • 3. Two Approaches Of Pragmatics According to Schmitt (2010), there are two approaches of pragmatics, a cognitive or psychological approach which is exploring the relation between linguistic meaning of utterances, the decontextualized, what speakers mean by their utterances on a particular situation and how hearer interpret those utterances on those particular situations. Cognitive approach was developed by philosophers Austin, Searle, and Grice. On the other hand, social pragmaticsapproach which focuses on the communicative exchanges between individuals in social, cultural and other contextual factors. Brown and Levinson (1978 1987) introduced face model of politeness to this approach. The main objective of pragmatics is to study on how non native speakers comprehend and produce speech acts in a target language. Speech act is not the whole of pragmatics, but is perhaps currently the most important part of the subject. Many of the topics addressed in both narrow and broad views derive from three major pragmatic theories: Speech Acts, Conversational Implicatures, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In indirect speech acts the speaker communicates to the hearer more than he actually says by way of depending on their mutually shared background information either both linguistic and nonlinguistic together with the powers of rationality and inference on the part of the hearer. To be more specific, to explain the indirect speech acts can be say it is a theory of speech acts certain general principles of cooperative conversation (Searle, 1979, p. 31 32). • 4. Ethos And Pathos In Bernard Roth s The Achievement Habit That s a goooooood reason (Roth 42). This is a quote from the second chapter of Bernard Roth s book, The Achievement Habit. Mr. Roth, a professor at Stanford, effectively uses Aristotle s Rhetorical Triangle containing ethos, pathos, and logos in chapter 2 of his book to show that reasons are bullshit. Mr. Roth effectively has ethos in his book. Bernard Roth the Author of the book, The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, And Take Command of Your Life, had multiple different example of how he is a creditable source. Mr. Roth has been a professor and Standford for 52 years. While being a professor, in 1996 he helped to design Designer in Society also known as d.school. The hope for the program is to get students to think differently about how they can reach their goals in life. The program is a pretty big deal, Wall Street Journal once called it the hottest graduate program. Bernard Roth got his PhD in Mechanical engineering at Columbia, so he knows his stuff. Lastly, the final thing that make him a creditable source is Roth was awarded the Honorary PhD from the University of Paris. The University of Paris only award these Honorary PhD s to people who makes a contribution to a specific field or to a society in general. Bernard Roth has ethos because he has many degrees and achievements to back him up. Second, Bernard Roth shows pathos, this mean emotion, when he says Love is the ultimate unreasonable activity (Roth 50). This makes Roth sound heartless like he has no capacity for emotion. Roth then goes into more details and explains that most times when we ask a person why they love someone they go into a list of reasons, but if you look hard enough you could find all those qualities in someone else. Some say loves is just a form of projection where you or I might call it fate. When Roth says loves is unreasonable he is showing a lack of emotion which in it own shape is emotion. Bernard Roth also says in chapter 2 of his book, Projection is a common response (Roth 47). When we are guilty of doing something often times we will project it on to someone else. Say one of my friends has a problem with telling the truth, they might think that everyone is always lying to them. This is how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Byronic Hero Of Our Time By Mikhail Lermontov Pechorin A Byronic Hero A Hero of Our Time, written by Mikhail Lermontov, consists of 5 stories that reflect the life, the idea and the personality of the main character named Pechorin. Pechorin is not a typical hero in romantic literature perspective; instead, he is a great representation of a pathetic Byronic hero that more commonly appears in the time of Lermontov. Different from a traditional hero and as a typical Byronic hero, Pechorin is reflected to be self centered and manipulative in many parts of the story. His selfishness is shown through his indifference to others and through the despicable methods of getting the things he wants. • 9. Plato s The Nicomachean Ethics In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presents the reader with a guide to living a good life. He claims the highest good is happiness, and the way to obtain it is through the use of reason. In order to better comprehend Aristotle s ideas regarding happiness, we will explain his conception of eudaimonia and excellence through rational activity. Then, we will examine this concept of rational activity in relation to the aristotelian concept of self sufficiency. At the end of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle offers a seemingly divergent point of view. However, we will argue that these final reflections on happinessdescribe the best way to experience a good life. All individuals are in search of some good. Every one of our actions, skills and choices has an aim, and this aim is defined as the good of that particular activity (1094a1 3). While these activities are distinct, some may be classed into broader faculties. For example, ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, logic and epistemology are all activities that fall under the more general faculty of philosophy. As a result, the individual ends of the former all work towards the superior good of the latter. (1094a9 16). However, such ends are incomplete they are not pursued for their own sake, but for the sake of another superior goal. As we examine the categorization of activity, is important to distinguish between instrumental value and intrinsic value. An action or skill with instrumental value is not pursued for its own ... • 12. Recycling At The United Kingdom Recycling is a process that continues to develop and become more popular within waste management. As there is a wide amount of literature relating to this topic the following