The Dred Scott Case On The New Territories Of The West Essay
At the beginning of the 1860s, the national Democratic party split in half. It had split into the Northern
Democrats and the Southern Democrats. They split because of the issue of slavery, which was very
alive at the time. As well, the Dred Scott case played an important role in the split of the party. The
Northern Democrats didn t want slavery to expand into the new territory. On the other end, Southern
Democrats called for the preservation of slavery within their states and the expansion into the new
territories of the west. Their contentious battles at the national convention in both Charleston and
Baltimore prove that they were a party divided. Because of this, it would eventually lead to the
election of Abraham Lincoln and the secession of the southern states. The Northern Democrats
believed that slavery needed to be halted to the states they were already in. If it moved into new
territory, it would throw off the balance of free and slave states. They also called for popular
sovereignty. Popular sovereignty calls for a democratic government by the people and for the people.
Stephen Douglas ran for the Northern Democrats and upheld their position on the matter of slavery
expansion and popular sovereignty. As well, he upheld the prevention of disunion. The Northern
Democrats were angered that the Southern Democrats were calling for the expansion of slavery to the
new territories and that is what ultimately split them from the Southern Democrats. On the other end,

The Proteins Of Carbohydrates And Carbohydrates
Introduction
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are organic molecules found in every living
organism. These macromolecules are large carbon based structures. The macromolecules are
assembled by joining several smaller units, called monomers, together through a chemical reaction
called dehydration synthesis. The resulting polymer can be disassembled through the complementary
process called hydrolysis.Carbohydrates are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a 1:2:1
ratio. This means that for every carbon atom present in the carbohydrate there are two hydrogen atoms
and one oxygen atom present. The monomers for carbohydrates are referred to as monosaccharides.
When many monosaccharides are chained together the resulting molecule is called a polysaccharide.
Carbohydrates are used by living organisms as an important source of energy. Examples of
carbohydrates include glucose, fructose, sucrose, galactose, ribose, deoxyribose, cellulose and
chitin.Lipids are also made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen but the ratio of carbon, hydrogen, and
oxygen is not 1:2:1. Instead, lipids have a much higher number of carbons and hydrogens with few
oxygen atoms present. The nonpolar bonds that form between the carbon and hydrogen atoms of a
lipid cause them to be hydrophobic, or water repellent, molecules. This explains why water and oil do
not mix. The large number of carbon to hydrogen bonds also serves to make lipids energy rich storage
molecules. One gram of lipid stores

Hinduism In Life Of Pi
Out of the three religions that Pi practiced, he was more adapted more into Hinduism owing to the fact
that he was born into to it, and one can see he sincerely and openly believed the Hinduism creed more
than any of the others he studied, which is one of the main reasons he survived his ordeal.
In Martel s book Life of Pi, the main character Piscine Molitor studied three different religions, one of
those being Hinduism; the world s third largest religion following Christianity and Islam ( Hinduism ).
The Hinduism faith emerged around the year 1500 BC, and it flourished all around the world, but
mainly in the country where Pi was located India ( Hinduism ). Hindus believe that all creatures are
sacred, and should be protected; which explains why most Hindus are vegetarians, including Piscine (

Pi was born into the Hinduism, becoming involved in its rites and rituals as an infant ( Life of Pi ).
One of the rituals of being a Hindu is believing that all animals are sacred. For Pi, being stranded out
on the Pacific Ocean, this was a problem for him. Pi had no other source of food except for the few
packages on the lifeboat, which were quickly running out. Pi hesitates to kill one of flying fish that
land on his lifeboat, but the lifelong pacifist and vegetarian breaks the fish s neck ( Life of Pi ). It was
hard for Pi to hurt the fish and then he remembered a story from the Hindu religion of Markandeya
and falling out of Vishnu s mouth into the universe. This inspired him to see how small and
meaningless his suffering actually was. (Martel). So his faith in Hinduism was a double sided sword in
which he found more light than darkness

Hummingbird Research Paper
The hummingbird is one of the most unique animals on our planet. They are equipped with freaky
flying abilities and fantastically fast traits, all which make them the distinct animals that they are. How
everyday can be a struggle for these nectar consuming flyers just puts me in awe.
Hummingbirds have multiple special characteristics that help them to survive in the wilderness.
Hummingbirds have a heart rate of 1,200 bpm when flying, and take about 250 breaths per minute.
Hummingbirds can beat their wings up to 200 times per second, which, as you may have guessed,
takes up a lot of energy. This helps them to move forwards, backwards, hover, and even move upside
down. Hummingbirds spend most of their days gathering nectar to use as energy. These frequent flyers
are also quite small and light. The smallest hummingbird, the Bee Hummingbird, is only 5 cm in
length while the largest hummingbird, the Giant Hummingbird, is 20 cm in length. Most
hummingbirds weigh less than a nickel. This helps them move around quickly and efficiently, and also
helps them to gather nectar from small flowers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For starters, hummingbirds are surprisingly intelligent for their minuscule size. Hummingbirds have
the largest percentage of brain size to body size of all the species of birds at 4.2%. They can also
remember which flowers they have visited and how long it takes a flower to refill. It takes
hummingbirds lots of energy to fly, and they even use lots of energy while perching. This is why
hummingbirds enter a hibernation like state called torpor which slows down their heart rate down to
1/15 of what it is normally. Hummingbirds can also see near ultraviolet light, which is why colors like
red stand out so much to

Judy Bacas Murals Essay
An Inspiration Across Cultures
Public art conquers so much more than the simple task of making the street a little easier to look at. It
involves those who created it, those who supplied the means to create it, and those whose lives it
continues to impact. Wall paintings in particular take an important role in working for a greater good.
Judith F. Baca, a Hispanic American woman and artist activist has contributed an unaccountable
amount to the mural movement in Los Angeles. She has accomplished this by giving individuals the
chance to create art and develop a sense of pride, she has taught younger generations a respect for
their ethnic identity, and from the many walks of life that continue to view her ... Show more content

The simple fact that Baca is a woman is extremely important when it comes to evaluating her impact
on others. Being a woman and reaching out for social change the way that Judy Baca does takes much
dedication and passion. Bell hooks writes about the commodification of women in the art world: ...an
undiscerning marketplace seeks to confine, limit, and even destroy our artistic freedom and practice.
(Hooks 1981, 17). While Baca comes from the historically challenged feminine perspective, she can
reach the youth that she works with because of their disadvantaged perspective as well. They are more
apt to listen and learn from her because she has already overcome the challenge of succeeding in as a
Hispanic American woman in a patriarchal society.
Baca s commitment led her to found the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) along with
film maker Donna Dietch and artist Christina Schlesinger in Venice, California. SPARC has facilitated
in the creation, preservation and documentation of public art in the Los Angeles area. In this way
SPARC has been able to get the community involved in art and has given a voice to peoples of color.
In addition, the center has organized symposia and exhibitions that draw attention to the multitude of
cultures that make up the area as well as the entire country (Brown 1996, 28).

The Cultural Impact Of Technology
The world today is very different from the world our grandparents lived in. There are a lot of
advancements in technology that make things obviously different, but there are also many changes in
our culture and society that has been affected by technological changes that many people fail to
realize. One film that showcases the cultural impact of technology is the movie Hackers, directed by
Lain Softley. The film is centered around the latest technology available (in 1995 when the film was
released) and the growing culture centered around the elite hacker community. The premise of the film
is that a group of hackers are being framed for a virus that was launched to capsize ships if a demand
for five million dollars was not met. The group of hackers work together to prove that they are
innocent by hacking into the database of a major corporation. In that database is the virus that was
created by the company s head of cyber security that was supposed to steal a total of twenty five
million dollars. The ships that were to be destroyed were all linked through satellite connections. Each
ship is automatically guided and managed by a central computer. While it is commonplace for
companies today to use satellite guidance systems and remote access to onboard computers, the movie
does nudge the story along by making the whole system extremely vulnerable. Such things like three
character passwords and single centralized command centers are obvious flaws with the system used

Ethical Arguments Against Torture
Discussions concerning torture have always been controversial and upsetting. For the benefit of many,
torture seems excusable and permissible when it is guaranteed to yield vital and necessary
information. Even from an act utilitarian standpoint, torture is acceptable when its actions produce the
highest happiness in numbers. But from a rule utilitarian perspective, torture violates universal truths
and is not effective everywhere at all times, since it is not always guaranteed to produce the same
result. This essay will argue against torture on the basis that it is unethical no matter what the situation
is or who the suspect may be. The Oxford English Dictionary provides two main entries to define the
word torture and, for the sake of the unusual circumstances presented in the time bomb case, the
second entry will be used as a springboard for the rule utilitarian argument against torturing a suspect
and/or his child. According to the OED s second entry, the definition of torture is To inflict severe pain
or suffering upon; to torment; to distress or afflict grievously; also, to exercise the mind severely. By
examining this definition, emphasis should be placed on two main parts: 1. To inflict severe pain or
suffering upon and 2. To exercise the mind severely. We will work from these parts to break down the

The act of torture itself has the effect of a double edged sword on the suspect and the torturer. To
exercise the mind severely is not just a definition limited to the suspect but encompasses all
participants of the torture as well. The psychological stresses that result from this leave lasting effects
on the victim and the perpetrator and do nothing for the morale of either. It also reduces the
perpetrator and his country to a primitive state of justice and leaves an embarrassing trail of
unnecessary and endless

aristocrats, and religious rites. Shi Jing was formed during Zhou dynasty over a period exceeding half

Shi Jing s subject varies between its three sections with feng describing the lives and things important
to the common folk, ya dealing with political issues more of the concern of the aristocrats both for
formal and informal occasions, and song for the purpose of religious activities. Examples of these are
Rooster Crows from feng setting a social expectation for the interaction between married couples
through example, Huge Rat from ya politically satirizing misrule, and We Have in Hand from song
which was used for and describes the process of a sacrificial ceremony. The subject of Chu Ci is a
departure from Shi Jing s functionality as Chu Ci addresses the mystical, as it is mostly for literary and
poetic merit and involves references to and interactions with deities and spiritual journeys. Li Sao
describes Qu Yuan s spiritual journey populated with deities and The Nine Songs describes gods and
goddess s like The Lord of the East depicts a sun god comparable Apollo. Shi Jing s lines with four

Internal Stress In Law Enforcement
There are many stress categories that law enforcement will face when it comes to performing their
occupational duties. The first stress category is internal or individual stress. Stress can happen at any
time especially on the internal side as there is always a chance of an officer worrying about the
competency to handle an assignment. If the assignment they are working on is causing individual
stress the feelings of helplessness and vulnerability starts to happen when they feel the pressure of
trying to finish an assignment. Officers start to feel the internal stress that everyone is counting on
them to get the assignment they are working on in perfect working order. Since crime never sleeps the
assignments that make officers internally stress over each assignment critical which can lead to more
time being spent on duty rather than off duty. The dearth of time for personal development can
translate into divorce, suicide, alcoholism, or burnout . The stress of the job and having a family takes
its toll but those who can cope with the internal stress of their job and family are the one that can have
both at the same time. Although there are some factors of internal stress that can lead officers to
eventually end their career with no family, no friends other than a few cops and no outside interests
Officers that have internal stress can have feelings that their trapped in their profession because the
internal stress of being a law enforcement officers is just to

The Agency theory arises when business unit managers want to maximize their bonus potential by act

accurate and strategically sound budget compared to traditional budgeting. This shows that budget and
e budgeting complement each other to gain effective and efficient control system.
According to Pilkington and Crowther (2007), Beyond Budgeting could erase the budget limitation by
providing flexibility, coordination and responsiveness. This alternative requires a complete overhaul
of the organization culture and elevation to the management style. Beyond Budgeting Round Table

more adaptive to environmental improvement. Managers are welcomed to design a new management
model which could drive organizational behaviour and influence bottom line management (Beyond

negative impacts on the organization and should be abandoned altogether and focus on financial and

Compare And Contrast Ancient Rome And Christianity
Ancient Rome vs Christianity Ancient Rome and Christianity experienced many similarities and
differences throughout their time. Because the Roman World began their religion multiple years
before Christianity began to erupt, therefore Christianity was persecuted by the Roman World. The
Roman World based their religion off gods and goddesses while Christianity was based off of Jesus
and his crucifixion on the cross for our sins. These religions share different but in some way similar
purposes, virtue, and destiny. The Romans began their religion by believing that spirits took up
everything around them and that their ancestors watched over them in everything they did. The

Jesus Christ is believed to be the son of God and is considered the human version of God. Christianity
also believes in the Holy Spirit, which is with us always in everything we do. The Christian faith is
based on the belief that Jesus was born in a manger of the virgin Mary. It is believed that he lived a
perfect life where he made no mistakes or sins. Jesus was believed to have died on a cross for our sins
while being spat upon and cursed with a crown of thorns upon his head. Next, Jesus was buried in a
tomb and rose from the dead three days later. Finally, Jesus descended into heaven to be with his
father once again. Christians believe that in order to achieve eternal life you must accept Jesus into
your life by believing that all this information is true and you must ask for forgiveness of your sins.
Christians believe that Jesus will return one day to earth and will judge everyone and will take all
Christians back to heaven with him to be with his father God. Christianity began to take off in Ancient
Rome because of St. Paul. Paul began by creating churches in Asia Minor and Greece. He later began
to take his teachings to ancient Rome. The poor people in ancient Rome began to believe in
Christianity first. Christianity was illegal in Ancient Rome. If followers were caught by Rome they
faced death for their actions. Therefore, Christians had to meet in secret so they were not killed for
their beliefs. In 313 AD the Emperor Constantine, finally