review will focus in on aspects such as recycling behaviours and recycling in the curriculum. Recycling in the United Kingdom Recycling is the method by which waste is collected and processed into raw materials, which in turn are processed into new products (Prestin and Pearce, 2010). This helps the UK comply with the EC Landfill Directive targets that state to reduce the quantity of municipal waste going to landfill sites (Kurz et al, 2007). The primary goal of recycling schemes is to increase the amount of material that is collected and recycled, meaning that less waste is going to disposal (Lane and Wagner, 2013). Woodard et al (2004) stated that the percentage of households in the United Kingdom involved in recycling needed to continue to increase to reach the national target of recycling household waste, therefore local authorities got involved in incentives, which is discussed later in the review. (Woodard et al, 2004). A main concern in modern society is the current state of the environment; it is a topic that is frequently examined in research. It has been found that people want to act in a way to enhance sustainability in the environment and recycling is a fairly simple behaviour which has a major impact on this. Recycling is also economically feasible whilst having great impacts on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Obedience could be attained only when a child has fully developed and controlled his/her will, and he/she freely chooses to follow other s instruction or orders. This could happen because the child recognizes that the person who gives the order loves him/her and is more knowledgeable than him/her, also this child is sure that the order given will be useful to perfect his/her skill. Having explained the discipline and obedience, now we could conclude that these two features will only be developed in a child if he/she is already able to control the inner power from within. Myoglobin is a typical globular protein in that it is a highly folded compact structure with most of the hydrophobic amino acidresidues buried in the interior and many of the polar residues on the surface. X ray crystallography revealed that the single polypeptide chain of myoglobin consist of entirely of eight (labelled A H) alpha helical. One of these is to a histidine residue which lies eight residues along helix F of hemoglobin, the proximal hitidine (His F8). The sixth bond is to one of the oxygen atoms in a molecule of oxygen. Near to where the oxygen binds to the heme group is another histidine residue, the distal histidine (His E7). This serves two very important functions. First, preventing neightboring hemoglobin molecules coming into contact with one another and oxidizing to the Fe3+ state, cause no longer bind to oxygen. Sencond, lowering the affinity of the heme for CO by preventing carbon monoxide binding with the most favourable configuration to the Fe2+. This is important because the protein can no longer bind oxygen once CO has bound irreversibly to the heme,. Thus, although the oxygen binding site in hemoglobin and myglobin is only a small part of the whole protein, the polypeptide chain modulates the function of the heme prosthetic group. Hemoglobin can bind four molecules of oxygen due to its four heme groups, whereas myoglobin can only bind to one oxygen. The kinetics of oxygen binding of hemoglobin and myoglobin are quite different. Myoglogin exhibit a hyperbolic oxygen binding curve and hemoglobin exhibit a sigmoidial oxygen binding curve. Parallelism In Grapes Of Wrath Lydia Aremu Kleyn AP Literature/period 6 August 2017 Renewal in The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck usually uses California and the Salinas valley as his setting and is usually placed in the 30s when the great depression occurred. The Grapes of Wrath is about a family living in Oklahoma and they are farmers during the period called the dustbowl in which culture was rough because there were droughts and conditions were not suitable for farming. This family, because they are not doing too well, decide to move to California to find jobs and dignity. The author writes about the struggle of a family during and Great Depression and also the struggle of each individual as their lives are being torn apart. He not only shows how they go through these hardships, but also how they will overcome them. In John Steinbeck s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, he argues that all who follow the ways of the Bible will become renewed at the end. He uses religion and parallelism in order to bring to light, the chance of hope that is evident within dire circumstances, and project changes within people during turmoil. The Grapes of Wrath incorporates parallels between both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Steinbeck uses biblical symbols from the book Exodus to tell the story of the Joad family s journey to California. The Dust Bowl, which is the reason they are leaving Oklahoma, is a representation of the plague. Another symbol used in this novel is Noah s Ark. This represents the truck they used ... The Importance Of Intercultural Communication People communicate every day through different means, including speech and writing, and the use of languages such as English for both local and global interaction is becoming popular among those of different cultural backgrounds. The high demand in the use of English in the fields of international politics, science and technology has led to the global spread of the language. Due to this, English is currently seen as an international language, and its ownership is considered to be denationalised and renationalised. The understanding of this ownership status is crucial in establishing a successful and effective practice or study of intercultural communication, by acknowledging the variations of English, as well as cultural differences in communication styles within classroom and business contexts. First, since English has become an international language, its ownership is denationalised and renationalised. The concept of denationalisation proposed by Smith suggests that English is no longer just owned by countries such as the United Kingdom or the United States, but by various other countries around the world that also use the language. Many acts against witchcraftwere passed, the one dated closest to the Salem witch trials was the Witchcraft Act of 1604 