Blind Ambition in Macbeth
Throughout the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the reasoning of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
is completely subverted and undermined by their insatiable ambition. Macbeth was at first reasonable
enough to keep his ambition in check, however it eventually became to strong for even Macbeth and
therefor over powered him. To the contrary, Lady Macbeth was overcome by her ambition from the
very beginning. Reasoning was abandoned after the decision to kill Duncan was made. At that point
we see no serious questioning of the motives of the three witches when they told their cunning and
misleading predictions. Macbeth even went as far as to ask for their advise a second time this second
time would of course lead to his downfall. The decision to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His ambition does not become overbearing until it is fueled by Lady Macbeth s own ambition.
Macbeth s ambition is in sharp contrast to Banquo. Banquo comes across as much more hesitant to
accept the witches prophesy. This contrast was created for a specific reason to highlight Macbeth s
tragic flaw. One critical perspective views Banquo s function as essentially symbolic: he is portrayed
as a man who, like Macbeth, has the capacity for both God s grace and sin; but unlike the protagonist,
he puts little stock in the Weird Sisters, prophecies and does not succumb to their temptations. Banquo
s reluctance to dwell on the witchs predictions therefore underscores, by contrast, the nature of
Macbeth s descent into evil. (Scott; 238) Banquo does not have the same overbearing ambition as
Macbeth and therefor is able to reason with the situation. Banquo s logic is most prevalently seen in
the following quote:
That trusted home
Might yet enkindle you unto the Crown
Besides the Thane of Cawdor, But tis Strange:
And oftentimes, to win us to our Harm.
The Instruments of Darkness tell us Truths,
Win us with honest Trifles, to betray s
In deepest Consequence
Cousins, a Word, I pray you. (Shakespeare; I, iii, 118 124) Banquo speaks this quote immediately after
Macbeth is told that he will be the new Thane of Cawdor. It is a stark warning that shows evidence of
logical deduction and

Employee Performance Reviews Essay
Performance reviews are designed to both evaluate general performance and measure progress around
specific goals. Both negative and positive aspects are incorporated in these reviews as they should
serve as a point of reference to both look back in evaluation and ahead in anticipation. Pulling back
from daily demands in order to assess and review employee performance allows managers to focus
their attention on specific departments and clarify what is high priority to their company. Performance

As it may not seem like a conscious choice, any time an employee offers an excuse for a poor
performance, he or she is trying to clear themselves of any responsibility. This can create tension
between the employee and the manager as the executive s focus tends to be not on the excuse itself,
but on the issue of responsibility. Along with excuses, silence acts in a negative manner for many
reasons; it is obvious that it makes the employee feel awkward. Silence can also be used as
manipulative power play as well as a means of intimidation which can lead to a multitude of other
negativities such as irrelevancies and misconception.
Good performance review techniques and methods come in a variety of forms ranging from the use of
management coaches to the establishment and distribution of written evaluations. Evaluations should
include all direct reports from those employees who work within the department; from beginning to
end, the process of using a questionnaire benefits gloriously to a manager and their employees.
Discovering what employees genuinely think of a manager s work and leadership abilities proves
crucial as it becomes an essential step in maintaining strengths and improving weaknesses. The use of
a hired management coach can help during the performance reviews immensely; as their job is to aide
in the facilitation of meetings, coaches can assist in assuring that the review

Systematic Economic Change and Poverty Reduction: The Effects of Governance on Inequality
Liberalization is a term that has dominated the minds, and governments of Latin America from the
advent of the region encompassing debt crisis of the 1980s. Many reforms, with the idea of opening up
the market and reducing barriers to trade in order to increase growth, control inflation, and reduce
social unrest, have taken hold in the region in notable countries such as Mexico. In, Programs on
Poverty and Inequality: Chile, Mexico, and Peru, John Sheahan explores the reasons as to why
liberalization programs have seemingly worked in some countries, and have had lackluster effects in
others. Chile, for example, is often cited as the shining beacon of economic example in Latin America,
and is also grouped in with the East Asian economies that developed to the level of Western Europe
from the 1980s onwards. Conversely, Mexico has had disappointing growth that has never recovered
to pre 1980s levels, along with social unrest and failures in governance. This paper will explore the
questions: Why does poverty persist so much in some countries in the region e.g. Mexico, and Peru to
a lesser extent, and why does it seem effectively controlled in other parts, such as in Chile? Sheahan
argues that direct social programs are increasing in popularity as effective forms of controlling the
negative effects of liberalization reforms, but that they

Cosque Cave
Many, many years ago, a cave was in use, and many paintings, drawings, and engravings were put on
the walls of the cave. About ten years ago, a man was diving in the Mediterranean and came across
something that no one would ever think about finding. It was a prehistoric painted cave with an
underwater entrance. It is known today as the Cosquer cave.
Jean Cosquer, a professional diver, discovered the cave. He was diving for no particular reason, and
found a wealth of prehistoric art in the cave. He made this discovery in July 1991, and ever since more
and more research is being done on the Cosquer cave. It is firmly dated one of the Paleolithic painted

Most of the work on the walls is engraved. Charcoal and ochre were preferred drawing materials. Less
than one third of the work in the Cosquer cave is painted, and the rest is engraved.
The walls of the cave are decorated with land animals, seals and auks, fifty five hand stencils, and a
representation of a killed man. The Cosquer cave artwork is located more in dark, secret areas and
away from the main area of the cave. Thousands of the finger paintings on the soft wall surface are at
a height of three to four meters high. This would mean that the artists of this cave would have had to
use ladders or a tree trunk to make these markings. The majority of the artwork in the cave is animals.
To this date, representations of one hundred and twenty five animals have been found in this cave.
Horses are the dominant animals displayed in the cave. Caprids, goat like creatures, are the second
most dominant animals displayed. Red deer are also represented on the walls, but bison are more
numerous than the red deer. Researches can not quite figure out where the marine animals fit in with
the other paintings and artwork, but there are marine animals painted and engraved in the cave too.
However, they are the least dominant animals presented in the cave. Thanks to the twelve radiocarbon
records, researchers were able to figure out that

that something is. She does what she is told and tries her best in school to get good grades and
constantly worrying about making anyone disappointed in her especially her parents, that s also what
it s like for me i work hard also to maintain decent grades and doing homework everyday there s a lot
of stress that comes with school and on top of that just wanting to make my parents proud is a feeling i
can understand very well as i read this book. As i got to a mid way point in the book i can also see her
parents point of view and how they were always worrying about her and that yelling at her may have

The Fifth Amendment was included in this final approval and ratification. History of the Fifth
Amendment As originally ratified it was unclear whether the Fifth Amendment applied only against
action taken by the federal government or if it also protected freedoms from state governmental abuse.
The Supreme Court answered this question in Barron v. City of Baltimore, 32 U.S. 243, 7 Pet. 243, 8
L.Ed. 672 (1833), when it ruled that the Fifth Amendment did not apply to the states. This judgment
settled the question until the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868. It guaranteed the citizens of
every state the right to EQUAL PROTECTION of the laws and the right to due process of law.
Following RATIFICATION of the Fourteenth Amendment, the Supreme Court began making
individual freedoms enumerated in the Bill of Rights applicable to the states via the doctrine of
incorporation. Under this doctrine the Court explained through a series of cases that no state may deny
any citizen a fundamental liberty without violating the Fourteenth Amendment s Equal Protection and
Due Process Clauses. The Court has ruled that these fundamental liberties include every liberty set
forth in the Bill of Rights, except the Second Amendment s right to bear arms, the Third Amendment s
right against quartering soldiers, the Seventh Amendment s

Southern Somalia Research Paper
Somalia was colonized by many different countries. It was colonized by Britain, France, Egypt,
Ethiopia, and Italy. Egypt had taken over the coast in 1875. Britain colonized it in 1887. They did this
because they wanted to guard the Suez canal. France took over a part of Somalia because they didn t
get any land in Egypt. In the early 1900 s, Italy gained control of Southern Somalia. They had control
of Southern Somalia until July 1st, 1960 when they gained their own independence. Life during these
colonial times was bad in some places but not all. They were treated unfairly in most places and their
individual culture was not given respect. This was mainly due to Europe wanting it only for the
resources they would get. Italy treated them very well and fairly for a while until they decided to make
the natives adjust to Italian law. They treated them well at first because they were trying not to disturb
the colonies. The colonial government in the British Somaliland was not liked by the people. There
were many uprisings and this made the British abandon the interior of Somalia and they went for the
coasts instead. When they did this, Italy saw an opportunity to take control over the interior. After
World War 2, Somalia was given to the United Nations to become a UN trust territory. They ... Show

The Montgomery Bus Boycott
The Montgomery Bus Boycott The Montgomery bus boycott changed the way people lived and
reacted to each other. The American civil rights movement began a long time ago, as early as the
seventeenth century, with blacks and whites all protesting slavery together. The peak of the civil rights
movement came in the 1950 s starting with the successful bus boycott in Montgomery Alabama. The
civil rights movement was lead by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who preached nonviolence and love for
your enemy. Love your enemies, we do not mean to love them as a friend or intimate. We mean what
the Greeks called agape a disinterested love for all mankind. This love is our regulating ideal and

The separate but equal doctrine is one of the outstanding myths of American history for it is almost
always true that while indeed separate, these facilities are far from equal. Throughout the segregated
public institutions, Negroes have been denied equal share of tax supported service and facilities stated
President Truman s Committee on Civil Rights in 1947. In Topeka, Kansas the Brown s, a Negro
family, lived only four blacks from the white Sumner Elementary School. Linda Carol Brown, an
eight year old girl had to attend a segregated school twenty one blocks from her home because Kansas
s state segregation laws allowed cities to segregate Negro and white students in public elementary
schools. Oliver Brown and twelve other parents of Negro children asked that their children be
admitted to the all white Sumner School, which was much closer to home. The principle refused them
admission, and the parents filed a suit in a federal district court against the Topeka Board of
Education. The suit contended that the refusal to admit the children to the school was a denial of the
equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The descion of the principle lead to the birth of
the most influential and important case of the Twentieth Century, Brown v. Board of Education, 347
U.S. 483 (1954). The federal district court was sympathetic to the Negro cause and agreed that
segregation in public schools had a negative effect on Negro children, but the

Corporate Strategies
Corporate Strategy
Strategy relates to the scope and domain of a corporation s activities and the main issues to use while
evaluating its success. Activity pattern in the strategy is on resource acquisition, commitment and
allocation in accordance to an organization s need, environment, management network and intended
goals(Chew Sharma, 2006).
Corporate Strategy and Culture
An organization s culture creates an important link between the organization s strategy, human
resource management and the human resource. According to Chew Sharma, 2006, organization culture
refers to how things in an organization are undertaken in the normal course work. It is therefore;
correct to say that an organization s culture refers to that aspect about an organization that makes it
uniquely different from other organizations.
Given that organization culture is linked to its strategy, it is clear to say that corporate strategy
formulation will influence working style in the organization(Becker Gehart, 2000). Nestle a
Corporation recently targets to sell it products on an international scope even to the third world
countries. It is working towards changing the mindset of the employees to incorporate an international
outlook.
In their marketing strategy, the corporation emphasizes Good and Healthy Foods where, specific
attributes of others countries are considered. In managing their employees, they are enriching them
with the need to consider other countries in

Crazy Insane
Crazy. Insane. Nuts. All words to describe someone who is mentally ill. But the thing about mental
illness is that it is not physically apparent. In our world it is easier to have a broken bone than a broken
mind. Past and present methods of treating people with mental illness are barbaric, impersonal and a
gross mixture of over and under diagnosing. We as humans have complex brains so it shouldn t come
as a surprise that things sometimes go wrong. But from lobotomies to mental asylums and turning
innocent people with minor conditions into zombies with the use of medication ,the people and system
of our society has failed and keep failing to provide the care needed to treat mental illness. But just

struggle to receive help. We ve gone from the societal notion that being crazy is appalling and needs to
be removed from society, to a social acceptance that almost diminishes the importance and severity of
mental illness. We need more social programs available for everyone suffering from mental illness and

Imperialism And Education
Throughout this semester, all of the novels and poetry that we have read have a great deal to do with
an individual s personal education. Within the last two works, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and
The Jungle Book, present the importance of education in the form of not only enlightenment, but also
as a tool to ensure clarity of mind and ambitions. In a current sense, we are dealing with the same sort
of issues in education. This can in a conceptual way be applied to the difficult idea of combining and
finding a balance between the traditional form of teaching with the technology advanced form of
education that we are beginning to find normal, in contrast with the concept of British imperialism