that moved trials of the supposed witches from churches to actual courts. The fact that they were once held in churches rather than courts seems like a biased situation to me. The puritans were afraid of witchcraft so having the church conduct the trials of said witches could only mean that death was certain. The puritanfaith to my understanding was a tough faith to follow, especially for women. Gender roles were heavily put upon Puritan women, women were seen as inferior beings that needed to be dominated by a male figure, and those who broke the mold were viewed as dangerous. When speaking of puritan women and church, women were not allowed to pray with the congregation or lead a prayer. So in essence, this embellished half truth of a story is as true as the facts from a history book bringing us one step closer to the ultimate truth. The personal witnessing of events is a critical point of view in telling a true story. It may not be the entire truth, but it is the truth, as it seemed to the individual. The ideas get mixed up; you tend to miss a lot. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal feeling of what seemed to happen, which makes the story seem untrue. But in fact represents the truth exactly how it seemed. (677) Such as is the case of Curt Lemon s death. Rat Kiley was having a good time, laughing with his best friend when Lemon stepped into the sunlight. In that instant he must have thought that the sunlight had killed him. But if I could ever get the story right...then you would believe the last thing Curt Lemon believed, which for him must ve been the final truth. Most of them labour the greater part of their time for mere subsistence; and the scanty portion of freedom which remains to them so troubles them that they use every exertion to get rid of it. Oh, the destiny of man! Werther s offhanded comment in The Sorrows of Young Werther provides insight on how people perceive work and freedom during his time, and how that relates to the way modern society perceives it as well. People like to assume society has progressed in many ways in the last 200 years, but in some ways, habits have not changed much. The working and recreational habits of the middle class man as revealed through Sorrows are not far removed from the way college students and working adults treat the same time. Werther makes a point of saying that the people he meets in Walheim are like the type one would meet everywhere. Much of their time is spent working for survival, whether that be in a more gentleman like job or as simple as farming. Some, like Werther, are exempt from this sort of life style because of their status. He, like Lotte and Albert, are upper middle class, typically because of the status of their parents. In the 1700 s, it was difficult for most people not already around that social range to suddenly rise up into it. Due to changing ideas concerning social hierarchies and the increased freedom in colonies slowly wore down this well established barrier, but it had not yet broken down to the point it is ... The most important implication derives from the lack of information demonstrated by all income segments of the consumer sample. This situation suggests that what is needed is not more and tougher laws, but rather more information made available to ore individuals concerning their rights as consumers. The present research has demonstrated that one other variable is important: with the exception of a few areas of the law, both consumers and attorneys know very little about their rights as consumers. Through out this novel these allusions play large parts in the story and ideals place in the story. Simon, one of the major characters in the story, is set as the allusion of Jesus. Christ always had an affinity with children; in Ch. 4, he shows his way with the littluns by picking fruit for them. This shows his goodness by nature. The Pig s head, dubbed Lord of the Flies and as one of Satan s names is Beelzebub (Mt. 12:24) which means Lord of the flies. shows that the pigs head represents Satan. When Simon goes off to meditate he is confronted with the pig s head, as Jesus was confronted with Satan when he left for forty days and forty nights. Simon s talk with the Lord of the Flies is akin to Christ s temptation by Satan. In the New Testament, Satan tells Christ not to kill himself for us but to enjoy life and power. Simon is told that if he doesn t run off and play , the hunters and the Lord of the Flies will do you in. Jack, one of the lead characters in the novel, alludes to the biblical figure Judas for his betrayal to the good of the people brought forth by Jesus. Jack is the reason Simon is killed, for he betrayed Ralph s rules and brought forth the evil within the children s minds. Jack refuses Ralph s ideas and regulations in trade for fun and hunting. This shows his betrayal to the good of man and his want to bring evil forth to the island. The island, in the novel, represents the Garden of Eden. In particular Simon s little hideout can be related to the garden of Eden as that what was once beautiful becomes terrifying with the pig s head being placed in the centre of his hideout. Introduction Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight into direct current. For this to be achieved, semi conducting materials would be required to induce the photovoltaic effect. A photovoltaic system comprises solar panels, each fitted with a number of solar cells that supply solar energy to the system. In the absence of sunlight, solar power would be available for household or commercial lighting applications (Ratlamwala 86). This paper examines the feasibility of converting solar PV electricity into hydrogen for fuel cells based on: cost of hydrogen production (per kilogram), the quantity of solar power required to generate hydrogen (per kilogram), the feasibility of the technology in the UAE amid the costs and efficiencies of the system components. Question 1 Just like the rest of the world, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Middle East have intensified efforts to curb the global warming menace. Several independent studies (e.g. Harder 790 Radhi 18) have pointed out that overdependence on fossil fuels tends to heighten global warming. At a glance, hydrogen can be considered as an ideal substitute to fossil fuels. Hydrogen provides about three times of renewable energy harnessed from natural gas.