This is simply an irrational apprehension toward people of different races or countries than your own.
Although the British see India simply as a land to colonize, they are resistant to even contemplating
the idea of accepting some of the Indian traditions. The current pieties of the Indian culture were not
only decimated, but were being suppressed. We also see this form of resistance in education as well.
The state now requires standards of technology to be included in every lesson plan that it taught. For
traditional teachers who have no experience with much of the technology, this can be overwhelming
and they resist it on all fronts because they do not understand it. We see this concept of the expectation
for us to drop the traditional ideals or techniques that we know well for something that is supposedly
better within the jungle in the story The Miracle of Purun Bhagat: He had been, as the Old Law

Act 3 Vs Hamlet Movie Essay
The director that does the best job presenting act three is Kenneth Branagh. In Branagh s act threethe
tone of the movie is much more positive and the scenes are far more colorful than the other two
versions. The colorfulness does a better job of portraying act three since everybody other than Hamlet
is having funand not grieving the death of the king. This is where the other two versions aren t as
great. In those two interpretations, the film is darker and depressing which does not encompass what is
actually happening in the story.Branagh s depiction of Claudius is also a lot more superior and
intelligent. In Branagh sact three Claudius only reacts to the fact that Hamlet knows he is responsible
for the murder and even then his reaction is subtle. In the other two ... Show more content on

Branagh s Hamlet is also greater than the other two since his Hamlet has more of a method to his
madness whereas Zeffirelli s does not. In Zeffireli and Olivier s interpretation of Hamlet, he is a lot
more abusive and aggressive towards the other characters; Zeffirelli s even goes as far to rape his
mother and almost have sex with her. Branagh s act three is superior in this aspect since Hamlet is not
a powerful man but is actually more of a coward and so portraying him physically abusing other
characters does not make any sense. Branagh s portrayal of the queen is also greater than the other
two. Gertrude has a lot more power in his version and is able to stand her ground against Hamlet; she
is also the only one not to have a sexual encounter with Hamlet. This makes Branagh s act three
greater because it is more realistic that the queen would be angry with Hamlet and stand up to him
rather than being submissive to him like the other two depictions. In this version Hamlet is much more
emotional. In the other two Hamlet rarely shows his

The American Dream By Mike Keefe
The American dream is the belief that anyone that lives or that comes to America has the chance to be
rich if they work hard enough. However American dream an unattainable dream because it never
existed. Mike Keefe an American editorial cartoonist of American Pipe Dream uses numerous
techniques to convey the message that the American dream is an optical illusion. In reality most
American live with student loans that they cannot pay because they of under employment, which
causes them credit card debt. Techniques such as the position of people and objects, race and facial
expression are used to show the American dream is mirage.
America is known as the land of freedom and opportunity. A country where a person s background
race, religion and gender does not affect a person s dream. In whatever way this American dream is
dead in fact it never existed. The text at the left corner has a precise description of what the American
dream truly is, The American pipe dream with attached mirage. Americans have to get an overpriced
education, have huge school loans, get underpaying jobs, which will cause them to have credit card
debt, which will take their rest of their life to fix. This means they can not buy house, cars or anything
because in America a person s credit score determines whether that person will get anything in life.
Even with all of these obstacles Americans are told to achieve a dream that is an illusion created by
the fading people that belief that the future

The Tragedy Of Queen Mary
In a country already unstable, the news of Queen Mary s actions during her reign shook the rickety
balance between chaos and peace. Thirty years after King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic
Church, installed a new religion into English culture, and citizens lived in a country where
Catholicism was outlawed, the Marian Era began. The Marian Era lasted from 1553 1558, and will
forever be remembered as a dark and dangerous time. If one was asked who they knew from the
English monarchy during the 16th Century, many will answer Bloody Mary . Everyone knows about
the dreaded Queen Bloody Mary, but hardly anyone really knows why. Sparking the question: Why
was Queen Mary one of the most hated queens in English history? The lasting hate from Queen Mary
s reign was due in part by her attempts to revive Catholicism in a Protestant England, killing a mass of
English citizens, and her overall failures as a queen.
Much to the protest of many of England s Protestant citizens, one of Mary s main goals as queen was
to restore Catholicism as England s primary, and only, religion. Even though Kings Henry VIII and
Edward both outlawed Catholicism in England, Mary still practiced in secret. Thirty years prior, when
King Henry VIII renounced the Catholic Church, he created his own; therefore creating a brand new
religion: Protestantism. As a result, Catholicism was made illegal and considered heretics if found
attending Mass or accepting Communion (Royal Household 1). Mary s first

What Are The Reasons For The Age Of Exploration
The Age of Exploration and Conquests of the New World began in the 15th century by Columbus. He
was a Spanish explorer who went on the journey to seek for the Indies, but eventually ended up in the
Caribbean islands. The three causes for the Age of Exploration were the Glory, Gold, and God.
One of the major causes for the Age of Exploration was the search for glory by the European
explorers. All of the explorations began with the interest to earn glory by setting goals for finding
certain discoveries. According to a map from 1955, in 1513, Ponco de Leon discovered accidentally
Florida while he was in search of the fountain of youth , and he later earned the glory about this
exploration (doc 1). Furthermore, Magellan set out to circumnavigate ... Show more content on

Explorers went out to discover new lands as they were promised a lot of gold. Nicolas Le Challeux
wrote about Florida s possessions: This country is also rich in gold and in all sorts of animals, both

were his obstacle into discovering El Dorado the city of gold. The golden reserves of a certain country
were the reason for the voyage and its conquest, therefore, gold is also responsible for the settlement
of the Europeans on the American continents. The material promises made to conquerors as they
discovered new places is what developed the trade system and set up the bases of massive
colonization waves. Gold didn t just serve as a motivation for exploration, but also as a price.
According to a statistic from the 1995, Spain exported around 7 million of ounces of gold and silver to
the New World in 1598 (doc 3). Moreover, Cortes s desire to conquer the Aztecs was also moved by
the fact that they had a lot of gold as many of their buildings were fully built out of it, and he took all
of it when he conquered Montezuma II. .The Spanish gradually increased their golden reserves, but

Gender Roles In Thread Hell
Introduction Ito Jigoku, which also known as Thread Hell, was the most well known theatre plays
from Kishida Rio. Through this play, Kishida invited the audience to explore and think about the
meaning of home , nation and the gender role problems existed in the reality of Japan. The story
happens in the time during the Fifteen Year War, 1939, with a silk mill called Thread and Yarn Store
existing as the main stage. A girl called Mayu is searching for a home and a mother. Following the
male recruiters, she arrived at the Thread and Yarn Store, the place where she eventually found and

Maternal role is heavily stressed in the play, so as the effects of patriarchy on the lives of women.
Mayu was aimed to find her mother, and the place called home . In one of her lines, she mentioned, At
the place called home, there is Mother (Kishida, 1984). From this line, we can see that Mayu relates
home to mother, they are two inseparable concepts. This setting is in line with the real expectation
from the Japanese society that women should be a good wives, wise mothers since 1898 (Anderson,
2009). The prime minister at that period, Tojo Hideki, also said the similar idea that the best duty for
women is to stay at home and manage the family nicely so that men can work on the front lines for the
country (Havens, 1975). Japanese society depicts mothers figure is the centre of a household and they

Persepolis Gender Analysis
In American Born Chinese and in Persepolis, both protagonists hate their nationality and wish they
were normal. Being a minority can be difficult at times. Sometimes, minorities are looked down upon
and just wish that they could be normal like the rest of the people they are surrounded by. In
Persepolis, Satrapi was asked what race she was and lied in response to gain others respect and to be
seen as an equal. In the graphic novel, the panel used at this time shows tense emotions by the action
lines seen and the facial expressions. When she lies, the entire background is black and she looks sad.
Satrapi does not maintain eye contact when she lied because she was embarrassed and knew she made
a mistake. With the gutters between the scenes, we can assume how she is feeling after lying.
Occasionally, ignorant people will assume that you are just like your race. In Satrapi s case, people
would see her as a terrorist. Satrapi lied so that the boy she liked would view her as a normal person,
not just some terrorist. In American Born Chinese, Jin Wang also denied his nationality to be seen as
normal by society. When Wang was introduced to class, a boy made a joke saying, Don t you people
eat dogs? . Racism due to being a minority can affect how much one wants to express their culture. If
people are intolerant of others, they have a tendency to hide their culture. Wang was also classmates
with a another Asian girl, which he never talked to because his classmates would make racist jokes
about arranged marriages. When another Asian boy was introduced to the class, Wang wanted to hit
him because he fit the stereotypes of the Asian culture. He was depicted wearing glasses, dressing in
horrendous clothing, having an accent, and having squinty eyes. Wang did not want to associate with
the new kid. When the new kid spoke the Chinese language, Wang was mad. His eyebrows were
squinted and he told him You re in America. Speak English. In general, both the protagonist from the
stories hid their nationalism so that they would not be picked on. They both need to accept their
nationalism in order to mature. In both graphic novels, both protagonists, Wang and Satrapi, want to
fit in with white America. Satrapi spends a good

Importance Of Self Love And Body Positivity
Self love and body positivity, are the two subjects I have struggled with since last year. Self love is
when you have a positive view of yourself and are confident in yourself. And body positivity is
forgiving and affirming towards your body. There was a time when I used to not care what I looked
like. I wouldn t care if I had a noticeable blemish my face, had rolls of flesh showing, or ate an entire
batch of cookies by myself. But somehow, one day everything changed.
For the longest time I wasn t proud of how I looked. The fact that I have glasses and have loads of
acne around my face, wasn t helping. I remember looking at the girls at school and wondering how
they have smooth skin, and why they are so beautiful. You have no idea how countless times I typed
How to clear acne in the google search bar. And even spent time daydreaming how I would be treated
differently if I obtain contacts and be beautiful. My friends would say I was lovely appealing gorgeous
etc. I never believed I was any of those words. Thinking of changing my appearance so I can be
accepted by others was something I sadly thought was true. I feel embarrassed that I even had that
mindset. Now. I feel positive about my appearance. I realized having acne is part of being a teen, and I
have now accepted that wearing glasses add character and it s different.
On the top of that, I was never satisfied with my body image. I would stand in front of the mirror and
judge every aspect of my body, specifically my stomach. I want to be skinny, I want ABS, I want my
collar bones to be noticeable. I would weigh myself all the time. I hate to admit it, but I have a fear of
being overweight like the people in My 600 Pound Life. In addition seeing models like Gigi Hadid
and Kendall Jenner, I couldn t help but feel envious of how perfect their bodies are. And hearing girls
at school say they weigh 122 or 107 pounds, while I m over here weighing more than that. Also, I
would feel self conscious when changing into my PE clothes in the girls locker room. That I would
head into the bathroom stall to dress up in there considering I didn t want my classmates to examine
my body. I still struggle to form my body the best it can be.

  • 2. The Dred Scott Case On The New Territories Of The West Essay At the beginning of the 1860s, the national Democratic party split in half. It had split into the Northern Democrats and the Southern Democrats. They split because of the issue of slavery, which was very alive at the time. As well, the Dred Scott case played an important role in the split of the party. The Northern Democrats didn t want slavery to expand into the new territory. On the other end, Southern Democrats called for the preservation of slavery within their states and the expansion into the new territories of the west. Their contentious battles at the national convention in both Charleston and Baltimore prove that they were a party divided. Because of this, it would eventually lead to the election of Abraham Lincoln and the secession of the southern states. The Northern Democrats believed that slavery needed to be halted to the states they were already in. If it moved into new territory, it would throw off the balance of free and slave states. They also called for popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty calls for a democratic government by the people and for the people. Stephen Douglas ran for the Northern Democrats and upheld their position on the matter of slavery expansion and popular sovereignty. As well, he upheld the prevention of disunion. The Northern Democrats were angered that the Southern Democrats were calling for the expansion of slavery to the new territories and that is what ultimately split them from the Southern Democrats. • 3. The Proteins Of Carbohydrates And Carbohydrates Introduction Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are organic molecules found in every living organism. These macromolecules are large carbon based structures. The macromolecules are assembled by joining several smaller units, called monomers, together through a chemical reaction called dehydration synthesis. The resulting polymer can be disassembled through the complementary process called hydrolysis.Carbohydrates are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a 1:2:1 ratio. This means that for every carbon atom present in the carbohydrate there are two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom present. The monomers for carbohydrates are referred to as monosaccharides. When many monosaccharides are chained together the resulting molecule is called a polysaccharide. Carbohydrates are used by living organisms as an important source of energy. Examples of carbohydrates include glucose, fructose, sucrose, galactose, ribose, deoxyribose, cellulose and chitin.Lipids are also made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen but the ratio of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen is not 1:2:1. Instead, lipids have a much higher number of carbons and hydrogens with few oxygen atoms present. The nonpolar bonds that form between the carbon and hydrogen atoms of a lipid cause them to be hydrophobic, or water repellent, molecules. This explains why water and oil do not mix. The large number of carbon to hydrogen bonds also serves to make lipids energy rich storage molecules. One gram of lipid stores ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hinduism In Life Of Pi Out of the three religions that Pi practiced, he was more adapted more into Hinduism owing to the fact that he was born into to it, and one can see he sincerely and openly believed the Hinduism creed more than any of the others he studied, which is one of the main reasons he survived his ordeal. In Martel s book Life of Pi, the main character Piscine Molitor studied three different religions, one of those being Hinduism; the world s third largest religion following Christianity and Islam ( Hinduism ). The Hinduism faith emerged around the year 1500 BC, and it flourished all around the world, but mainly in the country where Pi was located India ( Hinduism ). Hindus believe that all creatures are sacred, and should be protected; which explains why most Hindus are vegetarians, including Piscine ( Hinduism ). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pi was born into the Hinduism, becoming involved in its rites and rituals as an infant ( Life of Pi ). One of the rituals of being a Hindu is believing that all animals are sacred. For Pi, being stranded out on the Pacific Ocean, this was a problem for him. Pi had no other source of food except for the few packages on the lifeboat, which were quickly running out. Pi hesitates to kill one of flying fish that land on his lifeboat, but the lifelong pacifist and vegetarian breaks the fish s neck ( Life of Pi ). It was hard for Pi to hurt the fish and then he remembered a story from the Hindu religion of Markandeya and falling out of Vishnu s mouth into the universe. This inspired him to see how small and meaningless his suffering actually was. (Martel). So his faith in Hinduism was a double sided sword in which he found more light than darkness ... • 5. Hummingbird Research Paper The hummingbird is one of the most unique animals on our planet. They are equipped with freaky flying abilities and fantastically fast traits, all which make them the distinct animals that they are. How everyday can be a struggle for these nectar consuming flyers just puts me in awe. Hummingbirds have multiple special characteristics that help them to survive in the wilderness. Hummingbirds have a heart rate of 1,200 bpm when flying, and take about 250 breaths per minute. Hummingbirds can beat their wings up to 200 times per second, which, as you may have guessed, takes up a lot of energy. This helps them to move forwards, backwards, hover, and even move upside down. Hummingbirds spend most of their days gathering nectar to use as energy. These frequent flyers are also quite small and light. The smallest hummingbird, the Bee Hummingbird, is only 5 cm in length while the largest hummingbird, the Giant Hummingbird, is 20 cm in length. Most hummingbirds weigh less than a nickel. This helps them move around quickly and efficiently, and also helps them to gather nectar from small flowers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For starters, hummingbirds are surprisingly intelligent for their minuscule size. Hummingbirds have the largest percentage of brain size to body size of all the species of birds at 4.2%. They can also remember which flowers they have visited and how long it takes a flower to refill. It takes hummingbirds lots of energy to fly, and they even use lots of energy while perching. This is why hummingbirds enter a hibernation like state called torpor which slows down their heart rate down to 1/15 of what it is normally. Hummingbirds can also see near ultraviolet light, which is why colors like red stand out so much to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Judy Bacas Murals Essay An Inspiration Across Cultures Public art conquers so much more than the simple task of making the street a little easier to look at. It involves those who created it, those who supplied the means to create it, and those whose lives it continues to impact. Wall paintings in particular take an important role in working for a greater good. Judith F. Baca, a Hispanic American woman and artist activist has contributed an unaccountable amount to the mural movement in Los Angeles. She has accomplished this by giving individuals the chance to create art and develop a sense of pride, she has taught younger generations a respect for their ethnic identity, and from the many walks of life that continue to view her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The simple fact that Baca is a woman is extremely important when it comes to evaluating her impact on others. Being a woman and reaching out for social change the way that Judy Baca does takes much dedication and passion. Bell hooks writes about the commodification of women in the art world: ...an undiscerning marketplace seeks to confine, limit, and even destroy our artistic freedom and practice. (Hooks 1981, 17). While Baca comes from the historically challenged feminine perspective, she can reach the youth that she works with because of their disadvantaged perspective as well. They are more apt to listen and learn from her because she has already overcome the challenge of succeeding in as a Hispanic American woman in a patriarchal society. Baca s commitment led her to found the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) along with film maker Donna Dietch and artist Christina Schlesinger in Venice, California. SPARC has facilitated in the creation, preservation and documentation of public art in the Los Angeles area. In this way SPARC has been able to get the community involved in art and has given a voice to peoples of color. In addition, the center has organized symposia and exhibitions that draw attention to the multitude of cultures that make up the area as well as the entire country (Brown 1996, 28). • 7. The Cultural Impact Of Technology The world today is very different from the world our grandparents lived in. There are a lot of advancements in technology that make things obviously different, but there are also many changes in our culture and society that has been affected by technological changes that many people fail to realize. One film that showcases the cultural impact of technology is the movie Hackers, directed by Lain Softley. The film is centered around the latest technology available (in 1995 when the film was released) and the growing culture centered around the elite hacker community. The premise of the film is that a group of hackers are being framed for a virus that was launched to capsize ships if a demand for five million dollars was not met. The group of hackers work together to prove that they are innocent by hacking into the database of a major corporation. In that database is the virus that was created by the company s head of cyber security that was supposed to steal a total of twenty five million dollars. The ships that were to be destroyed were all linked through satellite connections. Each ship is automatically guided and managed by a central computer. While it is commonplace for companies today to use satellite guidance systems and remote access to onboard computers, the movie does nudge the story along by making the whole system extremely vulnerable. Such things like three character passwords and single centralized command centers are obvious flaws with the system used in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Ethical Arguments Against Torture Discussions concerning torture have always been controversial and upsetting. For the benefit of many, torture seems excusable and permissible when it is guaranteed to yield vital and necessary information. Even from an act utilitarian standpoint, torture is acceptable when its actions produce the highest happiness in numbers. But from a rule utilitarian perspective, torture violates universal truths and is not effective everywhere at all times, since it is not always guaranteed to produce the same result. This essay will argue against torture on the basis that it is unethical no matter what the situation is or who the suspect may be. The Oxford English Dictionary provides two main entries to define the word torture and, for the sake of the unusual circumstances presented in the time bomb case, the second entry will be used as a springboard for the rule utilitarian argument against torturing a suspect and/or his child. According to the OED s second entry, the definition of torture is To inflict severe pain or suffering upon; to torment; to distress or afflict grievously; also, to exercise the mind severely. By examining this definition, emphasis should be placed on two main parts: 1. To inflict severe pain or suffering upon and 2. To exercise the mind severely. We will work from these parts to break down the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The act of torture itself has the effect of a double edged sword on the suspect and the torturer. To exercise the mind severely is not just a definition limited to the suspect but encompasses all participants of the torture as well. The first stress category is internal or individual stress. Stress can happen at any time especially on the internal side as there is always a chance of an officer worrying about the competency to handle an assignment. If the assignment they are working on is causing individual stress the feelings of helplessness and vulnerability starts to happen when they feel the pressure of trying to finish an assignment. Officers start to feel the internal stress that everyone is counting on them to get the assignment they are working on in perfect working order. Since crime never sleeps the assignments that make officers internally stress over each assignment critical which can lead to more time being spent on duty rather than off duty. The dearth of time for personal development can translate into divorce, suicide, alcoholism, or burnout . The stress of the job and having a family takes its toll but those who can cope with the internal stress of their job and family are the one that can have both at the same time. To the contrary, Lady Macbeth was overcome by her ambition from the very beginning. Reasoning was abandoned after the decision to kill Duncan was made. His ambition does not become overbearing until it is fueled by Lady Macbeth s own ambition. Macbeth s ambition is in sharp contrast to Banquo. Banquo comes across as much more hesitant to accept the witches prophesy. This contrast was created for a specific reason to highlight Macbeth s tragic flaw. One critical perspective views Banquo s function as essentially symbolic: he is portrayed as a man who, like Macbeth, has the capacity for both God s grace and sin; but unlike the protagonist, he puts little stock in the Weird Sisters, prophecies and does not succumb to their temptations. Banquo s reluctance to dwell on the witchs predictions therefore underscores, by contrast, the nature of Macbeth s descent into evil. (Scott; 238) Banquo does not have the same overbearing ambition as Macbeth and therefor is able to reason with the situation. Banquo s logic is most prevalently seen in the following quote: That trusted home Might yet enkindle you unto the Crown Besides the Thane of Cawdor, But tis Strange: And oftentimes, to win us to our Harm. • 17. Systematic Economic Change And Poverty Reduction James Stewart Matias Bianchi LAS/POL 364 11/2/2015 Systematic Economic Change and Poverty Reduction: The Effects of Governance on Inequality Liberalization is a term that has dominated the minds, and governments of Latin America from the advent of the region encompassing debt crisis of the 1980s. Many reforms, with the idea of opening up the market and reducing barriers to trade in order to increase growth, control inflation, and reduce social unrest, have taken hold in the region in notable countries such as Mexico. In, Programs on Poverty and Inequality: Chile, Mexico, and Peru, John Sheahan explores the reasons as to why liberalization programs have seemingly worked in some countries, and have had lackluster effects in others. Chile, for example, is often cited as the shining beacon of economic example in Latin America, and is also grouped in with the East Asian economies that developed to the level of Western Europe from the 1980s onwards. Conversely, Mexico has had disappointing growth that has never recovered to pre 1980s levels, along with social unrest and failures in governance. This paper will explore the questions: Why does poverty persist so much in some countries in the region e.g. Mexico, and Peru to a lesser extent, and why does it seem effectively controlled in other parts, such as in Chile? Sheahan argues that direct social programs are increasing in popularity as effective forms of controlling the negative effects of liberalization reforms, but that they ... Branagh s portrayal of the queen is also greater than the other two. Gertrude has a lot more power in his version and is able to stand her ground against Hamlet; she is also the only one not to have a sexual encounter with Hamlet. This makes Branagh s act three greater because it is more realistic that the queen would be angry with Hamlet and stand up to him rather than being submissive to him like the other two depictions. In this version Hamlet is much more emotional. In the other two Hamlet rarely shows his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Marian Era lasted from 1553 1558, and will forever be remembered as a dark and dangerous time. • 36. Persepolis Gender Analysis In American Born Chinese and in Persepolis, both protagonists hate their nationality and wish they were normal. Being a minority can be difficult at times. Sometimes, minorities are looked down upon and just wish that they could be normal like the rest of the people they are surrounded by. In Persepolis, Satrapi was asked what race she was and lied in response to gain others respect and to be seen as an equal. In the graphic novel, the panel used at this time shows tense emotions by the action lines seen and the facial expressions. When she lies, the entire background is black and she looks sad. Satrapi does not maintain eye contact when she lied because she was embarrassed and knew she made a mistake. With the gutters between the scenes, we can assume how she is feeling after lying. Occasionally, ignorant people will assume that you are just like your race. In Satrapi s case, people would see her as a terrorist. Satrapi lied so that the boy she liked would view her as a normal person, not just some terrorist. In American Born Chinese, Jin Wang also denied his nationality to be seen as normal by society. When Wang was introduced to class, a boy made a joke saying, Don t you people eat dogs? . Racism due to being a minority can affect how much one wants to express their culture. If people are intolerant of others, they have a tendency to hide their culture. Wang was also classmates with a another Asian girl, which he never talked to because his classmates would make racist jokes about arranged marriages. When another Asian boy was introduced to the class, Wang wanted to hit him because he fit the stereotypes of the Asian culture. He was depicted wearing glasses, dressing in horrendous clothing, having an accent, and having squinty eyes. Wang did not want to associate with the new kid. When the new kid spoke the Chinese language, Wang was mad. His eyebrows were squinted and he told him You re in America. Speak English. In general, both the protagonist from the stories hid their nationalism so that they would not be picked on. They both need to accept their nationalism in order to mature. • 37. Importance Of Self Love And Body Positivity Self love and body positivity, are the two subjects I have struggled with since last year. Self love is when you have a positive view of yourself and are confident in yourself. And body positivity is forgiving and affirming towards your body. There was a time when I used to not care what I looked like. I wouldn t care if I had a noticeable blemish my face, had rolls of flesh showing, or ate an entire batch of cookies by myself. But somehow, one day everything changed. For the longest time I wasn t proud of how I looked. The fact that I have glasses and have loads of acne around my face, wasn t helping. I remember looking at the girls at school and wondering how they have smooth skin, and why they are so beautiful. You have no idea how countless times I typed How to clear acne in the google search bar. And even spent time daydreaming how I would be treated differently if I obtain contacts and be beautiful. My friends would say I was lovely appealing gorgeous etc. I never believed I was any of those words. Thinking of changing my appearance so I can be accepted by others was something I sadly thought was true. I feel embarrassed that I even had that mindset. Now. I feel positive about my appearance. I realized having acne is part of being a teen, and I have now accepted that wearing glasses add character and it s different. On the top of that, I was never satisfied with my body image. I would stand in front of the mirror and judge every aspect of my body, specifically my stomach. I want to be skinny, I want ABS, I want my collar bones to be noticeable. I would weigh myself all the time. I hate to admit it, but I have a fear of being overweight like the people in My 600 Pound Life. In addition seeing models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, I couldn t help but feel envious of how perfect their bodies are. And hearing girls at school say they weigh 122 or 107 pounds, while I m over here weighing more than that. Also, I would feel self conscious when changing into my PE clothes in the girls locker room. That I would head into the bathroom stall to dress up in there considering I didn t want my classmates to examine my body. I still struggle to form my body the best it can be. Food was the main ...
